Bertha Shine
Bertha Shine, 90, of Elgin, passed away Sunday, December 21, 2003 in Sherman West Court, Elgin. She was born June 8, 1913 in Viola Twp., IL and was the daughter of Andrew and Hattie (Wing) Anderson. Bertha graduated from Elgin High School in 1930. She had worked at D.C. Cook Publishing in Elgin for many years prior to her retirement.
She was a member of the Grace Methodist Church of Elgin since March 6, 1942.
Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn (Earl) Lamberton of Chaska, MN; her daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Shine of McHenry, IL; five grandchildren, Tim (Lisa) Shine, Carolyn (Bill) Crosby, Katie (Pete Pinto) Shine, Michael (Becky) and Mark McRoberts; six great-grandchildren, Emma Kay, Julia, and Sarah Shine, Joshua Crosby, Rayanna and Kevin McRoberts; and many devoted nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank J. Shine, whom she married
on December 4, 1933; her son, Dennis Frank Shine in 2001; two brothers, Harold and Orren Anderson; three sisters, Hazel Sohn, and two in infancy.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will be in River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the ALS Foundation (Lou Gehrigs Disease), IL Chapter-Les Turner for ALS Foundation, 8142 N. Lawndale Ave., Skokie, IL 60076.
Vera L. Jeannotte
Vera L. Jeannotte, age 86, of Elgin, died Friday, January 13, 2006 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. She was born in Reedsburg, WI, the daughter of Clifford and Lilvie Stombaugh. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia (Frank) Almaguer and Karen Ponce, both of Elgin; a sister, Lucille Bricki of Michigan; four grandchildren, Trina Haugh, Rene Almaguer, Sondra Krahel and Diana Mize; 11 great-grandchildren, Michael Amanda, Megan, Matthew, Blair, Joshua, Kevin, Trevor, Arreal, Amber and Nico to whom she was dedicated and devoted.
Visitation will be from 1:00 PM Tuesday, January 17 until the time of service at 3:00 PM at Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel, Elgin.
Burial will be private.
James W. Jordan
James W. Jordan of Bradenton, FL, formerly of Elgin, died in his home on January 9, 2006. He was 81.
Jim was born in Massachusetts and graduated from Boston University. He was an Air Force veteran of WWII. He lived in Algonquin and Elgin while working as a sales representative for General Electric and Black & Decker. Jim retired to Florida in 1992, where he continued to work in sale for JMS, Inc.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Audrey; and his brother, Charles.
He is survived by his wife, Halaine; daughter, Andrea Schmidlin, Elgin; son, Keith, Forestville, CA; sister, Jacqueline Shine, Summit, NJ; stepsons, Bill Fronk, S. Elgin and Chris Fronk, Western springs; nieces; nephews; and grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate Jim's life will be held at the Congregational Church of Algonquin on Sunday, January 22 at 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 Northwest Ninth Avenue, Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136 or the Congregational Church of Algonquin.
Vernell L. "Jim" Richardson
Vernell L. "Jim" Richardson, 86, of Virgil died Saturday, January 14, 2006 at his home. He was born May 20, 1919 in Hampshire. He was the son of Fred and Edith (Nee Brunschon) Richardson. Jim was a dairy farmer for most of his life and served as Kane County Farm Bureau Director of Dairy Herd Improvement. He was a 40 year member of the American Milk Producers Service, Inc, and a long time 4-H Leader in Kane County. Jim was also a member of the Saint Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church of Pingree Grove.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma, whom he married
on February 27, 1944 in the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Dundee. A daughter, Sandra Fischer of Elgin; a son, Steven (Jean) Richardson of Maple Park; three grandchildren, Matthew (Tyler) Richardson of Batavia, Mary (Kurt) Long of Sycamore and Julie Richardson of Maple Park; a step granddaughter, Jonetta Sherrill; two great granddaughters, Kennedy and Kaya Richardson. Other survivors include his brother, Frederick (Elaine) Richardson of South Elgin; his sisters, Doris Kahle of Tupelo, OK and Velma (LaVerne) Holtz of Hampshire; a sister-in-law, Elmina Richardson of Elgin; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald; and his sister, Della.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 AM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Burial will follow in the River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 8 PM in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church of Pingree Grove.
