Richard Paul Harris
Richard Paul Harris, 67, of Elgin passed away Saturday, August 21, 2004 in Sherman West Court, Elgin. He was born in Elgin on April 16, 1937, the son of Fredrick W. and Florence C. (Peterson) Harris. Richard was a 1955 graduate of Elgin High School. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Elgin for many years. He was employed by Nicor Gas Company for 35 years before retiring as a n inspector. Richard loved to spend time with his grandchildren and working in his yard, giving special care to his flowers.
Survivors include his former wife, Richelle Smithberg Harris of Elgin; daughter, Tracy Lynn Harris of Elgin; son, Curtis Paul Harris and fiancee Sally Martin of Hampshire; daughter, Melissa Susan (Jason) Watrous of South Elgin; daughter, Suzanne Gail Dettmann of Elgin; eight grandchildren, Tara Harris, Cory Woodward, Ashley Oltman, Jordan Dettmann, Heather Harris, Mason Dettmann, Dylan Watrous and Kylee Dettmann.
preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alfred, Robert, Floyd Harris and Charles Harris in infancy; and a sister, Elizabeth Harris.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Thursday, August 26, 2004 in the Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services, Elgin Chapel, 51 Center St. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 from 5 PM until 8 PM in the funeral home. Memorials may be made in his name to the Jayne Shover Easter Seals.
Richard S. Kemerling
Richard S. Kemerling, 74, of Elgin passed away Sunday, August 22, 2004 in Sherman Hospital, Elgin. He was born on April 1, 1930 in Elgin, the son of Edwin and Clara (Torgeson) Kemerling. Richard was a resident of Elgin for all of his life, and had worked at Precision Diamond Tool of Elgin for many years prior to his retirement. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. Richard was an excellent wood carver, carving every duck species in North America. He was a member of Christ the Lord Lutheran Church of Elgin, the Chippewa Archery Club, the Bowmen of the Fox Archery Club and the Upland Hunting Club.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Kemerling of Elgin; step son, Richard (Sherri) Baumann of White Bear Lake, MN; his brother-in-law, James Weirich of Huntley, IL; his sister-in-law, Barbara Kemerling of Elgin; his cousin, Wayne (Sharon) Torgeson of Hancock, MI; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents,; his first wife, Anna Marie Kemerling in 1989; two brothers, Tom Kemerling and Robert Kemerling in infancy; and a sister, Carol Weirich.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 AM in Christ the Lord Lutheran Church, Elgin with Rev. Steve Srock officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Visitation will be on Wednesday in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin from 4 to 8 PM and on Thursday in the church from 10 AM until time of services. Memorials may be made to the Christ the Lord Lutheran Church.
Ruth S. Starrett
Ruth S. Starrett, 96, of Wayne passed away Monday, July 26, 2004 at Provena Mercy Hospital. She was born August 26, 1907 in Chicago, the daughter of the late John George and Louisa Steininger. She was united in marriage to Louis Luster Starrett on August 23, 1929 in Chicago.
Mrs. Starrett was a graduate of the University of Chicago and remained an avid reader throughout her life. She was a member of the Little Home Church of Wayne, the Wayne Area Bible Study, the Wayne Art League, and the Dunham Woods Hunt Club. She was a past president of the Women's Club of Lombard, the Lombard School Board and the Flower Club. The Starretts traveled extensively and spend winters painting at the Instituto in San Miguel, Mexico.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Luster Starrett, her parents, brother Walter, sister Lillian Eltinge, niece Louise Martin and nephew Lamont Eltinge.
She is survived by twin sons Peter J. Starrett, M.D. (Susan) of North Aurora and Ward Clark Starrett, M.D. (Diane) of Wayne, grandchildren Alexander Starrett (Sarah) of Milwaukee, Harrison Starrett (Monica) of Simsbury, Ct., Ward Starrett, Jr. of Chicago, Diane Starrett Taranowski (William) of Libertyville and Susie Starrett of Dallas, TX. She enjoyed her seven great-grandchildren Lexi, Lain, Tally, Cole, Meridith Starrett and Clarie and Laurie Taranowski. She is also survived by grand-niece Margaret Martin and grand-nephews Dale and Don Martin.

