Muriel Jean Waschow Prow
Muriel Jean Waschow Prow, 66 of Carpentersville died Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. She was born in Elgin on July 10, 1937, the daughter of Leonard and Malinda (nee Borchardt) Waschow.
Survivors include her daughter, Cheryl (Mark Hillyer) Prow-Hillyer of Carpentersville; her son, James Prow of Elgin; her grandsons, Jim, Josh and Justin Prow; her sister, Betty Waschow of Elgin; her brother, Leonard (Bobbie) Waschow of Elgin; two nieces and two nephews; her brother-in-law, Gene Wells of Carpentersville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Prow; one sister, Shirley Wells.
Family and friends will meet for graveside services on Thursday, August 7, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Dundee Twp. East cemetery, East Dundee. The Rev. Eun Hye Choi will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of West Dundee. The Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee is in charge of arrangements.
Albert P. Elvin
Albert P. Elvin, 87, of Elgin passed away Sunday, July 11, 2004 at Rosewood Care Center. He was born June 18, 1917 in Elgin, the son of Charles and Anna Lorang Elvin. A life long resident of Elgin, he was employed by the Elgin National Watch Co. for 14 years and the Elgin Post Office for 29 years. He started his career with the Post Office as a substitute carrier in January 1949 and held various positions including Foreman of Delivery and Collection, Superintendent of Delivery and Collection, Manager of Mail Processing and Manager of Customer Services. He received a Special Achievement Award for outstanding service in the delivery operation of the post office before retiring July 15, 1977. He was an avid sports fan and enthusiastic bowler and golfer. A life long traveler, he visited all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and traveled overseas. In 1977, he began traveling to California each winter and for ten years, was a volunteer for the National Park Service in Death Valley, California, a place that held a special fascination for him. He was beloved by his extended family and will be dearly missed.
He was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Plato Center and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #799 of Elgin.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Broeker Elvin; two daughters, Patricia Ann Elvin of Elgin and Linda Elvin (Douglas Kelley) of San Jose, California; two grandchildren, Brett and Kyla Kelley; and a sister, Iris Garrelts of Elgin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Robert in infancy and LeRoy Elvin.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 4 PM in the Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin with Pastors Paul Meyers and Calvin Culpepper officiating. Visitation is at the funeral home beginning at 3 PM the same day. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 41W170 Russell Rd., Plato Center, IL, 60170.
Jesse Mason Fry
Jesse Mason Fry, age 85, passed away Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, IL. Jesse died peacefully after a lengthy decline from heart failure.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Yvette E. Fry (Geary) in February, 2004.
He is survived by four children: Garry (Kathryn); Sylvia Reinsalu (Aarne); Jay (Mary Beth) and Deborah Lehr (Bruce); one daughter-in-law, Sandra Fry; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Jesse was born January 31, 1919, at Polo, IL, to parents Frederick and Anna (Stein) Fry. He graduated from Polo High Schoolin 1937. On June 4, 1938, he married
his wife, Yvette, daughter of Clinton and Emma (Roderick) Geary, at Oregon, IL. Jesse and Yvette celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2003. Jesse was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the "Lucky Seventh" Armored Division. He fought in the 1944-45 European Theater of Operation's campaigns of: Battle of the Bulge (Defense of St. Vith, Belg.), Rhineland, Ruhr Pocket, Central Germany and the North Germany Plain to the Baltic Sea. In 1947, Jesse earned his FAA Private Pilot's license under the G.I. Bill. Following the war, he was employed as a Commercial Teamster and he moved his family to the Elgin area in 1953. Jesse retired after many years with Liberty Trucking Inc. of Elgin and Chicago, as a Liberty Teamster for Illinois Tool Works. Jesse and his wife were members/officers of the Elgin Moose Lodge for over 40 years, as well as members of the Elgin Eagles Club, and the Elgin VFW.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, August 7, 2004, at Laird Funeral Home, 310 South State Street, Elgin, IL. There will be visitation at 12:00 p.m. and a memorial service following at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be private at a later date.
Arnold W. Kalsow
Arnold W. Kalsow, 94 of Algonquin, formerly of East Dundee and Wisconsin, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. He was born in East Dundee on July 17, 1910, the son of Herman and Martha (nee Bruhn) Kalsow. Mr. Kalsow was a 1929 graduate of Dundee Community High School. He was the former owner and operator of the Cardunal Cleaners with locations in both East and West Dundee. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of West Dundee and a former many year member of the Immanuel Men's Club. He was a former volunteer fireman in East and West Dundee for over 25 years. Mr. Kalsow was the first person in Kane County to be certified to teach CPR. He and his wife were active supporters and volunteers at the Bethesda Lutheran Home in Watertown, Wisconsin.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Erna F. (nee Kurth) Beth Kalsow. They married
on November 3, 1968; his three daughters, Judy (Harold) Hansen of Wild Rose, Wisconsin, Ruthann (Larry) Fettes of East Dundee and Carolyn (Richard) Krause of Pittsford, New York; six step children, Janice (Glenn) Plauck, David (Sharon) Beth and Dennis (Judy) Beth all of West Dundee, Orval (Mary) Beth of Plato Center, Roger (Carol) Beth of Marengo and Brian Beth of Watertown, WI; nine grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and six step great grandchildren. Many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marie Wolff; a son in infancy; and two sisters, Dorothea Duvel and Lydia Kollman.
