Anna Darabaris
MANTENO -- Anna P. Darabaris, 86, of Manteno, formerly of Chicago (Roseland), died Saturday (Feb. 22, 2003) at Christ Advocate Hospital in Oak Lawn, following surgery.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James of the Sag Catholic Church, 10600 West Archer Avenue in Lemont. Ret. Navy Chaplain, Rev. Edwin Bochula, will officiate.
Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery, Evergreen Park.
Cremation rites will be accorded by the Cremation Society of Illinois.
She was born June 22, 1916, in Chicago, the daughter of John and Victoria Swiontek.
Her husband, John G. Darabaris, whom she married
in 1936, died June 6, 1954.
Surviving are three sons and one daughter-in-law, Harry and Joan Darabaris of Bourbonnais, George Darabaris of Richton Park, John Darabaris of Denver, Colo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Jerry Schiera of Homer Township; 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Helene Swiontek of Eagle River, Wis.; one sister, Rosemary Martinotti of Palos Hills; and many nieces and nephews.
Four brothers, Stanley, Andrew, Valentine and John Swiontek; one brother-in-law, Richard Martinotti; and one sister, Helen are deceased.
She was affiliated with St. Salomea Church in Chicago, St. Joseph Church in Manteno and Our Lady of the Ridge Church in Chicago Ridge.
Mrs. Darabaris enjoyed making personalized beaded ornaments, crocheting, playing cards and baking Easter Holiday lambs, chicks and bunnies.
She was a Chicago White Sox fan.
Mildred Darnell
Visitation for Mildred Bertha Darnell, 83, of Bradley, will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, with a 7:45 p.m. wake service at the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes. Rev. Marsha Collins will officiate.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser.
She died Wednesday (Feb. 26, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center.
Mrs. Darnell was a homemaker.
She was born Nov. 10, 1919, in Mulkeytown, the daughter of Francis and Velma Hannis Greenwood.
Surviving are her husband, Ottie R. Darnell, whom she married
May 29, 1941, in Jackson, Mo., of Bradley; two sisters, Darline Sherbit of Cadiz, Ky., Charlotte Ebilsizer of Christopher; two grandchildren, William Lemna of Atlanta, Ga., Michael and Kim Lemna of Peoria, Ariz.; and one great-grandchild, Drew Lemna.
One daughter, Sherry Lemna; two sisters, Sybil Lee and Nadine Tennison; and two brothers, Henry and Kenneth Greenwood, are deceased.
She had lived in the Kankakee area since 1956.
Her family was not only important to her; her family was her life.
Sylvesta Gurney
MOMENCE -- Sylvesta Garris Gurney, 89, of Momence Meadows Nursing Center, died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.
There will be no visitation.
Private graveside services will be held Friday at Mound Grove Gardens of Memory. Orville Foster will officiate. Pallbearers will be Micheal Twigg, Orville Foster, Tim O'Connor and Daniel Godwin.
Momence Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
She was born Aug. 29, 1913, in Senath, Mo., the daughter of Jeff and Amanda Wilson.
Her husband, Otto Garris, whom she married
in 1933 in Senath, Mo., died in 1971.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Orville Foster of Bourbonnais, Carol and Gary Millsap Sr. of Kankakee and Rebecca and David Twigg of Chebanse; eight grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Five sisters are deceased.
Elden Harvey

HERSCHER -- Elden C. "Mose" Harvey, 84, of Herscher, died Monday (Feb. 24, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until the 11 a.m. Masonic service followed by a Christian service at the Herscher United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Pastor Jerry Watkins will officiate. Military rites will follow by the Herscher American Legion Post 795.
Cremation rites will be accorded by Hertz-Thoma Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elden C. Harvey Family Scholarship Fund for the Ag Department of Herscher High School or to the donor's choice.
Mr. Harvey had been a foreman with ASCS Agricultural Service; worked in the maintenance department for UniRoyal and retired from farming after 35 years.
He was born March 9, 1918, in Newton, the son of Mose and Dollie Shamhart Harvey.
Surviving are his wife, the former Hazel Widger, whom he married
July 5, 1941, in St. Charles, Mo., of Herscher; one son and daughter-in-law, David M. and Judy Harvey of Kankakee; grandchildren, Stacey and James Atkinson of Kankakee, Wade and Carrie Harvey of Harvard, Neil and Jayme Harvey of Port Orange, Fla.; five great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Anna Harvey of California, Juanita Harvey of Decatur, Lola Smith of Olney; and many nieces and nephews.
Two sons, Daniel M. and Bruce E. Harvey; five brothers, John, Dale, Loren, Delbert and Willoughby Harvey; and one sister, Madge Mitchell, are deceased.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the 19th General Hospital. He was a member of the Herscher American Legion Post 795, where he served as past commander.
Mr. Harvey was a member of the Kankakee Masons, the Moose and past master of the Cabery Masonic Lodge.
His hobbies included golf, gardening and playing cards.
Robert Howland

