Jonathan B. Hayes
Jonathan B. Hayes, 78, of Elgin passed away February 22, 2004. He was born on February 8, 1926 in Chicago, IL. Jonathan graduated from Lyons Township High School in 1944. He was a Veteran and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 101st Airborne Division during W.W.II., receiving the Purple Heart. Jonathan graduated from NIU Masters Educational Administration. He served 38 years in the Elgin School District U-46 as a Teacher/Principal at Garfield, Wayne, and McKinley Schools.
He was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer of Elgin for 50 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew and the Vestry, a past Exalted Ruler of the Elgin Elks BPOE #1307, a Life Member of John Ericsson Republican League of IL, a Delegate and Board of Directors, Elgin United Civic Association, a Life Member of the V.F.W. #1307, a member of the American Legion Post #57, the Elgin Riverside Club, and the Elgin Eagle's Club #1047.
Survivors include his wife, Phoebe; two daughters, Patricia (James) Lackman of Batavia, IL, Julia (Michael) Kmieciak of Bristol, RI; two stepchildren, Rani Horton of Loves Park, IL, Eric Humbracht of Elgin, IL; three grandchildren, Margaret Lackman, Justin and Jonathan Kmieciak; three sisters, Margaret Taylor, Carol Pangborn, and Libby Hayes; two brothers, Richard and James Hayes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Joann Hayes; his granddaughter, Ellie Hayes Lackman.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of the Redeemer, Elgin. Burial will be in Bronswood cemetery, Hinsdale, IL. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-8:00 p.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with the Elk's Memorial service at 7:30 p.m. and on Friday in the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Redeemer, or Mutual Ground Woman's Shelter, Aurora, IL.
Virgie Reedy
Virgie Reedy, 78, of Hampshire, formerly of Chicago, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2004 in Mesa, Arizona.
She was born August 27, 1925 to Rafie and Citie (Brown) Dickens in Mount Cool, West Virginia. Virgie married
Charles E. Reedy in 1956 and they were residents of West Virginia and Chicago. Mrs. Reedy moved to Hampshire with her daughter Robin in 1995.
Mrs. Reedy was a former employee of Resol, Inc. of Villa Park. She had been attending the Fox Valley Baptist Church in Dundee. Virgie enjoyed cross-stitching, outings at the movies, and dining out.
Surviving are her six children, Murla Jo (Roger) Henderson of Hampshire, Alma Milam of Arlington Heights, Charles Reedy, Jr. of Cary, Dianne (Bruce) Pomponio of Byron, Reita (E.J.) Schultz of Mundelein, and Rowena (Greg) Morson of Arlington, TX; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; her daughter, Robin on September 8, 2002; two sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire with Pastor Phil Zilinski of Fox Valley Baptist Church officiating. Burial wil be in the Hampshire Center cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be directed to her family.
Thaddeus Walter Tecza
Thaddeus Walter Tecza, 60, of Elgin passed away February 19, 2004. He was born on February 9, 1944 in Chicago, IL and was the son of Adam and Stella (Niemiec) Tecza.
Ted was a resident of Elgin for eight years, and the Fox Valley area for 30 years. He achieved his Bachelors in Landscape Architecture from the University of Illinois, Valedictorian, in 1967. Ted was the President/Owner of Tecza Environmental Group. His passions were foremost his family, poetry, gardening, and golf.
He was a member of the Illinois Landscape Contractor's Association.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn (Small) Tecza of Elgin; his children, Adam (Michelle), Beth, and Aaron Tecza; his stepchildren, Caitlyn and Taylor Rohlfing, Kenya Carver, and Paul Nastali; his grandchildren, Megan, Ashley, Matthew, Joshua, Kylie, and Trey.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the Unitarian Universalist Church on Highland Ave. in Elgin. Burial will be private in the Prairie cemetery, St. Charles, IL. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-8:00 p.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin.