Ruth Scharmann Bauman
Ruth Scharmann Bauman, age 73, of Elgin passed away Thursday, August 23, 2001 in Sherman Hospital, Elgin. She was born October 30, 1927 in Winona, Minnesota the daughter of Adolph and Lois LeRoy Scharmann. She was a graduate of West High School, Minneapolis, Minnesota. She received her Bachelors of Arts Degree from Northern Illinois University and her Masters in School Social Work from Loyola University, Chicago. She has been employed by School District U-46 as a Social Worker at McKinley, Larsen and Elgin High School in Elgin for 20 years before retiring. She was named Illinois School Social Worker of the year in 1990.
She was a charter member of Christ the Lord Lutheran Church of Elgin where she was active in the Choir and Bell choir and numerous other church activities. She started a Parents Anonymous Chapter in Elgin. She was secretary of both the Elgin Symphony League and the Elgin Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving are her husband, George W. Bauman, whom she married
on June 26, 1948; a son, G. Marc (Karen) Baumann of Northbrook; granddaughters, Laura, Katharine, Grace and Christine; two sisters, Betty (Roger) Rodengen of Bloomington, MN and Martha (Allen) Latham of Spicer, MN; two nieces and nephews and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 A.M. in Christ the Lord Lutheran Church, Elgin with Rev. Steven Srock and Rev. Michael Stadtmueller officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and in the church Monday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Christ the Lord Lutheran Church, Elgin.
Barbara Ann Burrows
Barbara Ann (Meller) Burrows, 61, of Elgin, died at home on August 22, 2001, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Born November 24, 1939 in Chicago, to Ben and Tillie Meller, she married
Skip Burrows on May 23, 1970.
She moved with her family to Elgin in 1942, where she attended St. Mary's School and graduated from St. Edwards High School in 1957. She worked for ten years in real estate in the Elgin/Streamwood area and was proprietor of Meller's Corner Tavern on Rts. 19 & 59 in Elgin until its closing in 1992.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elgin. She also taught religious education with her daughter at St. Peter Damian Parish in Bartlett.
A fun-loving person with a generous heart and loved to laugh, her hobbies included traveling, gardening, Nascar racing, bird watching, and spending time with her family. She was also passionate about good food, music, nature, her love for animals, and her faith in our Lord.
Survivors include her husband, Skip, of 31 years, her three sons, Ben (Katy) Burch of Elgin, Daniel Burch of Elgin, and Edward (Cindy) Burch) of Streamwood; her daughter, Lisa (Colby) Basham of Bartlett, and stepdaughter, Lynnette (Sean) Berkebile of Las Vegas, NV; her nine grandchildren, Michael Burch,Lauren Burch, Betony Burch, Nicholas Basham, Lucas Basham, Mycaiah Berkebile, Julia Burch, Matthew Burch, andLynaiah Berkebile. She is also survived by her sister, Darlene (Roger) Lawler-Schlies of McHenry, her nephew, Mike (Kathryn) Lawler, nieces Cindy Lawler and Lucy (Dave) Voitik, her best friend, Patricia White of Jacksonville, FL, and many other friends and family members who will miss her dearly.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 27, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Division Street in Elgin.
Visitation will be from 4-9 P.M. on Sunday, August 26, 2001 at O'Conner & Homeier Funeral Home, 364 Division Street in Elgin.

Stanley A. Derdzinski
Stanley A. Derdzinski, age 79, of Elgin passed away Thursday, August 23, 2001 in the Rosewood Care Center, Elgin. He was born January 20, 1922 in Chicago the sons of Anthony and Mary Derdzinski. He had been a resident of Chicago most of his life and had been a resident of Elgin for the past five years. He was employed by Samuel Olson Conveyers in Franklin Park before retiring.
Surviving are his wife of over 50 years, Mary Orzechowski Derdzinski; a daughter, Patricia Mary (Ciril) Pfeifer of St. Charles; a son, Donald John Derdzinski of Chicago; two granddaughters, Melissa Katherin Pfeifer and Stacey Marie Pfeifer; one sister, Sophia Zielazny of Chicago; two nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Bernice Nadolski and two brothers, John and Walter Derdzinski.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 A.M. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin to St. Thomas More Catholic Church for Mass at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Geoffrey Wirth officiating. Burial will be in St. Adelbert cemetery, Niles. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home.
