Harry Cal Ashbaugh
Harry Cal Ashbaugh, 76, of rural Gays Mills, Wis., passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 at the Vernon Memorial Hospital, Viroqua.
He was born Oct. 4, 1924 in Watson, Ill., the son of Harry W. and Lena (Oye) Ashbaugh.
He served during WWII in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Gays Mills McCormick Rose American Legion and the Algonquin VFW. He was a general contractor, stable owner, farmer, companion, father, grandfather that will be missed by everyone.
He is survived by his companion of over 29 years, Nelly Lee of Gays Mills; six children, Harry (Irene) Ashbaugh of Tulas, Okla., Constance Louise Ashbaugh of Elk Grove Village, Laurel Lynn Thuestad of Elgin, Cynthia Susan Ashbaugh of Tocoma, Wash., Andrienna Jane (Jim) Fizzell of Park Ridge, and Mary Christine (Scott) Whitsell of South Elgin; 11 grandchildren, Harry, Nicole, Natasha and Masha Ashbaugh, Alan and Amanda Ashbaugh, John Lucas, Betty and Patty Thuestad, Kate and Calvin Whitsell; four sisters, Helen Lucille Ashbaugh, Dorothy Mae Ashbaugh and Thelma Mortimer, all of Crystal Lake and Lois Hackman of Wauconda; other relatives, associates and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Alva, Robert and William; and two sisters, Nellie Clark and Irma Harvell.
Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m., Saturday at the Dummersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills, Wis. Burial with military graveside rites by the McCormick Rose American Legion will follow in the Evergreen cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Friday and on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services.
Delmar L. Deming
Delmar L. Deming, 85, of Elgin, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin.
He was born Feb. 5, 1916 in Pontiac, the son of Albert and Josephine (Levitt) Deming.
After graduating from Elgin High School in 1934, he attended mortuary college and worked as a funeral director in the Elgin area until 1948; at which time he entered the auto sales field and ultimately became the owner-operator of Deming Auto Sales. He was a member of the Musician's Local, a lifetime member of Illinois Funeral Directors Association. He was a member of a local jazz band.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet (Steve) Thomas of Loveland, Colo.; a sister, Dolores (Kenneth) Rapalee of Wilmette; two grandchildren, Chad (Monica) Thomas and Kelly Thomas, both of Loveland, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Hunter Lee Thomas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie H. Schultz Deming, whom he married
in 1940 and who preceded him in 2000.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m., Saturday will be Wait Ross Allanson Elgin Chapel, the Rev. Thomas O'Connor will officiating.
There will no visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
Victor W. Masi
Victor W. Masi, age 77, of Elgin, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2001 in Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. He was born November 4, 1923 in Elgin, the son of Antonio and Mary Cicerella Masi. He has been a resident of Elgin all his life. He was a graduate of Elgin High School in 1942. He was employed by the YMCA in Elgin, WRMN Radio Station and then was Assistant Director with the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Elgin for 17 years before retiring in 1984. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Marines.
He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church of Elgin; American Legion Post 57 of Elgin; VFW Post 1307 in Elgin. He was inducted into the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame of which he was instrumental in founding. For many years Vic and Farney announced area high school basketball games.
Survivors include his two sisters, Helen M. McCullouch of South Elgin and Annie (William) Wright of Mattoon, IL.; 11 nieces and nephews; 19 great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Russell Masi.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin to St. Thomas More Catholic Church for Mass at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Richard Russo officiating. Burial will be in River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee. Visitation will be held Friday, from 4-9 p.m. in the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the Parkinson's Foundation.
Georgian "Dolly" Rich
Georgian "Dolly" Rich, age 84, most recently of Urbana, Ohio, formerly of Elgin, died Thursday, February 8, 2001, in Urbana, Ohio. She was born August 16, 1916 in Elgin, to Rollie & Berenice (nee Therrien) Lawrence.
In 1934, Dolly graduated from the Elgin Academy. She was a 1938 graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana, IL. She was a life member of the Illini Alumna Club, Sherman Hospital Auxiliary, the Elgin YWCA, Kappa Delta Panhellic Sorority, the Navy Club (NCUSA) Auxiliary in Elgin. She was the past national commander of the Navy Club USA Auxiliary. Past Illinois Squadron commandant NCUSA Auxiliary, past commandant of Ship #7 NCUSA Elgin. Member of the Every Wednesday Literary club, former board member of the Larkin Center, former member of the Elgin Woman's Club, the Elgin Historical Society, Doceno Elgin Area Historical Society, a five year pin for tutor with the Elgin Literacy Connection, and past member of the Elgin Junior Service Board. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elgin.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, William, whom she married
on May 20, 1939; two sons, William "Larry" Lawrence Rich and Thomas Dyckman (Gloria) Rich, all of Urbana, Ohio; her daughter, Sally Rich of Loudon, Tennessee; a sister in law, Barbara Jane (George D.) Carter of Elgin; three grandchildren, William Busche, Jeffry (Heather) Busche, and Michael Busche; two great-grandchildren, Malerie Busche and Cameryn Busche; a brother-in-law, Ernie Ludwig of Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Edna "Sis" Ludwig.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Elgin, with the pastor of the church, Dr. Thomas Walker, officiating.
There will not be a visitation and the burial on Saturday will be private at Bluff City cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial tributes in Dolly's name be made to the Champaign Memorial Committee, P.O. Box 160, Urbana, Ohio 43078.

