DWIGHT -- Betty Sarff, 73, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Dwight, died Aug. 5, 2003 in Canton. Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. Aug. 23 until the 3:30 p.m. memorial service at the Hager Memorial Home in Dwight. Rev. William Leppin will officiate. Surviving are her husband, Bennie L. Sarff; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Zane Kelleher of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Kathy Sarff of Canton, Terry and Debbie Sarff of Dwight; one sister, Colleen Whire of Kankakee; one brother, Anthony J. Senesca Jr. of Manteno; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Virginia Shipley
Virginia E. Shipley, 30, of Kankakee, died Wednesday (July 30, 2003) at her home. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until the 11 a.m. services at the Hertz-Thoma Funeral Chapel. Rev. Bjorn Lindgren will officiate. Burial will be private. Mrs. Shipley was a Tech II at Shapiro Developmental Center for several years. She was born April 28, 1973, in Kankakee. Nov. 27, 1998, in Kankakee; two sons, Francisco and Nathan, both at home; daughter, Andrea at home; her mother, Bernice Murphy of Missouri; two brothers, Bobby Legro of Kankakee, Jess Legro of Missouri; and two aunts of Bradley. Her father, Rodney Legro, died Sept. 7, 1997.
David Surprenant
Vietnam War vet
Visitation for David L. Surprenant, 58, of Bradley, will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais, and from 1 p.m. Friday until the 2 p.m. services at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kankakee. Rev. Martin Gutzmer will officiate. Burial will be in the St. George cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family wishes. He died Tuesday (Aug. 12, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee. Mr. Surprenant was a former employee of Shapiro Developmental Center and Manteno State Hospital. He was born June 27, 1945, in Kankakee, the son of Donald and Geraldine Rappleyea Surprenant. His father is deceased. Surviving are one son, David Surprenant of Bradley; one daughter, Kathy Chicke of Bradley; his mother of Bradley; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Edie Surprenant, Donald and Virgie Surprenant, all of St. George; and three grandchildren. Mr. Surprenant served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed camping and sports, particularly the Dodgers since they were in Brooklyn.

GILMAN -- Services for Francis Lyle Shear, 78, of Gilman, were held Aug. 10 at the Redenius Funeral Home in Gilman. Rev. Rod Light officiated. Mr. Shear died Aug. 7, 2003. Inurnment was in Ridgeland Township cemetery, Thawville. Honorary pallbearers were Charlie Fancher, Raymond and Kevin Shear, Floyd Janny, Jason Hilgert and Rolland Jimison.

CISSNA PARK -- Services for Oliver "Bud" M. Schuette, 78, of Cissna Park, were held Aug. 12 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cissna Park. Rev. Terry Strom officiated. Mr. Schuette died Aug. 9, 2003. Burial, with military graveside rites by the Cissna Park American Legion, was in Trinity Lutheran cemetery, Cissna Park. Honorary pallbearers were Roger Hasselbring, Gary, Larry and Kerwyn Schuette, Larry Hand, Larry Williams, Barry Talley and Steve Pool.

CLIFTON -- A funeral Mass for Gene Dundas, 86, of Clifton, was celebrated Aug. 12 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clifton. Rev. Lee Bacchi officiated. Mr. Dundas died Aug. 8, 2003. Burial was in St. Peter's Catholic cemetery in Clifton. Pallbearers were Brock, Mike, John and Joe Dundas, Adam Jensen and Sean Hass.

WATSEKA -- Services for Brian Eugene Richardson, 30, of Watseka, were held Aug. 12 at the Baier Funeral Home in Watseka. Joseph Hughes officiated. Mr. Richardson died Aug. 8, 2003. MOMENCE -- Services for Alphonzo "Al" Hyman, 87, of Momence, were held Aug. 8 at Lax Mortuary in Kankakee. Rev. Chalmos Mitchell Sr. officiated. Mr. Hyman died Aug. 5, 2003. Cremation rites were accorded. Honorary pallbearers were James Gipson Sr., James Gipson Jr., James Gray and James Jeffery Gray.

