Ethel F. VanMeter
Ethel F. VanMeter, 85 of Elgin passed away Monday, December 29, 2003 in her home. She was born November 3, 1918 in Ottertail County, Minnesota, the daughter of Joseph F. and Laura DeSilva Klinnert.
She had been a resident of the Elgin area for most of her life. She had been employed by the Elgin Case Factory, M.J. Silberts and then Grayline Housewares before retiring.
She was an avid reader and loved to cook and bake.
Surviving are two daughters, Pamela (Bruce) Mcgregor of Huntley, IL, Diana (Mike) Bruening of Elgin; two sons, Jack (Norma) Daum of Henderson, Nevada, LeRoy (Peg) VanMeter of Burlington Twp., IL; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell VanMeter; a son, Richard Daum; two brothers and two sisters.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with Rev. Andrew Plesa officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services. Maryl (Nier) Wells
Memorial services for Maryl (Nier) Wells, 69, will be held Saturday, January 3, at 6 p.m. at the Laird Funeral Home, 310 State St., Elgin.
Maryl was born on October 2, 1934 in Evanston, IL and died Monday, December 22, 2003. She grew up in Chicago and received a B.A. in Elementary Education from Lake Forest College. She taught elementary school for many years in Waukegan, Evanston, and finally Elgin, first at Chicago Junior School, where she also taught music, and then in U-46. She taught first grade at Century Oaks Elementary, Oak Hill, and later Gifford School until she retired in 1994. A patient and loving teacher, Maryl brought a great sense of fun to her work.
She was also a consummate musician who earned her Master's in music from Northwestern University. A lifelong singer, pianist, organist, composer, and arranger, Maryl most recently sang and performed women's barbershop with the Riverside Chorus in Elgin.
Maryl was most active as a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Elgin, where her many activities included: soloist, organist, pianist, First Reader, Second Reader, lecture committee, usher committee, literature distribution, Sunday School teacher, Reading Room librarian and volunteer, music committee, clerk, secretary, and other Board member positions. She also regularly served as chaplain both in a mental health facility and in a Chicago Women's Correctional Center. Always willing to help wherever needed, Maryl gave generously of her time and resources.
After retiring as a teacher, she greatly enjoyed working part-time for the church as Assistant Committee on Publication for the State of Illinois, first in Chicago and later in Wilmette. She also represented her church in the Coalition of Elgin Religious Leaders, specifically helping address issues such as homelessness and hunger. She donated generously to the church as well as to food pantries and other charities. She also volunteered for a time at the Anderson animal shelter in South Elgin and delivered Meals on Wheels for the Salvation Army.
An avid member of ACBL, Maryl became a bronze life master. She was a fun-loving bridge partner to her husband John, and they participated in tournaments around the country.
Maryl was the loving wife of John and the beloved mother of James Nier and Arianne Nier, both of Elgin, and of Daneryl Nier-Weber of Zionsville, IN; beloved mother-in-law of Juergen and loved grandmother to Alex and Nick Weber, also of Zionsville; beloved step-mother and grandmother of Michael, Tina, John-Michael, Dana, and Jessica Wells, of Crystal Lake.
Maryl's loving warmth and bright, giving spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any of the above charities or a charity of one's choice.

Lovina Haun Baird
Lovena Haun Baird, 54, of Belvidere, Illinois died Tuesday afternoon, December 28, 2004 in O.S.F. St. Anthony Hospital due to complications from Syringomyelia. She was born August 29, 1950 in Newport, Rhode Island to Harold and Virginia (Avera) Haun. She moved to Belvidere in 2001, coming here from Elgin, Illinois. Lovina was employed as a vault supervisor fro the former Home Federal Savings & Loan for 15 years, retiring in 1996. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Elgin, Illinois, Alcoholics Anonymous as well as having attained 27 years of sobriety. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, gardening and sewing. She also enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren.
Lovina is survived by three children, Marian Hernandez of Rockford, IL, Megan (John) Narofsky of Streamwood, IL and James Baird of Rockford, IL; seven grandchildren, Anthony and Robert Hernandez, Cheyenne Herrera, Angelica Baird; Nathan, Jared and Matthew Narofsky; her mother, Virginia Haun; a sister, Mary Haun; and three brothers, Welsey, Karl and Harry Haun.
She was preceded in death by her father; and a brother, Harold Haun.

