James L. Ziegler
James L. Ziegler, 73, of Elgin passed away Thursday, November 20, 2003 in Provena St. Joseph Hospital. He was born February 21, 1930 and was the son of Lyle and Zell Ziegler. He was a resident of Elgin all his life and was Vice Chairman of Ziegler's Hardware Stores before retiring. He was a veteran, having served in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elgin.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis; one daughter, Lori (John) Cabell of Leadville, Colorado; one son, David (Lydia) Ziegler of Elgin; three grandchildren, Adam and Leah Ziegler, Jean Cabell; one brother, Gregg (JoAnn) Ziegler of Barrington, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, December 7, 2003 at 4:30 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Larry Pickens officiating. Burial will be private. There will be no visitation. Laird Funeral Home in Elgin is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Elgin Historical Society, 360 Park St., Elgin, IL 60120 or to the First United Methodist Church, 216 E. Highland Ave., Elgin, IL 60120.
Gene A. Dwyer
Our beloved husband and father, Gene A. Dwyer, born November 21, 1919, died December 4, 2004. The son of Frank and Nellie (Harrison) Dwyer, he was a lifelong resident of Elgin. A man of many talents, Gene was an accomplished musician who performed with some of the most famous bands of the late 1930's and early 1940's. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific Theater.
He married
Jane Elizabeth Martin of Chicago on September 20, 1947. During their 57 years of marriage they lovingly raised seven children, Jane (Bryant) Liggett, Gene (Becky) Dwyer, Marianne (Terry) Jeffrey, Harry (Sue) Dwyer, Eileen Dwyer, Richard (Rhonda) Dwyer and Andrea (Scott) Pospisil. He was the proud grandfather of 23 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Following his retirement in 1997, Gene and Jane have resided most of the year at their family home in Magnolia Springs, AL.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at St. James Episcopal Church, 516 Washington St., West Dundee at 5:30 p.m. Laird Funeral Home, Elgin is in charge of arrangements.
Diana Margaret Engh
Diana Margaret Engh, age 63, passed away peacefully in her sleep, on Monday, November 15, 2004. She was born on June 5, 1941 in Chicago, IL.
Diana was one of the most unselfish people. Always willing to help anyone in any situation and always giving of herself.
She is survived by two sons, Randy (Sabrina) Engh of Indiana and Joseph Llamas of Lake in the Hills, IL; two daughters, Maria (Richard Brand) Ortiz of Elgin and Stacy (Faron) Thurber of Elgin; nine grandchildren, Nathan (Dawn) Thurber, Nicholas Thurber, Brenton Thurber, Ashley Thurber, Jacob Thurber, Melissa (Daniel) Caban, Ryan Ortiz, Emmanuel Ortiz, Guadalupe Ortiz; and five great-grandchildren, Jason, Steven, Jessica and Robert J. Llamas, and Stephanie Caban; her mother, Ruth Skeets; one sister, Beverly (Marty) Kunz of Marengo, IL; one brother, Herbert Engh of Salem, IL; daughter-in-law, Karen Engh; and her niece and nephew, Mary Ann and Curtis Pennington of Nevada. Services were held privately.
Tamara Smith
Tamara Smith, 50, of Kankakee, IL, formerly Elgin, passed away November 23, 2004. She was born on November 26, 1953 in Kankakee, IL and was the daughter of Fred and Martha (Karupka) Mitzel. She was a graduate of Larkin High School in 1972.
She is survived by three children, Ian, Ashley and Emily Smith all of Kankakee, IL; a granddaughter; her mother and step father, Martha (Franklin) Mitzel-Hupe of St. Charles, IL; her brother, Michael (Jana) Mitzel of West Brooklyn, IL; her step sisters, Jenny, Shauna and Sheila Hupe; a step brother, David Hupe; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father; and a step brother, Daniel H. Hupe.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 27, 2004 in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and burial was in Prairie cemetery, St. Charles, IL. Memorials may be made to the family for a future education fund for her children.
D. Ray Wilson
D. Ray Wilson, 77, passed away December 2, 2003 at the University of Chicago Hospital, Chicago. He was born on January 16, 1926 in Riverdale, California and was the son of Elmer and Hannah Wilson.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice; daughters, Jeri Salzmann, Vicky (James) Harrington, Margaret (Douglas) Phares; a son-in-law, Larry Kamper; grandchildren, Elizabeth Kamper, Nicholas Salzmann, Michelle Kamper, Robert Harrington, Connor Phares, Matthew Harrington, Morgan Phares, and Erin Phares; brothers, William Wilson, Richard Wilson, and Charles Wilson; and sisters Barbara Crombie, Alice Wylie, Shirley Wilson, and Diane Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant brother, Elmer; his brother, John Wilson; and his daughter, Juli Kamper.
