Theodore Applehoff
Theodore Applehoff, 82, of Rolling Meadows, formerly of Elgin and Twin Lakes, WI, died Saturday, January 26, 2002, in Manor Care Health Services in Rolling Meadows.
He was born October 17, 1919 in Elgin and was the son of Oscar and Grace Applehoff.
He had owned and operated York Jewelers in Elmhurst before retiring. He was a veteran having served in the Marines. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Elgin, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Tioga Post of Wood Dale, IL, Past member of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and a Past member of the Elmhurst Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are a daughter, Susan (James) Weichert of Arlington Heights, IL; a son, Ted (Diane) Applehoff of Bloomingdale, IL; six grandchildren, Chris and Jenny Weichert, Scott (Karen) Applehoff, Kevin (Laura) Applehoff, Karen (Casey) Beckley and Sarah Applehoff; a great granddaughter, Brittany Applehoff; and two brothers, Bud (June) Applehoff and Bob (Arleen) Applehoff both of Elgin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley in 1994; a sister, Violet Thomsen; and a brother, Fred Applehoff.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 AM in the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin with Rev. Thomas O'Connor officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park cemetery.
Visitation will be in the funeral home on Monday fro 4 to 9 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul's United Church of Christ.

Felix "Doc" Grigg
Felix "Doc" Grigg, 80, a life long resident of St. Charles, passed away peacefully, on Friday, January 25, 2002 at his home in St. Charles after a lingering illness.
Mr. Grigg was born November 20, 1921 in St. Charles, the son of Ignatz and Barbara Grigutowicz.
Mr. Grigg served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. He graduated from Thompson High School in the Class of 1939. For 36 years, he worked for the Elgin Courier News in the composing room and was a member of the Typographical Union #16. He was a member of the St. Charles V.F.W. #5036 and a life member of the downtown St. Patrick Church. He enjoyed golf and fishing.
Mr. Grigg is survived by a niece, Barbara (Michael) Hisey and their sons, Brandon, Evan and Drew of Adrian, Oklahoma; a nephew, Andres (Judi) Gregory and their daughters, Lauren, Kelsey and Jana of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his loving companion of 37 years, Rose Marie Walsh of St. Charles and daughter, Patricia L. (Curtis) Kenyon of Batavia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Agnes Grigutowicz; two brothers, John and Peter Grigutowicz.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 PM Tuesday, January 29, 2002 at the Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third Street, St. Charles, where a prayer service will be held at 7 PM.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at St. Patrick Church, 408 Cedar Street, St. Charles, with Fr. Carl E. Beekman, celebrant. Burial will be in Union cemetery, St. Charles.

Herbert E. Jacobsen, Jr.
Herbert E. Jacobsen, Jr., 80, of Elgin died Friday, January 25, 2002 in his home.
He was born March 7, 1921 in Downers Grove, IL and was the son of Herbert E. and Anna Jacobsen, Sr.
He had been a resident of Elgin most of his life and had been employed by Elgin Water Softner for 13 years and owned and operated Herb's Radio and TV Service for 20 years and then worked for Illinois Hydralic Construction Co. for eight years and then Indian Lakes Resort for four years and then Armark Services before retiring. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Elgin and a member and Past Governor of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #799 of Elgin.
Surviving are his wife, Jean; three sons, Herbert Jacobsen III of Shreveport, Louisiana, William Jacobsen of Elgin and David (Teri) Jacobsen of Elgin; 12 grandchildren; a step daughter, Shannon (Paul) McDermott of Lemont, IL; four step sons, Stephen (Alida) Healy of Cincinnati, Ohio, Michael (Brooke) Healy of Charlotte, North Carolina, Patrick (Tina) Healy of Streamwood, IL and Shawn (Lisa) Healy of Henderson, Colorado; two sisters, Lilian Gilmore of Sugar Grove, IL and Ruth Behrens of South Elgin; and three brothers, Leonard (LaVilla) Jacobsen of Elgin, Edward Jacobsen of Elgin and Arnold (Mina) Jacobsen of Tacoma, Washington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dolores; a son, Michael Jacobsen; and five brothers.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 12 Noon in the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin with Rev. Scott Chinburg officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park.
Visitation will be in the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 to 9 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Provena St. Joseph Hospice.

