Ruth M. "Grandma" Friend
Ruth M. "Grandma" Friend, 89, of Algonquin died Thursday, August 21, 2003 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. She was born on December 11, 1913 in Chicago, IL the daughter of Rudolph and Minnie (nee Pippinburg) Mierke. Mrs. Friend was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church of East Dundee and a member of the Senior Bible Class. She was a long time volunteer at Immanuel Lutheran School and helped with the hot lunch program, and First Grade Reading Program.
She is survived by her children Arnold (Bev) Friend of Maryville, IL and Hollis J. "Holly" (Alan) Glowinski of Algonquin, four grandchildren: Joel (Julie) Friend of Chicago, Laura Friend of Troy, IL, Michael A. Glowinski of Pompano Beach, FL and James D. Glowinski of Irvine, CA, one great granddaughter: Reagan Hailee Duerra, one sister: Muriel Mierke of Bensenville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry C. Friend in 1982 and three brothers: Ernest, Paul and Frank.
Funeral Services will be on Saturday, August 30, 2003 at 10 a.m. in the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 310 E. Main St., East Dundee. The Rev. William P. Yonker will officiate. Burial will follow in the Chapel Hill Gardens West, Oakbrook Terrace. Visitation will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 310 E. Main St. in East Dundee on Friday from 4-9 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of service. Please omit flowers, memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Professional Church Workers Fund. The Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Galloway
Dorothy Galloway, 73, of DeKalb, formerly of Elgin, passed away Monday in the Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva, IL. She was born August 2, 1930 in Chicago, IL, and was the daughter of Emil and Loretta Gilson.
She is survived by seven children, Dianna (William) Kunkle of Houtzdale, PA, Kenneth (Elva) Zierk of Carpentersville, IL, Donna (Lewis) Corzine of St. Charles, IL, Lester Zierk of Batavia, IL, Helen Bittner of Batavia, IL, Bonnie Santana of Lantana, FL and Carol (Jon) Vallo of Hinckley, IL, 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, one sister, Esther (Buck) Plummer of West Dundee, IL.
preceded in death by her parents, her husband David Galloway in 2000 and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2003 at 1 p.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with Rev. Paul Hammar officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. and on Thursday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of one's choice.

Claudia J. Hines
Claudia J. Hines, 56, of Elgin passed away Thursday in her home. She was born January 20, 1947 in Elgin, the daughter of Claude and Ermalee Bledsoe. Claudia had worked at Joseph Spiess Co. and Safety Kleen in Elgin. Member of St. Laurence Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Donald "Toby" Hines of Elgin, one daughter, Megan Hines of Elgin, her father, Claude (Lillian) Bledsoe, her sister, Cindy (Ken) Bornstedt of Mississippi, her brother, Jim Bledsoe of South Elgin, two nieces, Brandi (Jon) Roche and Paige (Jeff) Haymons, one nephew, Joe Hines, one great niece, Taylor Roche, her care giver and special friend, Laima Butkute.
preceded in death by her mother Ermalee Bledsoe.
Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2003 at 10 a.m. in St. Laurence Catholic Church, Elgin with Rev. Joseph F. Kulak officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, and on Thursday in the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be made to the St. Laurence Building Fund.

Lewis Johnson, Jr.
Lewis Johnson, Jr., 62, of Cairo, IL, formerly of Elgin, passed away Saturday, August 23, 2003 in St. Francis Hospital, Cape Girardeau, MO.
Lewis was born to Lewis and Ida Mae Johnson on February 28, 1941 in Cairo, IL. Lewis was a 1959 graduate of Sumner High School in Cairo, IL. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1964. He moved to Elgin in 1965. He retired from Illinois Tools Work-Shakeproof Division in 1999 after working there for 34 years.
He is survived by his sons, Lewis Johnson III of Atlanta, GA and Donny Johnson of San Diego, CA; a daughter, Cotina Johnson of South Elgin; grandchildren Chrystian Johnson and Kenya Johnson of Gold Hill, OR; a brother, George (Thomasine) Johnson of Elgin; four sisters, Ella (Everett) Woods of Elgin, Ruthie Tye of Sandusky, OH, Geraldine Patton of Cairo, IL, Carolyn (Marvin) Edwards of Wayne, IL; many cousins, nieces and nephews and friends.
His parents and one brother, Glenn Johnson, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 29 at 10am at First Missionary Baptist Church in Cairo, IL. Burial will be in the National cemetery in Mound City, IL. Massie Funeral Home, 1001 Washington Ave., Cairo, IL (618) 734-1323 FAX: (618) 734-1346 is in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey Allen Kasko
Jeffrey Allen Kasko, 34 of Addison, formerly of Bartlett, passed away August 12, 2003. He was born May 14, 1969 to Bill and Shirley (nee Moeller) Kasko.
Jeffrey loved to fish and read. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1987 and attended Iowa State University, where he was a member of Beta Sigma Psi Fraternity.
He is survived by his parents; his grandmother, Jeannie Kasko; his aunts, Nancy (Lee) Bridgman of Venice, FL, Paulette Poppen of Tampa, FL; his ex-wife, Natalie Wilson; his nephew, Wesley (who was also his godson); his cousins, Annie Poppen, Adola (Jim) Neumann, Lee Jr. (Connie) Bridgman; his sister, Jennifer Kasko of Florida; and his godparents, John Whittmer and Sue Wells.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, August 31 at 3:00 p.m. at Living Lord Lutheran Church in Bartlett. Cremation was private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Living Lord Lutheran Church, 1044 Congress Dr., Bartlett, IL 60103 or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

