Edward Maher

Visitation for Edward Maher, 82, of Kankakee, will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Rose of Lima Church in Kankakee, where he was a member. Rev. Charles Wheeler will officiate. Burial will be in Ashkum cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family's wishes. Mr. Maher died Saturday (Oct. 4, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center. He was born Jan. 2, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Lincoln E. and Freeda S. Larson Maher. Surviving are his wife, the former Vivian V. Flageole, whom he married Aug. 19, 1950 at Assumption Catholic Church in Ashkum, of Kankakee; one son and daughter-in-law Ed and Debbie Maher of Kankakee; one daughter and son-in-law Mary Ellen (Maher) Sorensen and Chris Sorensen of Chicago; two brothers and sisters-in-law Robert and Edyth Maher of Kankakee and Phil and Alvina Maher of South Dakota; and five grandchildren, Ryan Maher, Teresa Maher, Jose E. deLeon-Maher, CJ Sorensen and Erica Sorensen. A brother, Lincoln Maher, is deceased. Mr. Maher was a graduate of Hirsch High School in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Navy as a photographer for the ship. Mr. Maher was in appliance sales for the Sears Corporation for 22 years before retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Kankakee Valley Boat Club, a volunteer at Riverside Medical Center and enjoyed cooking, computers and photography.

Thelma Striegel

Services for Thelma Pearl Striegel, 91, of Kankakee, were held Oct. 3, 2003 at Trinity United Methodist Church. Rev. Martin Gutzmer officiated. Mrs. Striegel died Sept. 29, 2003. Burial was in the Aroma Park cemetery. Pallbearers were David Klopfenstein, Edward Zopf, Blake Palmateer, Carl Haslett, Bill Bukowski and Gary Buckman.

Margaret Rudin

CISSNA PARK -- Services for Margaret N. Rudin, 94, of Cissna Park, were held Oct. 3, 2003, at the Apostolic Christian Church in Cissna Park. Ministers of the church officiated. Mrs. Rudin died Sept. 30, 2003. Burial was in Apostolic Christian cemetery in Cissna Park. Pallbearers were Craig, Gerald, Charles, Gary, Marty and Arlyn Rudin.

Paulette Newman

Services for Paulette Elizabeth Newman, 53, of Richfield, Minn., formerly of Kankakee, were held Oct. 2, 2003, at Lax Mortuary, Kankakee. Rev. Lawrence Coleman officiated. Mrs. Newman died Sept. 24, 2003. Burial was in Mound Grove Gardens cemetery. Pallbearers were Charles Ewing, Darrick Brooks, Benyard Jones, Marlon and David Hetherington, and Kevin Amphy.

Pedro Ochoa

ONARGA -- Pedro Ochoa, 46, of Onarga, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 2003) at Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Baier Funeral Home in Watseka, where services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. Joseph Estrada will officiate. Burial will be in Onarga cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family or the donor's choice. Mr. Ochoa was born Dec. 1, 1956 in Casacauran, Mexico, the son of Guadalupe and Raquel Camargo Ochoa. Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Alma Majia Ochoa of Onarga; two sons, Pedro and Juan Ochoa, both at home; two daughters, Sarah and Victoria Ochoa, both at home; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Ezequiel and Yolanda Ochoa, Ramon and Laura Ochoa, Jesus and Judy Ochoa, all of Gilman, Guadalupe Jr. and Teresa Ochoa of Onarga, Jose Luis and Juanita Ochoa of Piper City, Oliverio and Araceli Ochoa of Kankakee; five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Martha Ochoa and special friend Salv Carneora of Kankakee, Rafaela and Rene Gaytan, Maria Elena Ochoa, all of Gilman, Raquel and David Alvarez, Coquie Ochoa, all of Onarga; and many nieces and nephews. Two brothers are deceased. Mr. Ochoa was a laborer and enjoyed fishing.

