Eunyce Hanson

HAMILTON, Mont. -- Eunyce Voigt "Vicci" Hanson, 83, of Hamilton, Mont., formerly of Kankakee, died Sunday (Feb. 16, 2003) at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton.

She was born in Kankakee.

A talented woman, she was a concert pianist, violinist, writer, painter, wife, mother, teacher, L.A. Dodger fan and a USC Trojan fan.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Dee and Don Keller of Hamilton, Mont.; one son, Craig Duft of Hemet, Calif.; one granddaughter, Lauren Duft of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; one grandson, Erich Duft of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; one sister, Caroline Wagner of St. Anne; and one daughter-in-law, Nola Duft of Lake Elsinore, Calif.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton, Mont.

Urn placement will take place at a later date at Mound Grove Gardens of Memory in Kankakee.

The family suggests memorials to the Parkinson Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136 or the Bitterroot Humane Assn., 262 Fairgrounds Rd., Hamilton, MT 59840.

June Focken

MARTINTON -- June J. Focken, 79, of Martinton, died Tuesday (Feb. 18, 2003) at the Iroquois Resident Home in Watseka.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. services at the Segur-Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka. John Coney will officiate.

Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Watseka.

Memorials may be made to the Iroquois County Hospice or to the Martinton Church of Christ Building Fund.

Mrs. Focken worked at Western Condensor for many years.

She was born June 29, 1923, in Iroquois, the daughter of Fred and Nellie Howe Coash.

Her husband, Francis A. "PeeWee" Focken, whom she married July 3, 1939, in Kentland, Ind., died Dec. 18, 1995.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Rita Focken of Martinton; one sister, Helen Templin of Indiana; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Two sisters, Edith Coash and Beatrice Miler; and one brother, Lester Coash, are deceased.

She enjoyed gardening, flowers and crocheting.

Irma Dummer-Mattox

Irma Dummer-Mattox, 75, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., formerly of Kankakee, died Wednesday (Feb. 12, 2003) in California, from an extended illness.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. Saturday until the 4 p.m. memorial service at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Memorials may be made to the family wishes.

Mrs. Dummer-Mattox was retired from the Kankakee County Training Center.

She was born April 22, 1927, in Herscher, the daughter of George and Caroline Kline Schuck.

Her first husband, Jerry Dummer, whom she married May 5, 1946, died Feb. 14, 1999.

Surviving are her husband, Wes Mattox, whom she married March 14, 2000, in Hawaii, of California; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Rick Leonard of Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister, Louise Theim of Bourbonnais; one brother, Frank Schuck of New York; and three grandchildren, Paul Offerman of Colorado, James Offerman of Indianapolis, Ind., and Kathy and Chris Swain of Kankakee.

One daughter, Sandra Offerman; and four brothers are deceased.

She enjoyed sewing, cooking, playing the organ, shopping and working crossword puzzles.

Orlan Denault

IRWIN -- Orlan Denault, 66, of Irwin, died today (Feb. 19, 2003) at his home.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Irwin.

Cannie Burks

Visitation for Cannie B. Burks, 38, of Kankakee, will be from 9 a.m. Friday until the 9:30 a.m. services at Lax Mortuary in Kankakee. Robert Gillespie will officiate.

Ms. Burks died Friday (Feb. 14, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital.

She was born Jan. 31, 1965, in Chicago, the daughter of Robert and Gertrude Robinson Burks. Her mother is deceased.

Surviving are one daughter, Latonya Gyles, and her fiance, Daniel Dillon of Beaverville; one son, Wesley McCoffin of Kankakee; her companion, Mackenzie Dudley; her father and stepmother, Robert and Renata Burks of Kankakee; five brothers and two sisters-in-law, Clarence and Linda Burks of Chicago, Artis and Gwen Welch of Watseka, Phillip Welch of Florida, Devon Welch and Billy Baptist, both of Kankakee; eight sisters and one brother-in-law, Willean Burks, Dorothy Burks, Gertrude Burks, Deseria Burks and Denise Burks, all of Kankakee, Elise Burks of Hopkins Park, Maxine and Calvin Pryor of Chicago and Rasheema Welch of Jackson, Miss.

