David M. Jorth
David M. Jorth, 94, of Rockford, formerly of Elgin, passed away Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001 in Rockford.
He was born July 23, 1907 on the family farm in Okojobi Township, Iowa, the son of Antone and Inger Marie Dahl Jorth who immigrated from Denmark.
He moved to the Elgin area in 1926 and farmed for several years. He married
Adele Peterson on Sept. 5, 1931. He was employed by Boeing Aircraft during WWII. He later became a printer with Geographical Publishing, Pioneer Publishing, the Courier News and Brethren Publishing Co. and retired in 1972. In retirement he worked for Richardson Publishing until he turned 75. He had been a resident at the Peterson Meadows Retirement Community in Rockford since 1996.
He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Elgin. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing roses and using his natural ingenuity to fix and repair projects around the home. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and kept in touch with family members and friends.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda (James) Powers of Rockford; a son, Duane (Mary) Jorth of Orange, Calif.; grandchildren, William (Maggie) Jorth of Costa Mesa, Calif., Steven (Cindy) Jorth and Thomas (Nancy) Jorth, both of Chinco, Calif., Susan (William) Wishon of Seattle, Wash. and Elizabeth Powers of Somerville, Mass.; three great-grandsons, Clay, Clinton and David Jorth, all of Costa Mesa, Calif.; a cousin, Paula Jakobsen of Wyndmere, N.D.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he waspreceded in death by his wife, Adele Peterson Jorth; three sisters, Ida "Edna" Olmstead, Olga Pennington and Dagmar Thon; and five brothers, Conrad, Oscar, Noah, Aaron and Arthur Jorth.
Funeral Services will be 1:30 p.m., Thursday in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, the Rev. Paul Hayes officiating. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin.
Visitation will be 12:30 p.m., Thursday until the time of services in the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the family to be used for a memorial to be decided at a later date.
Phyllis J. Kurth
Phyllis J. Kurth, 72, of Elgin passed away Sunday, September 23, 2001 in the Rosewood Care Center, Elgin.
She was born December 10, 1928 in Elgin, the daughter of Edward and Ruth (Rahn) Schuring.
She had been a resident of Elgin all of her life. She was a graduate of Elgin High School in 1947, she loved to attend Elgin High School basketball games and is in the Coaches Hall of Fame. She was employed by Provena St. Joseph Hospital as a Registered Nurse for 41 years before retiring in 1992. She was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church. She was a 1946 Job's Daughter Honor Queen.
Surviving are two sons, William W. (Kimberly) Kurth Jr. of Elgin and Edward P. (Francisse) Kurth of Elgin; a grandson, Cody James Kurth; a step granddaughter, Samantha Serna; a brother-in-law, Donald Hahn of Elgin; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Stading of Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, William W. Kurth, Sr. in 1997.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 11 AM in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with Rev. Paul Meyers and Jackie Johnson, R.N. officiating. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 3 to 8 PM in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Cornerstone United Methodist Church or the Diabetes Foundation.
Robert J. Slominski, Sr.
Robert J. Slominski, Sr., 79, of West Dundee, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001 in Sherman Hospital, Elgin.
He was born in Chicago on April 17, 1922.
He was a resident of West Dundee for 33 years. He was a graduate of Northwestern University and earned his Master's Degree in Marketing from Georgetown University. He worked in the Marketing field for many years prior to retirement. He was a WWII Army Veteran. He was a very active and long time member of St. Catherine of Siena Church of West Dundee and a former C.C.D. teacher and Eucharistic Minister for the parish.
Survivors include two sons, Robert of West Dundee and John (Jacqui) of Philadelphia, Penn.; a granddaughter, Emma Slominski; and a grandson, AndrewSlominski, both of Philadelphia, Penn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janet A. (nee Murdock) Slominski on Sept. 22, 1996, whom he married
on May 18, 1942.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 28, 2001 in the St. Catherine of Siena Church, West Dundee, the Rev. Richard Rosinski officiating. Burial will follow in the Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m., Thursday in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee and on Friday in the church from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, Masses would be appreciated.
Reba K. Spitzer
Reba K. Spitzer, age 67, of Elgin passed away Sunday in her home. She was born August 2, 1934 in West Virginia and was the daughter of William and Hallie Kennedy.
Survived by three children, Mike (Sharon) Spitzer of Elgin, Greg (Pam) Spitzer of Hampshire, IL, Kimberly Lynn Iwicki of Roselle, IL; Nine grandchildren, Dawn, Dwain, Wesley, Molly and Troy Spitzer, Josh, Joe, Brandy and Donna; three sisters, Maudy Lockhart, Marie Sauer and Princess Adkins.
preceded in death by two sons, Troy Allen Spitzer and Timothy Spitzer; two brothers and one sister.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 28, 2001 in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin from 4-8:00pm. Funeral services will be private. Burial will be private in West Virginia.
Mary L. Krueger
Mary L. Krueger, 70, of East Dundee, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at St. Alexis Hospital in Hoffman Estates.
