Medearis served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946, spending the last year in France and Germany, where he saw firsthand the horrors of Dachau. This tour whetted his already lively interest in history and he was an authority on World War II for the rest of his life.
Chuck, as he was known to family and friends, moved with his wife Betty to Elgin in 1953 where he taught fifth grade at Sheridan School and later became prinicpal. He could remember a date, a name or an event from the past when everyone around him was at a loss and did it with self-deprecating humor that made it seem easy.
