Allen, Helen
PEMBROKE -- Visitation for Helen Rean "Ma" Allen, 73, of Pembroke, will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Lax Mortuary, Kankakee.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gethsemane Gardens Missionary Baptist Church. Her brother, Rev. Ervin T. Marshall, will officiate.
Burial will be in the Momence cemetery.
She died Sunday (Oct. 5, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.
Mrs. Allen had worked for Permonite in Indiana and as a receptionist for the Village Hall in Pembroke.
She was born May 3, 1930, in Philadelphia, Miss., the daughter of Roy and Jannie Adams Marshall.
Her husband, Raymond E. Allen Sr., is deceased.
Surviving are two sons, Raymond Allen Jr. and Robert Allen, both of St. Anne; three daughters, Gloria Watson and Dora Allen, both of Kankakee, Dorise Allen of St. Anne; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Leroy and Ruth Marshall of Chicago, Wiley and Claudia Marshall of Interlachen, Fla., Adam and Jean Marshall of St. Anne, Rev. Ervin and Mae Marshall of Sun River Terrace, Franklin and Mary Marshall of Oceanside, Calif.; six sisters and two brothers-in-law, Clotee Murray and Loereath Rone, both of Momence, Vestine and Leslie Glosson and Allois Griggs, all of St. Anne, Irene Woods and Murlie and Ben Binford, all of Chicago; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Murline Allen; one son, John Allen; two brothers, Cleveland Marshall and Clifton Marshall Sr.; two grandsons, Virgil Lockett and Tracy Lockett; and one granddaughter, Kendra Lockett, are deceased.
Mrs. Allen was a member of Gethsemane Gardens Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as president of the Usher Board.
She was a resident of the area for 52 years and enjoyed fishing.
Allen, Walter
COWDEN -- Walter L. Allen, 69, of Cowden, the father of area residents, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 2003) at St. Anthony's Medical Center in Effingham.
Services were held Oct. 7 at the Wallace-Carroll Funeral Home in Herrick. Terry Walters officiated.
Burial was in Mound cemetery in Cowden.
Mr. Allen worked at Prairie Tank and Construction as a truck driver. A member of Roofer's Local 11 in Chicago, he retired in 1989 from his work as a roofer.
He was born Feb. 23, 1934, in Greenup, the son of Charles and Vera McMorris Allen. His parents are deceased.

Oct. 10, 1955, in Springfield, of Cowden; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Janice McMurphy of Coal City, Cathy and Bobby McMurphy of Panama City, Fla., Vera and Randell Walker of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Theresa and Jeff Gallup of Braceville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Danny and Loretta Allen of Panama City, Fla., Dennie Allen of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one sister, Mary Biggs of Lerna; one brother, Carl Allen of Charleston; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Four brothers and one sister are deceased.
Donald Bayless
Visitation for Donald L. Bayless Jr., 35, of Bourbonnais, will be from 4-8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. Masonic service at the Bourbonnais Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of God Worship Center in Bourbonnais, where he was a member. Rev. Ric Sexton will officiate.
Burial will be in the Abraham Lincoln National cemetery in Elwood.
Memorials may be made to the family wishes.
He died Monday (Oct. 6, 2003) at his home.
Mr. Bayless was a full-time student at Olivet Nazarene University. He also was a sales associate at Wal-Mart and a security guard at Armstrong World Industries.
He was born Feb. 28, 1968, in Portsmouth, Va., the son of Donald Sr. and Linda J. Ervin Bayless. His mother is deceased.
Surviving are his wife, the former Tammy Goad, whom he married
Aug. 16, 2002, at the Church of God Worship Center in Bourbonnais; one daughter, Khristina N. Bayless of Prosperity, S.C.; one stepson, Gavin Grizzle of Bourbonnais; father and stepmother, Donald and Marian Bayless of Deerfield, Ohio; one sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Tom Blalock of Conroe, Texas; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elvis and Paula Goad of Bourbonnais; and one sister-in-law, Tara Goad of Bourbonnais.
Mr. Bayless served in the U.S. Army.
He was an active member of the Free Masons, his church choir, and a Bible studies group.
He was a federal police officer for eight years.
Gerald Brown
CABERY -- Visitation for Gerald T. "Jerry" Brown, 60, of Big Sandy, Tenn., formerly of Cabery, will be from 1 p.m. Sunday until the 4 p.m. services at the Herscher Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes. Rev. Larry Allison will officiate.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley or to the donor's choice.
He died Tuesday (Oct. 7, 2003) in Big Sandy.
Mr. Brown was a former employee of A. O. Smith. He then refurbished homes and sold them, retiring in 2000.
He was born Feb. 27, 1943, in Richland Center, Wis.
Surviving are his wife, the former Debra Neideffer, whom he married
Sept. 4, 1993, in Cabery, of Big Sandy; one daughter, Karen Brown of Herscher; one stepson, Randell Brewington of Wilmington; mother and stepfather, Winnie and Merle Fritz of Herscher; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Kenda Pardy of Bourbonnais, Sue and Don McNamara of Frankfort, Wendy and Greg Smiley of Kankakee; two grandchildren, Jerry Lee Files and Cheyenne Files; four nieces and two nephews.
His father, Kenneth Brown; and one daughter, Melinda Brown, are deceased.
Mr. Brown was a member of the Camden Elks Club and the American Legion.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and Country music.
Brutlag, John
WOODWORTH -- Visitation for John G. Brutlag, 87, of Woodworth, will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Baier Funeral Home in Watseka, and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the 11 a.m. services at St. Paul's Church in Woodworth, where he was a member. Rev. James F. Ritter will officiate.
Burial will be in the Woodworth cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Church Memorial Fund or to the donor's choice.
He died Wednesday (Oct. 8, 2003) at the Gilman Nursing Pavilion.
Mr. Brutlag was a retired truck driver and mechanic.
He was born Feb. 22, 1916, in Henning, Minn., the son of John and Adeline Thiesekow Brutlag.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mildred Scheiwe, whom he married
March 9, 1940, in Illinois, of Woodworth; three sons and daughters-in-law, J. Dale and Karen Brutlag of Chicago, Dave and Reta Brutlag of Hudson, Joel and Carolyn Brutlag of Alexandria, Minn.; two daughters and one son-in-law, June Harvey of Hainesville, Kathy and Micheal McKinney Sr. of Crescent City; one sister, Magdelene Deschane of Henning, Minn.; one brother-in-law, Louis Schmutz of Whittier, Calif.; 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Three brothers and one sister are deceased.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Brutlag was an elder and a member of the Men's Club at his church.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Jacqueline Costenaro
HILL -- Jacqueline "Jackie" Costenaro, 68, of Crest Hill and the mother of area residents, died Friday (Oct. 3, 2003) at her home.
Services were held Oct. 7 at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home Chapel in Joliet.
Burial was in the Abraham Lincoln National cemetery in Elwood.
She was born May 23, 1935, the daughter of Vernon V. and Dorothy Resler Staley.
Surviving are her husband, John A. Costenaro of Crest Hill; one daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and John Magor of the Caribbean Island Saba; two sons and one daughter-in-law, John S. Costenaro of Coal City, Mike and Paul Costenaro of Braidwood; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
One sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Thomas Borello, are deceased.
She resided in the Lockport/Crest Hill area all her life.
LaVern Hahs