She was born April 21, 1932 in Elgin the daughter of John and Beulah (Francisco) James. Mrs. Krueger was a life-long resident of the Elgin and Dundee areas. She married
Arthur C. Krueger on April 26, 1948 in St. Charles. Mary had been a member of the Lake in the Hills American Legion Post #1231 and the China-Burma-India Auxiliary.
Survivors include her daughters Betty (Joe) Ori of Orlando, FL and Kay (Bob) Ballschmiede of Algonquin, and her son Donald (Connie) Krueger of East Dundee; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arthur who passed away on April 3, 1996, son Ronald in infancy, three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 27, at the James O'Connor Funeral Home, 11603 E. Main St., Huntley. Burial will be in the Huntley cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 150 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60601.
John Douglass McCall
John Douglass McCall, 70 of Dundee passed away Monday, September 16, 2002 in Crystal Lake.
He was born March 30, 1932 in Lufkin, Texas, the son of Gordon and Myrtle McCall.
He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. On June 4, 1955, he married
Edna Creech in Milwaukee.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years; a daughter, Lori (James) Sprague of Dexter, Michigan; a son, John (Michele) McCall; two grandsons, Kent and Clark Sprague; two granddaughters, Hannah and Emily McCall; two brothers, Charles (Nota) of Mt. Vernon, Ohio and Wayne (Vivian) of Lufkin, Texas; four nephews; and two nieces.
Graveside services were held at Dundee Township East cemetery.
Friends are invited to a Memorial Service, Saturday, September 28, 2002 at 2:30 PM in the First Congregational Church, Crystal Lake.

Howard W. Pearson
Howard W. Pearson, 88, former long time resident of East Dundee and resident of Los Angeles since August 2001, died Saturday in Los Angeles. He was born in Batavia on June 2, 1914, the son of George and Hilda (nee Carlson) Pearson. Mr. Pearson was owner and operator of Pearson Hardware in East Dundee for nearly 30 years. Following his retirement he was a part time employee of Carson-Pirie-Scott in West Dundee. He was a long time member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of West Dundee, and a W.W. II Veteran proudly serving in the Ninth Air Force in the European theater from January 1943 thru September 1945 with the 67th tactical reconnaissance group as a Communication Chief. He was an avid amateur radio operator maintaining his license since 1933. His call letters were W9LTZ.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Esther (nee Haertel) Pearson; two daughters, Marge Pearson and her husband, Bob Gottlieb of Santa Monica, CA and Gwen Pearson and her husband, Norm Potoksky of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren, Casey and Andrea Pearson-Gottlieb of Santa Monica; one sister, Alwanda (Kenneth) Anderson of Geneva, IL and one aunt, Eleanor Johnson of Batavia.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Russell.
Funeral services will be on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, West Dundee. The Rev. Steve Simon, Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dundee Twp. East cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-8 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee and on Saturday in church from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. Monserrate Mejias-Ruiz
Age 64, of Elgin, passed away Tuesday in Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. She was born December 15, 1937 in Puerto Rico and was the daughter of Jose and Matilde (Torres) Mejias.
A follower of Christ, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all, "Monsi" as her friends knew her, came to settle in Elgin in 1962 by way of Brooklyn, NY from her home neighborhood of "Hoya Mala" in the town of San Sebastian, Puerto Rico. The joy of her life was her family, attending church services at Iglesia Carismatica- Puerta De Sion in Elgin, and helping others.
Survived by her husband, Juan F. Ruiz of Elgin; three children, Rosendo "Ron" (Mirian) Mendez of Elgin, Mildred Jackson of Jacksonville, FL, Jimmy Mendez of Elgin; eight grandchildren, Christina A., Alexander J., Jerricho J., Samantha A., and Adam A. Mendez; Luis N. Cruz, Tania A. Wynn and Reggie Bo Jackson; two brothers, Rigoberto Mejias and Monserrate "Raul" Mejias; three sisters, Amelia and Demitria Mejias, Virginia Mejias- Viana.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-8:00 PM in the funeral home.
Khambao Sengsopha
Khambao Sengsopha was born December 10, 1909 in Bane Done Village, Paklai City and Sayaboury Province, Laos.
She was the oldest of three children of Thao Am and Nang Vanh.
She was preceded in death by her brother and sister.
Khambao and Chao Nokham Sengsopha were married
and to them were born eight children; six daughters and two sons, four deceased, survivors include four daughters, one in Thailand, three in United States; 36 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.
She fled Laos in 1978 to live with here daughter in Thailand where she lived for three years and she found her new settlement in United States in 1981.
In 1992, she became Christian, member in good standing, loved by all of us, remained a faithful and a strong Christian witness until she died of natural causes on 9/24/02 at 12:10 a.m. She finally was received into the Father's loving hand in Heaven. There will be no more death, mourning, crying or pain. We realized over again that the world where we live now is not our home and that we are just passing by.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be on Friday from 5-9 p.m. in the funeral home.
