Shirley A. Spear
Shirley A. Spear, 90, of Elgin, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2003 in the Sherman West Court, Elgin. She was born January 26, 1913 in Half Day, IL and was the daughter of Almon and Elizabeth (Catlow) Rockenbach. Shirley graduated from the Sherman Hospital School of Nursing in 1939, and had worked for Sherman Hospital and Dr. Glasshagel for many years prior to her retirement. Shirley was also Assistant to the acting Adjutant for the American Legion Post #57 for many years, and earned a lifetime membership.
She was a member of the Crystal Lake Historical Society, the American Legion Post #57 Ladies Auxiliary, and held many positions, and the Sherman Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Marilyn Spear of East Dundee, IL; her grandson, Royal M. Spear of East Dundee, IL; four brothers, Raymond (Charlene), Lyle, Rodney (Doris), and Philip (Yvonne) Rockenbach; three sisters, Mary Knox, Sarah Belcher, and Dory Forsythe; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Royal S. Spear in 1976; her son, Royal R. Spear in 2003; three brothers, Robert, George, and Joseph Rockenbach; three sisters, Esther Mills, Elizabeth Wolff, and Ruth Hare.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 12:00 noon in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with Tom Totton officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the fu

Bernice Ellen Bain
Bernice Ellen Bain (nee Klingenberg), 66, of Elgin, passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001 in her home.
She was born May 15, 1935 in Elgin, the daughter of the late Irvin and Ella (nee Witt) Klingenberg.
A resident of Elgin the past 47 years, formerly of Barrington. A 25 year employee of Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin.
Survivors include a son, Dale (Susan) Sphatt of Grayslake; two sisters, Elaine (Edward) Krabbe of Harvard and Barbara (Daniel) Rowe of Lenexa, Kansas; a brother, Melvin Klingenberg of Huntley; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Sphatt in 1966.
Memorial Services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001 at the Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Ltd., 410 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake. Interment will be privately held.
Friends of the family may visit at the funeral chapel on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of services.
Memorials may be made to Jehovah's Witnesses Worldwide Work.

The Reverend James Alan Schroeder
The Reverend James Alan Schroeder, 63, of Elgin, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001 from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born in Elmhurst, Ill. on Aug. 27, 1938, the son of Arthur W. and Alpha O. (nee Abel) Schroeder.
He was a 1956 graduate of Dundee Community High School, a 1961 graduate of Concordia University, Fort Wayne, Ind. He earned his Master of Divinity Degree from Concordia in 1965 and was ordained into the Christian Ministry in August of 1965 in the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, East Dundee. During his ministry, Pastor Schroeder served Covenant Lutheran Church, Milwaukee, Wis.; Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Hope Lutheran Church, LaGrange, Ill.; Faith Lutheran Church, Marinette, Wis.; and Our Savior Lutheran Church, Morristown, Tenn. He retired on July 12, 2001 after serving as Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Streamwood for 12 years.
Survivors include his wife, Linda (nee Wemhoener) Schroeder, whom he married on June 14, 1970 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, Mich.; three children, Chad, Todd andStephanie; a sister, Jean (Herman)Becker of East Dundee; and two brothers, Duane (Gina) Schroeder of Lake Zurich and Kenneth "Pinky" (Irma) Schroeder of East Dundee. Many nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ryan James Schroeder in 1976.
Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday in the Grace Lutheran Church of Streamwood, the Rev. James Bach officiating. Burial will follow in the Clarendon Hills cemetery, Darien, Ill.
Visitation will be 3-9 p.m., Tuesday in the Grace Lutheran Church, 780 S. Bartlett Rd., Streamwood.
Please omit flowers, the family has requested memorials may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church and School Ministries.
The Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee is in charge of arrangements.

The Honorable Loren J. Strotz
The Honorable Loren J. Strotz, 74, of Aurora, Clerk of Appellate Court of the State of Illinois Second District, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2001 at Provena PineView Care Center, St. Charles.
Survivors include a daughter, Sheila (Jack) Slater; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephew and cousins.
He was preceded in death by hisbeloved wife, Pearl (nee Bertrand); a brother, Robert H. Strotz; and his parents, John and Olga (nee Koerfer) Strotz.
Memorial Reception for family and friends will be announced at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 77 E. Monroe St., 12th Flr., Chicago, IL. 60603-5700.
Cremation Society of Illinois is handling arrangements.

