Katherine Hoekstra
ST. ANNE -- Katherine J. Hoekstra, 87, of St. Anne, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) at the Miller Center in Kankakee.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Clancy-Gernon-Houk Funeral Home, St. Anne, and from 10 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. services at the First Reformed Church of Wichert, where she was a member. Rev. Gerald Norman will officiate.
Burial will be in the Oakwood cemetery, Wichert.
Memorials may be made to the First Reformed Church of Wichert.
She was born June 22, 1915, in Friesland, Wis., the daughter of Harry and Irene VanDerMeer Oosterhoff.
Her husband, William J. Hoekstra, whom she married
Dec. 10, 1937, in Chicago, died Oct. 15, 1996.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Sandy Hoekstra, Jerald and June Hoekstra, all of St. Anne; one daughter, Nancy Hoekstra of Downers Grove; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Emily and Clarence Ouwenga of Manteno, Roselle and Eddie Miedema of St. Anne; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Bernice Oosterhoff of Oak Lawn, Richard and Judy Oosterhoff of St. Anne; five grandchildren, Steve and Junell Hoekstra of St. Anne, Denise and Len Tully of Park Ridge, Tom and Mary Hoekstra and David and Cathy Hoekstra, all of St. Anne, Lori Jo Hoekstra of Los Angeles, Calif.; nine great-grandchildren, Katherine, Jennifer, Nathaniel, Jackson, Reed, Michael and Daniel Hoekstra and Sarah and Caroline Tully; and two sisters-in-law, Beverly Terpstra of Tucson, Ariz. and Eleanor Oosterhoff of Manteno.
One sister, Clara; and three brothers, John, Ed and Harry, are deceased.
Mrs. Hoekstra was a homemaker.
She enjoyed needlework and crocheting.
Nathaniel Jones
Nathaniel E. Jones, infant son of Daniel Thaddis and Hazel Jones of Kankakee, died at birth Wednesday (Dec. 25, 2002) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital, Kankakee.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
Clancy-Gernon Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
Surviving besides his parents are siblings, Ashlee Thaddis and Desiree Thaddis; stepgrandfather, Walter Davis; and other family members.
Adrian LaFine
Visitation for Adrian R. "Swede" LaFine, 71, of Bourbonnais, will be from 4 p.m. today until the 6 p.m. service at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, Bourbonnais.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
Memorials may be made to the family's wishes.
Mr. LaFine died Thursday (Dec. 26, 2002).
He was born Dec. 21, 1931 in Kankakee, the son of Adrian J. and Lena Guttendorf LaFine. His parents are deceased.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary O. Klingsmith, whom he married
May 28, 1966 in Kankakee, of Bourbonnais; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Tami LaFine of Bourbonnais, Fred and Kris LaFine of Bradley, four daughters and three sons-in-law, Lisa and Bruce Beland, Rhonda and Steve Hanlon, all of Bourbonnais, Lena Mechelle LaFine of Bradley, Gena and Ryan Blackwell of Evansville, Ind.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Arliss DeYoung, Linda and Danny Grace, all of Bourbonnais, Joan and Eldon Boudreau of Kankakee; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Melvin LaFine, Marvin and Julie LaFine, all of Kankakee, Dee and Marsha LaFine of Maumee, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
One brother and sister-in-law, Kenny and Billie Jean LaFine, are deceased.
Mr. LaFine retired from A.O. Smith after 37 years of service.
He was a U.S. Marines Corps veteran, serving during the Korean War as a military policeman.
He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Kankakee.
Mr. LaFine was a color guard champion for the Kankakee VFW Color Guard, a member of the Kankakee VFW, and a past commander of the Bradley American Legion.
He enjoyed bowling, Friday night stock car races and camping.
Florence Max
WILMINGTON -- Florence M. Max, 96, of Wilmington, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) at Rosewood Care Center in Joliet.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday until the 11 a.m. services at the Reeves Funeral Home in Wilmington. Rev. Kim Peterson will officiate.
Burial will be in the Oakwood cemetery in Wilmington.
Memorials may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church of Wilmington.
Mrs. Max had worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1968.
She was born Aug. 19, 1906, in Joliet, the daughter of Peter and Anna Anderson Lindstrom.
Her first husband, Donald Morrison, died in 1939. She then married
Lou Max. He died in 2000.
Surviving are four nieces, including Anita (Terry) Max-Atchison of Herscher; five nephews; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Lindstrom of Joliet and Evelyn Lindstrom of Pontiac; and several great-nieces and great-nephews; and cousins.
Four brothers, Carl, Donald, LaVerne and Iner Lindstrom; and one sister, Bernice, are deceased.
Mrs. Max was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Wilmington, where she was involved with several church organizations and the Wilmington Garden Club.
Marion Merkle
PAXTON -- Marion C. Merkle, 100, of Paxton, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) at the Gibson Area Hospital in Gibson City.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the Ford-Baier Funeral Home, Paxton, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Rev. Edgar L. Peters will officiate.
Burial will be in the Ashkum cemetery.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Mr. Merkle farmed in Iroquois County for several years. He was a butcher at the Grab-It Here, Bob and Hatties Market and Rose's Market, all in Paxton and during World War II he worked in the ammunition plant in Wilmington.
He was born June 11, 1902, in rural Ashkum, the son of John W. and A. Bessie Cope Merkle.