Floyd Smith

MOMENCE -- Floyd H. Smith, 79, of Momence, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 2003) at his home. Visitation will be 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Cotter Funeral Home in Momence. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Momence, where he was a member. Rev. Vern Arseneau will officiate. Burial with military rites by the Momence Honor Guard will be in St. Patrick cemetery in Momence. Mr. Smith was born March 22, 1924 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the son of Floyd and Catherine O'Connor Smith. Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth Lorraine Martin, whom he married June 15, 1946 in Roseland, of Momence; one daughter and son-in-law, Rita K. and John Crawford of Momence; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Floyd J. Smith of Denver, Colo., John F. and Cindy Smith of Pine Dale, Wyo., Louis J. and Susan Smith, Thomas E. and Sharon Smith, all of Bourbonnais; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. One daughter and a great-grandson are deceased. Mr. Smith served during World War II in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired truck driver for Polk Bros. in Chicago and the Kansas City Freight Lines, and was a union steward for the Chicago Truck Drivers Union.

Hunter Tvrz

STREATOR -- Hunter Daniel Tvrz, 6, of Streator, died suddenly Saturday (Oct. 4, 2003) at Morris Hospital. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Tuesday until the 3 p.m. service at R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes Ltd., Braidwood Chapel. Burial will be in Braceville-Gardner cemetery in Braceville. Pallbearers will be Danny and Brian Tvrz, Ricky Hilger and Ray Page. A memorial fund in Hunter's name has been set up at Standard Bank with donation cans located in local businesses. Hunter was born Aug. 4, 1997 in Kankakee, the son of Ronald Charles and Kimberly Rae Tkachik Tvrz. Surviving are his mother of Streator; father of Minooka; three brothers, Sammy Rash of Glendale, Ariz., Nathan Tvrz of Dwight, Justice Tvrz of Streator; grandparents, Don and Cheryl Tvrz of Braceville, Diana Snow of Ransom, Dennis and Alice Tkachik of Gardner, Colleen and Steve Frost of Virginia; great-grandmother, Cleo Corneglio of South Wilmington, Doris Kelly of Ottawa; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Larry Burkett

KANGLEY -- Larry Lee Burkett, 57, of Kangley and the brother of area residents, died Monday (Sept. 29, 2003) at his home. Visitation will be from 10-10:30 a.m. Friday at the Winterrowd-Hagi Funeral Home in Streator. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Braceville cemetery, Gardner. Surviving are two daughters, Sheila Owens of Metamora, Dawn Cross of Streator; two sons, Larry Cross and Adam Cross, both of Missouri; one brother, Dale Burkett of Streator; three sisters, Judy Fowler and Kathleen Burkett, both of Kankakee, Karen Sue Zalda of Dwight; and five grandchildren.

Mary Lou Davis

Mary Lou Davis, 60, of Kankakee, died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital. Arrangements are pending at the Jones Funeral Home.

Gerald Keeley

WILMINGTON -- Gerald "Jerry" Keeley, 61, of Plymouth, Ind., formerly of Wilmington, died Friday (Sept. 26, 2003) at his home, where he had lived for the past 12 years. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Saturday until the 3 p.m. services at the Freitag Funeral Home in Wilmington. Burial will be in the Oakwood cemetery in Wilmington. Mr. Keeley was employed in labor and industrial relations, working mostly for Uniroyal, Inc. He spent four years at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant in Joliet; 4 1/2 years at the Eau Claire Tire Plant in Eau Claire, Wis. and 15 years at the Newport Army Ammuniton Plant in Newport, Ind. He was born March 19, 1942, in Joliet, the son of Francis "Cheddy" and Blanche Dack Keeley. His parents are deceased. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Karoline and Doug Kellam of Hinsdale; two stepgranddaughters; former wife, Diana (Kinnard) Kelley of Naperville; one sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Rick Danley of Elgin; two nieces and one nephew; and ex-wife, Muriel Keeley of Wisconsin. He grew up in Wilmington. He attended Milliken University, where he was a member of TKE Fraternity and later graduated from Parsons College in Iowa. While in college, Mr. Keeley began working with the Republican Party on the "Goldwater for President campaign." He remained active with the party, working behind the scenes in many local campaigns for the next 40 years.

