MORRIS -- Samuel R. Nichols, 66, of Morris, died Monday (May 13, 2002) at his home.
Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Thursday at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Braidwood Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Rev. Bret Reedy will officiate.
Burial will be in the Braceville-Gardner cemetery, Braceville.
Memorials may be made to the United Cerebral Palsy Adult Program or to a fund of the donor's choice.
He was born Nov. 22, 1935, in Gardner, the son of James E. and Rose M. Cherfoli Nichols. His parents are deceased.
His first wife, the former Sandra K. Sarver, whom he married
March 10, 1956, is deceased.
Surviving are his wife, the former Linda Viland, whom he married
April 19, 1986; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Colleen Nichols of Joliet, Tina and Larry Hibler of Coal City, Sherry and Bruce Statler of Buckingham; one stepdaughter, Tina Kenny of Morris; three grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Mary Nichols of Braidwood; and nieces and nephews.
One brother, Jimmy Nichols, is deceased.
Mr. Nichols was employed at IVEX Corporation in Joliet. He had previously worked at the paper mill in Wilmington for 28 years.
Walter Baker
Walter D. Baker, 91, of Bradley, died Saturday (May 11, 2002) at Bradley Royale Health Care Center.
Graveside services were held May 13 at Maple Grove cemetery, Bonfield.
Hertz-Thoma Funeral Chapel, Kankakee, was in charge of arrangements.
He was born May 11, 1911, in Bradley, the son of Charles and Sophia Dippon Baker.
His wife, the former Mary Serve, whom he married
in 1935, in Lafayette, Ind., is deceased.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Linda Baker of Bradley; one daughter, Diana Panozzo of Kankakee; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
One brother and sister-in-law are deceased.
Mr. Baker was first employed at Kroehler Manufacturing in Plant 3 on June 8, 1936 as a sander. On May 20, 1946 he was transferred to spraying until 1961. He then returned to Kroehler's Sept. 14, 1964 and became an offline finishing operator in Plant 4 and remained until he retired Feb. 13, 1976 after 36 years of service.
He managed a band called "Walts Musicians" between 1930 and 1935.
He played the banjo, guitar, accordian and piano.
Nettie Scharlach
CISSNA PARK -- Services for Nettie G. Scharlach, 95, of Cissna Park, were held May 13 at Apostolic Christian Church, Cissna Park. Ministers of the church officiated.
Miss Scharlach died May 10, 2002.
Burial was in Apostolic Christian cemetery, Cissna Park. Pallbearers were Jon, Zach and Nathan Anderson, R. Paul and J. Paul Martin and Tim Scharlach.
Darlene Smietanski
Services for Darlene B. Smietanski, 80, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Kankakee, were held May 15 at Bethel Baptist Church, Bourbonnais. Paul Mount officiated.
Mrs. Smietanski died May 11, 2002.
Burial was in Mt. Calvary cemetery. Pallbearers were Mark D. Litton, John and Porter Latham, Kevin and Kelvin Easter and Randy Chaplinski.
Dennis Thomas
A memorial service for Dennis Lee Thomas, 55, of Bradley, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery, with military rites by the Kankakee American Legion Post 85. Rev. Martin Gutzmer will officiate.
Hertz-Thoma Funeral Chapel, Kankakee, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Thomas died Saturday (May 4, 2002) at his home.
He was born Oct. 15, 1946, in Kankakee, the son of Lloyd and Alice Long Thomas. His mother is deceased.
His wife, the former Beverly Yauch, whom he married
Oct. 13, 1968, is deceased.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Candi Thomas of Arcola; his father of Bradley; one brother, Donald "Joe" Thomas of Bradley; two grandchildren, Madison and Macy Thomas of Arcola; and one niece.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Thomas worked at Personal Products for 15 years as a machine operator.
He enjoyed the Chicago White Sox and watching war movies.
Earl Voss
ST. ANNE -- Earl H. Voss, 92, of Battle Creek, Mich., formerly of St. Anne, died Tuesday (May 7, 2002).
Arrangements are pending at the Clancy-Gernon-Houk Funeral Home, St. Anne.
Harry Eastburn
WATSEKA -- Harry B. Eastburn, 85, of Watseka, died Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at the Iroquois Residents' Home, Watseka.
Arrangements are pending at the Knapp Funeral Home, Sheldon.
Jerry Jones
Jerry Jones Sr. 90, of Kankakee, died Sunday (May 5, 2002) at his home.
There will be no visitation or services.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
Arrangements are by Lax Mortuary, Kankakee.
He was born Oct. 7, 1911, in Sunbury, N.C.
His wife, the former Mary Ricks, whom he married
in 1955, is deceased.
Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Debbie Jones of Chesapeake, Va., Titus and Helen Jones of Griffin, Ga., Samuel and Doretha Jones of Portsmouth, Va., Reginald and Tamar Jones of Kankakee; four daughters and one son-in-law, Cecelia and Willie Parker of Portsmouth, Va., Charlotte Powell of Washington, D.C., Emma Burton of Sacramento, Calif., Janice Jones of Caural, Md.; one sister, Tobetha Harrell of Sunbury, N.C.; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Jones worked as a line worker at Veneer Mills in Portsmouth, Va.