Terry R. Hefko
Terry R. Hefko, age 80, of Marshfield, Wisconsin, passed away at The House of the Dove Hospice Home in Marshfield, WI on Thursday, August 23, 2001.
He was born August 18, 1921 in Marshfield, WI. He was a 1939 graduate of Marshfield High School. He married
Elizabeth "Betty" A. Gustafson on June 19, 1946 in Ashland, WI.
Terry was president of Hefko Floral Company, Marshfield, until his retirement in 1988.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of Marshfield; five sons and two daughters, including a daughter Mary Smith and her husband, Tom of Elgin, IL and their children, Gabriel of Elgin, Bartholomew of Urbana and Riley of Elgin; also survived by 14 additional grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two sisters.
Funeral services at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 27, 2001 at The First Presbyterian Church, Marshfield, WI, Rev. Lois L. Swanson, officiating. Interment Hillside cemetery, Marshfield, where military rites will be held by the American Legion Post 54, Marshfield. Visitation at Rembs/Kundinger Funeral Home on Sunday from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. and on Monday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until time of services.
Linda J. Orfie McKevitt
Linda J. Orfie McKevitt, age 40, of Elgin passed away Friday, August 24 at her home with her loved ones by her side. She had fought a courageous six year battle with cancer. She was born July 16, 1961 in Elgin, the daughter of Frank and Patricia Nolan Orfie. She was a graduate of St. Edward High School and attended Northern Illinois University. She had been employed by First Card/Bank One for 20 years.
She was a long time member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church of Elgin.
Surviving are her husband, John McKevitt, whom she married
on July 30, 1988; a daughter, Kelly; a son, Matthew; her father of Elgin; a brother, Carl Orfie of Elgin; a sister, Lisa (Brian) Rowe of Elgin and a niece, Cecily Rowe of Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her mother in 1996.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 A.M. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin to St. Thomas More Catholic Church for Mass at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Andrew Hougan officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held Monday from 4:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. in the funeral home.

Vera A. Rasmussen
Vera A. Rasmussen, 87, of Elgin, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001 in her home.
She was born Nov. 8, 1913 in Chicago, the daughter of Carl M. and CarolineJorgensen Hansen.
She was married
May 12, 1934 in Chicago to Roy R. Rasmussen. She was an active member of the Elgin Moose Lodge #799 and enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include two sons, Roy(Barbara) Rasmussen of Hampshire and Ronald (Nola) Rasmussen of West Minister, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, JoAnne Rasmussen of South Elgin; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1974; a son, Warren in 1996; and two brothers, Carl and Wade Hansen.
Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001 in the O'Connor and Homeier Funeral Home, 364 Division St., Elgin, the Rev. Scott Chinburg officiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood cemetery, Elgin.
Visitation will be 4-9 p.m., Friday in the funeral home.

Leatha M. Romke
Leatha M. Romke, 81, of Burlington, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2001 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.
She was born July 3, 1920 in Elgin, the daughter of Edward and Gladiola (Cook) Behm. Leatha was a 1939 graduate of Elgin High School. She married
Erwin H. Romke on May 18, 1941 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Burlington.
Mrs. Romke was a member of St. John's Lutheran of Burlington, the Altar Guild, and the Ladies Aid.
Surviving are her daughter, Sharon (Phil) Loek of Burlington; six grandchildren, Erich (fiance Erika) Dean, Leanna Hurlbutt, Jason, Ian and Marissa Holcomb, and Kaitlin Loek, and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Romke was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Erwin in 1977; her daughter, Carole Dean in 1994 and two brothers, Murland "Bud" Behm, Don Behm, and an infant sister.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Monday, August 27, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 13N535 French Rd., Burlington with the Rev. Howard J. Gleason officiating. Following cremation, burial will be in the Burlington Union cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 P.M. Sunday at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire and at Church on Monday from 10 to 11 A.M.