June O. (Leveen) Klemann
June O. (Leveen) Klemann, of Webster, WI, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2003, at the age of 78.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Leveen and Bernard Klemann, Sr.; parents; and grandson, Todd Kiekhoefer.
June and Bernard owned and operated J.B. Tap in Webster, WI, retiring in 1983. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was always willing to lend a hand in time of need. Her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew her.
She will be deeply missed by her children, Scott Leveen, Fern (Hente) Braam, Kay (Don) Kiekhoefer, and Bernie Klemann, Jr.; grandchildren, Carrie, Patricia, Charles Leveen, Brittany and Josh (Leah) Campanelli, Jamie (Melanie) Kiekhoefer; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Nadia, Jonathon, and Tylor Kiekhoefer; sister, Fern (Ken) Sorensen; brother, Raymond (Dorothy) Lundsgaard; step-sister, Margaret Thurnell; many other relatives and friends.
Private family services will be held.

Dr. Myron E. Nowosad
Funeral services for Dr. Myron E. Nowosad, 79, of Elgin, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Ukrainian Catholic Church, 5000 N. Cumberland Ave. Norridge, Chicago, IL.
Dr. Nowosad, who was born Nov. 24, 1923 in Nesluchiw, Ukraine, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003 at Sherman Hospital, Elgin.
Dr. Nowosad emigrated to the United States in 1951. He graduated from University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana with a B.A. degree in German and Russian (1958), pursued graduate courses at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL (Summers 1960-1962), graduated Schiller College, Heidelberg, Germany with an M.A. in Comparative Literature (1971) and University of Munich, Munich, Germany with a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature (1975).
Dr. Nowosad taught German and Russian language courses at Elgin High School from 1958-1990, and at Elgin Community College from 1959-1968. He also lectured Summers 1976-1986 at the University of Munich and after retirement from EHS in 1990 continued to substitute teach in School District U46 through 2002.
From 1965 to 1970, Dr. Nowosad and his wife Ruth arranged German language-study programs and cultural excursions for an estimated 1,000 high school students from around Elgin and around the United States. From 1971-1995, the Nowosads arranged European tours for high school musicians, who performed at a number of events, including benefit concerts. An estimated 2,500 students from eight Illinois high schools, including EHS were involved in these programs which traveled to 10 European countries. From 1980-1995, the Nowosads arranged European cultural programs and excursions to include adults. The Nowosads also set up three high school exchange programs between EHS and Munich (1972); Buffalo Grove and Vienna (1989); and Wheeling and Donzdorf (1992) and were involved in efforts to help re-establish a high school (a.k.a 'gymnasium') in Lviv, Ukraine. The Nowosads' love of friends and community involved them in many local presentations related to foreign culture and travel, including annual displays of Ukrainian culture for the 'Touching on Traditions' multi-cultural winter holiday exhibit at Lords Park, Elgin. Dr. Nowosad was a resident of Elgin for 45 years.
Myron was the beloved son of Ivan and Irene (nee Romanyszyn) Nowosad; beloved husband of Ruth I. (nee Epple) Nowosad; loving brother of Ivan, Nesluchiw, Ukraine, and Dr. Eugene (Irene) Novosad, Feasterville, PA; loving uncle of Roxolana Donnelly, Wildwood, NJ, Eugene Novosad, Lake Zurich, IL, and Irene Novosad, Philadelphia, PA; and cherished great-uncle of Jennifer (Brad) Vogdes, Wildwood, NJ; and Christopher, Allison and Michelle Claupein, Philadelphia, PA. He also leaves many cherished cousins and friends in the United States, Ukraine, Germany, and Austria.
Myron was preceded in death by his brother, Ivan; his parents, Ivan and Irene; and his wife, Ruth.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 3-8 p.m. at the O'Connor and Homeier Funeral Home, 364 Division Street, Elgin; a memorial service will be held from 7-7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Ukrainian Catholic Church, 5000 North Cumberland Avenue, Norridge, Chicago, IL; pre-service visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Ukrainian Catholic Church or to "Friends of Academical Gymnasium" in Lviv, Ukraine c/o Eugene Novosad.

