DANFORTH - Visitation for Edna Gretja Koets, 95, of Danforth, will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the Redenius Funeral Home, Gilman, and from 10 a.m. Monday until the 11 a.m. services at St. John's Lutheran Church, Danforth, where she was a member. Rev. James Gerth will officiate.
Burial will be in the Danforth cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Gilman Nursing Pavilion, Prairieview Lutheran Home, Danforth or to St. John's Lutheran Church, Danforth.
Mrs. Koets died Friday (March 8, 2002) at the Gilman Nursing Pavilion.
She was born Nov. 23, 1906, in Ashkum, the daughter of George and Anna Brock Meier.
Her first husband, John A. Wilken, whom she married
June 11, 1938, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Danforth, died Nov. 4, 1956.
Her second husband, Tim Koets, whom she married
Sept. 14, 1973, at the Ashkum Methodist Church, died Feb. 25, 1989.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Roy George and Marilyn L. Wilken of Danforth; two grandchildren; two great-grandsons; four stepchildren, Phyllis Garvey of Indianapolis, Ind., Beverly Hendron of Mahomet, Duane Koets of Weslaco, Texas, Gary Koets of Ashkum; and five stepgrandchildren.
One brother, William Meier; and one stepgrandson, Kevin Garvey, are deceased.
She graduated from Ashkum and Gilman High Schools and received her teacher training at Illinois State Normal University.
Mrs. Koets taught in rural and town schools in the Ashkum area for many years.
She was a member of the Dorcas Circle and Sarah Circle of her church.
Everett Diefenbach
HERSCHER - Everett Diefenbach, 88, of Herscher, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee.
Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Herscher Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes, and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the 11 a.m. services at the Grand Prairie United Methodist Church, Bonfield, where he was a member. Rev. Steven Friese will officiate.
Burial will be in the Grand Prairie United Methodist cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Grand Prairie United Methodist Church or to the Pilot Township Fire Department.
Mr. Diefenbach had been a farmer all his life and a member of the Farm Bureau.
He was born Nov. 26, 1913, in Herscher, the son of Adam and Pansy Hertz Diefenbach.
His wife, the former Florence Smith, whom he married
Nov. 25, 1939, at Grand Prairie United Methodist Church, died Jan. 8, 1986.
Surviving are one daughter, Karen Diefenbach of Herscher; one aunt, Mildred Hertz of Reddick; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Menard of St. Anne, Georgia Hardy of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and one brother-in-law, Homer Smith of St. Anne.
Ferne L. Engelhardt
PEOTONE - Ferne L. Engelhardt, 84, of Peotone, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at Manor Care Health Services, Kankakee.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fedde-Helfrich Chapel, Peotone, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. David Plant will officiate.
Burial will be in Skyline Memorial Park, Monee. Pallbearers will be Melvin Marshall, Calvin Younker, Russell Klipp, Jerry Engelhardt, Jerry Baker and Leo Bourg. Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Heyerman, Clyde Engelhardt, William Marshall Sr. and Bruce Carstens.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley or to Immanuel United Church of Christ Stained Glass Window Fund.
She was born April 18, 1917, in rural Peotone, the daughter of John and Julia Hauert Marshall.
Surviving are her husband, Lester Engelhardt, whom she married
May 27, 1939, in Peotone; one brother-in-law, Vernon Engelhardt of Peotone; nieces and nephews, Melvin (Judy) Marshall of Manteno, Jerry (Ann) Engelhardt of Yorkville, Carol (Gene) Lindell of Knoxville, Tenn., Odette Koch of Mt. Sterling, Sharon (Jerome) Martin of Creal Springs and Louese Wanner of Manteno.
One brother, Lewis Marshall, is deceased.
Mrs. Engelhardt was a 60-year member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Peotone.

