Pollyanna Steffen
Pollyanna Steffen, 75, of Sullivan, IL, formally a 50 years resident of Elgin, died early Sunday morning, August 19, 2001. Her son and daughter were at her bedside upon her passing.
She was born August 18, 1926 in Glen Ellyn, IL. Throughout her life she was a great homemaker and cook. "Polly" was also employed by Cooks Publishing, Fox Valley Typesetting, Gromer's Grocery and Eagle Foods.
Suvivors include her husband of 53 years, James Anton Steffen, a daughter, Mrs. Jean (Richard) Steffen Hamilton, and a son, Tony Steffen, all of Elgin; a sister, Mrs. Jane Stoffregen, of North Carolina; and a brother, Tom Shafer, of Marengo, IL.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Marylou Pasco; and her parents, Charles and Pauline Shafer.
Pollyanna Steffen was a sweet and generous lady. She was loved dearly and will forever be missed by her two children, Jeannie and Tony. Robert L. Tolley
Robert L. Tolley, 69, of Elgin passed away Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001 in Sherman Hospital, Elgin.
He was born July 6, 1932 in South Elgin, the son of Elbert and Nellie Mae McRoy Tolley.
He had been a resident of the Elgin area all of his life. He was a graduate of Elgin High School Class of 1951. He had been employed by Shakeproof Division of Illinois Tool Works for over 36 years before retiring in 1988. He also had been employed part time with the Elgin Police Dept. for over 30 years.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Elgin; a member and President of Fox Valley C.B. Sentinels; a member of Golden K. Kiwanis Club of Elgin; a member of License Plate Collectors of America; a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #799 of Elgin.
Survivors include his wife Frances Schmitendorf Tolley, whom he married on Sept. 17, 1955; a daughter, Susan (Daniel) Hartman of South Elgin; a grandson, Joseph D. Hartman; two sisters,Elberta Einwich of Elgin and Barbara (Foy) Winsett of South Elgin.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Frank Einwich.
Funeral Services will be 1 p.m., Thursday in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, the Rev. Steve Kottke officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin.
Memorials may be to the charity of your choice.

Father Dominic Cassidy
Father Dominic Cassidy died of natural causes in his home in Elgin, Illinois on August 16, 2002. Father Cassidy was born in Slatequarry, County Tyrone, Ireland to Ann Murphy Cassidy and John Cassidy on October 1, 1938.
He attended college at Ottawa University, Canada and Fordham University, New York City. He attended St. Paul Seminary, Ottawa, Canada and St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota. Father Cassidy arrived in the Diocese of Davenport in 1972 and was ordained a priest of the diocese by Bishop Gerald O'Keefe on July 27, 1974. Upon ordination, Father Cassidy served as Associate Pastor in St. Mary, Clinton until his appointment as Chaplain of Mercy Hospital, Davenport in 1976. In 1980, he served St. Joseph, West Liberty and was then appointed Associate Pastor for St. Mary, Riverside and St. Mary, Ottumwa before becoming Administrator of St. Mary, Eddyville. Most recently and for over 20 years, Fr. Dominic Cassidy served as a chaplain at Provena Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin, Illinois, in the Diocese of Rockford.
Father Dom is survived by family, Annie Anderson and her daughter Nuala of Massachusetts and Rev. Hugh Starkey and the Grogan family or Ireland.
The Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday, August 23, 2002, at 11:00 A.M. in the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services in the church. Visitation will then be held in Elgin on Monday, August 26, 2002, in the Laird Funeral Home from 4-8:00 P.M and a Memorial mass will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. in the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Elgin. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery, Elgin at 12:30 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Priests' Aid Society c/o The Diocese of Davenport or to Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin, IL.

Mariane Fessler
Mariane Fessler, 90, of Winter Park passed away on August 19, 2002. Born to Alex and Elizabeth Binnie in Dundee, Ill. She moved to Winter Park in 1955.
She is survived by her loving husband Elmer and two children Darla Karlton and Larry Fessler, brother and sister-in-law; Alex and Florence Binnie.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. A funeral service will be conducted Friday, August 23, 2002, 10 a.m., at the CAREY HAND COX PARKER FUNERAL HOME, 1350 W. Fairbanks Ave., Winter Park, FL, 407-647-1942. Visitation will be on Thursday from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill cemetery.

