Ronald Platz

CULLOM -- Visitation for Ronald E. "Potsie" Platz, 47, of Cullom, will be from 4-8 p.m. today at St. John's Lutheran Hall, Cullom.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cabery United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Revs. Deb Talbott and Herb Thompson will officiate.
Burial will be in West Lawn cemetery, Cullom.
Memorials may be made for his son's education or to the Cullom Fire Department.
Arrangements are by the Harris-Martin-Burke Funeral Home, Cullom.
Mr. Platz died Wednesday (May 8, 2002) at OSF St. James Hospital, Pontiac.
He was born March 21, 1955, in Pontiac, the son of Delmar C. and LaVerne I. Wylie Platz. His parents are deceased.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Ann Colman, whom he married June 19, 1982, at the Cabery United Methodist Church, of Cullom; one son, Shawn Platz of Cullom; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Delmar L. and Glenda Platz of Fairbury, John and Pat Platz of Cullom; and his mother-in-law, Betty C. Colman of rural Buckingham.
One sister, Donna Marie Platz, died in infancy.
He was educated in Cabery and Kempton Grade Schools and was a 1973 graduate of Tri-Point High School.
Mr. Platz had worked from 1973-1994 at the Cullom Co-Op and for the past three years he had worked for D.L. Libby Trucking in Bradley.
He was a trustee at his church for several years.
He was a 20 year member of Cullom Fire and EMS, where he was a Firefighter III.
Mr. Platz was also a Cub Master for Pack 88 for six years; a member of the Tri-Point FFA Alumni; had coached and umpired Little League; and helped Halpin's as a Dairy Showman.
He collected beer memorabilia.

Sylvia Haney

HOPKINS PARK -- Visitation for Sylvia Carroll Haney, 74, of Hopkins Park, will be from 1 p.m. Saturday until the 2 p.m. services at Christian Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Hopkins Park, where she was a member. Rev. Harold Harris will officiate.
Burial will be in Momence cemetery, Ganeer Township.
Lax Mortuary, Kankakee, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Haney died Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee.
She was born Aug. 9, 1927, in New Orleans, La., the daughter of James and Katherine Platt Campbell.
Surviving are her husband, Napoleon Haney of Hopkins Park; two daughters, Katherine Haney of Indianapolis, Ind., Lorraine Biggers of Lamarque, Texas; two brothers-in-law, Johnnell Smith of Grayburg, Texas, Freddie Smith of Houston, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Barbara and Joe Green of Beaumont, Texas, Maxine Smith of Galveston, Texas; six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
One daughter, Lynette R. Clayton, is deceased.
She was a resident of the area for 30 years.
Mrs. Haney was employed at John Burguard in Melrose Place for eight years where she was a machine operator.
She served on the mother's board at her church.
She enjoyed volunteering and dedicating her time to the church, school and community.

Sylvia Mize

GILMAN -- Sylvia K. Mize, 90, of Farina, formerly of Gilman, died Thursday (May 9, 2002) at St. Anthony Hospital in Effingham.
She and her husband owned and operated the Mize Tavern in Gilman.
Arrangements are pending at the Redenius Funeral Home, Gilman.

Thelma Oostmeyer

Thelma Victoria "Toots" Gunnarson-Oostmeyer, 91, of Kankakee, formerly of Blue Island, died Thursday (May 9, 2002). She had resided at Westwood Oaks since 1996 where she had made many friends.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday until the 11 a.m. services at the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes. Rev. Don Long will officiate.
Cremation rites will be accorded after the service.
Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or to Hospice of Kankakee Valley.
She was born Dec. 1, 1910, in Blue Island, the daughter of Carl Magnus and Anna Hellquist Gunnarson. Her parents are deceased.
Her husband, Harmon Oostmeyer, whom she married Oct. 7, 1930, in Crown Point, Ind., died in 1996.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Jeane and Dr. Leslie Lindberg of Kankakee; two sisters, Mildred Werstler of Chicago, Margaret Magee-Campbell of Venice, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Harold Witkop of Indiana; one sister-in-law, Ida Jane Eglian of Chicago; one grandson, David and Kathy Kyrouac and their children Kimberly and Lauren Kyrouac, all of Des Plaines; and several nieces and nephews.
Two brothers, Ernst Gunnarson and William Gunnarson, are deceased.
Mrs. Oostmeyer enjoyed employment at Kline's Department Store in Blue Island as a department head. She also was very creative with floral designs and arranging, as well as excelling in needlework, crocheting and many other handwork arts.
She was a member of the Methodist faith.
She was an avid reader and sports enthusiast, especially the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls. She was always interested in the political arena and kept up with current affairs. She loved history and poetry.