Nancy Block
Nancy Block, 66, of Elgin, passed away Monday, December 27, 2004 in Sycamore. She was born August 8, 1938 and was the daughter of Raymond and Lydia Liepitz Adams.
She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Elgin and a member of the service guild at the church.
Survivors include her husband, Dale, whom she married
June 6, 1959; her three children, Steven of Elgin, William (Margo) of Elgin, and Michael (Donna) of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Brian, Ryan, David, Timothy, Katie, Scott, and Sarah; two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Brianna.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Susanne, in infancy; and one sister, Barbara Jackson.
Memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 2, 2005 at 3:00 PM at Calvary Lutheran Church, 535 N. McLean Blvd., Elgin. Burial will be private at Hampshire cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 2, 2005, from 1:00, until time of service at the church.

Laverne Shirley "Nonny" Heneise
A Memorial service for Laverne Shirley "Nonny" Heneise will be at 1 PM Monday, January 3, 2005 at the Christ the Lord Lutheran Church of Elgin with Rev. Steven Shrock officiating. Mrs. Heneise died Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at Auburn Hills Health & Rehab. She was 77. She was born February 24, 1927 inat Oak Park, IL, the daughter of Reynold L. and Dorothy Rose Lehky. She married
the late Oscar L. Heneise on May 25, 1956 in Elgin, IL. She was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Mrs. Heneise was a resident of the Mountain Home area since 1992 having moved from Elgin, Illinois. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her daughter, Diane White of Mountain Home, Arkansas; a brother, Bruce (Margaret) Lehky of Rochester, New York; three grandchildren, Bethany (Jason) Steger Weaver of Cabot, Arkansas, Justin and Jim Steger of Mountain Home, Arkansas; and two great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oscar; and daughter, Julie. Burial will be at Mt. Emblem, Elmhurst, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Robert W. Johnson
Robert W. Johnson, 88, of Elgin passed away Monday, December 27, 2004 in Sherman West Court. He was born August 5, 1916 in Elgin and was the son of Meta Johnson. He had been a resident of Elgin all his life and had been employed by the Milwaukee Road Railroad for 41 years before retiring. He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #737, the Loyal Order of Moose #799 both of Elgin and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Surviving are two daughters, Sue A. Johnson of Elgin and Sandra L. (Philip) Kenyon of Plato Center; two grandsons, Todd (Christina) Kenyon of Germersheim, Germany and Kyle Kenyon of Hanahan, South Carolina; three great grandchildren, Tamara, Melissa and Lisa; and a great great grandchild, Latisha Kenyon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Violet in 1999.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 1, 2005 at 10 AM in the Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin with Rev. Joseph Snider officiating. Burial will be in River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee. Memorials may be given to the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #737 of Elgin. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9 AM until time of services.
Vera M. Kellermann
Vera M. Kellermann, 94, of Elgin passed away Thursday, December 30, 2004 at Sherman Hospital. She was born October 20, 1910 in Elgin, the daughter of Albert and Minnie Mutchow Rakow.
She was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Elgin and also a member of the Ladies Aid and Fellowship Society at the church.
She is survived by her daughters, Kay (Bruce) Stevenson of Elgin and Marilee (Gerry) Werrbach of South Elgin; four grandchildren, Becky (Bob) Jacobs of AL, Sara (Dan) Sitkie of Wonder Lake, Wendy (Mike) Hartnett of Roselle and Jeff Werrbach of South Elgin; four great grandchildren, Heather and Emily Sitkie and Kelly and Patrick Hartnet.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence in 2002; two brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 3, 2005 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Elgin at 1 PM. Burial will be at Dundee Township cemetery, East. Rev. William Michael McKinstra
Rev. William Michael McKinstra, 73, of Rockford died Tuesday, December 28, 2004 in Provena Cor Mariae Center. Born February 16, 1931, son of Mary (Kelly) and John C. McKinstra. Father McKinstra was a 1949 graduate of Aquin High School, Freeport and 1953 graduate of Notre Dame University. He served two years in the U.S. Army before returning to Notre Dame for advancedstudies. He completed seminary education at St. Meinrad, Indiana and was ordained in May 1962 by Bishop Loras Lane. During his years of ministry he served as assistant at St. James and St. Patrick, Rockford, St. Mary, Woodstock and chaplain at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. Then followed pastoral service at St. Thomas The Apostle, Crystal Lake and St. Anne, Dixon. His last post was at St. Catherine of Siena, West Dundee until his retirement in 2000.
He is survived by his sister, Maureen (Robert) Cramer of Hanover, MA; sister-in-law, Lucille McKinstra of Freeport; eight nieces and nephews; and brother priests of the Rockford Diocese. preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, John.
Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM Tuesday, January 4, 2005 in St. James Catholic Church with the Most Reverend Thomas G. Doran, D.D., J.C.D., Bishop of Rockford, Celebrant. Burial in Calvary cemetery, Freeport. Visitation from 5 to 8 PM Monday at the church with a Christian Wake Service at 7:45 PM. Alice M. Petersdorf, 74, of Elgin passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2004 in Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, IL. She was born August 20, 1930 in Memphis, TN and was the daughter of Henry and Catherine Archer.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Petersdorf of Elgin, to whom she was married
on September 18, 1964' her children, Cathie Solomon of Franklin Park, IL, Stephen Shelton of Germany, Kathryn Petersdorf of Crystal Lake, IL, Steven Petersdorf of Reno, NV, Michael (Sarah) Petersdorf of Plato Center, IL and Linda (Jeff) Walbaum of Denver, CO; her grandchildren, Tammy (Bruce) Culbertson, Christopher Solomon, Scot and Candace Shelton, Alexis, Aaron and Alec Petersdorf; her great grandchildren, Damon, Simon, Caroline Culbertson and Christopher Solomon Jr.; her siblings, Henrietta (Roger) Bell, Juanita Saunders, Kay Bayrd, John (Linda) Archer and Patricia Gray; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Harry Archer; and sister, Dorothy Platzer.