Louis Eugene Vandenbergh
Louis Eugene Vandenbergh, age 52, of Hampshire, IL, died on Friday, January 13, 2006 at his home. Gene was born on June 8, 1953 in Pana, IL, the son of Louis and Lucille (nee Ashcraft) Vandenbergh.
Louis attended Sacred Heart School, Pana High School, and was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University. He was a 25 year employee of Kuriyama of America Inc. in Schaumburg, IL. Gene was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Hampshire. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and loved to garden. Throughout his illness, Gene kept his sense of humor and never complained.
Gene is survived by his wife of 22 years, Maryanne (nee O'Brien) whom he married
on June 18, 1983; two sons, Phillip (Jeni) of Chesterton, IN, Bradley of Hampshire; his mother, Lucille Rhodes; his sisters, Dorothy Rhodes, Helen Waddington, Phyllis (Jerry) Blackwell, all of Pana, Patricia (Dwight) Yoshioka of Glenview, and Carol (Larry) Williams of Granger, IN. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Family and friends will meet for Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 10:30 AM at the St. Charles Borromeo Church in Hampshire. The Rev. Joseph Nicolosi, Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in the St. Charles Borromeo cemetery, Hampshire.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 16, 2006 from 3-9 PM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. A Memorial Mass will be held in Pana, IL at the St. Patrick Catholic Church at a later date.

Ronald L. Heller
Ronald L. Heller, 39, of Greely, CO, formerly of Carpentersville, died January 11 at his home. He was born in Elgin February 20, 1963 to LeRoy and Bernadette Spiczka. He was a 1981 graduate of Dundee High School where he wrestled and played football. Ron was a singer for the Dundee High School Madrigals. He was also a member of the Elgin Moose. He earned an associate degree as a surgical assistant in Colorado.
He is survived by one son, Anthony Heller of Loveland, CO, five brothers and sisters: Ken Poulos of West Dundee, Gail (Edward) Muren of Huntley, Barbara (Bill) Stephenson of Des Plaines, Bill (Kris) Heller of Chicago, Ken Heller of Chicago. His special friend Shari Broderick of Greely, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two nephews and one great nephew.
Funeral Services will be on Saturday, January 18, at 3 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Burial will be private. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services. Memorials may be made to the family.
Maureen Una (Duquette) Metcalf
Maureen Una (Duquette) Metcalf passed away Monday, January 9, 2003 at her home.
She was born in Fall River, MA on November 7, 1935, the eldest of four children from the union of Arthur Duquette and Cora Marcoux.
Maureen is survived by her two brothers, Michael and Theodore Duquette; and her only sister, Connie (Duquette) East. Former wife of Edgar Lorin Metcalf, Maureen has three children, Lauren Dianne Zellar, Christopher Edgar Metcalf and Leslie Gail Metcalf and was a loving grandmother to Michael Christopher Metcalf.
Maureen graduated from East Hartford High School in 1953 and went on to a Bachelor's Degree in 1960 from the University of Connecticut. From there she then completed a Masters Degree in Education at New York State University in 1974. Finally, her love to be learning culminated in another Masters Degree in Business Administration from the National College of Education (Lombard) in 1989. Her educational pursuits lead her to a 24 year career culminating as the Director of Early Childhood Education at the Dundee Township Park District. Maureen was well known through-out the community as a leader truly concerned about the welfare of our children. She will be sorely missed.
Memorial Services will be held for Maureen Una Metcalf at the Miller Funeral Home, 504 W. Main Street, West Dundee, IL, Saturday, January 18, 2003 from 6 to 8 PM for those wishing to pay their respects.