One granddaughter, Sasha Dillon, is deceased.

She was a graduate of Donovan High School and enjoyed cooking and drawing.

Mildred Berry
longtime teacher

CLIFTON -- Visitation for Mildred F. Berry, 87, of Clifton, will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton, where services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Milford.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church in Kankakee or to the donor's choice.

She died Wednesday (Feb. 19, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee, after a short illness.

Mrs. Berry was an elementary school teacher from 1937 until she retired in 1983. She had taught in Zeigler, Ill., Galveston, Texas, Wellington, Clifton and in Milford.

She was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Zeigler, the daughter of Arlen and Julia Dial Browning.

Surviving are her husband, Dale L. Berry, whom she married April 20, 1941, in Zeigler, of Clifton; two sons and one daughter, Macklin "Mack" Berry of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Timothy and Kathy Rhodes Berry of Muskegon, Mich.; one daughter and son-in-law, Kristin and James Nance of Anna; and seven grandchildren.

One brother is deceased.

She graduated from Pestalozzi-Froebel Teachers College and received her teaching certificate from SIU Normal at Carbondale.

Mrs. Berry was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Kankakee and its Women's Group. She loved volunteering at her church and in her community.

She enjoyed reading and flower gardening.

Bernice Bottomley

MORRIS -- Bernice E. Bottomley, 87, of Morris, and the grandmother of a Coal City resident, died Wednesday (Feb. 12, 2003) at the Walnut Grove Healthcare Center in Morris.

Services were held Feb. 15 at the U.C. Davis and Sons Funeral Home in Morris. Rev. Rick Cunningham officiated.

Burial was in Sample cemetery in Morris. Pallbearers were William and Brian Bottomley, Jeffry and Daniel Swiggett, Arnold, Andrew and Scott Brewer and Keith Hiney.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund or to the Joliet Area Hospice.

Mrs. Bottomley retired from Baum's Department Store in 1987.

She was born Aug. 27, 1915, in Wauponsee Township, the daughter of Daniel F. and Pearl I. Hollenbeck Claypool.

Her husband, Claude L. Bottomley, whom she married Aug. 10, 1935, at the First United Methodist Church of Ottawa, died June 5, 1993.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Robert Arnsdorff of Morris; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Anita Bulfer Bottomley of Shorewood; five grandchildren, including Carol and Arnold Brewer of Coal City; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law.

One son and two sisters, who died in infancy; and five brothers, Clarence, Lester, Earl, Lyle and Chester Claypool, are deceased.

She was a league bowler at Echo Lanes and a member of the First Baptist Church and the Women of the Moose.

Alfonzo Brantley

Visitation for Alfonzo "Uncle Junior" Brantley Jr., 65, of Kankakee, will be from 9 a.m. Saturday until the 10 a.m. services at Zion Gate MB Church in Kankakee. Rev. Ronald L. Bartlett will officiate.

Burial, with military rites by the Kankakee American Legion Post 85, will be in Kankakee Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Jones Funeral Home in Kankakee is in charge of arrangements.

He died Sunday (Feb. 16, 2003) at his home.

Mr. Brantley had been a laborer for Azzarelli Construction Co.

He was born May 3, 1937, in Stuttgart, Ark., the son of Alfonzo Sr. and Annetter Walker Brantley. His parents are deceased.