Esther V. Plummer
Esther V. Plummer, 89, of West Dundee passed away Friday, December 31, 2004 in her home. She was born June 28, 1915 in Chicago, the daughter of Emil and Clara (Abraham) Gilson. She was a resident of West Dundee for 52 years.
Survivors include her husband, Delwin Plummer whom she married
on June 8, 1957; daughter, Bonnie (Norb) Piotrowski of Arlington Heights; son, Jim LoPresto of Huntley; grandson, Michael Piotrowski of Chicago; and granddaughter, Ann Marie Piotrowski of Arlington Heights.

Wendell H. Brock
Wendell H. Brock, 80, of Hampshire passed away Sunday, December 30, 2001 at Rosewood Care Center in Elgin.
He was born January 11, 1921 in Elgin, the son of Cecil and Mary (Abernathy) Brock.
He married
Dorothy Kublank Swan on June 29, 1947 in Algonquin. Wendell served in Korea with the U.S. Army and was a member of the American Legion Post 680 and VFW Post 8043. He retired from Borden's Inc. in 1986 and after retirement he worked for the Hampshire Park District. He was a devoted member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampshire and was also an avid gardener, loved to fish and enjoyed the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy; two sons, Robert (Carol) Brock and William Brock both of Hampshire; three grandchildren, Andrew Brock of Naperville, Kimberly Brock of Normal and Douglas Brock of Hampshire.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant son, Herbert; a brother, Walter Brock; and his sister Barbara Kocyan.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, January 3, 2002 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 135 Terwilliger Ave, Hampshire with the Rev. James Hughes officiating. Burial will be in the Hampshire Center cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire and at the church on Thursday prior to Service from 10 to 11 AM.