Harold R. Flora
Harold R. Flora, formerly of Elgin, died Sunday, April 18, 2002 at St. Anthony Health Care in Lafayette, IN. He was born January 9, 1909 in Elgin, and had lived in Lafayette for the past 10 years, coming from Houston, TX where he had lived from 1977 to 1992.
Mr. Flora graduated from Elgin High School in 1929, and worked in the family business (Chas. Flora & Sons Plastering and Drywall) for most of his career prior to retirement. He served as a security guard at Joliet Arsenal during WWII. He married Dorothy Cahill in 1935, and they were together for 53 years prior to her death in 1988.
Surviving are a son, Ron Flora (Susan Dorwaldt) of Lafayette, IN; three grandsons, Todd Flora (Gaea) of Austin, TX, Chad Flora of Houston, TX and Bret Flora (Lori) of Germantown, WI and a great granddaughter, Abigail Flora, of Germantown, WI. Other survivors include two sisters, Verna Merriau and Charlotte Ginnell, both of Elgin and a brother, Howard Flora, of Cedarburg, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Jennie Flora; two brothers, Roy and Don; his wife, Dorothy and a granddaughter, Michelle.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, August 23, 2002 in the Laird Funeral Home with the Rev. Monsignor Charles McNamee officiating. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, until the time of service.

Claude M. Hamlin
Claude M. Hamlin, 87, of Elgin, passed away Monday, August 19 in Provena St. Joseph Hospital. He was born October 13, 1914 in Elgin and was the son of Newell and Agnes Hamlin. He was a graduate of Elgin High School and Carthage College. He had been in the insurance business in Elgin for many years and he was presently the owner of Hamlin Travel Agency in Elgin. He had served on the School Board of U46 for four years and was presently chairman of the Elgin Zoning Board. Mr. Hamlin was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church; Elgin Lodge No. 117 A.F. and A.M.; Medinah Temple of Chicago; member and past president of Elgin Shrine Club; member of St. Charles County Club; past president of the Life Under Writers Association; past chairman of Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children; member of B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge No. 737.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; two daughters, Sandra Gay (David) Schroeder of Reston, VA, Phyllis (Richard) White of Olive Branch, MS; four grandchildren, Michael Mehesan, Scott (Sonya) Schroeder, Michelle (Zachary) Hudson and Steven (Dawn) Schroeder; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Marion (Wayne) Paxton of Wells, MN. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn.
Funeral services will be held Friday, at 1:00 p.m. in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Olin Sletto officiating. Burial will be in McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock, IL. Visitation will be in the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin on Thursday, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and then at the church on Friday, from 12:00 noon until time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children or to the Evans Scholarship Fund % of St. Charles Country Club.

Anne L. Husek
Anne L. Husek, 88, of Elgin, formerly of Jupiter, Florida died Monday, August 19, 2002. She was born November 10, 1913 and was the daughter of Lawrence and Bessie Mahaleck.
Survived by one daughter, Judith (Donald) Bergman of Elgin; five grandchildren, Gene Achterberg, Eric (Donna) Achterberg, Jeffrey (Sarah) Achterberg, Keven Husek and Heather Husek; nine great-grandchildren.
Preceded by her parents; one son, Lawrence Husek and one sister, Mildred Javurek.
Private services were held in the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin with private burial. There was no visitation.

Thelma J. Rhines
93 year old resident of Elgin, formerly of Marseilles, passed away Wednesday, August 21 in Elgin.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home in Marseilles. Visitation will be from 4 PM to 8 PM Friday at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home.