Funeral Services will be on Monday at 11 AM in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, West Dundee. Mr. Frank Hewitt, Director of Parish Ministries will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 to 6 PM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee and on Monday in church from 10 AM until time of service. Please omit flowers, memorials may be made to either the Bethesda Lutheran or the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, West Dundee.
Fern E. Nielsen
Fern E. Nielsen, 81, of Elgin passed away Tuesday, August 3, 2004 in her home. She was born November 11, 1922 in OK the daughter of William and Alta Murley Frey. She had been a resident of Elgin for most her life. She had been employed by the Elgin National Watch Co. in Elgin.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Elgin.
Surviving are her two daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Nielsen of Elgin and Mary (Jeff) Fulin of Elgin; one son, Carl Nielsen of Elgin; two grandchildren, Kyle and Brenna Fulin; one sister, Bonnie Jeffries of Carmen, OK.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ellsworth Nielsen; two brothers, Virgil and Billie Frey.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 7, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Elgin with Rev. Mike Frantz officiating. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services in the church. Memorials may be given to the family for the care of Carl Nielsen.
Marguerite M. True
Marguerite M. True, 90, of Tuscon, Arizona, formerly of Elgin, IL, passed away July 27, 2004 in Kindred Hospital in Tuscon with loved ones present. She was born December 2, 1913 in Waterloo, Wisconsin, the daughter of Hugo and Helen (Haberman) Zibell. In addition to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Marguerite was a Girl Scout Leader, masterful seamstress and worked at Joseph Spiess Department Store for many years. She was always know for her flair for fashion and her dedication to her family. Marguerite's other loves were the Green Bay Packers and St. Edward High School. Marguerite was married
to the late Greg True for 55 years.
She is survived by three daughters, Marie True of Tuscon, Arizona, twins, Kathy (Patrick) Hannell of Huntley, IL and Kay (Jerry) Carbonari of Tuscon, Arizona; a son, Terry (Jean) True of Winfield, IL; nine grandchildren, Kim (Tim) Hopkins, Shawn (Diana) True, Kris (Brett) Hawk, Mike (Mollie) Hannell, Jim (Liz) True, Doug Carbonari, Eric True, Matt Hannell and Laura Carbonari; and four great grandchildren, Grace True, twins, Andrew and Katherine Hopkins and Mara Hawk.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Greg; twin sister, Marion; and two brothers, Earl and Harold.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, August 8, 2004 at 3 PM in the Laird Funeral Home, 301 S. State St., Elgin. Visitation will be in the Laird Funeral Home on Sunday, August 8, 2004 from 1 PM until time of services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marguerite M. True Scholarship Fund for the guardian angel program at St. Edward High School, 335 Locust St., Elgin, IL, 60123. St. Edward High School is the school where the True family has been associated with for the past 60 years.
Herbert J. Beacon
Herbert J. Beacon, 94 of Elgin passed away Monday, August 4, 2003 at Sherman West Court, Elgin. He was born January 9, 1909 in Elgin, the son of John "Jack" and Fannie Hartopp Beacon. He had been a resident of Elgin all his life and was a graduate of Elgin High School in 1927. He was employed by Illinois Bell Telephone Co., Howell Co., Elgin National Watch Co. and then Western Electric, Montgomery, IL before retiring.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Elgin where he had served as an usher and on the building and property committee. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club of America.
Surviving are his daughter, Mary Kay (John "Jack") Ferguson of Casper, Wyoming; a son, John E. (Jean) Beacon of Brewer, Maine; two grandchildren, Michael (Dawn) Beacon and Derek Beacon; one great-grandson, Anthony Beacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edna in 1986; two sisters, Doris Beacon and Eva DePew.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 9 at 11:00 a.m. in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin with Rev. Olin Sletto officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Laird Funeral Home, Elgin is in charge of arrangements.
Lucy Bartelle "Judy" Betz
Lucy Bartelle "Judy" Betz, 84, of Elgin, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2003 in Alexian Brothers Hospice House in Elk Grove Village, IL. She was born in Marissa, IL on May 13, 1919 and had resided in Elgin for over 70 years. Before her retirement in 1985, she was a hairdresser at Joseph Spiess Company, Mr. Russell's Beauty Shop and in her home beauty shop.