Surviving are his wife, the former Darlene C. Love, whom he married April 24, 1976, in Kankakee; one son, Alonzo Bradley of Newport News, Va.; one daughter, Mary A. Brantley of Stuttgart, Ark.; one stepson, Bruce Anderson; three stepdaughters, Brenda Anderson of Utah, Monica Jackson of Detroit, Mich., Deborah Stewart of Kankakee; one sister, Sarah Holley of Kankakee; one brother and sister-in-law, Jimmie Lee and Elaine Harper of Kankakee; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Frank and Margaret Love of Ft. Meyer, Fla., Leslie and Jermaine Love of Ocala, Fla., Norma Love of Kankakee, Roger and Earlene Love of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Mary Harris of Kankakee; two uncles, one aunt and several nieces and nephews.

One brother, Willie Smith; and three sisters, Daisy Rice, Robelia Caldwell and Mittie A. Foster, are deceased.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Vivian Cain

WATSEKA -- Vivian Ferry Cain, 77, of Watseka, died today (Feb. 20, 2003) at her home.

Arrangements are pending at the Baier Funeral Home in Watseka.

C.J. Cobb

KELL -- C.J. Cobb, 80, of Kell, the father of a Kankakee resident, died Tuesday (Feb. 18, 2003) at the Fireside House of Centralia, Ill.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Saturday until the 1 p.m. services at the Hughey Funeral Home, 1314 Main St., Mt. Vernon. Randy Sells will officiate.

Burial will be in Oddfellows cemetery, Woodlawn.

Mr. Cobb retired from Uniroyal Inc., Joliet Army Ammunition Plant in Elwood.

He was born Jan. 1, 1923, in Clinton, the son of Luther and Cloteel Foster Cobb.

His first wife was the former Emma Knop.

He then married the former Kathryn Sue Ackey Hodge in 1972 in Kankakee. She died Oct. 23, 1985.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Mark Meier of Kankakee; one son, Larry Cobb of Kell; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Steve and Arlene Cobb of Weldon, Bill and Elli Cobb of Smithville, Tenn., Harvey and Helen Cobb of Vonormy, Texas; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Maxine and Bill Baker of Smithville, Tenn., Doris "Dixie" and Tom Hennessy of Chebanse; mother-in-law, Lois Hodge of Mt. Vernon; special friend, Darlene Brewer of Sandoval; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

One son, Gary Cobb; one daughter, Sherry Buss; four brothers, Lloyd Cobb, Howard Cobb, Luther "Ty" Cobb, Edison E. Cobb; and two sisters, Hallie Winstead and Ina Johnson are deceased.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Mr. Cobb was of the Christian faith.

James Culkin

RANTOUL -- James Edward Culkin, 76, of Rantoul, formerly of Kempton, died Monday (Feb. 17, 2003) at Provena Covenant Medical Center.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, with a 3:45 p.m. rosary service, at the Lux Memorial Chapel in Rantoul.

A funeral Mass will be concelebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Malachy Catholic Church in Rantoul, by Revs. Stanley Malinowski and Jeffrey Laible.

Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre cemetery in Rantoul.

Memorials may be made to the Henry Smith Trust Fund at St. Malachy.

Mr. Culkin had worked as a general building contractor in the Rantoul area since 1962. He also served on the village of Rantoul Planning Commission for 17 years and was a former president of the St. Malachy School Board.

He was born May 2, 1926, in Kempton, the son of William Robert and Elizabeth Koerner Culkin.

Surviving are his wife, the former Helen T. Klein, whom he married April 24, 1952, in Rantoul; two sons, Daniel Culkin of Rantoul, William Culkin of Martinsville, Ind.; eight daughters, Theresa Culkin of St. Louis, Mo., Dolores Culkin of Chicago, Donna Culkin of Belleville, Diana Cosner of Shiloh, Carol Jean Zook of Fisher, Janet Rustman of Sherman, Marlene Miller of St. Louis, Mo., Rosalie Braden of Rantoul; one sister, Dorothy Evans of Cullom; and 19 grandchildren.

One son, one granddaughter, two sisters and three brothers are deceased.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran.

Mr. Culkin was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Rantoul Moose and St. Malachy Catholic Church, where he served as a trustee.

He was past president of the Mobile Home Association of Central Illinois.