Gregg Kruse

Gregg C. Kruse, 43, of Kankakee, died Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Thursday until the 3 p.m. services at the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes. Rev. Rick Sexton will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded. Memorials may be made to the family. Mr. Kruse worked for 25 years as a retailer for Albertsons Jewel-Osco in Homewood. He was born Aug. 6, 1960, in Knox, Ind., the son of Leon Paul and Myra Jane Bergman Kruse. His father died Jan. 21, 1983. Surviving besides his mother of Kankakee are three brothers and one sister-in-law, Richard P. and Carol Kruse of Glendale, Ariz., James E. Kruse of Kankakee, John M. Kruse of Oshkosh, Wis.; one niece, Jeanna Kruse of Charlotte, N.C.; four nephews, Michael Kruse of Las Vegas, Nev., Neil Kruse of Glendale, Ariz., Nicholas Kruse of Parker, Colo., Nathan Kruse of Glendale, Ariz.; and several aunts and uncles. Mr. Kruse served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the Christian faith and enjoyed music.

Marilyn Pontious

Marilyn Pontious, 53, of Bradley, died today (Oct. 1, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee. Arrangements are pending at the Schreffler Funeral Homes.

Mary Reid
retired school cook supervisor

MILFORD -- Mary L. Reid, 82, of Milford, died Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) at Watseka Health Care Center. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. today at the Milford Christian Church, where she was a member. Revs. Neil Larimore and Gary Milton officiated. Cremation rites were accorded. Memorials may be made to the Milford Christian Church. Baier Funeral Home in Watseka is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Reid was a retired school cook supervisor. She was born July 10, 1921, in Downs, the daughter of George and Blanche Lain Thing. Her husband, Kermit Reid, whom she married June 24, 1944, in Savoy, died in 1995. Surviving are one sister, Doris Thing of Watseka; one brother-in-law, Jack Hancock of Milford; and many nieces and nephews. One sister is deceased. She enjoyed cooking.

Margaret Rudin

She died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) at Fairview Haven Nursing Home. Mrs. Rudin was a housekeeper in Chicago and Peoria for many years. She was born March 23, 1909, in Cissna Park, the daughter of Joseph and Anna Markwalder Rudin. Surviving are three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Lester Rudin of Roanoke, Benjamin and Evelyn Rudin of Cissna Park, Al and Dorothy Rudin of Hoopeston; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lucille and David Wagner and Anna Marie Reutter, all of Gridley; and several nieces and nephews. Three brothers and one sister are deceased. She enjoyed baking and sewing.

Mrs. Striegel had worked in the retail store at Bear Brand, was a secretary at Shapiro Developmental Center and had managed Yates-Orrison Funeral Home. She was born May 11, 1912, in Leggtown, the daughter of Edgar Ray and Callie Edith Kibbons Legg. Her first husband, Morrie Yates, whom she married in 1939, died in 1960. She then married Lawrence B. Striegel Nov. 18, 1961. He died April 23, 1986. Surviving are one daughter, Mary Zopf of Bourbonnais; one sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Gerald Buckman of Kankakee; one grandson, Ed Zopf of Kankakee, and one granddaughter, Beth and Dave Klopfenstein of Brooklyn, N.Y. One son-in-law, Jim Zopf; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Elmo and William Hasslett, Mae and Sam Ray, Alta and Lesley Styck and an infant, Doris Legg, are deceased. Mrs. Striegel was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Woman's Club of Kankakee, several bridge clubs and was very active in the Women's Circle at her church.

Visitation for Patricia A. Victor, 71, of Bradley, will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais and from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Foster Funeral Home in Wolcott, Ind. Inurnment services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Dobbins cemetery, Wolcott, Ind. Rev. James Childress will officiate. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley. She died Monday (Sept. 29, 2003). Mrs. Victor worked as a secretary at Bradley West Elementary School, retiring after 31 years of service. She was born Oct. 6, 1931, in Wolcott, Ind., the daughter of Victor and Mae A. Norwood English. Her father is deceased. Surviving are her husband, Larry G. Victor, whom she married Jan. 24, 1954, in Goodland, Ind., of Bradley; two sons, David R. Victor and dear friend, Karen Sierzega of Hoffman Estates, Paul E. Victor of Fallbrook Calif. and family; her mother of Kankakee; and one sister, Janet E. Gracey of New York, N.Y. She was a graduate of Wolcott High School. Mrs. Victor was a member of the Kankakee-Iroquois Education Professional Association and Wesley United Methodist Church. She enjoyed golfing and going to Las Vegas.