Mark J. Szczepanski
Mark J. Szczepanski, 35, of Lockport, formerly of Carpentersville died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 in the LaGrange Memorial Hospital, LaGrange, after a battle with cancer.
He was born in Elgin on April 5, 1965 and was a 1983 graduate of Irving Crown High School in Carpentersville.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge #1557 of Lockport.
Survivors include his parents, Robert J. and Geraldine L. (nee Broud) Szczepanski of Carpentersville; five brothers,Robert, Jr. (Robin) of Twin Lakes, Wis., Wayne (Lynda) of Lockport, Stan (Patti) of Crystal Lake, Jeff (Marcy) of Kingston and Mike (Maria) of Cincinnati, Ohio; two nephews, Jason and Brian; six nieces, Melissa, Amanda, Kristina, Elizabeth, Megan and Danielle; a great-niece, Katrina; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Burial will follow in the River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee.
Visitation will be 4-9 p.m., Thursday in the funeral home.

Marion Frost, 78, of Belvidere, formerly of Elgin, passed away on Friday, February, 15, 2002.

Bernice Kornman
Bernice Kornman, 91, of South Elgin, died February 13, 2002 in Sherman Hospital, Elgin. She was born November 10, 1910 to Clyde and Lillie Crowder.
Survivors include her daughters, Janet Page of Elgin and Karen Minson of Waukesha, WI; a son, Lawrence Kornman of Kenosha, WI; six grandchildren, Tracy Page, Christopher (Crystal) Page, Stacy Minson, Garrett, Ryan and Derrick Kornman; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Page, Jr. and Tyler Minson; also a sister, Lyndell Ralph of Fenton, MI.