John McNutt, Sr.
John McNutt, Sr., 71, of Elgin died Sunday, January 27, 2002 in his home.
He was born September 25, 1930 in Elgin and was the son of Harry and Lucille McNutt.
He had been a resident of Elgin all his life and had been employed by Illinois Hydraulic for 34 years before retiring. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the Marines. He was a member of the Elgin Evangelical Free Church.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce; five daughters, Debbie (Mark) Dickerson of Elgin, Denise McNutt of Elgin, Robin (Chuck) Heinrich of Walworth, Wisconsin, Lori (Toby) Zwingelberg of Elgin and Jodi (Dave) Moxness of Elgin; a son, John (Donna) McNutt, Jr of Elgin; 19 grandchildren, Andrea (Kevin) Holst, Michelle, Stephanie, Melanie and Michael Dickerson, Megan, Josie and Jedidiah Heinrich, Amy, Kari, Jodi and Jimmy Zwingelberg, Emily, Jared, Adam and Nathan Moxness, and John, Jacob and Katie McNutt; a great grandson, Enan Holst; and a sister, Marge (William) Wewetzer of Elgin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lois Cooper; and two brothers, Harry and David McNutt.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 1 PM in the Elgin Evangelical Free Church, 1900 Big Timber Rd, Elgin with Rev. Terry Ronan officiating. Burial will be in River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee.
Visitation will be in the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin on Monday from 4 to 9 PM and then at the church on Tuesday from 12 Noon until time of Services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Elgin Evangelical Free Church.

Feliciano "Felix" Rafael
Feliciano "Felix" Rafael, 86. of Glendale Heights, IL, formerly of Elgin died Saturday, January 26, 2002 in Glen Oaks. Hospital in Glendale Heights.
He was born January 24, 1916 in the Philippines.
A resident of Elgin for many years and had been employed by the Anvil Club before retiring. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife, Lilia; a daughter, Laura (Vicente) Sarangaya of Elgin; four sons, Felicito (Cristina) Rafael of San Diego, California, Jon Rafael of Las Vegas, Nevada, Ambrocio (Cecilia) Rafael and Florante (Emma) Rafael both of Elgin; 17 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and his son-in-law, Pete Olanda of Elgin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Arsenia in 1997; and a daughter, Araceli Olanda.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 AM in the Laird Funeral Home and then to St. Thomas More Catholic Church for Mass at 10 AM. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.
Visitation will be in the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin on Monday from 4 to 9 PM.

Mary Devine
Mary Devine, 89, of Elgin passed away Saturday, January 25, 2003 at her home. She was born June 29, 1913 in Clare, IL the daughter of James and Olive Anderson Dooley. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Elgin.
Survivors include her husband, John, one son, John (Lane) of California, three grandchildren, Heather (George) Green of Libertyville, Ryan Devine of Arizona and Deana (Jon) Livingston of California, one great granddaughter, Breena Livingston of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
Private family services were held at Madison Funeral Home in Elgin. Burial in Clare, IL. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Fox Valley Cremations, 741-1128.

Lloyd W. Gage
Lloyd W. Gage, 72, of Elgin passed away Saturday January 25, 2003. He was born August 1, 1930, the son of Alvin and Selma (Benjamin) Gage. He retired in 1992 from the Elgin Post Office after 27 years as a letter carrier. He enjoyed spending time with his family and taking his grandchildren to baseball games in St. Louis. He was a collector of jukeboxes, old radios and pinball machines.
Survivors include his wife Bonnie (Benson) whom he married May 19, 1955; two daughters, Paula (Dave) Cohrs of Arizona and Cathy (Karl) Krull of Elgin; grandchildren, Matthew (Katherine) Cohrs of Arizona, Amy Cohrs of Hoffman Estates, Tim Cohrs of Arizona, Daniel and Steve Krull of Elgin; Great-grandson Ethan Cohrs of Arizona; two brothers, Robert Gage of Granite City, IL and Dan (Linda) Boles of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.
Funeral will be held Thursday, January 30, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St. Elgin with Rev. Thomas Niermann officiating. Burial will be private in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. Visitation from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Provena Hospice.

Robert P. Mayo
Robert P. Mayo, 86, of Bartlett, IL, with a winter home in Bradenton, FL and a summer retreat in Lac du Flambeau, WI, passed away Saturday, January 25, 2003 in Sherman Hospital. He had the unique experience of being the last director of the United States budget to preside over a budget surplus during the 1969-97 fiscal years. He was born March 15, 1916 in Seattle, WA, where he was salutatorian of Roosevelt High School class of 1933 and solo clarinetist with the University of Washington band, which performed at the Rose Bowl on January 1, 1937.
He graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Washington earning his B.A. in 1937 in Economics and Business, with a triple major in accounting, public finance, and political science, followed by his M.B.A. a year later. He worked as an economist and auditor for the Washington Tax Commission prior to his service in the Office of the Secretary of the Treasury in Washington D.C. (1941-1960), concluding his Treasury career as Assistant to the Secretary in charge of management of the public debt.
Following eight years as vice president of Chicago's Continental Bank in Trust investment and public affairs, he returned to Washington in 1969 as Budget Director in the first Nixon Cabinet. After presiding over a balanced budget in 1969, he helped President Nixon submit balanced budgets for the 1970 and 1971 fiscal years, but the ensuing mild economic recession kept them from happening. It was not until 1998 that the nation achieved the next balanced budget.
He returned to Chicago in mid 1970 as president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, where he continued his active interest and participation in national and civic affairs. Following retirement in 1981 he served as a chairman of the Chicago YMCA Board of Managers and vice president of Chicago's Executive Service Corps, serving hundreds of non-profit institutions in Chicagoland. He was also an official of the Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry and an active director of the boards of many prestigious financial firms in Chicago and New York until the mid-90's. He was a life member of the Commercial Club of Chicago and former senior officer of the Economic Club of Chicago.
With his wife, Marian, of 60 years and often with some of their four children and two grandchildren, he was an ardent tent camper and a true lover of words, puns, jokes and stories. He was an enthusiastic philatalist, genealogist, nature lover, music lover, photographer of wildlife, covered bridges, ocean and mountain vistas and scenic wilderness. He travelled extensively, visiting every county in the United States, well over 100 foreign countries and all seven continents.
Surviving are his wife, Marian, four children, Margaret Mayo of Bartlett, IL, Richard Mayo of Scottsdale, AZ, Carolyn (Gregg) Brown of Putney, VT, and Bob Mayo of Mountainview, CA; two grandchildren, Charles and Jennifer Mayo.
Private graveside services will be held Wednesday in Windridge cemetery, Cary, IL. There will be no visitation. Laird Funeral Home in Elgin is in charge of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to any local YMCA.