She was a member of Highland Avenue Fellowship Church of Elgin where she enjoyed the fellowship of many friends. She was a recent resident of Oak Crest Residence in Elgin and The Arlington in Long Grove. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother and grandmother. She will be sadly missed.
Survivors include her husband, George, whom she married

Dolores Henderson
Dolores Henderson, 82, of Willow Lake Estates, Elgin died Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at the Provena-St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. She was born in Chicago on February 10, 1921, the daughter of John B. and Anna (Filonowicz) Swiderski. Mrs. Henderson was a 26 year resident of Willow Lake Estates. She was active in many clubs at Willow Lakes including the Social Club and Ceramics. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, West Dundee, a member of Elgin Moose #799 and Elgin American Legion #57. Mrs. Henderson was also a Kane County Election Judge.
She is survived by her sons: James Henderson of Crystal Lake and Jack (Susan) Henderson of Algonquin, two grandchildren: Amy L. (Dave) Gabrys of Crystal Lake and Kevin Henderson of East St. Louis, IL, one great grandson: Bradley Gabrys. One sister: Vi (Steve) Gronowski of Delray Beach, FL. Former daughter-in-law and good friend: Ellen Henderson of Crystal Lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Winfield Henderson on September 12, 1976, one brother: Bruno Filon and one sister: Lillian Gregorzek.
Funeral services will be on Friday at 2 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Burial will be private. Visitation will be on Friday from 11 a.m. until time of service. Memorials may be made to the Provena-St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin.
Vernon F. "Butch" Lang
Vernon F. "Butch" Lang, 57 of Elgin died Sunday, August 3 near Mendota as the result of an auto accident. He was born August 2, 1946 in Elgin to Vernon F. and Lois (Holtz) Lang, Sr.
Vernon was employed by the city of Elgin for over 30 years. He was an avid fisherman, boater, and loved his cabin.
He is survived by his wife, Judith A. (Gromer) Lang; a son, Vernon D. (Rebecca) Lang of Hampshire; a daughter, Shelly (Bill) Sadowski of Elgin; a brother, Charles (Cindy) Lang of Elgin; sisters, Nancy (Jerry) Morgan, Janet (Raymond) Akers and Mary Gifford all of Elgin; grandchildren, Adam J., Sean W., and William A. Sadowski, and Samantha R. Lang; his mother, Lois (Lang) Roberson; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Terry Lee.
Funeral services will take place on Thursday, August 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Wait Ross Allanson Elgin Chapel with Rev. Pamela F. Pendexter of First Congregatoinal Church of Dundee officiating. Burial will be private. The family will greet friends after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday until the services at 7:30. Please omit flowers with memorials in his name to the charity of your choice.
Mary Ann Meyer
Mary Ann Meyer, 72 of Island Lake died Monday, August 4, 2003 at Lexington Health Care Center in Lake Zurich. She had been a resident of Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home for 20 years.
She is survived by her brothers, Robert Meyer of Island Lake and Martin Meyer of South Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Sonny Meyer of West Dundee.
A private service will be held Friday afternoon in Palatine. Burial will be a St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery, Mt. Prospect, IL.
Roger A. Seiling, Sr.
Roger A. Seiling, Sr., 60 of Elgin passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2003 in his home very peacefully. He was born November 12, 1942 in Woodstock and was the son of Henry and Edna (Klopenstein) Seiling. He graduated from Dundee High School in 1961. He served in the Army from November 1964 to 1966 and was in Vietnam. He was a member of Teamsters Local No. 330 for 32 years before retiring from Preston Trucking in 1997. He was employed part time at Minuteman in Hampshire at the time of his death.
He was united in marriage to Donna Allison on September 16, 1995 in the house in which they have lived for the past eight years.
Surviving are his wife, Donna; two sons, Roger (Jennifer) Seiling of Fall Creek, Wisconsin, Robert Seiling of Elgin; two daughters, Alisa Patterson (William) Orozco of Stillman Valley, IL, Rachel Seiling of Las Vegas, Nevada; three step-daughters, Cindy Allison of Reno, Nevada, Michele (Max) Metz of Burlington, IL, Christine Williams (Jesus) Golly of Island Lake, IL; two grandsons, Zachary Patterson and Justin Seiling; a granddaughter, MacKenzie Orozco; step-grandchildren, Brandon Metz, Max Metz, Jr., Jennifer Williams, Alexandra Williams and Chrissy Koukol, whom he thought of as a daughter; four brothers, John of Wisconsin, James and Charles of Elgin, Donald of England; one sister, Barbara (George) Kidera of Hampshire, IL; his in-laws, Dom and Jane Ranallo of Hanover Park, IL; several nephews and many friends and relatives and his ever faithful dog, Sara.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert, in infancy; an infant daughter, Amy Michelle on April 10, 1972.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, 310 South State St., Elgin with Chaplain Richard Gilbert officiating. Burial will be in Algonquin cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the American Cancer Society so that maybe someday people will not have to die of this dreadful disease.
