Mabel Yatuni
METROPOLIS -- Mabel Ruth Burnette Yatuni, 88, formerly of Metropolis and a former area resident, died Monday (Dec. 23, 2002) at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado.
Visitation will be from noon Friday until the 2 p.m. services at the Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia. Rev. Bobby Strong will officiate.
Burial will be in the Hebron cemetery, Broughton.
Ms. Yatuni retired in 1970 from Manteno State Hospital.
She was born Nov. 7, 1914, in New Haven, the daughter of Loren and Bessie Greer Johnson.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Kirk and Lovetta Burnette of Galatia; two daughters, Janet (Staton) Choat and fiance, Jim Rector of Carrier Mills, Gala Sue Everett of Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Lorene Goodman of New Harmony, Ind.; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and three stepgrandchildren; special niece, Dale Maxine Smith of Mt. Vernon, Ind.; and several other nieces and nephews.
Deceased are three brothers who died in infancy; and one sister, Edith Goodman.
She was a member of Little Chapel Church in Raleigh.
Norma Armstrong

Norma June Armstrong, 75, of Bradley, died Wednesday (Dec. 25, 2002) at Bradley Royale Health Care Center.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the music program at Calvary Bible Church, Bradley.
The Bourbonnais Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
Miss Armstrong taught school in Ellsworth, Comstock and Muskegon Heights public schools in Michigan. In 1962, she was commissioned as a missionary teacher by the Church of the Nazarene and was sent to the Republic of the Phillippines. She taught the children of missionaries at Faith Academy in Baguio City. She served there until October 1976, when she retired. During this time, she was ordained as a minister with the Church of the Nazarene.
She was born May 13, 1927, in Holland, Mich., the daughter of Edward and Mabel Becker Armstrong.
Surviving are two sisters and one brother-in-law, Judith and Philip Saurer of Kankakee, Joyce Martin of Ft. Worth, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
One sister, Gloria (Beckwith) Darling, is deceased.
She graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Olivet Nazarene University in 1951 and received her master's degree in education from Western Michigan University.
Miss Armstrong attended Calvary Bible Church in Bradley.
She enjoyed cats and playing golf.
Bernice Becker
EMINGTON -- Visitation for Bernice L. Becker, 80, of rural Emington, will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the Harris-Martin-Burke Funeral Home in Cullom and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the 11 a.m. services at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cullom, where she was a member. Rev. Edward R. Stone will officiate.
Burial will be in the West Lawn cemetery, Cullom.
Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Cullom, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Mrs. Becker died Wednesday (Dec. 25, 2002) at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
She was born June 1, 1922, the daughter of John A. and Rose A. Eichelkraut Landis.
Her husband, Harvey N. Becker, whom she married
Oct. 5, 1938, in Pontiac, died Oct. 29, 1998.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and JoAnn Becker of rural Emington, Roger and Diana Becker of Kempton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Donald Trainor of Cornell, Carol and Dave Tharp of Cullom; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Vivian Becker of Dwight and Alice and Joe Dandre of Glendale Heights.
She attended Kempton High School and was a member of the Women of the ELCA.
Lenamae Cheesman

ASHKUM -- Lenamae J. Cheesman, 85, of Ashkum, died Thursday (Dec. 26, 2002) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, after a short illness.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Ashkum, where she was a member. Rev. Jan Horne will officiate.
Burial will be in the Ashkum cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or to the family wishes.
Mrs. Cheesman was a restauranteur for many years.
She was born April 16, 1917, in Ashkum Township, the daughter of Henry and Frances Smith Aden.
Her husband, Robert D. Cheesman, whom she married
Dec. 7, 1954, in Martinsville, Ind., is deceased.
Surviving are seven nieces and nephews; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Four brothers and one sister are deceased.
Paul Cravens