Visitation for LaVern Hahs, 82, of Bradley will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Bourbonnais Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. Rev. Derick Miller will officiate.
Burial will be in Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery.

He died Tuesday (Oct. 7, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center.
Mr. Hahs was well-known for his interest in athletics. He was a referee in the area for all sports for over 50 years and was one of the first members to be inducted into the Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. He played on the Bradley High School class of 1939 basketball team which went to the state tournament that year, the first team ever from Kankakee County to achieve the honor.
He was a former village trustee and clerk in Bourbonnais.
Mr. Hahs also was a crew leader for Commonwealth Edison, retiring after 37 years of service.
He was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Cypress, the son of Olen and Lesta Hogan Hahs.
Surviving are his wife, the former Doris Blair, whom he married
Sept. 3, 1950, in Kankakee, of Bradley; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Lee Hahs of McCormick, S.C., Jimmy Hahs of Bradley, Tom and Marsha Hahs of Bourbonnais, Mike and Tina Hahs of Kankakee; two daughters, Jeannie Banyas of Groveland, Fla., Patty Hahs of Springfield; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hahs was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army serving in the military police during World War II in the Persian Gulf.
He was a member of River Valley Christian Fellowship Church.
He also was a member of the Kankakee Moose Lodge and a starter at Bon Vivant Country Club.
Ronnie Prater

PIPER CITY -- Ronnie Cad Prater, 43, of Greenbrier HealthCare Center, Piper City, and a former 30-year resident of Kankakee, died Monday (Oct. 6, 2003).
There will be no services.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
Hager Memorial Homes, Chatsworth, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Hospice.
Mr. Prater had been a machinist at Damar.
He was born March 12, 1959 in Kankakee.
Surviving are his mother, Margie Gardner Prater of Chatsworth; one son, Jeremy Prater; three sisters, Peggy Wright of Bradley, Susan Jensen of Limestone, Edith Feaser of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Donnie Prater of Woodstock, Ga., Tracy Prater of Chatsworth; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
His father, Winford Prater, is deceased.
He enjoyed woodworking and hunting.
Irene Ramien
CULLOM -- Irene Mae Ramien, 99, of Cullom, died Wednesday (Oct. 8, 2003) in Livingston Manor, rural Pontiac, where she had been a resident since Sept. 30, 2003.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the 11:30 a.m. services Friday at Cullom United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Rev. Herb Thompson will officiate.
Burial will be in West Lawn cemetery, Cullom.
Memorials may be made to the Cullom United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are by the Harris-Martin-Burke Funeral Home in Cullom.
She was born July 16, 1904, in Mona Township, Ford County, the daughter of Elbert and Emma Dancer Hills.
For many years she lived in Cooksville with her husband while he operated the grain elevator there. They moved back to Cullom in the late 1950s.
Her husband, Arthur F. Ramien, died Sept. 16, 1977.
Survivors are three nieces, Sandra Gunther of rural Cullom, Beverly (LaVerne) Schwark of Herscher, Rosemary Hills of Cullom; two nephews, Howard (Judy) Haag of Manistee, Mich., George (Martha) Hills of rural Kempton; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Three brothers, Howard, Elbert and Russell Hills; one sister, Maxine Haag; and one nephew, Paul Hills, are deceased.
She was a 1923 graduate of Cullom High School.
Mrs. Ramien was a member of the United Methodist Women.
