Helen Louise (Winslow) Chase
Helen Louise (Winslow) Chase died on September 28, 2003, at Our Island Home on Nantucket Island, MA. She was 80 years old. She was born and raised on Nantucket Island, the daughter of William H. and Helena A. (Guest) Winslow.
Helen Louise (Winslow) Chase attended Nantucket schools, received a B.S. in Education from Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, MA in 1943, and her M.A. in American History from the University of Wisconsin in 1969. She also pursued studies at the University of Iowa, Northern Illinois University and University of Illinois. She studied and did independent research in American Maritime History at the Munson Institute at Mystic Seaport, Inc., and also studied foreign policy in the South Pacific at the University of Hawaii. She spent a sabbatical year in the South Pacific researching American whaling records in Australia and New Zealand. She also did graduate work in Nantucket history at the University of Massachusetts.
Helen (Winslow) Chase taught American history on Nantucket from 1944-51 and for five years in Wisconsin. She came to District U-46 in 1957 and taught in the Social Studies Department at Elgin High School for 24 years before retiring in 1981. She was advisor to the Elgin High School Girls Club for many years. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Elgin. She usually spent her summers back on Nantucket Island working on whaling logbooks and journals for the Whaling Museum at the Nantucket Historical Association. She wrote on many topics, including the Jethro Coffin House Chronology, 1686-1986; First Congregational Church and Old North Vestry Chronology, 1725-1988; co-editor with Edourd A. Stackpole of survivor Thomas Nickerson's account of The Loss of The Ship Essex Sunk By A Whale.
Helen Louise Winslow married
James Franklin Chase in 1981. He died in 1998. She was a member of many organizations, including a life member of the Maria Mitchell Association, life member of the Nantucket Historical Association, on the board of the Homested, Inc., and the Ladies Union Circle of the First Congregational Church. Her large collection of papers and books reflecting her lifelong interest and research into the history of Nantucket and whaling will be a resource for generations to come at the Nantucket Historical Association. She will be missed.

Rose K. Davis
Rose K. Davis, 95, of Elgin, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2004 at Apostolic Christian Resthaven in Elgin.
She was born October 5, 1908 in Elgin, the daughter of Gottlieb and Rosa (Schock) Greiner. Rose married
William R. "Bill" Davis on June 16, 1934 in Elgin. They resided in Elgin for a number of years before she moved to Hampshire in 1964. She was the consummate homemaker, talented and intelligent, and knew how to stretch a meal. She loved music, reading, and sewing. She had also worked for the former Wilcox Pharmacy in Hampshire for a number of years.
Surviving are two daughters, Karen Wesemann of Marengo and Cynthia (Jim) Eickhorst of Marengo; six grandchildren, Charles Reiser, Cheryl Reiser, Christine (Jeffrey) Giertz, Janine (Jeffery) Pease, Vance (Sally) Eickhorst, and Sara Eickhorst; six great-grandchildren; a good friend and former son-in-law, Charles (Liz) Reiser of Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill in January of 1979; her grandson, James Eickhorst; brothers, William, Christ, Fred, and Carl Greiner; sisters, Emily Schock, Louise Schock, and Helen Bell.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 2 at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire with the Rev. Steve Ziegler of the Zion United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Hampshire Center cemetery.
Visitation will be held prior to services on Monday at the funeral home from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Fidencio G. Pena
Fidencio G. Pena, 67, of St. Charles died Thursday at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. He was born November 16, 1936 in Sabinal, TX. Employed by Moline Corporation for over 20 years before his retirement.
He is survived by his wife Maria; daughter, Michelle Dickson of St. Charles; his granddaughter, Amanda.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolfo and Guadalupe (Gallegos) Pena; brothers, Asuncion Dela Pena, Juan Pena, Ponfilo Pena and Jose Adolfo Pena.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 2, 2004 at St. Patrick Church 408 Cedar St. St. Charles. Burial will be at Resurrection cemetery Geneva Twp. Visitation will be held from 2:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Yurs Funeral Home St. Charles.
Robert Haas
Robert Haas, 101, of Elgin died Saturday, January 26, 2002 in the Apostolic Christian Rest Haven Nursing Home. He was born June 7, 1900 in Germany and was the son of George and Christina Haas. He had been a resident of Elgin before moving to Morton, IL for 25 years, returning to Elgin in 1991.
Member of the Apostolic Christian Church of Elgin.
Surviving are six daughters, Margaret (Earl) Zeltwanger of Bremen, IN, Mary Baumgartner of Palos Verdes Estates, CA, Ruth (Richard) Gralow of Palos Verdes Estates, CA, Milli (Paul) Leman of Geneva, IL, Gert (Jim) Carius of Morton, IL and Ann (Richard) Shors of Cut Bank, MT; three sons, Richard (Gudrun) Haas of Naperville, IL, Robert (Carole) Haas of Willcox, AZ and Paul Haas of Willcox, AZ; 32 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

