He was born May 28, 1925 in Dundee, the son of Herman and Eva Goldenstein Radtke. He was a graduate of Dundee High School in 1943. He had been a resident of the Dundee, rural St. Charles and the Elgin area all of his life. He had farmed in rural St. Charles for many years before retiring. He was a charter member of Grace Evangelical Church of Elgin. He was a former member of the Kane County Farm Bureau.
Surviving are three children, John Radtke, Jr. of Elgin, Paul (Alysa) Radtke of Sycamore and Dawn (Joe) Spina of Naperville; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Gabriella Spina; four sisters, Louise Gabler of Elgin, Eva (Wilber) Smith of Peoria, AZ, Anna Huxtable of Huntley and Nancy (James) Danielek of Elgin; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lois (Spencer) Radtke; his second wife, Gay Anne (Snyder) Radtke; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Gabler and Leroy Huxtable; and a foster son, Thomas Kenny.
Mr. Radtke spent his entire life as a farmer, first in Dundee and then for 43 years in rural Elgin/St. Charles. He retired in 1994 and moved from the farm to Elgin in 1997 where he resided the rest of his life. For most of his farming life he was a dairy farmer who loved Holsteins and supplemented the low dairy farmer's income by hauling milk for many local dairy farmers. He began dairy farming with his father and continued it after his father was killed in a cornfield accident in 1953. During his farming years, he was an award winning seed corn salesman and acquired many friends during this time. He also developed a love for fishing after his first wife died and he took his family on many trips to Canada to catch Walleye and enjoy quality time away from the pressures of farming. After his dairy barn burned in 1975, he converted his operation to grain farming, which he turned over to his son Paul upon his retirement. In his retirement years, he maintained his interest in farming while also spending his time reading his beloved Voice of the Hawkeyes newspaper and agonizing daily over the misfortunes of the Cubs and the Bears. Over the past several summers, he enjoyed spending his time on area softball fields watching his son, John Jr's, Northern Illinois Lightning fastpitch team play a game that he also loved during the old Elgin Church League days. He also developed a love for NASCAR racing and became a big Jeff Gordon fan. One of his happiest moments was when his sons Paul and John Jr. took him to the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet for qualifying and Gordon won the pole for the big race. The look on his face when that happened will long be a cherished memory for both Paul and John Jr. He was exceptionally proud of his children and their accomplishments and spent several years supporting his daughter Dawn in her successful quest to earn a nursing degree from the University of Iowa. He also maintained a loving relationship with his three foster sons and countless others who accepted him for the hard-working, family-providing man he was. His farm was always an open door.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 PM TODAY at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin, 60123. 847-741-8800.