KEMPTON -- Visitation for Robert E. Howland, 76, of Kempton, will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Harris-Martin-Burke Funeral Home in Cullom, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Herb Thompson will officiate.
Burial, with graveside military rites, will be in Sunnyslope cemetery in Saunemin.
Memorials may be made to the Kempton Fire Department or to the American Cancer Society.
He died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee.
Mr. Howland had worked at the Kempton Co-op for over 20 years before going to General Foods in Kankakee, where he worked for 23 years, retiring in 1986.
He was affiliated with the Kempton Fire Department for over 50 years and a longtime member of the Kempton Village Board.
He was born Sept. 14, 1926, in Saunemin, the son of Lawrence V. and Lena Hahn Howland. His parents are deceased.
Surviving are his wife, the former Esther M. Schoon, whom he married
Nov. 25, 1948, at the Methodist Church in Kempton, of Merkle-Knipprath Home in Clifton; one son and daughter-in-law, Russell L. and Linda Schoon of Ashkum; one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Ann and John McWhorter of Fairbury; three grandchildren, Carri Gray, Dennis Schoon and Leah McWhorter; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Emily Howland of Hackensack, Minn. and Mason and Alice Crow of Towanda.
One granddaughter, Darci Schoon; and one infant sister are deceased.
He was educated in Saunemin schools and was a 1944 graduate of Saunemin High School.
Mr. Howland served with the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a 50-year member of the Olson-Bute American Legion Post 737, Kempton, and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2131 in Clifton.

Lorna Gail Jones, 49, of Kankakee, formerly of Harvey, died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at Manor Care Health Services.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until the noon services at Fitzpatrick Funeral Directors in Kankakee.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Ms. Jones was a truck driver for Land-Air Transport in Greenville, Tenn. until she became ill in August 2002.
She was born Aug. 20, 1953, in Fort Knox, Ky., the daughter of Leon Jr. and Patience Rainey. Her father is deceased.
Surviving are her mother, Patience Eldredge of Kankakee; one son, Elvin Jones of Hammond, Ind.; three daughters, Katryce Jones of Kankakee, Kandyce Jones and Kiarra Jones, both of Hopkins Park; one sister, Beverly Pearson of Saginaw, Mich.; and six grandchildren.
One grandson is deceased.
Margaret Maher
centenarian dies
GILMAN -- Visitation for Margaret Maher, 100, of Gilman, will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Redenius Funeral Home in Gilman.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilman, where she was a member. Revs. John Balluff and John Sebahar will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery in Gilman.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Prairieview Lutheran Home in Danforth or to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
She died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at Prairieview Lutheran Home in Danforth.
Miss Maher worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee and for 33 years worked in nursing education and administration at Englewood Hospital in Chicago.
She was born June 10, 1902, in Pontiac, the daughter of James and Catherine Foley Maher.
Surviving are one sister-in-law, Viola Maher of Gilman; several cousins; and special friends, Ty and Tom Fairley of Gilman.
Four brothers, John, Frank, William and Joseph Maher; one sister, Catherine Maher, and several cousins are deceased.
She moved from Pontiac to Odell at the age of 6. She attended Odell schools and was a 1921 graduate of Gilman High School. She also graduated in 1934 from St. Josephs Hospital School of Nursing in Bloomington and received a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of St. Louis.
She moved from Odell to Gilman in 1920.
Miss Maher was a member of the Nursing Association, the Council of Catholic Women and had taught catechism in her church.
She enjoyed nursing, medicine, her church and her home.
Margaret Clements
MARTINTON -- Services for Margaret A. Clements, 67, of Martinton, were held Feb. 25 at the Baier Funeral Home in Watseka. John Coney officiated.
Mrs. Clements died Feb. 22, 2003.
Burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetery in Martinton. Pallbearers were Nick Brault, Joshua and Mike Clements, John Hawkins and Joseph and Robert Rees.