Rev. Marvin A. Fredrickson
Rev. Marvin A. Fredrickson, 71, of Byron, Il died at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, September 19, 2003 in Swedish American Hospital. Born April 23, 1932 in Aurora, IL, son of Erland and Lily (Malmborg) Fredrickson. Lived in Rockford area since 1995, coming from Elgin, IL. married to Elaine I. Nelson in Wheaton, IL on June 18, 1960. He was a teacher for the Elgin Public School District for 25 years, retiring in 1994. Marvin graduated from Wheaton College with his Bachelor of Arts degree and received two Masters Degrees, one from Wheaton College and the second from Northern Illinois University. A veteran of the United States Navy. Member of First Evangelical Free Church, where he was currently serving as an elder. He was an ordained pastor, devoting his life to men's ministry and discipleship. He was a strong family man. He was a wood worker and ship model builder. He was active with the Navigators Organization.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine; daughter, Sharon (Christopher) Kranz of Carpentersville, IL; son, Stephen (Lisa) Fredrickson of Asheville, NC; three grandchildren, Caitlin, Joshua and Zachary Kranz. Predeceased by his parents and his brother, Harley.
Memorial Services at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at First Evangelical Free Church, 2223 N. Mulford Road, Rockford, IL with Reverend Brian Erickson officiating and at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2003 at Willow Creek Community Church, Barrington, IL with Steve Covell officiating. Herman Gruber
Herman Gruber, 66, of Elgin passed away Thursday, September 25, 2003. He was born December 22, 1936 in Barrington, IL and was the son of Herman and Vera Gruber, and stepson of Oscar Hauri. Herman was a resident of Elgin, IL for most of his life, and had been employed by Baker-Road Co. prior to his retirement.
He is survived by three daughters, Ellen (Scott) Parrish of TN, Dale (Rick) Friese of Elgin, Pauline (Dennis Mika) Gruber of Downers Grove, IL; two sons, Daniel (Jill) Gruber of Grayslake, IL and Andrew (Lisa) Gruber of Crystal Lake, IL; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nancy Bates of CA, Carol Bauers of WI; one step-sister, Kathleen Myers of Wisconsin, IL; one step-brother, Lawrence Hauri of WI; two half-brothers, Kenneth Hauri of Gages Lake, IL, James Hauri of Waukegan, IL; his step-father, Oscar Hauri of WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Susan Gruber; one brother, Herbert Gruber.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, with Chaplain Gary Blobaum officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be on Sunday from 12:00 noon until the time of services in the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois.
Mary Margaret Newman
Mary Margaret Newman, 94, of Elgin passed away September 6, 2003 at St. Joseph Hospital. She was a resident at Countryside Manor. Mary was born March 25, 1909 in Anderson Indiana, the daughter of John Edward and Barbara (Rolles) Newman. She was retired from her career with the Chicago Tribune. For years she worked as a secretary for the Chicago Herald American, acquired by the Chicago Tribune, and worked on the book The Chicago Tribune (a history of the newspaper) by Lloyd Wendt.
Mary was a devoted Catholic, and most recently had attended St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Elgin. She was a dear and special friend to many.
She is survived by her nephews and nieces Dr. John (Anne) Newman of Naperville; James (Kelly) Newman of Richmond Hills, GA; Richard (Davona) Newman of Phoenix, AZ; Louise (William) McKay of St. Charles; William (Susan) Newman of Kirkland, WA; and Robert (Susan) Newman of Vernon Hills; and Barbara (David) Pigott of Sun City, AZ.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father; two brothers, John (Helen) and William (Florence); and a nephew, Michael.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate a Memorial Mass on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 215 Thomas More Dr., Elgin at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Hogan officiating.

Lillian I. Witt
Lillian I. Witt, 76, of Woodstock, former many year resident of Fox River Grove, died Wednesday at the Woodstock Residence in Woodstock. She was born in Bloomingdale, Illinois on February 20, 1927. She was the daughter of Edward and Martha (nee Hitzman) Oldenburg.
She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Palatine and a memberof the 50's Club of Palatine.
She is survived by her daughter, Noreen (Otto) Bottcher of Woodstock; two grandsons, Rusty (Tina) Bottcher of Marengo, Tom Bottcher of Fox River Grove; one granddaughter, Lisa (Steve) Bushy of Crystal Lake; four great-grandchildren, Laura and Austin Bottcher and Alyssa and Stephen Bushy; three sisters, her twin sister, Lucille Ciepley of Palatine, Elrena (Arthur) Bottcher of Harvard and Dorothy (Melvin) Wilkening of Elgin; one brother, Albert (Dorothy) Oldenburd of Shady Hill, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman L. Witt on October 29, 2003; three sisters and one brother.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. The Rev. Robert Clausen will officiate. Burial will follow in the River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee. Visitation will be on Friday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee.