His first wife, the former Rose J. Conrad, whom he married
June 17, 1924, died July 1, 1965.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lorene W. Cain, whom he married
July 16, 1966; two sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin and Bonnie Merkle of Gilman, Leroy and Jackie Merkle of Hawesville, Ky.; three daughters and one son-in-law, Joyce and Ardell Schaumburg and Janice Mitchell, all of Paxton, Shirley Scarboro of Gilbert, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandson; and one sister, Mildred Potratz of Kankakee.
An infant daughter; one brother; twin sisters; one grandson; two great-grandsons and two step-great-grandchildren, are deceased.
He attended country schools in Iroquois County.
Mr. Merkle enjoyed building windmills.
Lila Metcalf
ELWOOD -- Lila D. "Peanut" Metcalf, 49, of Elwood, and the sister of a Coal City resident, died Tuesday (Dec. 24, 2002) at her home.
Services were held Dec. 28 at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home in Joliet. Rev. Dennis Morris officiated.
Burial was in Maple Hill cemetery, Elwood.
Surviving are her mother, Virginia Brooks Metcalf of Elwood; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Al Pehlke of Shorewood; one brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Wanda Metcalf of Coal City; her fiance, Gordon Martin of Coal City; and several nieces and nephews.
Her father, B.H. Metcalf, died in 1985.
Miss Metcalf was a member of Calvary Apostolic Church in Romeoville and the Center for Independent Living Board, where she was a former vice-president.
Walter Schall
NAPERVILLE -- Walter Milton Schall, 87, of Naperville, formerly of Kankakee, died Monday (Dec. 23, 2002) at his home.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home in Naperville.
Burial was in the Naperville cemetery.

Mr. Schall began his career at Kroehler Mfg. Co. in Inglewood, Calif., in 1942. He headed up the research and development department working on making wooden aircraft parts for the Army, which at that time the rear half of the fuselages were made of wood. From Inglewood, he was transferred by Kroehler to Dallas, Texas, as department manager where they manufactured the rear half of fuselages of airplanes. After finishing their government contracts, he was transferred to Kankakee. Using the theories of wooden fuselages for planes, they applied it to case goods manufacturing for furniture. In 1954, Mr. Schall was transferred from Kankakee to Naperville where he served as superintendent of upholstering until 1956 when he became plant manager, serving in that capacity for 21 years until his retirement in 1979.
He was born Sept. 26, 1915, in Penfield, N.Y., the son of Carl and Lena Baumgartner Schall.
His wife, the former Constance "Connie" Jepsen, is deceased.
One brother, Charles "Charlie" Schall, is deceased.
Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Del Kaufman of Decatur, Nancy and Tom Kneer of LaSalle, Sue and Scott Pinkman of Mascoutah, Janet and Ken Cecil of Plainfield; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He received his bachelor's of forestry degree from New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse, N.Y., and his master's of forestry degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
Mr. Schall moved to Naperville in 1954 from Kankakee. He served as president of the Naperville Rotary Club International and had been a member of Rotary since 1956. He was a member of the Naperville Heritage Society and was chairman of the chapel preservation project, member of the Naperville Bicentennial Commission in 1976, member of the DuPage County Water Commission, served on the City of Naperville Planning Commission form 1970-1972, served as a board member of the Naperville Savings and Loan Association and was a member of the Community United Methodist Chruch in Naperville.
Donna Walsh
NEW LENOX -- Donna M. Walsh, 60, of New Lenox Township, formerly of Kankakee and Bourbonnais, died Wednesday (Dec. 25, 2002) at her home.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Judes Church. Rev. David Brecht officiated.
Burial was in the Abraham Lincoln National cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Judes Building Fund.
Mrs. Walsh was retired from the Department of Children and Family Services after serving them for 35 years as a supervisor of a Child Abuse Team.
She was born in Chicago the daughter of Henry and Hazel Wayda Kaminski. Her parents are deceased. She lived in New Lenox for 34 years.
Surviving are her loving husband of 37 years, James E. Walsh; three aunts, Lottie Samek of New Port Richey, Fla., Maureen Wayda of Lake Forrest, Calif., Wanda Klien of Redding, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Patricia A. Walsh; and several friends including Carol Swanson.
Two uncles are deceased.
Mrs. Walsh was a member and past Lector at St. Judes Church.
She was an avid golfer and a diehard Green Bay Packer fan.
Clarence West
Clarence J. West, 92, of Kankakee, died Friday (Dec. 27, 2002) at Riverside Medical Center.
Visitation was from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, Bourbonnais, where services were held at 10 a.m. today. Rev. Dennis Settles officiated.
Burial was in Limestone cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Limestone Fire Station.
Mr. West retired from International Harvester and maintained the Limestone School buses for many years. During World War II, he was chief mechanic of vehicles at the army ammunition plant in Elwood.
He was born Nov. 20, 1910 in Braidwood, the son of William and Pauline Bukowski West.
His wife, the former LaVanche McGillvary, whom he married
Nov. 28, 1935 in Goodrich, died in January 2000.
Surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert West of Kankakee, Roger and Rita West of Bonfield; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Duane Ferris, Cheryl and Dino Helopoulos, all of Bonfield; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Four brothers, Felix, Sam, Tom and Frank West; and three sisters, Harriet Kelsey, Ann Dwyer and Helen Melbourn, are deceased.
Mr. West attended St. Rose Catholic Church.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