He enjoyed fishing and crabbing.
John St. Ange
TOMAHAWK, Wis. -- John A. "Jake" St. Ange III, 62, of Tomahawk, Wis., and the father of Coal City residents, died Monday (April 29, 2002) at his home.
A memorial service was held May 4 at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, Joliet. Rev. Robert C. Carroll officiated.
Memorials may be made to the Ministry Home Care, Rhinelander Home Health and Hospice Service, 1860 N. Stevens St., P.O. Box 716, Rhinelander, Wis. 54504 or to the American Cancer Society.
He was born in Joliet and was a lifelong Joliet area resident before retiring to Tomahawk two years ago.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, the former Rosemary Olivo, of Tomahawk; five daughters and sons-in-law, Toni and Bob Rawlins of Romeoville, Mary and Pat Mallaney, Jacqui and Steve Fenoglio, all of Coal City, Sally and Earl Mack of Braceville, Christine and Dominic St. Ange of Joliet; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his father, John A. St. Ange Jr. of Aurora; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Roberta Irvin of Lockport, Patricia and Elbert Carroll of Joliet; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Georgia St. Ange of Kentucky; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
His mother, Marjorie Jenco St. Ange, is deceased.
Mr. St. Ange was a retired member of the IBEW after 44 years of service.
Lillian Hermen
MOMENCE -- Lillian L. Hermen, 89, of Desloge, Mo., formerly of Momence, died today (May 8, 2002) at National Health Care Nursing Home, Desloge.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Cotter Funeral Home, Momence, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Don Romig will officiate.
Burial will be in Momence cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the family wishes.
She was born Feb. 11, 1913, in St. Anne, the daughter of Julius and Leah Chayer Cote.
Her husband, George W. Hermen, whom she married
June 24, 1933, in Momence, died June 24, 1978.
Surviving are one son, Robert Hermen of Clinton, Ark.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Howard Abbott of Prosperity, S.C., Sharon and Robert Stamm of Farmington, Mo.; five brothers, Wayne Cote and Cecil Cote, both of Donovan, Mo., Earl Cote of Galena, Mo., Arthur Cote of Kankakee, Clifford Cote of Martinton; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Three brothers; two sisters; and one grandchild, are deceased.
She had attended the Church of God Worship Center in Bradley.
Linda Caise
ST. ANNE -- Linda Sue Caise, 54, a resident of Las Vegas, Nev. for 25 years, formerly of St. Anne, died Sunday (April 28, 2002) at her home in Henderson, Nev.
Cremation rites were accorded.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday at the Clancy-Gernon-Houk Funeral Home, St. Anne until the 11 a.m. celebration of the funeral Mass at St. Anne Catholic Church. Rev. James Fanale will officiate.
Burial will be in the St. Anne Church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Hope Hospice of Nevada.
She was born May 22, 1947, in St. Anne, the daughter of Alton H. and Rita Hebert Caise. Her parents are deceased.
Surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Robert Young of Batavia; one brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Kathy Caise of St. Anne; one nephew, Jeff Caise of Loganville, Ga.; and one great-niece, Haley Caise of Chatham.
Miss Caise was a retired registered nurse with PRN Home Healthcare.
She was a member of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary and the Nurses Association.
She enjoyed crafts, traveling and many good friends.
Naldia Green
Naldia C. "ChiChi" Green, 56, of Kankakee, died Saturday (May 4, 2002) at her home.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Lax Mortuary and from 9 a.m. Saturday until the 10 a.m. services at Zion Gate Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member. Rev. Ronald L. Bartlett will officiate.
Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens cemetery.
She was born Sept. 22, 1945, in Chicago, the daughter of John Henry and Dorothy Shepard. Her parents are deceased.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Rev. Anthony Gibbs, Audriea "Liz" and Leonard Winfield Jr., all of Kankakee; two sons and one daughter-in-law, La Marr and Nicole Green, Marcell White, all of Kankakee; one sister and brother-in-law, Aiesha and O'mar Abdul-Malik of Washington, D.C.; four grandsons; four special friends; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was a graduate of Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago and a graduate of Prairie State Community College.
Ms. Green was employed at Kankakee Area Special Education Co-Operative for 14 years where she was a program assistant.
She was the former youth director at her church.
She enjoyed working with the youths, cooking and traveling.
Robert Kaeding
THAWVILLE -- Robert William Kaeding, 77, of Malvern, Ark., formerly of Thawville, died Monday (April 29, 2002).
Graveside services were held May 3 at Klein Memorial Park, Klein, Texas.
Surviving are his wife, Nellie Reid Kaeding; two daughters, Linda Hanson of Memphis, Tenn., Janice Goodman of Louisville, Ky.; one stepson, Bobby Saxton of Houston, Texas; one brother, Marvin Kaeding of Thawville; one sister, Leola Uehle of Gilman; and several grandchildren.