Albadean Walston
Albadean Walston, 83, of Elgin passed away Monday, February 23, 2004 at Heritage Manor, Elgin. She was born December 15, 1920 in Calvert City, Kentucky, the daughter of Roy and Dona Coursey.
Surviving are two daughters, Wanda Gurke and Karen (Gary) Pfirman of Arizona; two sons, James (Roxanne) Walston of South Elgin, IL and Phillip (Molly) Walston of Arizona.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, W.A. Walston.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 27, 2004 at River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee. Visitation will be held on Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heritage Manor or Vitas Hospice.
Sharon Witte
Sharon Witte, 52, of Elgin passed away Thursday, February 19, 2004 at Sherman West Court, Elgin. She was born May 11, 1951 in Elgin, the daughter of Wesley and Elizabeth Bremmer Witte. She had been a resident of Elgin all of her life. She was employed by Provena St. Joseph Hospital as a Nurse's Aid and in the Dietary Department.
She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Elgin.
Surviving are several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Danny L. Witte.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 26 at 7:00 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with Rev. Thomas O'Connor officiating. Burial will be private in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Visitation will be held Thursday frm 4:00 p.m. until the time of services in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Elgin.
Jeffrey L. Carlson
Funeral services for Jeffrey L. Carlson, 56, of Minonk, IL will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at the Froelich Memorial Home in Minonk with the Rev. Connie Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Dana cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Memorial Home. Memorials may be directed to a charity of a donor's choice.
Mr. Carlson passed away at 1:42 P.M. Saturday, February 9, 2002 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington. He was born on May 27, 1945 in Elgin, IL, the son of Vincent and Laurreta Fitzsimmons Carlson. He married
Diane "Willi" Willhelm on April 26, 1971 in Elgin.
She survives along with one daughter, Katy, of Minonk and Kirby of Peoria; one sister, Karen "Roger" Siegmeir of Eagle River, WI; two brothers, Terry (Nancy) Carlson of Phoenix, AZ and Robert Carlson of Elgin.
His parents preceded him in death.
He graduated from Elgin School District in 1963 and had been employed by Teleweld, Inc. in Streator for 20 years until 1994. He served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne. As a husband, a parent, a son, a brother and a friend, he was loved by all and all he loved. As he enjoyed the young years of partying, the many years of restoring cars in the garage, and the end years at fishing and golf.
Arthur J. Putwen
Arthur J. Putwen, 77, a resident of Carpentersville for over 20 years. Formerly of Chicago. died February 22, 2002 at Hines Veterans Administration Hospital in Hines, IL. World War II U.S. Army Veteran.
He is survived by a sister, Gerri (Edward) Olinski of Odessa, FL; a brother, Anthony (Dot) Putwen of Zion, IL; a sister-in-law, Corinne (Edward) Putwan of Carpentersville; also many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
preceded in death by his wife, Vicky; a sister, Leona and a brother, Edward M. Putwen.
Funeral services Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. He is to be interred with his wife and adjacent to his brother at Abraham Lincoln National cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.

Bernice Schrauf
Bernice Schrauf of Arlington, Virginia, formerly of Elgin, Illinois, died Saturday, February 23, 2002 after a courageous five-year fight with cancer. She was the widow of Charles Raymond Schrauf, a long-time officer with the Union National Bank of Elgin.
She was born September 9, 1920 in Cicero, Illinois, and was raised in the Lutheran Orphan Home in Addison, Illinois, affiliated with St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Addison. Her mother had died when she was six months old, and her father also when she was a child. She was a graduate of St. Paul's Lutheran School, Addison.
In her early teens she moved to Elgin. She became an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and worked as a domestic for families from the church in Elgin, and a family in Park Ridge. It was in the Walter League youth group at St. John's where she met Ray. After their marriage in 1944 - a marriage that spanned 54 years - she worked for the First National Bank of Elgin. She was employed by Schock's Florists in Elgin in the 1960s and '70s. After Ray's retirement in the early '80s, they moved to Wisconsin Dells, WI; and then to Baraboo, WI.