WATSEKA -- Services for George W. Aupperle, 86, of Watseka, were held Aug. 13 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Watseka. Rev. Dean Bottjen officiated. Mr. Aupperle died Aug. 8, 2003. Burial, with military rites by the Watseka American Legion Post 23, the Watseka VFW Post 7450 and the Sheldon VFW Post 8631, was in the Sheldon cemetery. Pallbearers were Bob Harwood, Scott Heagle, David Brown, Jeff Heagle, Gale Kokenberger, Jacob Lowery, Jim Carlson and Don Akerly.

Raymond Barclay will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Zion cemetery in Flanagan. Memorials may be made to the family wishes. He died Thursday (Aug. 14, 2003) at the University of Chicago Hospital. Mr. Drager worked for Joyce 7-Up Company as a salesman for 35 years. He was born May 23, 1935, in Pontiac, the son of Orville and Amy Harris Drager. His parents are deceased. Aug. 1, 1964, in Flanagan, of Bradley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Cyndy Drager of Glendale Heights, Craig and Kimberly Drager of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Tina Beedle of Bradley and Kim and Michael Neal of Kankakee; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One son-in-law, David Beedle, is deceased. Mr. Drager was a member of the American Lutheran Church, the Elks and the Moose Lodge for over 40 years. He enjoyed golfing and morning coffee with his buddies.

BRAIDWOOD -- Robert Andrew Flagg, 17, of Braidwood, died Thursday (Aug. 14, 2003). Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Braidwood Chapel, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in the Abraham Lincoln National cemetery in Elwood. He was born Sept. 23, 1985 in Chicago. Surviving are his mother, Carol A. Mounce Mallas of Braidwood; his father, Robert K. Flagg of Wilmington; one brother, Edward Bilek of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Ellen Bilek of Braidwood and Dana Flagg of Iron River, Mich.; paternal grandparents, Art and Cora Flagg of Forest Park; aunts, uncles and cousins, including special cousin, Victoria Hierz of Coal City; and one niece. His maternal grandparents, Allan Mounce and Ruth Mounce Norman, are deceased. He enjoyed fishing and outdoor activities.

ONARGA -- A funeral Mass for Timothy J. Zirkle, 43, of Onarga, was celebrated Aug. 14 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilman. Rev. Lee Ryan officiated. Mr. Zirkle died Aug. 11, 2003. Burial was in the Onarga cemetery. Pallbearers were Dave Hines, Keith Richards, Tom Lamore, Don Gerdes, Mike Holt, Don Nichoalds, John Zirkle and Fidel Hurtado.

GREEN GARDEN TOWNSHIP -- Everette W. Heatherwick, 85, of Green Garden Township, died Thursday (Aug. 14, 2003) at Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Joliet. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Forsythe Funeral Home, 507 S. State St., Manhattan, and from 9:30 a.m. Monday until the 10 a.m. services at the Green Garden United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Rev. Penny Hoffman will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Green Garden United Methodist Church, the Threshermen Association or to the Joliet Area Hospice. Mr. Heatherwick was employed by Electro Motive in LaGrange and later at the Buda Co. in Harvey. He farmed for 11 years in Homer Township, before becoming an Alice Chalmers farm equipment dealer in Green Garden for 30 years. He was born in 1917, in Orland Township, the son of William and Gertrude Heatherwick. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Hazel Smith Heatherwick; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Alan and Beverly Heatherwick of Frankfort, Lane and Linda Heatherwick of Peotone, Kent Heatherwick of Byron; five grandchildren, one great-grandson and one stepgreat-granddaughter; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen and Art Rohde of Lockport; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Viola Heatherwick of Lemont; one brother-in-law, Peter (Letty) Smith of Bloomington; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Wagner of Lockport, Lila Ganser of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Heatherwick was a former 4-H leader of the Homer Husky Hustlers and former director of the Will County South Conservation District and the Will County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Will County Threshermen Association for over 20 years and a former member of the Illinois Flying Farmers.