Lorraine H. Austin
Lorraine H. Austin, 83, of Lindenwood, IL passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at her home. She was born May 23, 1919 near Esmond, IL, the daughter of William and Bernice (Holmes) Poliska.
She was a member of the Lindenwood Union Church and retired as a bookkeeper from Burch & Carmichael.
Lorraine married Eugene H. Bain on December 12, 1938 and he preceded her on November 2, 1968. She married A. Gail Austin on January 26, 1974 in Lindenwood, IL and he preceded her on April 13, 1991. She was also preceded by her parents and a son Jim, on January 13, 1963.
Survivors include two daughters: Jeannene (Jerry) Adams of Lindenwood, IL and Verla (Ward) Sterett of Rockford, IL; two stepdaughters: Reggie (Alan) Hale of St. Louis, MO and Patt (Joel) Topp of Winterhaven, FL; a stepson, Steven (Kathy) Austin of Hampshire, IL; nine grandchildren: Craig (Judy) Adams, Jim (Val) Adams, Lorri (Dave) Mayer, Steve Reints, Tim Reints, Mary Gail Baranski, Michael (Andrea) Austin, Mark Austin, and Jennifer Austin; nine great-grandchildren: Ally Friday, Danielle Adams, Stephanie Adams, Jack Adams, Alexa Adams, Amber Mayer, Jonathan Austin, Talia Baranski, and Tiffani Hodge.
Funeral services will be held at the Lindenwood Union Church in Lindenwood, IL on Friday, October 4, 2002, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Les McClelland officiating. Visitation Thursday, October 3, 2002, at Unger-Horner Funeral Home in Rochelle, IL from 4-8 p.m. Burial at Lindenwood cemetery.
A memorial has been established.

Wilhelmina Sosnowy Bornemann
Wilhelmina Sosnowy Bornemann, 88, of League City, Texas, formerly of Algonquin, IL, died Friday, September 20, in Harbourview Care Center. Born December 16, 1913 in Galveston, Texas to John and Helene (Schilke) Sosnowy. She married The Reverend Theodore Bornemann on February 6, 1935 in Galveston and they moved to Algonquin in 1939. She lived there until 1996 when she relocated to Texas, living first at Kruse Memorial Village in Brenham and then at Harbourview Care Center in League City.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Theodore on December 11, 1990.
Survived by a son, Leonard (Gina) Bornemann; a daughter, Lenore (Rev. Martin) Teske; a brother, Dr. Joseph (Colleen) Sosnowy; two sisters-in-law, Stella Sosnowy and Edna Sosnowy; grandchildren, Andrew and Mary Teske, Lisa (Bill) Hoover, Sarah (Mark) Pollex, Rachel Teske, and Heidi (Michael) Cline; three great-grandsons, and many nieces and nephews.
preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John and Karl.
Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 5 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Algonquin. Rev. Rollin Kuznik will officiate. Private interment Algonquin cemetery. There will be no visitation. Rochelle (Gowey) Fischbach
Rochelle (Gowey) Fischbach age 40 passed away on September 18, 2002. She had been a resident of Waukegan.
Survivors include: her daughter, Diana Fischbach-LeBeau, two sons, Robert and Christopher, her parents Barbara and Dennis Gowey, her brother, Charles, her sister, Sandra (Philip) Rasmussen, a niece, Shaundra and a nephew, Lukas, her good friend, Walter Petruck, her ex-husband, Bob.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan and a brother, Douglas.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, October 4, 2002 at the Hayes room, Our Lady of Humility Church, 10655 Wadsworth Rd., Beach Park, IL.

Rose M. Funk
Rose M. Funk, 78, of Elgin passed away Wednesday in the Apostolic Christian Resthaven, Elgin. She was born November 7, 1924 in Gettysburg, SD and was the daughter of Gotthilf and Margarete Walker. Rose was a registered nurse and had worked for Drs. Hoban, Slager, Fiedler, and Koo office for 18 years, and the Elgin Mental Health Center eight years prior to her retirement. Member of the Wesley United Methodist Church of Elgin.
Survivors include three children, Barbara Smithberg of Elgin, James (Donna) Funk of Prairie View, IL, and Kathryn Johnson of Elkhorn, WI, four grandchildren, Roger (Mary Kay) Smithberg, Amanda (Gene) Hare, Sarah Funk and Richard Gregory, five great grandchildren, her brother Edward Walker of Chicago, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Richard Funk, her son-in-law Donald Smithberg.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of services in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Apostolic Christian Resthaven.

Frank J. Greenberg
Lt. Col. Frank J. Greenberg, U.S. Army, ret., died at the age of 93 on August 29 in Ogden, UT. He was born in Chicago on August 21, 1910, the son of Henry and Mary Greenberg.
Frank grew up in Elgin, IL where he learned food purchasing while working in his parents' grocery store. He served for 20 years in the Army Quartermaster Corps, a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. After retiring from the Army, he worked in civil service until 1979, serving as Chief of Dairy for the Defense Supply Agency. He loved to travel and was an avid golfer for 80 years.
LTC Greenberg entered the U.S. Army in 1942. He was commissioned as a second Lieutenant in 1943 and sent to Britain, in preparation for the Allied invasion of Europe. He served as part of the D-Day Invasion forces and the Allied ground forces in the battle for Europe in France, the Netherlands and Germany. He helped run the famous Red Ball Express, supplying the front lines of the Allied forces.
After WWII, he remained in the Army and was assigned to Ft. Lee, VA and Denver, CO, where he married Lorine McDermott. He served in Japan during the Korean War, and taught at the U.S. Army European Quartermaster School in Lengries, Germany. He retired from the Army in 1962 after assignments at Ft. Ord, CA and Stockton, CA.
He worked for the Defense Supply Agency in Chicago and Philadelphia. He was a resident of Mt. Laurel, NJ from 1977 until 2002.
He is survived by his brother, Joseph, of St. Charles, IL; his four children, Nancy, Wendy, and Daniel Greenberg and Marcia Ardinger; eight grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Lorine and his twin brother, Morton of Palatine, IL.
Burial and services will be at Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, VA on October 8 at 8:45 a.m.