Clara Bate

PEOTONE -- Clara M. Bate, 99, of Peotone, died Wednesday (May 8, 2002) at Miller Healthcare Center, Kankakee.
Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Friday at the Fedde-Helfrich Chapel, Peotone, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Rev. David Plant will officiate.
Burial will be in Peotone cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Immanuel United Church of Christ, Peotone, where she was a member.
She was born Dec. 19, 1902, in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of August C. and Anna Frahm Klemme.
Her first husband, Harry A. Schroeder, whom she married Aug. 22, 1923, died in 1947.
Her second husband, Lloyd E. Bate, whom she married Jan. 31, 1954, died Jan. 22, 2001.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Lyle Carstens of Peotone; one son and daughter-in-law, Milan and Bobbie Schroeder of Peotone; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Don and Lorna Bate of Peotone; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Alice and Harry Deboer of Lansing; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren and 17 step-great-grandchildren.
Three brothers and three sisters are deceased.
Mrs. Bate was a member of the church choirs for 75 years, Sunday School and the Women's Fellowship at her church. She was also a member of the Peotone American Legion Auxiliary and the Eastern Star.

Earl Voss

Visitation for Earl H. Voss, 92, a resident of Provena Heritage Village, Bourbonnais for 15 years and formerly of Beaverville and St. Anne, will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Clancy-Gernon-Houk Funeral Home, St. Anne, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday. Rev. Bruce Salter will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Anne Township cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the ALS Foundation.
Mr. Voss died Tuesday (May 7, 2002) in Battle Creek, Mich.
He was born May 16, 1909, in Papineau, the son of George and Elsie Springer Voss.
His wife, the former Florence DuMontelle, whom he married March 30, 1931, in Papineau, died in June 1978.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Earl Wayne and Mayda Voss of St. Anne, Gerald and Roberta Voss of Athens, Mich.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Leo and Dorothy Voss of Zephyr Hills, Fla., Harvey Voss of Kalamazoo, Mich.; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Iona Arseneau; one sister, Laurena; and one brother, Arnold, are deceased.
Mr. Voss was a farmer in St. Anne, Beaverville, Papineau and Athens, Mich.
He was a member of the Church of Christ.
He spent winters in Zephyr Hills, Fla. and enjoyed golfing, music and dancing.

Edna Kuster

WOODWORTH -- Edna S. Kuster, 83, of Woodworth, died today (May 9, 2002) at her home.
Arrangements are pending at the Knapp Funeral Home, Cissna Park.

Elton Rabe

WILMINGTON -- Elton C. "Rudy" Rabe, 82, of Wilmington, died Wednesday (May 8, 2002) at Rosewood Care Center, Joliet.
Arrangements are pending at the Freitag Funeral Home, Wilmington.
He was born Oct. 15, 1919, in Yorkville, the son of Rudolph and Emma Schultz Rabe.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, the former Betty Jo Sims; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jack Saye of Asheville, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Caryn Rabe of Tempe, Ariz.; and three grandsons.
Two sisters, Verda L. Rabe and Mary Ann Mathesius; and one infant brother, Carl Rabe, are deceased.
He was a World War II veteran serving with the U.S. Army Air Corp in the European Theater as a B-17 pilot. He was a life member of the Stone City VFW.
Mr. Rabe was property administrator of the Joliet Arsenal for 35 years retiring in 1982.
He was a member of Sippi's Coffee Klutch and Grace Lutheran Church.

Emmanuel Hofbauer

WATSEKA -- Emmanuel Hofbauer, 88, of Watseka, died today (May 9, 2002) at his home.
Arrangements are pending at the Segur-Knapp Funeral Home, Watseka.

Harry Eastburn

WATSEKA -- Visitation for Harry B. Eastburn, 85, of Watseka, will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Knapp Funeral Home, Sheldon, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Karen Martin will officiate.
Private graveside services will be held at Sheldon cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Iroquois Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Memorial Fund; Iroquois Memorial Hospice or to the United Church of Sheldon.
Mr. Eastburn died Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at the Iroquois Residents Home, Watseka.
He was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Sheldon, the son of Harry R. and Martha Moore Eastburn.
Surviving are his wife, the former Rosemary E. Maddin, whom he married April 19, 1941, in Chicago, of Watseka; two daughters and one son-in-law, Nancy Jo and Kenneth Tucker of Watseka, Patti Lynn McMurray of Chicago; one sister, Virgie Pelquoin of Madison, Wis.; and one sister-in-law, Lu Sullivan of Arlington Heights.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II as a photographer on the U.S.S. Hancock.
Mr. Eastburn managed Eastburn Elevator at Eastburn Station for 20 years. He was also a photographer for the Watseka Times and was employed at UARCO.