Alice S. Underwager
Alice S. Underwager, age 71, of Elgin, IL died Saturday, January 25, 2003 at home in South Elgin. She was born August 7, 1931 in Elgin to Steve and Ruth (nee Beckstrom) Pappas. Along with her husband, she had been the owner and operator of the Western Tap in Elgin.
She is survived by her daughter, Christine (Robert) Moorehead of Libertyville, two sons, Edwin (Kathryn) of St. Charles and Andrew (Melissa) of South Elgin, four grandchildren, Andrew, and Ellie Underwager of South Elgin and Molly Underwager of St. Charles and Robert Moorehead of Libertyville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles E. Underwager, whom she married in 1953 and who preceded her on January 20, 2000 and her sister, Irene Anderson in 1999.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Wait Ross Allanson Elgin Funeral Chapel, with Chaplain Judy Walter of the Visiting Nurses Association Hospice officiating. Burial will be private at Hampshire cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 29 from 5 p.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Alice's name may be made to either the American Diabetes Association or to the Visiting Nurses Association Hospice, 1245 Corporate Blvd. Aurora, IL 60504.

Della L. Wortman
Della L. Wortman, 89, of Clearwater, FL, died Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at Hawthorn Glen Nursing Center in Middleton, OH. Born in Schaumburg, IL, she moved to Clearwater in 1948 from Illinois. She worked as an assembler with the Sperry Company and also with Square D., both in Clearwater. She was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Clearwater.
She is survived by her son, David Wortman and his wife, Kathy of Charlottesville, VA and three grandchildren, Jessica, Sarah and Robert Wortman.

Kenneth L. Ball
Kenneth L. Ball, 74, of Elgin passed away Friday, January 23, 2004 in his home. He was born September 28, 1929 and was the son of Delos and Lucille Ball. He had been a resident of Elgin most of his life. He had been employed by the Elgin National Watch Co. and then Elgin Post Office and was the Post Master of Burlington Post Office before retiring. He was a veteran, having served in the Army. He was a member of American Legion Post 57 of Elgin, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1307 of Elgin and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #799 of Elgin.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandi (Bob) Buerger of Crystal Lake, IL; three grandchildren, Karen (Ryan) Sullivan, Carly Buerger and Eric Buerger; a sister, Betty Orman of Dallas, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Ellen and Charlotte Ball; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Peggy Ball; and three brothers, Robert, Ronald and James Ball.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 27 in the Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin from 4 to 8 PM. Burial will be private in Lakewood Memorial Park. Memorial services will then be held on Thursday, January 29 at 7:30 PM in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 330 Griswold St., Elgin with Rev. David Daubert officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.

Walter S. Claxton
Walter S. Claxton, 69, of Carpentersville died Sunday, January 25, 2004 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Herrin, IL on June 6, 1934, the son of Carlos and Helen (nee Reiger) Claxton. Mr. Claxton was a 42 year resident of the Carpentersville area. He was a former 25 year employee of Eagle Foods in Carpentersville where he worked as Night Manager. Following retirement from Eagle Foods, Mr. Claxton was employed as a custodian at H.D. Jacobs High School in Algonquin. He was a United States Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carol J. (nee Cavinder) Claxton. They married on September 19, 1959; four children, Patricia "Pat" Schultz of Carpentersville, Randy of West Dundee, Jerry of Carpentersville, and Tracey Fukala of Carpentersville; 11 grandchildren, Sarah, Christina, Timmy, Michael, Amanda, Tara, Tory, Tony, Devin, Mitchell and Megan; a great grandson, Jaland; his sister, Marilyn (Bill) Armstrong of Cadiz, KY; his brother-in-law, Earl Cavinder of Elgin. Many nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Jerry and Tommy.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 11 AM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Burial will follow in the Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 9 PM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. 847-426-3436.