GILMAN -- Visitation for Paul Cravens, 85, of Gilman, will be from 3-6 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. Monday until the 11 a.m. services at the Redenius Funeral Home, Gilman. Rev. Gary Fairchild will officiate.
Inurnment will be held at a later date at Wenger cemetery in Gilman.
Memorials may be made to Iroquois Memorial Hospice or to the donor's choice.
He died Wednesday (Dec. 25, 2002) at the Gilman Nursing Pavilion, after an extended illness.
Mr. Cravens was a landscaper and truck driver. For many years he had worked for the Onarga Nursery and Gibson Transfer, both in Onarga, and Security Lumber Company in Bradley.
He was born July 2, 1917, in Gentry's Mill, Ky., the son of Tim and Kit Briant Cravens.
Surviving are his wife, the former Helen M. Griest, whom he married
in 1939, in Peoria; two daughters, Geraldine "Gerri" Fiets of Bourbonnais, Pauline Miller and her husband, Ron Allen of Acworth, Ga.; son-in-law, Arnold Hess of Danforth; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild and four step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eula Wenke of Greenwood, Ind., Sara Moss of Columbia, Ky., Anne Conover of Russell Springs, Ky.; and three brothers, Charles Cravens of Shepherdsville, Ky., Samual Cravens of Lebanon Junction, Ky., and George Cravens of Middletown, Ohio.
One daughter, Dorothy Hess; one brother, Carl Cravens; and one son-in-law, Harold Fiets, are deceased.
He moved from Kentucky to Illinois in 1933. He had lived in Melvin, Roberts, and Onarga, moving to Gilman in April of 1942.
Mr. Cravens was a member of the Baptist Church and the Chauffeurs and Teamsters Union for 37 years.
He enjoyed woodworking.
Basil Duke

WILMINGTON -- Basil Mayo Duke, 87, of Wilmington, formerly of the Chicago/Blue Island area, died Tuesday (Dec. 24, 2002) in Hinsdale.
Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. Sunday at the Freitag Funeral Home, 700 E. Kahler, Wilmington, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday.
Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre cemetery in Alsip.
Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
Mr. Duke retired in 1980 as a bus driver for the CTA (Beverly Barn).
He was born March 6, 1915, in Dresden, Tenn., the son of John R. and Gertie Lee Sutherland Duke.
His wife, the former Anne Roboty, died in 1992.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Daryle and Barbara Duke of Wilmington; one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Bob Jarkovich of Lombard; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vern Wood and Aileen Ferrarini; and several nieces and nephews.
Seven brothers and sisters are deceased.
Mr. Duke was a World War II veteran and a member of the Glenn Maker American Legion Post 1160 Chicago Ridge.
Joan Hauersperger
PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. -- Joan C. Benoit Hauersperger, 57, of Pass Christian, Miss., a Kankakee native, died Thursday (Dec. 26, 2002) in Pass Christian.
Private services will be conducted at a later date.

Riemann Funeral Home, Pass Christian, Miss., is in charge of arrangements.
Surviving are her husband, George L. Hauersperger of Pass Christian; one daughter, Victoria Jo Hauersperger of Virginia Beach, Va.; three brothers, Jo Dee Benoit of Kankakee, Greg Benoit of East Lyme, Conn., Richard Benoit of Kansas City, Kan.; and one sister, Vicky Prater of Woodstock, Ga.
Her parents, Albert Benoit Jr., and Faith M. Gereaux Benoit; one son, Heath L. Hauersperger; and her grandparents, Leonard and Alice Gereaux, are deceased.
Mrs. Hauersperger was a native of Kankakee, and also a Mississippi Gulf Coast resident for five years.
She enjoyed traveling by motorcycle with her husband and loved the beach and the casinos.
Charles Hudson

Visitation for Charles Felix Hudson, 77, of Kankakee, will be from 8 a.m. Saturday until the 10 a.m. services at Lax Mortuary in Kankakee.
Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens cemetery.
He died Monday (Dec. 23, 2002) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital, Kankakee.
Mr. Hudson was retired from Henkel Corporation.
He was born June 9, 1925, the son of Charles and Melzner Staleon Hudson.
Surviving are his wife, the former Letha Hart Malone, whom he married
Aug. 24, 1991; one son, Clayton Cortez Hudson; two stepsons, Raphel (Diana) Malone of Bourbonnais, Rexford (Gwen) Malone of Midland, Mich.; three stepdaughters, Veda Renee Griffin, Cherry (Willey) Marshall, Rhonda (Demetrius) Higginbottom, all of Kankakee; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and John Howard of Orrville, Ohio; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Bernadine Hudson of Joliet; many nieces and nephews and special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Christopher and Mr. and Mrs Leroy Schweigert.
One son, Charles Stacy Hudson; one brother, David; one sister, Lillie, are deceased.
Mr. Hudson was a Jehovah's Witness.
He enjoyed fishing.