Edward Herman Engel
Edward Herman Engel, newborn son of Tandall and Shawna G. Engel, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004 in Memphis, TN.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated January 24th at the Stritch Chapel on the Campus of Christian Brothers University in Memphis with burial in Calvary cemetery.
In addition to his parents, he leaves a sister, Maxine B. Engel of Memphis; his grandparents, Bonnie and Richard Engel of Hampshire, IL and Sharon and Edward Gastright of Cold Spring, KY; his paternal great grandfather, Donald Engel of Hampshire, IL and his maternal great grandfather, Raymond Saner of Bellevue, KY.

Dorothie Dixon Morgan Hastings
Dorothie Dixon Morgan Hastings, 87, of Elgin, formerly of Carpentersville, died on Monday, January 12, 2004 at the Apostolic Christian Resthaven in Elgin.
She was born on January 18, 1916 in Corth County, Missouri. She was the daughter of William and Mabel (nee Nash) Morgan.
For many years, Mrs. Hastings and her late husband, Marvin O., were co-owners and co-operators of Floyds Restaurant in Carpentersville. She was a member of the Dundee Lioness Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Jacquelyn (John) Coleman of Water Island, St. Thomas, The Virgin Islands; her granddaughters, Tamara Arthur of New Hampshire, Elizabeth (Keith) Stewart of Germany and Jennifer of Colorado; her great grandchildren, Dylan Arthur and Tara Elizabeth Stewart.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 60 years, Marvin O., whom she married
November 26, 1935. He died on May 2, 1996; and a brother, Joseph Morgan.
Funeral Services will be on Saturday at 1:30 PM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Interment will follow in the Dundee Township cemetery, East Dundee.
Visitation will be on Saturday from 12:30 PM until time of services.

Kenneth Johnson, Jr.
Kenneth Johnson, Jr., of Elgin, passed away January 13, 2004 in Sherman Hospital, Elgin. He was born in New York City, New York and was the son of Dr. Kenneth and Elsie Johnson Sr. Kenneth graduated from Lawrenceville Prep School in New Jersey, and Cornell University. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, 75th Infantry, Medic, Battle of the Bulge, during W.W.II, and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Ken was the owner-broker of Ken Johnson Real Estate offices in Elgin and Dundee since 1968.
He was President of the Greater Elgin Area Association of Realtors from 1986-87.
Survivors include his wife, Polly Clendening Johnson; three children, Kerri (Jeffrey) Bock of Elgin, Kimberly (Robin) Moseley of Elgin, Pamela L. Johnson of Elgin; five grandchildren, Brittany Bock, Nicole, Rebecca, Benjamin, and Sally Moseley; his sister, Diana Oviatt of SC; many dearly loved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Elizabeth Johnson and Patricia Potter.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with Rev. Robert Stewart officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:30 p.m. until the time of serivces in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer or a charity of one's choice.
Roy W. Oberg
Roy W. Oberg, age 86, of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva. He was born March 27, 1917 in Chicago, IL, the son of William and Karen (nee Youngberg) Oberg.
He attended the First Baptist Church in Geneva, was an active volunteer at the Michealsen Healthcare Center in Batavia, and was a member of the Chicago Graphic Arts Union. He was an avid walker, often walking from the Holmstad Retirement Community to the Batavia downtown.
Roy is survived by his son, James (Mari Ann) Oberg of Elgin, IL; two grandchildren, Erik (Dana) Oberg and Kaari Oberg; two great-grandchildren, Grace and James Oberg; a twin sister, Ruth Johnson; three stepchildren, Paul (Carol) Brott, Tom (Karen) Brott, and Carol Jean Anderson; and seven grandchildren, Andrew (Kelly), Matthew, Peter, Emily, David, Brian, and Edward.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis; his second wife, Marion; a brother, Stan; and a sister, Esther.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 19, 2004 at the Ahlstrand Chapel in the Holmstad Retirement Community, 700 West Fabyan Parkway in Batavia. Interment will be private.