Richard B. "Dick" Happ
Richard B. "Dick" Happ, 64, of Genoa, passed away suddenly Tuesday, January 29, 2002 in his home.
He was born January 7, 1938 in Buffalo Grove, IL, the son of William and Leona (Weidner) Happ. He was a 1956 graduate of Arlington High School and worked 17 years as a mechanic for Lattof Chevrolet of Arlington Heights. He also farmed in Buffalo Grove before moving to Genoa Township where he has farmed the past 15 years.
Dick was a very active member of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church of Hampshire serving on the finance board and as an usher. He was also a member of the Northern Illinois Steam Power Club.
Surviving are his wife, Gloria J. (Streetz) Happ, whom he married
October 18, 1980 in Buffalo Grove; three children, Stacia at Northern Illinois University, Richard "Rick" at Kishwaukee College and Jena at home; a sister, Ann (Fred) Hildebrandt of South Beloit and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 1, 2002 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 297 E. Jefferson St., Hampshire with the Rev. Joseph P. Nicolosi officiating. Burial will be in the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire. Dorothy G. Kaempfer, R.N.
Dorothy G. Kaempfer, R.N., age 77 of Dundee, died Saturday, January 26, 2002. She was born in Carpentersville on April 10, 1924, the daughter of William F. and Alma J. (nee Swanson) Kaempfer.
Dorothy was a life long resident of the Dundee area, a 1942 graduate of Dundee Community High School and a 1945 graduate of Sherman Hospital School of Nursing. Dorothy worked for Drs. Warren and Nora Miller in Algonquin for many years. She was a life long member of the St. James Episcopal Church in West Dundee and a former many year member of the choir. She was a member of the Sherman Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.
She is survived by a sister, Mildred (Warren) Kamp of Dundee; a niece, Susan (Ralph) Norman of Freeport; three nephews, Ronald (Janet) Kamp of Naperville, Gary (Jayne) Kamp of Bettendorf, IA and Roger (Martha) Kamp of Rockford; a grand-nephew, Jonathan Kamp; seven grand-nieces, Stephanie and Jeannine Norman; Amy, Sara, Melissa, Rebecca and Danielle Kamp.

Kenneth H. Myers, 91, of Galena, IL passed away Monday, January 28, 2002 in Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Ruth (nee Meyers); a son, Gary (Marcia) Myers; eight grandchildren, Bret (Brenda), Kristy, Kevin, Tara (Frank) Fuller, Lana (Greg) Myroth, Sara (Tom) Austin, Rachel (Damon) Walker and Alexis Myers and also seven great-grandchildren.

Susan L. Schwabe
Susan L. Schwabe, 52, of Carpentersville, died Monday, January 28, 2002 at Maplewood Healthcare Center in Elgin. She was born in Elkhorn, Wisconsin on January 19, 1950.
Sue was a kind and loving person who will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Gary H. Schwabe, whom she married
on May 30, 1981; three sons, John Zweifel of West Dundee, Jeffrey (Erin) Zweifel of Lake In The Hills and Jeremy Zweifel of Carpentersville; a grandson, Hunter; her parents, Earl and Hazel Ruegge of Elgin; a brother, Charles (Marcia) Ruegge of Elgin; a sister, Connie (Ken) McLynn of East Dundee; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harry and Adeline Schwabe of Carpentersville. Sue is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents and a nephew.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Burial will be private.
Juanita Margaret Collins
Juanita Margaret Collins, age 98, a resident of Lake Forest, CA and a former resident of Elgin, IL passed away on January 26, 2003 in Lake Forest, CA. She was a homemaker for over 70 years. She was a resident of Elgin, IL from 1948 to 1991 before moving to Orange County, CA. She was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Dorwaldt (Carl), Mission Viejo, CA; two grandchildren, James Dorwaldt and Jayne Lewis; two great-grandchildren, Erica and Jack.