Following Ray's death in July, 1999, she moved to Arlington, Virginia to live near her daughter, where they were active members of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Arlington. She was proud of her son, John, a Captain for United Airlines; her daughter, Linda, and her accomplishments as a musician, and professionally in Washington, D.C. at NumbersUSA.com; and her daughter-in-law, Marita, a teacher with the Elgin schools for 24 years. Bernice will be remembered most for her positive spirit and her steadfast faith.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 2, at 1:00 P.M. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 932 McHenry Ave., Crystal Lake, IL. Inurnment River Valley Memorial Gardens, Dundee, IL. Phyllis A. Shaw
Phyllis A. Shaw, 89, of Columbiaville, Michigan. Retired to Lapeer, MI area in 1973. Formerly of Elgin, IL. passed away Monday, February 25, 2002. Born January 31, 1913 in Elgin, IL to Clarence and Emma (Dearborn) Eames. Mrs. Shaw was very involved with the Universalist Church while living in Elgin, Illinois. She was an avid bridge player.
She is survived by her children, Susan (Bill) Burgess of Columbiaville, MI, Jeff Shaw of Deerfield, IL and Phillip (Tammy) Shaw of Campbellsville, KY; 11 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; also two sisters, Luella Kuehl of Sacramento, CA and Priscilla Trost of San Diego, CA.
preceded in death by her husband, Donald Shaw; a son, Stephen Shaw; a grandchild, Terra Shaw; a sister, Celia Eames and her parents.

Howard Laverne Toppel
Howard Laverne Toppel, September 7, 1937 to February 14, 2002. Affectionately known as "Howie", he fought a good fight and battled fiercely, but finally went home to be with the Lord. Howie was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Agnes Toppel and his brother, Ralph Toppel.
Arrangements by Adair Funeral Home, Tucson, AZ. Per Howie's request, there will be no memorial service scheduled.
Howie is survived by his spouse, Lesa Liebsch and their children, Mariah Celaya, Chani Chismar, Andrea Liebsch, John Liebsch III and Steven Burke; grandchildren, Judah Chismar and Destiny Chismar; his former spouse, Mary Toppel and their two children, Christopher Hale (formerly Paul L. Toppel) and Barbara Clark and her three children, Joseph, Patricia and Lee.
Howie is originally from Elgin, Illinois where he worked for 20 years at the York Spring Company. He moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1992. He has many friends and family and is beloved by all.

Lois J. Cheperka
Lois J. Cheperka, 68, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2003 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX after a brave and long battle with leukemia.
She was born January 31, 1934 in Roselle, IL, the daughter of Emil and Alma Becker.
She married
John Cheperka, and they were blessed with Pam and Steve. She had been a long time resident of Elgin. She worked at a private grocery store for many years and then worked as a communication operator for the City of Elgin Police and Fire Departments until she retired in April 1990. At that time she moved to Texas and worked for Caremark. She moved to Hayward, WI in 1993 and then back to Rockport, TX in 2001.
Lois enjoyed traveling, cooking and baking, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, folk art painting, gardening, and she was a master at counted cross stitch. She was cheerful and fun loving, a joy to be around. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed. We will carry her in our hearts forever.
Survivors include her daughter, Pam (Charles) Climer of San Antonio, TX; son Stephen Cheperka of San Antonio, TX; a sister Mary (Arthur) Aevermann of Mountain Home, AR; brother Richard (Karen) Becker of Elgin, IL; long time companion Ferdinand Pasholk of Rockport, TX; grandchildren, Kacy Kirkpatrick, Candice Dubose and husband Mark of San Antonio, Jennifer, Stephen and Summer Cheperka of Elgin; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Austin Dubose of San Antonio; a niece, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003 in the Holy Trinity Church, 357 Division Street, Elgin, IL with Pastor Olin Sletto officiating. Burial will follow in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery, Roselle, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.