Clarence A. "Petey" Peterson
Clarence A. "Petey" Peterson, 97, of Melbourne, Florida, formerly of Clearwater, Florida and the Dundee and Carpentersville areas, died Saturday, February 16, 2002 in Melbourne, Florida.
He was born in Carpentersville on September 28, 1904, the son of Herman and Zula (nee Henrickson) Peterson.
Mr. Peterson was raised in old Carpentersville and lived in the Dundee area until moving to Florida in 1946.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet "Hum" Hoxie Peterson of Florida; a daughter, Sandra (William) Keyes of Santa Clara, CA; a grandson; three granddaughters; and a great grandson; a brother, Ralph (Millie) Peterson of Carpentersville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Helen Maiers Peterson; a daughter, Judy Oden; and a sister, Frances Peterson.
Services will be held in Florida.
Lorraine Scott
Lorraine Scott, 74, of Burlington, passed away peacefully Friday, February 15, 2002 in her home.
She was born March 5, 1927 in Burlington Township, the daughter of Stanley and Anna (Pease) Stojan.
Lorraine was a lifelong resident of Burlington and a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she was baptized March 31, 1929 and confirmed on March 17, 1940. She was a graduate of Burlington High School and married
William T. Scott on October 23, 1949 in Burlington. Lorraine worked for several years as a cook at the Motts Lounge in Burlington, earning the nickname "Cookie". She then helped her husband in the operation of Bill's 66 Service Station in Burlington for over 16 years. Mrs. Scott was also a member of the Burlington Fire Department Auxiliary and the St. John's Ladies Aid.
Surviving are four daughters, Bonnie (John) Brettschneider of Burlington, Karla (Gary) Wilharm of Sycamore, Marla (Jon) Millen of Burlington, Peggy (Dan) Neisendorf of Sycamore; a son, Sparky (Lisa) Scott of Burlington; nine grandchildren, Jamie and Britany Brettschneider, Gary Wilharm Jr., Casey Millen, Alyson and Abby Neisendorf, Mackenzie, Tanner and Caden Scott; a sister, Ruby Beu of Elgin and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bill on December 29, 1991; a son-in-law, Larry White in 1972; five brothers, Stanley "Bud", Adelbert "Deke", Gordon "Sox", Warren "Jew" and Franklin "Buzz" Stojan; and sisters, Hazel "Lovey", Kelly and Florence in infancy.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, February 19 at the St. John's Lutheran Church, 13N535 French Rd, Burlington with the Rev. Howard J. Gleason officiating. Burial will be in the Burlington Township Union cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 PM Monday at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire and at the church on Tuesday prior to Services.
Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to the St. John's Lutheran Church.
Helen C. Skelly
Helen C. Skelly, 95, of Elgin passed away Thursday, February 14, 2002 at St. James Medical Center, Chicago Heights. She was born January 17, 1907 in Chicago, the daughter of Nels and Inga Stoffregen Fossedal. She was a graduate of Janesville High School, Wisconsin and Kahler College School of Nursing in Rochester, MN. She had been a resident of Elgin since 1945.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Elgin and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her two sons, Robert (Cynthia) Skelly of Park Forest, IL and Keith Skelly of San Francisco, CA; four grandchildren, Rachel, Emily, Erin and Ryan; also, three great-grandchildren, Kyle, Mason and Olivia.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert F. Skelly in 1994; a grandson, Brendan Skelly; four brothers, Walter, Robert, Elmer and Art Fossedal; also a sister, Mildred Miskelly.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:00 P.M. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with Rev. Steve Kottke officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church.
Henry J. Smart
Henry J. Smart of East Asheville, NC died Friday, February 15, 2002.
A native of Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, he was a 1959 graduate of University of Minnesota. He was Executive Director of Beverly Lake School for the Mentally Handicapped and Governmental Liaison-Ray Graham Association in Elgin, Illinois. He retired from Illinois Department of Mental Health in 1993 and moved to Asheville in 1996. He was Hanover, Ill. Township Trustee and member of various public and private social services Board of Directors in both Elgin and Asheville. President of the Haw Creek Lions Club of Asheville, active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Elgin and Asheville.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; a son, Gary; and a daughter, Victoria.
A Memorial Service will be at 11 AM Monday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Asheville with Rev. Joe Hoffman officiating.

James C. "Jim" Ervin
James C. "Jim" Ervin, 72, of East Dundee died Saturday, February 15, 2003 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born in Elgin on June 22, 1930, the son of Clinton and Esther (nee Bohl) Ervin.
He was a life long resident of the Dundee-Elgin areas. Jim was an avid golfer and worked as a golf pro. He worked as Golf Pro at Bonnie Dundee Golf Course, Randall Oaks Golf Course and Crystal Woods Golf Course. He was a Korean War Air Force Veteran. Jim was a long time and very active member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. He also served his church as an Elder.
He is survived by his wife of 49 1/2 years, Beatrice "Bea" (nee Schwartz) Ervin. They married
on September 12, 1953; two daughters, Denise (Bruce) Andersen of East Dundee and Janice (Thomas) West of Algonquin; two grandsons, Jeremiah and Zachary Green of East Dundee. Many friends also survive.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Richard and Curtiss.
Funeral Services will be on Tuesday at 11 AM in the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, East Dundee with the Rev. William P. Yonker, Senior Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 PM Monday in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee and on Tuesday in church from 10 AM until time of services.
The family has asked for the omission of flowers and memorials to the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church "Legacy Fund".