Harriett M. Kessell Bartusch
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Harriett M. Kessell Bartusch, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Worth and Kankakee, died Wednesday (March 6, 2002).
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home, 11333 S. Central Ave., Oak Lawn, where services will be held at noon Wednesday.
Burial will be in Chapel Hill Gardens South cemetery.
Her husband, Bernard Bartusch, is deceased.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Laquida and Raymond Benton, Sharon and Brian Anema; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Lynn Bartusch, Lonnie and Lisa Bartusch, Jerome and Linda Bartusch; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Bartusch was employed for 15 years with E. J. Korvettes.
She was a member of the International Order of Foresters.
Helmuth "Ham" Schierenbeck
Helmuth "Ham" Schierenbeck, 91, of Bradley, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital, Kankakee.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Wednesday until the 11 a.m. services at the Bradley Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes. Rev. Bruce Salter will officiate.
Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
He was born Aug. 17, 1910, in Bremerhaven, Germany, the son of Deidrich and Trintje Gerdes Schierenbeck.
Surviving are his wife, the former Nelda Bernice Gray, whom he married
April 21, 1934, in St. Louis, Mo., of Bradley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Carol Schierenbeck, Ron and Janet Schierenbeck, all of Bradley; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.
Five brothers, Henry, Herman, George, Albert and Fred Schierenbeck; and two sisters, Helen and Tina, are deceased.
Mr. Schierenbeck worked for 20 years at Kroehlers; was head of maintenance for the Bradley Grade schools from 1948-1968; and retired from J.R. Short Milling in 1977.
He was a member of the Merchant Marines in Germany and came to America in 1926.
He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ.
He enjoyed German music, and was a Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls fan.
Henry L. "Hank" Bishir
MOMENCE - Henry L. "Hank" Bishir, 74, of Momence, died Sunday (March 10, 2002) at Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Cotter Funeral Home, Momence.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Momence, where he was a member. Rev. Dennis White will officiate.
Burial, with military rites provided by the Momence Honor Guard, will be in St. Patrick cemetery.
Memorials may be made for Masses or to the family wishes.
He was born Sept. 9, 1927, in Momence, the son of Charles and Caroline Campbell Bishir.
Surviving are his wife, the former Jean Leinen, whom he married
Feb. 28, 1952, in Momence; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Debbie Bishir of Momence; three daughters and one son-in-law, Paula and Joe Reising, Mary Longtin, Christine Merrill, all of Momence; one sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Steve Serve of Bradley; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Richard and Sharon Lind of Manteno, Ruth Bishir of St. Louis, Mo.; and nine grandchildren.
Two brothers and one son, David S. Bishir, are deceased.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the Momence VFW Post 7535.
Mr. Bishir was a retired machinist from General Foods in Kankakee.
He enjoyed going to flea markets, restoring cars and gardening.

She was born Sept. 3, 1912, in Chicago, the daughter of Anthony and Roberta Jenkauskas Bubel.
Her husband, William H. Ellerman, whom she married
in 1938 in Chicago, is deceased.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, William M. Sr. and Laurie Ellerman of Bonfield; and four grandchildren, William Jr., Adam and Anthony Ellerman and Chauna Rivera.
Two brothers, Bruno and Walter Bubel, are deceased.
Mrs. Ellerman attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Goodrich.
She enjoyed reading and donating to several charities.

June E. Fortier, 86, of Kankakee, died Sunday (March 10, 2002) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital, after a short illness.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Kankakee, where she was a member. Rev. Anthony Taschetta will officiate.
Burial will be in the St. Anne Catholic cemetery.

She was born June 30, 1915, in East Liverpool, Ohio, the daughter of Harold and Genevieve McLaughlin Stoddard.
A retired school teacher, she had taught at St. Martin of Tours grade school and St. Anne Academy.
Her husband, Adolph L. "Duff" Fortier, whom she married
Dec. 7, 1946, in St. Louis, Mo., died June 13, 1969.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Gary Gruver of Fairfield, Ohio; two grandchildren, Denise and Scott Harris of Bourbonnais, Dean Duggins of Decatur; and three great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the CCW of her church and the Kankakee Woman's Club.
Mrs. Fortier had been a leader for Girl Scout Troop 253.
She enjoyed needlework, crafts and was a Chicago Bears fan.

GILMAN - Lawrence P. "Larry" Knochel, 81, of Gilman, died Sunday (March 10, 2002) at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Ur-bana, after a short illness.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Redenius Funeral Home, Gilman, and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the 11 a.m. services at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Gilman, where he was a member. Rev. Robert Downs will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Peter Lutheran cemetery, Crescent City.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Gilman.
He was born Oct. 10, 1920, in Crescent City, the son of Philip and Hattie Roselius Knochel.
His wife, the former Lola T. Schuler, whom he married
Nov. 25, 1945, in Woodworth, died Feb. 19, 1997.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Gloria J. and Edward William Granger of Kankakee; and special friend, Anna Walle of Piper City.
Mr. Knochel worked at Kuiper Sales Company in Gilman from 1962-1985 as an auto service technician. He also did fertilizer work for Farm Services, formerly Shields, from 1983-2000 and farmed. He was a member of the Farm Bureau.
