Roberta Mitchell
ELKHART, Ind. -- Roberta Joan Mitchell, 64, of Elkhart, Ind., and the wife of a former Kankakee resident, died Wednesday (July 24, 2002) at her home after an extended illness.
Services were held July 27 at the Winding Waters Brethren Church. Revs. Jeffrey T. Lewis and Tom Miller officiated.
Burial was in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.
Memorials may be made to Winding Waters Brethren Church or to Hospice of Elkhart County.
She was born Nov. 16, 1937, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the daughter of Archie N. and Nevelle Bouma Bittner.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Mitchell, whom she married
March 31, 1956; three daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Richard Roberts of Fresno, Calif., Denise and Ron Scheetz of Elkhart, Debbie and Tom DeShone of South Bend; two sons and one daughter-in-law, David M. and Marcy Mitchell of South Bend, Joseph W. Mitchell of Elkhart; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Marietta Altman of Chandler, Ariz., Judy O'Connor of Burleson, Texas, Barbara Bittner of Kelso, Wash., and Sharleen and Galen McFee of Goshen; one brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Gloria Bittner of Hopkinsville, Ky.
One sister, Shirley Huguenin, is deceased.
Mrs. Mitchell attended Winding Water Brethren Church.
She collected Walt Disney memorabilia.
Ruth Rabe
CRESCENT CITY -- Ruth Kathleen Rabe, 80, of Crescent City, and a resident of the Gilman Nursing Pavilion, died Sunday (July 28, 2002) at Iroquois Memorial Hospital, Watseka.
There will be no visitation.
Cremation rites were accorded.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are by the Redenius Funeral Home, Gilman.
She was born May 12, 1922, in Benton, the daughter of Burrell and Mary Fisher Ross.
Her husband, Elmer Rabe, is deceased.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Newton and Helen Rabe of California, David and Shannon Rabe of Idaho, Wayne and Margaret Rabe of Kankakee; one daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Ernie Curtis of Gilman; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Murriel Tucker of Jackson, Tenn.
One grandchild, Terri Jo Curtis, is deceased.
Mrs. Rabe was of the Mormon faith.
She enjoyed baking.
Sarah Reitz

PAXTON -- Sarah Mae Reitz, 98, of Paxton, formerly of Loda, died Monday (July 29, 2002) at the Illinois Knights Templar Home in Paxton where she had been a resident four years.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Ford-Baier Funeral Home, Paxton, and from 10 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. services at the First United Methodist Church, Paxton, where she was a member. Rev. Chet Travis will officiate.
Burial will be in the Melvin cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Paxton, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Mrs. Reitz taught in rural schools for 17 years, 15 of these were in Ford County and two in Iroquois County. She and her husband farmed in Wall Township moving to Paxton Jan. 4, 1967.
She was born Oct. 11, 1903, in Wall Township, Loda, the daughter of John Sidney and Sarah E. Sharp Kenney.
Her husband, William Reitz, whom she married
Aug. 8, 1930, in Saunemin, died July 14, 1984.
Surviving are one stepdaughter, Arlene Potts of Bradley; several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ferne Ryan of Paxton, Frances Martz of Dayton, Ohio; and one brother, Wesley Kenney of Normal.
Five brothers and three sisters are deceased.
She was a 1924 graduate of Paxton High School and attended Normal Teachers College.
She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Anti-Can't class, the Faith Circle and the Pleasant View Club. She also was a charter member of the Governor Thomas Ford Chapter DAR and the Paxton Day Home Extension.
Mrs. Reitz was known as the "peanut brittle lady'' because she made hundreds of pounds of peanut brittle for the church bazaar.
She enjoyed gardening.
Lucille Bernier
CLIFTON -- A funeral Mass for Lucille M. Bernier, 87, a lifelong Clifton-Chebanse resident, was celebrated July 27 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Clifton. Rev. Lee Bacchi officiated.
Mrs. Bernier died July 24, 2002.
Burial was in Assumption cemetery, Ashkum.
Lucy Anna Fleming
WATSEKA -- Services for Lucy Anna Fleming, 90, of Watseka, were held July 29 at the First United Methodist Church, watseka. Joe Scheets officiated.