Joseph J. Sauer
Joseph J. Sauer, 46, of Elgin passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at his home. He was born November 18, 1956 in Newport News, VA, the son of Gerald R. and Carmen Rose (nee Garcia) Sauer.
Survivors include his former wife, Mary (nee Young); two sons, Benjamin and Timothy Sauer; one daughter, Sarah Sauer; his father, Gerald R. Sauer; four sisters, Michelle Johnston of Roselle, Dianne Butt of Whitewater, WI, Kathryn Sullivan of Hanover Park, Susan Sauer of Woodstock; three brothers, Gregory of Bartlett, Christopher of Grand Rapids, MI, Thomas of Hokah, MN.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Carmen Rose Sauer (nee Garcia); a nephew, Jeremy Welu.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 3, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. at Countryside Funeral Home, 1640 S. Greenmeadows Blvd. (at Barrington Rd.), Streamwood/Schaumburg to St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 250 Thomas More Dr., Elgin for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary cemetery, Hokah, MN. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 2 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to Joseph Sauer's children's education fund would be appreciated.

Frank William Schaffter, Jr.
Frank William Schaffter, Jr., 58, of Bartlett, formerly of Spotswood and South Planfield, NJ, died Sunday, September 28, 2003. He was born January 31, 1945 in Orange, NJ.
He was retired from Discover Financial Services and was a Little League coach and umpire in the late 70's. He was an avid sports watcher on TV, enjoyed watching his grandson, Joey participate in sports. Frank enjoyed flower gardening. He was quiet, effective but preferred to be in the background, always putting others first. Frank was a loyal company man, mentor to many, tackled problems head-on, always tried to find a solution. He loved the Yankees. Frank was a graduate of South Plainfield High School and of Gettysburg College in PA.
Surviving are his wife, Sharyn Schaffter (nee Gulick) of Bartlett; a daughter, Eileen Schaffter, a son, Greg Schaffter; a grandson, Joey, all of Bartlett; his father, Frank William Schaffter, Sr.; a brother, Robert (Phyllis) Schaffter of Monroe Township, NJ.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eileen Marion (nee Huntley) Schaffter.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 4 at 9:45 a.m. at Countryside Funeral Home, 950 South Bartlett Rd. (at Stearns Rd, ), Bartlett to St. Peter Damian Church for Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Bartlett cemetery, Bartlett, IL. Visitation will be on Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home, 950 South Bartlett Rd (at Stearns), Bartlett. James G. Flagg
James G. Flagg, 55, of Dresbach MN died Saturday, September 29 at the Mosher Veteran's Home. He was born in Berkeley, IL on September 11, 1946 to William and Laura Flagg. Jim joined the Army in 1967 and was a survivor of the Vietnam War and had spent 11 months and 28 days on duty there. He was a resident of Cornell, WI for 18 years where he lived with his father and step-mother Frances. He has been residing at the Mosher Veteran's Home since 1991. He belonged to the Gitten's-Leidel American Legion Post 595, La Crescent, the VFW and Riverside United Methodist Church of Dakota, MN. Jim never met anyone that he didn't love and would talk your ears off. He is survived by his mother Laura Moreno of Hamburg, NY, a brother, William of Appleton, WI, his guardian step-uncle Ray (Norma) Seaman of Carpentersville. Many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and a thousand friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his father and step-mother.
Visitation will be on Thursday, October 4, 2001 from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home West Dundee. Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to the Riverside United Methodist Church of Dakota, MN.

Ervin "Lindy" Lindorfer
Ervin "Lindy" Lindorfer, 91, of Elgin, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin.
He was born Aug. 9, 1910 in Elgin, the son of Charles and Helma Lindorfer.
He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Elgin.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Erna; two daughters, Judy (Ron) Fritz and Kay Lindorfer, both of Elgin; a granddaughter, Melissa (Larry) Kurek of Elgin; a grandson, Eric Fritz of Elgin; a great-granddaughter, Lacie Kurek; and a great-grandson, Trevor Kurek.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lorine Forster.
Funeral Services will be 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001 in Madison Funeral Home, Elgin, the Rev. Martin Balzer officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m., Wednesday in the funeral home.
