Julia Gifford Graves
Julia Gifford Graves, 99, of The Holmstad in Batavia, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001 in Michealsen Health Care Center, Batavia.
She was born July 11, 1902 in Hanover Township, the daughter of Charles A. and Eva M. (Gillbert) Gifford.
She was united in marriage to Howard K. Graves on Aug. 17, 1926 in Hanover Township.
Julia was a graduate of Elgin Academy, Elgin Junior College and a 1925 graduate of DePauw University of Greencastle, Ind.
For many years, she was employed in the office of E.J. Brach & Sons candy company in Chicago, until her retirement in 1968. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elgin. In recent years she was active in the church circles. She was a member of the church Service Guild; the Modern Cornelias Social Group; current literature group of American Association of University of Women, Daughters of American Revolution; Elgin Area Historical Society and Society of Mayflower Descendents.
Survivors include her son, Howard (Irene) Graves Jr. of Medina, Ohio; a daughter, Nancy (Gordon) Wickstrom of Cherokee Village, Ark.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Rubye Roberts of Scottsdale, Ariz. and by two sisters-in-law, Florence KenyonGifford of South Elgin and Barbara Graves Sharp of Brandon, Minn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard K. Graves; two sisters, Olive Pelletier and Marguerite Smith; four brothers, Frank A., Walter C., James T. and Arleigh D.Gifford.
Memorial Services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001 in The Holmstad's Ahlstrand Chapel, Batavia, the Rev. Larry Dieckman officiating. Private interment will be in the Bluff City cemetery, Elgin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund, c/o The Holmstad, 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia, IL. 60510.
Arrangements were handled by the Yurs-Peterson Funeral Home, Batavia.

Paul W. Kitterer
Paul W. Kitterer, 74, of Wonder Lake, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001 in Sherman Hospital, Elgin.
He was born Nov. 19, 1925 in Homewood, Ill., the son of Walter and Eunice (Riley) Kitterer.
He was a graduate of the Upper Iowa University receiving a degree in Business Administration. He worked as Chief Special Agent for the Illinois Central Railroad for many years and later was Vice President of the John T. Lynch Co., retiring in 1990.
Paul was a member of Post 5040 Veterans of Foreign Wars, last year as Junior Vice-Commander, Paul set new outstanding records as Chairman of both Poppy day sales and Voice of Democracy. This year as Senior Vice-Chairman his responsibility was that of Membership Chairman. He was also District Chairman of the drug abuse program. Most of his time was dontate to the Rifle Squad and Honor Guard. He was also a life member of the Marine Corp. League, the American Legion, a life member of the University of Michigan Alumni Club, and volunteered with the McHenry County Conservation District Wildlife Center for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Le-Anne Kitterer of Wonder Lake; four daughters, Paula K. (Eugene) Purkhiser of Homewood, Eunice Ann (John) Rech of Scottsdale, Ariz., Maggie Abbott of South Barrington and Jane (Michael) Kantor of Marengo; ten grandchildren, Kristine (Dr. Kirk) Kilburg, Douglas(Angela) Pittman, Lizabeth (Daniel) Dombeck, William and James Purkhiser,Alayna, Natalie and Steven Abbott, Will and Paige Kantor; and his beloved dogs, Skeeter, Reggie, Calvin, Toby, Fuller and Doofus.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 24, 2001 at the Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home in Woodstock. Interment will be in the McHenry County Memorial Park cemetery, Woodstock.
Visitation will be 5-9 p.m., Thursday in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Helping Paws, 257 King St., Crystal Lake; or to the VFW Rifle Squad, 240 N. Throop St. Woodstock.

