Ewald G. "Gus" Ehlers
Ewald G. "Gus" Ehlers, age 83, of St. Charles, passed away, due to heart failure, Tuesday, December 4, 2001 at Provena Mercy Center Hospital, Aurora.
Gus was born November 8, 1918 the son of Fred and Minnie (Hensel) Ehlers in McHenry, IL.
He grew up in McHenry and attended local schools while he helped his father by working on the family farm. On June 11, 1937, Gus graduated from Elgin High School. After graduation he worked as an apprentice pharmacist for four years before working for the Elgin Watch Factory.
In 1941 Gus and Helen Patricia "Pat" Toppel were united in marriage. He began his new life as a civilian married
man, but all that changed three years later when he was drafted into the United States Navy in 1944. Two years later in 1946, he was honorably discharged and returned home to work at Bartlet Implement, a John Deere Store. Ten years later, after leaving Bartlet Implement, Gus formed Elburn Farm Equipment on the south side of Elburn in the spring of 1957. On May 8, 1979, Gus lost his wife Pat. Gus continued to run his business for 28 years and passing on the business to his son Ron, who changed the name to Ehlers Lawn and Recreation. In 1983, Gus married
Shirley Johnson, who made his life complete on August 12 in Las Vegas, NV.
He was a long time member of the Elburn Lions Club, Loyal Order of the Moose, Aurora, Elgin American Legion Post and Man of the Year in 1990 as a member of Elgin Riverside Club. Gus also was an honorary Bartlet Fireman.
He was a "Die Hard" Cubs fan and a long time golfer with a "hole-in-one" to his name. Gus loved to play in the Bartlet Monday Night Mens League until the late 1980's and was still swinging his clubs into his 82nd year. Above all he was a salesman at heart. One of his greatest joys was "horn-swaggling" money for raffle tickets for any number of charities and businesses. He also loved to gamble. Football pools and trips to the Aurora Casino to play the nickel machines made him smile. Gus also loved to travel throughout the U.S. as well as overseas. His greatest love, second only to Shirley, was his card playing. Although he played many card games, pitch was his favorite pastime. Every Thursday afternoon he would get together with his buddies to play pitch. Even when he ran Elburn Farm Equipment, he was often in his office with a local farmer or friend having a "meeting", playing cards and he could not be disturbed. Gus was blessed with a loving family and many friends. He will have a special place in the hearts of his family and all those who were privileged enough to call him friend.
He leaves now his loving wife Shirley; two children Ron (Lynn) Ehlers of Elburn, and Donna (David) Newton of Norman, OK; two step-children, Carol (George) Betsinger of Fall River, WI, and Ken (Catherine) Johnson of Setauket, NY; three grandchildren, Katie and Carrie Ehlers, and Ashley Newton; six step-grandchildren, Laura and Christina Sambrookes, Amy (Josh) McPhail, Meghan Betsinger, Anders and Hannah Johnson; a step-great grandchild, Zoe Betsinger; several nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Jean Ehler of Elgin and a community of friends.