Gerald W. "Jerry" Conro
Gerald W. "Jerry" Conro, 77, of Hampshire, passed away Monday, January 27, 2003 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.
He was born April 7, 1925 in Hampshire the son of William and Delia (Herrmann) Conro. He was a lifelong resident of Hampshire and a 1943 graduate of Hampshire High School. Jerry married
Lois D. Martens at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elgin on June 6, 1948.
Mr. Conro was employed by the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and school in Hampshire as custodian and bus driver for 29 years, retiring in 1996. He also drove the bus for District 300 athletic events.
He was a life long member of the St. Charles Boromeo Catholic Church where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a longtime member of the Catholic Order of Foresters serving as Chief Ranger and Youth Director and became an inducted member of the Forester Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996. Mr. Conro served with the Hampshire Volunteer Fire Department from 1968 until the present time. He served on the Hampshire Emergency Medical Service from 1978 until 2001, becoming an EMT in 1981.
Surviving are his wife, Lois, three sons, James (Elizabeth) Conro of St. Charles, David (Judy) Conro of Burlington, Michael (Sheila) Conro and daughter Jean (Rick) Goff, both of Hampshire; 11 grandchildren, Matthew Conro, Sarah (Gary) Kiehnau, Laura (Jesse) Panke, Krystal Sprague, Christopher and Cassandra Conro, Timothy and Kelli Goff, Daniel, Kevin and Kathleen Conro; a brother William (Carol) Conro and a sister, Elaine (Eugene Diedrick, both of Hampshire and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Lucille and Charlene, nephew Kim Conro and sister-in-law Anita "Sis" Conro.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 31, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 297 E. Jefferson St., in Hampshire with Monsignor William J. Clausen officiating. Burial will be in the St. Charles Borromeo cemetery in Hampshire.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Frederick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire with Rosary at 3:15 p.m.

Josephine M. Heyden
Josephine M. Heyden, 77, of Elgin passed away Sunday in South Bend, IN. She was born June 22, 1925 in Chicago, the daughter of Frank and Lula Turner Pace. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elgin and attended Waller High School in Chicago. She was formerly employed at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia (Raymond) Truty of Belvidere, one son, Edward (Laurie) of South Bend, IN, five grandchildren, Brad, Robbie, Angela, Tommy and Danny and one great grandson, Christian.

Gloria M. Martini
Gloria M. Martini, 74, of Vancouver, WA passed away January 18, 2003 at home. She was born March 24, 1928 in Elgin, IL the daughter of Ed and Virginia Young. Gloria was raised in Carpentersville and was a 1946 graduate of Dundee Community High School. She was united in marriage to retired Lt. Major Joseph Martini in 1947 at St. Catherine of Dundee; having celebrated 55 years of marriage in October 2002.
Gloria had a beautiful soprano singing voice and had many leads in school plays as well as singing for weddings. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, flowers, travel, going to the opera and singing. Gloria was an active member of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, Sacramento, CA. She was involved in many Catholic activities as she traveled with her U.S. Air Force husband and family in the U.S. and abroad including Rome and Newfoundland.
Survivors include her husband, Joe; four sons and one daughter: Michael (Nanette), Andrew, Jeffrey (Lisa), Christine (Michael) Eaton, all of Vancouver, WA and Daniel of Carmichael, CA, four sisters: Nancy (Ken) Krueger of Rockford, Sally (Robert) Rattray of Algonquin, Julie (Roger) Henderson of South Elgin and Kathi (Joseph) Magerl of Cary, five brothers: Thomas (Dolly) of Florida, Jack (Chris) of Iowa, Edward (Barbara) of West Dundee, Gerry (Mary) of Carpentersville and Phillip of Belvidere. Also surviving are eight grandchildren.
preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Virginia Young, in-laws Bruno and Anna Martini, son Lawrence in 1971 and sister Catherine.
Vigil and Mass was held Wednesday at Memorial Gardens, Vancouver, WA with interment in Carmichael, CA where she was a resident for many years. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 8, 2003 at 1 p.m. at St. Catherine's of Sienna Church, West Dundee.

Doris M. Prindiville, 83, of Elgin died January 28, 2003 at Sherman Hospital. She was born November 4, 1919 in Genoa, IL the daughter of Axel and Mabel Overlee.
Survivors include her three daughters, Kathleen (Larry) Heusmann of Chicago Hts., Kristine (Robert) Ash of Elgin, Mary Kay Prindiville of Bartlett, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