Malinda L. "Linda" Stadie
Malinda L. "Linda" Stadie, 89, of Hampshire, formerly of Elgin, passed away Monday, August 25, 2003 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
She was born April 22, 1914 in Schaumburg, IL, the daughter of August and Claire (Fasse) Lichthardt. Linda married Richard A. Stadie on December 27, 1951 in Elgin and they resided there for over 45 years before moving to Hampshire in 1997. They enjoyed bowling and playing cards.
Mrs. Stadie was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Burlington and formerly of St. John Lutheran Church of Elgin.
Surviving are her son Dwain (Laura) Stadie of Hampshire; three grandchildren Matthew, Nicole and Carly; sisters Betty Harz of Arlington Heights, Henrietta Werner of Elgin, Bertha Struck of Hampshire, and a brother Arnold (Luella) Lichthardt of rural Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard in 1998, brother August Lichthardt and sisters Erna Hunnerberg, Adella Lichthardt, and Florence Dickeau.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 29, at the St. John Lutheran Church, 13N535 French Rd., Burlington with Pastor Howard J. Gleason officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park in Elgin.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire and prior to services on Friday at the church from 10 to 11 a.m.
Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to the St. John Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 85, Burlington, IL 60109.

Margaret T. (Peg) Wiedemann
Margaret T. (Peg) Wiedemann, 87, a resident of Libertyville Manor in Libertyville, Illinois and formerly of Hyde Park in Chicago and a long-time resident of Elgin, Illinois, died August 25, 2003.
Peg Goggin Wiedemann was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The family moved to Wilmette and then settled in Elgin, Illinois as Peg started school. Peg graduated with honors in drama and poetry from Elgin High School and then completed cosmetology school while working at the Elgin Watch Factory to earn her tuition.
Peg owned her own beauty shop until her marriage in 1940 to Joseph J. Wiedemann, a prominent Elgin attorney. Peg assisted her husband in his law practice and enjoyed a superb reputation as a gourmet cook and hostess.
The middle child of eight children raised during the Depression, Peg early developed a flair for style and became an accomplished seamstress, making many of her own and her daughters' clothing. She also studied millinery and later taught hat making during the 1960s at the height of its fashion. Her earnings from millinery were donated to the Neuman Center established on the Northern Illinois University campus in DeKalb, Illinois. She subsequently received the Neuman Medal for her hard work and generosity.
Widowed in 1965, Peg worked at the YWCA in Elgin for two years and then at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business as an administrative assistant to several business professors for 20 years. She guided and supported her daughters in earning degrees in social work, cosmetology, business and law. Her retirement in 1987 brought many years of enjoyment with grandchildren, cooking, entertaining and avid reading.
Peg is survived by four daughters, Barbara (Howard) Ruppel, Carla Wiedemann, A. Deborah (Robert) Reed and Sara Jo (Ted) Larkin; five grandchildren, Joseph and Robert Reed and Elissa, Serena and Celeste Larkin; three sisters, Maura and Patricia Goggin and Ann G. Lutterbeck; one brother, Michael Goggin; many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Wiedemann; her brothers, William and Dennis Goggin; her sister, Phyllis Goggin Wiedemann.
The family will hold a service later this year. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Peg's name to the Illinois Chapter, Huntington's Disease Society of America at P.O. Box 8383, Rolling Meadows, Illinois 60008.

Frank Kollman
Frank Kollman, 90, of Elgin passed away Wednesday at his home. He was born August 22, 1914 in Chicago, son of Frank and Margaret Wiasith Kollman.
He served as a staff sergeant in Squadron L of the 104th Army Air Force Base Unit. He was stationed in the Northern Solomons as a radio operator mechanic 760 during World War II and received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with Bronze Star. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church Elgin and was an advisor for Explorers Post 2 and Cub Scouts Pack 2 and Boy Scouts Troop 2 at St. John's. He also enjoyed taking care of his gardens and camping. He worked for the City of Elgin Public Works Department. After retiring, he worked for the International HOD Carriers Building and Common Labor Union of American Local #582.
Survivors include one daughter, Carol (Lawrence) Alborn, one son, Louis Zimmermann, both of Elgin, seven grandchildren, Martha (Al) Weix, Jay (Susan) Alborn, Mike (Renee) Alborn, Scott Alborn, Mark Alborn, Dave (Jane) Alborn and Matthew Alborn, 12 great grandchildren, Nathan (Jennie) Weix, Eric Weix, Christopher and Nicholas Alborn, Michael Alborn, Elijah Alborn, Jacob Alborn, Carrie Alborn, Josie Alborn, Lexi Alborn, and Madison Alborn.
preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lydia in 2002, two brothers, Joseph, who died in World War II, and William.
Funeral services will be Monday, August 30 at 10 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Elgin with Rev. Herman Christiansen officiating. Burial will be at Lakewood Memorial Park in Elgin. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. at Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Elgin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Seasons Hospice.