Wilson was a Navy veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Air Force after the war. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.
He spent most of his life in some aspect of journalism, including more than 35 years as editor and publisher of weekly and daily newspapers. He retired as editor and publisher of the Daily Courier News, Elgin, IL and the Daily Journal, Wheaton, IL after 21 years of service. He served as a vice president of Copley Press, Inc. and as a member of the Copley Newspaper Senior Management Board. After his retirement, he formed Crossroads Communications, where he continued to write and publish books. A graduate of Northern Illinois University, he is the author of a dozen books, including historical tour guides and books of history.
In education, Wilson has served as a trustee of Judson College, Elgin since 1970; a member of the Board of Governors, State Colleges and Universities; director Elgin Community College Foundation; public member, Publications Board, Northern Illinois University; director and chairman of the board, Christian College of Southern Africa, Harae, Zimbabwe; trustee, Elgin Academy; national advisory board, Education Assistance, Ltd; chairman, national advisory Board, Illinois Benedictine College Lincoln Train Project. He was a founder of the Home of Guiding Hands in San Diego, California. He is the recipient of the Golden Eagle Award and an honorary doctorate from Judson College.
In Illinois, Wilson has served as director, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI); director, LSSI Alcohol/Drug Dependence Program; director, Cornerstone Foundation; state commander, Disabled American Veterans; member, Illinois Veterans Advisory Commission; president, Council on American Military Past. Wilson was founder and served as chairman of the board of VIP Council of Illinois, a program for senior citizens that had more than 50,000 members in Northern Illinois. Illinois Lieutenant Governor Neil Hartigan gave credit to Wilson for helping to create the first State Department for the Aging in the United States. Today, this is the Illinois Senior Citizen, Human Resources and Veterans Department.
In service to the community, he has served as board member, campaign chairman, Elgin Area United Way; trustee, Sherman Hospital; trustee, Sherman Health Systems; director, 1st National Bank of Elgin; president, Two Rivers Council; Boy Scouts of America; founder chairman of the board, DuPage Heritage Gallery; chairman, Elgin Economic Development Commission; chairman, Elgin Sesquicentennial Commission; board member, Elgin Symphony; president, Elgin Sister Cities; director, Junior Achievement; director, Wheaton Eye Foundation. He was the founder of Elgin's Annual Prayer Breakfast program. Among his many civic awards is the Silver Beaver Award presented by the Boy Scouts of America.
Visitation will be at Laird Funeral Home, 310 State St., Elgin on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at Herrick Chapel at Judson College, Elgin, on Saturday, December 6, at 10:00 a.m.

Carole Benson Anderson
Carole Benson Anderson, 71, of Oro Valley, AZ, formerly of Burlington and Elgin, IL, a Principal and Teacher in Burlington Central School District 301 left us on this Wednesday morning, December 4, 2002 after losing her battle with cancer.
Carole was a talented artist with a passion for watercolors and a skilled photographer. She was an active member of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild. She loved her beautiful garden and the Arizona mountain views. She was also a Board member of the Friends of the Oro Valley Public Library and was recently made a member of the Scarlet O'Hara's Chapter of the Red Hat Society. Her love of animals she cared for throughout her life, most recently Annie, (her beloved dog) was one more example of the special person she was. She is survived by her husband, Dennis Mobeck; her children, Leslie (Tom) Jurgensen, Jayne (David) Pritchard and Tim (Katherine Morris) Anderson; grandchildren, Katy Jurgensen, Kolben Pritchard and a new granddaughter due in March 2003; two brothers, Fred (Judy) Benson and David (Midge) Benson, both of Sycamore, IL; and a sister, Rita (David) Covey.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Conrad and Milla (Jensen) Benson; and a sister, Virginia Stowe.
Carole's gentle spirit, and her kind and giving soul, will be missed by her family, neighbors and her many friends.

Sylvia E. Bauman
Sylvia E. Bauman, age 87, of King, WI, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, where she was a resident. She was born on May 5, 1915 in Aurora, Illinois, a daughter of the late Alfred and Aldea (Kingsley) Crawford.
She married
Harold J. Bauman on October 4, 1947 in Aurora, Illinois. He preceded her in death on April 6, 1996. Sylvia dearly loved her family and grandchildren. She was a woman of faith and was very active in religious activities. Sylvia was also an avid bingo player.
