Patrick M. Kennedy Sr.
Patrick M. Kennedy Sr. was the "surprise" fourth child of Martin Kennedy (a mechanic) and Grace Koltes (a housewife) of Madison, Wisconsin. Patrick entered the world on June 3, 1935. Being the youngest of four (Marion, Joseph and William), he was referred to and doted on as the "baby". His parents were strong but loving Irish Catholics and Patrick did not receive any discipline he hadn't earned, like the time he watched his friends set fire to a pile of leaves under a parked car. Knowing he had not participated in this event he thought, mistakenly so, that his father would not punish him. The is the day when Patrick learned "guilty by association". His father passed away when Patrick was only Ten years old, a life-changing event that I don't think he ever got over. Patrick grew up and served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict where, in his words, his ability to type probably saved his life, as it allowed him to become the company clerk. Patrick had been trained by the military in the skill of combat, it did not stop his mother from hitting him "upside the head" with a broom when he returned from a late night of drinking with his buddies, while on leave from the military. Patrick's mom died in 1960. After completing his tour of duty, barber school brought Patrick to Chicago in the late 1950's, with boyhood friend Lester Mahaney. Patrick's carpool to and from school not only gave him transportation he needed but also allowed him to meet his wife of 41 years, Constance Bradley. The story goes that some strategic seating arrangements by my dad and some corners taken too quickly by the driver allowed the two to meet. The were married on August 31, 1960. Nice work dad! After a highly contested wedding, the bride being Baptist and the groom Catholic, the newlyweds set about creating a life together in Arlington Heights, Illinois where Patrick with friends Ron Christ and Mike Mikula bought the Arlington Market Barber Shop. A daughter, Kelly, blessed the couple on St. Patrick's Day, 1962 (canceling the annual St. Pat's poker game). After experiencing the joys of parenthood with their extremely docile and sleepy daughter, the couple added a son, Patrick, Jr. on May 25, 1963. My brother had all of the energy I did not. His activity level approached that of the Tasmanian Devil portrayed in Bugs Bunny Cartoons. It is joked now that had Ritalin been available in the early 1960's, Patrick Jr. would not only have been on the drug but would have been it's poster child. The Viet Nam War era brought with it long hair for men. This was not good news for the Barbering industry. Barbers became stylists and Patrick sought the security and health benefits (Thank God!) of the Kmart Corporation, where he worked for the next 25 years. It was during this time that our parents bought a home in Carpentersville, Illinois where they live to this day after 30 years. Patrick was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in the early 1980's. A disease he never fully respected. Patrick, much to the chagrin of family, continued to eat what he wanted and used Insulin to lower his blood sugar. The tell tale symptoms of Parkinson's Disease were first observed by my brother while on a trip to Las Vegas with dad during the early 1980's. During this trip my brother asked, "Dad, why don't your arms move any more when you walk?" This question changed our lives. Dad was diagnosed two years later after many, many visits to various types of doctors. Dad was forced to retire in 1987, when Parkinson's disease made it impossible for him to concentrate while driving to and from work.
Parkinson's Disease slowly took Patrick from a 6'3" 225 pound, working, book loving (he read the entire encyclopedia for fun), poker playing, Green Bay Packer/Chicago Cub loving, Irishman, to a 6'3" 120 pound bed bound, resident of the Crystal Pines Health Center in Crystal Lake, IL. He still loved the Packers and Cubs. The disease even took my dad's ability to read for any length of time due to concentration difficulties.
An unnamed son who died at birth, Patrick's dad, Martin, mom Grace and brothers, Joe and Bill, preceded him in death. Patrick reunited with them on a beautiful September 14, 2001.
Patrick leaves behind his beloved wife of 41 years, Connie (Bradley); daughter, Kelly Kennedy of Belvidere, IL; son, Patrick Kennedy Jr. of Carpentersville, IL; sister, Marion Kennedy of Mazomanie, WI; mother-in-law, Dorothy Storms of Elkhart, IN; sisters-in-law, Joan Kennedy of Madison, WI, Mary Kennedy of Mazomanie, WI and Jacque Keehn of Elkhart, IN; brothers-in-law, Tomas (Louise) Bradley of Harper's Ferry, WV, Lynn (Linda) Bradley of Elkhart, IN; and many nieces and nephews.
The family requests no flowers, contributions may be made to the American Parkinson's Association, 1250 Hylan Blvd, Suite 4B, Staten Island, NY, 10305-1946 or The American Diabetes Association at 1-800-DIABETES or Clark County Social Services, Senior Citizens' Protective Service, 3827 South Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas, NV, 89119. The wake and funeral will be private.
God bless you Patrick and God bless America.