Mrs. Fleming died July 24, 2002.
Burial was in Flesher cemetery, Crescent City. Pallbearers were Michael Russell, Justin Clemens, Tom Weber, Warren Hanson, Michael Weber and Dick Arie.
Helene Konecki
WATSEKA -- A funeral Mass for Helene C. Konecki, 84, of Watseka, was celebrated July 29 at St. Edmund's Catholic Church, Watseka. Rev. Lee Ryan officiated.
Mrs. Konecki died July 26, 2002.
Burial was in Iroquois Memorial Park cemetery, Watseka. Pallbearers were Adam Przyborowski, John Garvey, Thomas Konecki, Jack Swan, Anthony Shuper and James L. Swartz.
Lorraine Fanthorpe
Services for Lorraine A. Fanthorpe, 85, of Kankakee, were held July 29 at St. Mark United Methodist Church. Rev. Kathy Sweet officiated.
Mrs. Fanthorpe died July 26, 2002.
Cremation rites were accorded by Hertz-Thoma Crematory, Kankakee. Pallbearers were Dan, John, Tom, Mike, Dave and Stefan Fanthorpe.
Shirley Weibel
WILMINGTON -- Shirley Weibel, 73, of Wilmington, died Sunday (July 28, 2002) at her home.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. Wednesday until the 7 p.m. services at the Freitag Funeral Home, Wilmington.
Cremation rites will be accorded after the service.
Memorials may be made to the Joliet Area Community Hospice.
She was born Sept. 16, 1928, in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Norman and Emma Berkley Mac Donald.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years, William W. Weibel; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara Weibel of North Carolina, Linda and Steven Fritz, Nancy and Todd Schneider, all of Channahon; and three gransddaughters.
One brother, Robert Mac Donald, is deceased.
She enjoyed bingo, sewing and crafts.
William Beutien
Manteno State retiree
MANTENO -- Visitation for William Clare "Bill" Beutien, 85, of Manteno, will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. Masonic service at the Brown Funeral Home, Manteno, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Immanuel United Church of Christ, Peotone, where he was a member; or to cystic fibrosis.
He died Tuesday (Oct. 15, 2002) at his home.
Mr. Beutien retired from Manteno State Hospital where he had worked in the power house.
He was born Feb. 21, 1917, in Peotone, the son of Edward C. and Sophia M. Meyer Beutien.
Surviving are his wife, the former Frances I. Wulff, whom he married
March 20, 1948, in Kankakee, of Manteno; three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Pat Beutien of Carmel, Ind., William and Cindy Beutien of Manteno, Brian and Jean Beutien of Kankakee; one daughter and son-in-law, Karla Rae and Terry Stark of Manteno; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Two sisters, Eunice Stebbins and Orel Lamore Lehnig; and two brothers, Ellsworth "Babe" Beutien and Eldon "Pug" Beutien, are deceased.
Mr. Beutien had been a village trustee in the 60s. He was a member of the Peotone Masonic Lodge and the Manteno Sportsman's Club.
He had been a coach and umpired Little League.
He played baseball through his early 40's.
Thomas Crombar

Thomas E. Crombar, 81, of Kankakee, died Tuesday (Oct. 15, 2002) at Provena Our Lady of Victory Nursing Home, Bourbonnais.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. services at Asbury United Methodist Church, Kankakee, where he was a member. Rev. Leah Pogemiller will officiate.
Burial will be in the Abraham Lincoln National cemetery, Elwood.
Memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, Hospice of Kankakee Valley; the American Cancer Society; or to the donor's choice.
Fitzpatrick Funeral Directors, Kankakee, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Crombar had been a food service manager at Manteno State Hospital, retiring in 1980.
He was born Nov. 19, 1921, in Murphysboro, the son of Thomas and Maude Nickens Crombar.
Surviving are two stepdaughters, Shirley Pangle and Debbe Collins, both of Bourbonnais; three stepgrandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; special friend, Kathleen M. Massey; one uncle and two cousins.
One brother is deceased.
Mr. Crombar was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Aroma Park Masonic Lodge and the Kankakee American Legion Post 85.