Survivors include two sons, William John (Linda) Bauman of St. Charles, IL and Joseph (Marilyn) Bauman of Elgin, IL, two daughters, Judith (Fred Patterson) Bauman of Van Buren, AR and Joyce (Gerardo) Gudino of South Elgin, Illinois, eight grandchildren, Lt. Ryan Bauman, USMC of Oceanside, CA, Heather Gudino of South Elgin, IL, Rebecca Bauman of Elgin, IL, Kathryn Bauman of Elgin, IL, Stephanie Gudino of South Elgin, IL, Sarah Patterson of Fremont, MI, Elizabeth Patterson of Fremont, MI and Fred Patterson III of Fremont, MI, and one step-brother, Alfred Crawford.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 9, at 12 p.m. (noon) at Wisconsin Veterans Home - Ainsworth Hall Chapel in King, WI, with Father Paul Vanden Hogen and Deacon Don Lobdell officiating. Friend may call on Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the Ainsworth Hall Chapel. Interment will be held at St. Paul's Catholic cemetery, Township of Oasis, Waushara County, Wisconsin.
Stacey Colley
Stacey Colley, infant daughter of Kevin Colley and Stacey Robinson, died on Thursday, November 28 at Loyola University Hospital.
She is survived by her parents, her twin brother Kevin Colley, paternal grandparents Kate Watkins of Elgin and Frank Colley of Oklahoma, and maternal grandparents Robin Span of Elgin and Warren Robinson of Ohio.
Funeral services will be Monday, December 9, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Wait Ross Allanson Elgin Chapel. Elder Leonard Spates will officiate. Interment will be at Bluff City cemetery.
Josephine B. Domenico
Josephine B. Domenico, 86, of Mount Prospect, formerly of East Dundee, died Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at her home. She was born in Chicago on January 21, 1916, the daughter of Charles & Mary (nee Librado) Fonte. Josephine was raised in Dundee and always considered Dundee her home. She was a 40 year resident of Mount Prospect.
She is survived by three children: Mary Lou (Ronald) Lada of Orlando, FL, Frank (Charlene) Domenico of Lockport, IL and Deborah (Jeffrey) Hill of Rolling Meadows, eleven grandchildren & eleven great grandchildren, three sisters: Mollie Ianno of Fountain Valley, CA, Della Chuffo of East Dundee and Dorothy Sjurset of Elgin, one brother: Ralph Fonte of Green Valley, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank in 1983, three brothers: Merique "Mickey" Fonte, George Fonte and James Fonte.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 1-6 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Burial will be private in the Dundee Twp. East cemetery, East Dundee.
Lee W. Nelson
Lee Wayne Nelson, 48, of South Beloit, IL departed this life after a short fight with cancer at 11:50 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2002 in OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. He was born on December 29, 1953 in Evanston, IL the son of Richard and Nancy Nieman Nelson. He worked with pride as a security guard at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center for the last ten years. He married
Susan Roland on January 11, 1992 in Rockford.
Lee is survived by his wife, Susan, parents Richard and Nancy Nelson of Elgin, IL, sister Aileen Nelson of Elgin, maternal grandmother Frances Nieman of Niles, two maternal aunts, Carole Langlo, of Wauconda, and Mrs. Hugh (Avis) McDonald of Skokie, and one paternal uncle, Dr. Hugh McDonald. Predeceased by three grandparents and a paternal aunt. Lee enjoyed computer games, cooking shows, Beatles music and a good joke.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2002 in Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd. Rockford, IL, with Rev. William Wentink, Chaplain of OSF St. Anthony Medical Center to officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 6, 2002 in the funeral home. Bertha Sinclair
Bertha Sinclair, 97, of Elgin passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2002 in Rosewood Care Center in Elgin.
She was born September 8, 1905 in Chicago and was the daughter of Francis and Anne Schraag.
She had been a resident of Elgin for the past five years.
Surviving are a daughter, Letitia (Dennis) Dilley of Elgin; two sons, John Sinclair of Evanston, IL and Gerald (Rosemary) Sinclair of New Mexico; nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John "Jack" Sinclair; and four sisters.
Funeral Mass will be held Monday at 11:30 AM in St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1535 W. Highland Ave, Elgin. Burial will be in Sacred Heart cemetery, Northbrook.
Visitation will be in the Laird Funeral Home, 310 State St, Elgin on Sunday from 3 to 8 PM and then on Monday at the church from 11 AM until time of Services.