Michael L. Miller
Michael L. Miller, age 47 of Elgin passed away Monday, August 20, 2001 in his home. He was born August 11, 1954 in Elgin, the son of Jarrett and Diane Hecht Miller. He had been a resident of Elgin all his life. He was a graduate of Larkin High School in 1972. He was employed by Dana Molded Products in Arlington Heights as Production Control Manager. He was a veteran serving in the Air Force. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Elgin.
Surviving are his wife, Valann Bazsali Miller whom he married August 13, 2000; a daughter, Tricia Miller of Elgin; mother, Diane Muller of Farmers Branch, TX; father Jarrett (Diane) Miller of Elgin; two sisters, Helene (Fred) Tinkler of Broken Arrow, OK, Sarah (Matthew) Parker of Chicago; four brothers Warren (Lorie) Miller of Phoenix, AZ, Abraham (Heidi) Miller of Oak, IL, Justin Miller of Elgin, Matthew (Sue) Walsh of Elgin, step daughter, Arian Turner of Chicago and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, Elgin with Rev. Steve Kottke officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church, Elgin.

Charles W. Schroeder
Charles W. Schroeder, 78, of Harrington Park, NJ, died Thursday, August 8, 2002.
Memorial service will be held September 21, 2002 at the Community Church in Harrington Park.

The Reverend Doctor Robert Howard Engen
The Reverend Doctor Robert Howard Engen passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2002 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin, Illinois. Before his retirement, he was Senior Pastor for twenty years (1971-91) at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Rockford, Illinois. Dr. Engen was Dean of the 23 Lutheran Churches in Rockford for eight years prior to his retirement. He was Pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Wheaton, Illinois for 10 1/2 years (1960-71). He was ordained by the Illinois Synod of United Lutheran Church in June of 1952. He served two Congregations before moving to Wheaton.
Pastor Engen was born October 2, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois. He did his undergraduate studies and received his B.A. at Carthage College and received his Master of Divinity and his Doctor of Ministry at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He also studied at the University of California and the Biblical Institute in Jerusalem. He had been Listed in "Who's Who in Religion" because of his national leadership in child welfare.
Pastor Engen had served as a consultant to the University of Illinois School of Social Work in Chicago, Illinois. He was the founder and President of the Northern Illinois Hospice Association.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, whom he married on August 25, 1951. Two children, Mark (Betty) of Aurora, IL and their children, Phillip, Brittany and Kimberly; son, Paul (Christy) of Elgin and their children, Luke, Brant, Kyle and Julia.
His loving sister, Mae Jean, and many nieces and nephews.
preceded in death by his parents, Anders and Karen (Larson) Engen.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 12:00 noon, August 24, 2002 in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 357 Division St., Elgin, IL 60120. Burial will be Private in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 23, 2002 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., (Rt. 31), Elgin, IL 60123. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Lutheran Theological Seminary of Chicago or The Shepard of the Prairie Lutheran Church, PO Box 359, Huntley, IL. 60142.

Mariane Fessler
Mariane Fessler, 90, of Winter Park passed away on August 19, 2002. Born to Alex and Elizabeth Binnie in Dundee, Ill. She moved to Winter Park in 1955.
She is survived by her loving husband Elmer and two children Darla Karlton and Larry Fessler, brother and sister-in-law; Alex and Florence Binnie.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. A funeral service will be conducted Friday, August 23, 2002, 10 a.m., at the CAREY HAND COX PARKER FUNERAL HOME, 1350 W. Fairbanks Ave., Winter Park, FL, 407-647-1942. Visitation will be on Thursday from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill cemetery.