Donald L. Roush
Donald L. Roush, 68, of South Elgin, formerly of Chicago and Plato Township, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2003 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.
He was born January 11, 1935 in Elgin, the son of Leonard and Dorothea (Helmuth) Roush.
He was a 1952 graduate of Central High School and received his teaching degree from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest. After several years with Bethany Lutheran School in Parma Heights, Ohio, where he taught elementary grades and conducted the adult choir, Don returned to the area to pursue his Master's Degree in counseling from Northern Illinois University. He received his call to teach at Luther High School North in Chicago where he stayed five years. In 1972, Don returned to Concordia Teachers College to help with development. After leaving Concordia, Don began fund-raising and promotion of lutheran education in high schools and elementary schools in the Chicago area, culminating in the formation of C.L.E.F. (Chicago Lutheran Education Foundation). His life was dedicated to furthering the educational opportunities of all children.
Mr. Roush was a well-known musician playing piano for the Chet Roush Orchestra, which played at the former Blue Moon Ballroom in Elgin and for many wedding receptions and community gatherings in the Northern Illinois Area. He was an avid Cubs fan having attended spring training and many games.
Surviving are his wife, Velma (nee Huck), whom he married May 27, 1973 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Elgin; sister-in-law, Betty Roush of Plato Township; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Elma (Emory) Mowers; and brothers, Chet Roush and Everett (Mary) Roush.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Monday, August 25, at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43W301 Plank Rd, North Plato. Burial will be in the North Plato cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 PM Sunday at the Lutheran Home and Service for the Aged, 800 W. Oakton Ave, Arlington Heights, and also Monday prior to services at the church from 9 to 11 AM.
Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to C.L.E.F., Good News Fund, 234 N. Plum Grove Rd, Palatine, IL, 60067 or to charity of choice.

Barbara Banker Turner
Barbara Banker Turner, daughter of Irving Dysart and Marguerite Adams Banker, died on August 12, 2003 at the home of her daughter in Lafayette, IN. Born September 2, 1918, in Franklin Grove, IL, she graduated from Elgin High School in 1936 and from Evanston Hospital School of Nursing, affiliated with Northwestern University, in 1940. She received pediatrics training at Boston Children's Hospital and did post graduate work in surgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital. During World War II, she established a surgery unit at Community Hospital in Geneva, IL, managing the operating room and training nurses.
She married Carroll Dwight on September 5, 1942, in Neosho, MO. He is a retired company representative for DeLaval Separator Company and lives in Lafayette, IN with their eldest daughter, Jane Ann Turner.
During the time she lived in Elgin, Barbara was active in Eastern Star, Girl Scouts, PTA at all her children's schools, and the First Congregational Church.
Surviving with her husband are her three children, Jane Ann Turner of Lafayette, IN, Judith Turner (Walter) Mebane of Fairfield, CT, Don Allen Turner of Norwood, MA; her grandchildren, Catherine Alcott mebane and Walter Allen Mebane IV of Fairfield, CT.
She will be intered on September 6, 2003 at Franklin Grove, IL.

Mike C. Koehnke
Mike C. Koehnke, 45, of Elgin passed away Thursday, August 19, 2004. He was born February 15, 1959 in Elgin, the son of Gordon and Mary Drake Koehnke. He had been a resident of Elgin all of his life and had attended Larking High School. He was a former employee of USPG in Elgin.
Surviving are his wife, Cheryl Clayton Koehnke of Ohio; three children, Adam of Texas, Jeremiah (Kristin) of Wisconsin and Nathan of Wisconsin; six grandchildren; three step sons, Dan (Dawn) Greenwood of Wisconsin, Dennis Tazelaar of Elgin and Russell (Amber) Tazelaar of Elgin; his mother, Mary Koehnke of Elgin; a sister, Sharon (Thomas) Graf of Kentucky; three brothers, Steve (Denise) Koehnke of South Elgin, David Koehnke and Jeff (Joannie) Koehnke both of Elgin; his favorite uncle, Ronald (Barbara) Drake of Elgin; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; and his beloved dog, Gizmo.
Memorial visitation will be held Monday, August 23, 2004 from 5 to 8 PM at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