Harold R. Flora
Harold R. Flora, formerly of Elgin, died Sunday, April 18, 2002 at St. Anthony Health Care in Lafayette, IN. He was born January 9, 1909 in Elgin, and had lived in Lafayette for the past 10 years, coming from Houston, TX where he had lived from 1977 to 1992.
Mr. Flora graduated from Elgin High School in 1929, and worked in the family business (Chas. Flora & Sons Plastering and Drywall) for most of his career prior to retirement. He served as a security guard at Joliet Arsenal during WWII. He married Dorothy Cahill in 1935.
Surviving are a son, Ron Flora (Susan Dorwaldt) of Lafayette, IN; three grandsons, Todd Flora (Gaea) of Austin, TX, Chad Flora of Houston, TX and Bret Flora (Lori) of Germantown, WI and a great granddaughter, Abigail Flora, of Germantown, WI. Other survivors include two sisters, Verna Merriau and Charlotte Ginnell, both of Elgin and a brother, Howard Flora, of Cedarburg, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Jennie Flora; two brothers, Roy and Don; his wife, Dorothy and a granddaughter, Michelle.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, August 23, 2002 in the Laird Funeral Home with the Rev. Monsignor Charles McNamee officiating. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, until the time of service.

Bev A. Fox (Holm)
Bev A. Fox (Holm), 45, of Dayton, OH, formerly of Elgin, IL passed away Friday, August 16, 2002 in her home.
She was born April 18, 1957 in Elgin and was the daughter of William and Janice (Torling) Holm.
Bev was a Registered Nurse, and had worked in Woodruff, WI, Wausau, WI and Dayton, OH. She volunteered with the Humane Society, and the Endangered Animals in the Cincinnati Zoo.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Gene Fox of Dayton, OH; two children, Briana and Brenna Sherer; her parents of Sun City, AZ; two step children, Jason (Jen) Fox and Liz Fox; and her brother, John (Mary) Holm of Bartlett, IL.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 12:30 PM in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM and on Thursday from 11:30 AM until the time of Services in the funeral home.

Claude M. Hamlin
Claude M. Hamlin, 87, of Elgin, passed away Monday, August 19 in Provena St. Joseph Hospital. He was born October 13, 1914 in Elgin and was the son of Newell and Agnes Hamlin. He was a graduate of Elgin High School and Carthage College. He had been in the insurance business in Elgin for many years and he was presently the owner of Hamlin Travel Agency in Elgin. He had served on the School Board of U46 for four years and was presently chairman of the Elgin Zoning Board. Mr. Hamlin was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church; Elgin Lodge No. 117 A.F. and A.M.; Medinah Temple of Chicago; member and past president of Elgin Shrine Club; member of St. Charles County Club; past president of the Life Under Writers Association; past chairman of Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children; member of B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge No. 737.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; two daughters, Sandra Gay (David) Schroeder of Reston, VA, Phyllis (Richard) White of Olive Branch, MS; four grandchildren, Michael Mehesan, Scott (Sonya) Schroeder, Michelle (Zachary) Hudson and Steven (Dawn) Schroeder; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Marion (Wayne) Paxton of Wells, MN. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn.
Funeral services will be held Friday, at 1:00 p.m. in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Olin Sletto officiating. Burial will be in McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock, IL. Visitation will be in the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin on Thursday, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and then at the church on Friday, from 12:00 noon until time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children or to the Evans Scholarship Fund % of St. Charles Country Club.

Delbert Hofer
"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last." Revelation 22:13. The Shepherd has called home another member of His flock.
Delbert Hofer, 68, of Peoria, Arizona and formerly of Elgin and Waukegan, Illinois, left this world for everlasting life on Monday, August 19, 2002.

Peter Werner Buttgereit
Peter Werner Buttgereit, formerly of Elgin, passed away peacefully August 3, 2003 in Mesa, Arizona.
Peter began a battle with cancer three years ago and fought it every step of the way with his courage and determination.
He is survived by his wife, Sharyn, who shared twelve wonderful years with him; his daughters, Cindy Gunther and Tammy Wyatt; his son, Joe; his three beautiful grandchildren, Peyton, Madison and Carson; and his mother, Lotte, who will forever miss him.
He is preceded in death by his father, Karl.
Peter will be missed by his family, including two sons-in-law, two sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Peter's life will be August 20, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at Northlake Funeral Home, 140 E. North Avenue, Northlake, IL.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 East Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.
