May 3, 1980 in Gilman, of Onarga; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Holly Zirkle of DelRey; one daughter, Beth Zirkle at home; one granddaughter, Skyla Zirkle of DelRey; his parents, Bob Sr. and Kay Zirkle of Onarga; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob Jr. and Karen Zirkle of Onarga, Mike and Cathy Zirkle of Prairieville, La., Tom and Kim Zirkle of Kankakee, Mark and Beth Zirkle of Gilman; and his grandmother, Mary Zirkle of Gilman. One sister, Mary Zirkle, is deceased. Mr. Zirkle worked at Armstrong World Industries in Kankakee, and was a member of the 25-Year Club. He was an avid sportsman who loved deer hunting, mushroom hunting and going shrimping. He was a graduate of Onarga High School. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather.

DWIGHT -- Leona K. Grieff, 81, of Dwight, died Tuesday (Aug. 5, 2003) at Heritage Manor in Dwight. Private services will be held. Burial will be in Goodfarm cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Heritage Manor Activities Fund. Hager Memorial Home in Dwight is in charge of arrangements. Ms. Grieff had worked at N&J; Restaurant and the Harvest Table. She was born Sept. 21, 1921, in Reddick, the daughter of Charles and Amanda Nielsen Liepold Grieff. Surviving are one half-brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Marilyn Grieff of Gardner. Ms. Grieff was a graduate of Dwight High School. She enjoyed social activities at Heritage Manor.

ST. ANNE -- Mel Hay, 71, of St. Anne, died Saturday (Aug. 2, 2003) at his home. There will be no visitation. Memorials services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Union Baptist Church in Hopkins Park. Rev. Jackson will officiate. Private burial services were held in the Momence cemetery. Cotter Funeral Home, Momence, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hay had served as a longtime Pembroke Township road commissioner. He also was a Republican Precinct Committeeman and president of the Board of Trustees of the Pembroke Fire Protection District. He was born Feb. 3, 1932, in Eaton, Tenn., the son of Dewey and Lorena Morgan Hay. Surviving are five sons and four daughters-in-law, Mel and Donna Davis of Floresville, Texas, Dennis and Molly Hay of Blytheville, Ark., Alan Smith of St. Anne, Melreo and Alexandra Hay of Lowell, Ind., Michael Hughes and Carol Garret of St. Anne; three daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Randy Goff of Blytheville, Ark., Zaneta Hay-Simpkins and Marion Simpkins of St. Anne, Tynka and Shawn Bonds of Oklahoma City, Okla.; seven stepchildren, Denise Barnes, Diane and Maimi Hughes of Montgomery, Ala., Dion Hughes of Grand Rapids, Mich., Waltmetur, Myzekiel and Zuri Taylor, all of St. Anne; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Paul and Vanita Hay, Connie and Naomie Hay, all of Blytheville, Ark., Mack Hay of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Joe Nedham of Blytheville, Ark.; 25 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Bruce and Wallace Hay, are deceased. He was a member of the Forest Valley Community Church. He enjoyed attending football games.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Onarga United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Rev. Charles Shelquist will officiate. Burial will be held at a later date in Onarga cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Developmental Services Center or to the Chorale Choir Group in Champaign. Mr. Ireland was a financial officer. He was a former CFO for Carle Foundation Hospital and was currently employed at Engineering and Research International in Savoy. He had also worked at the Developmental Services Center. He was born June 2, 1946, in Watseka, the son of Herbert Orin and Mary L. Austin Ireland. Surviving are two sons, Sean Ireland of Champaign, Brendan Ireland of Boulder, Colo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Chris Hegedus of Falls Church, Va.; his parents of Onarga; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marin and Joe Mattingly of Champaign, Jeanne and Mark Weiss of Oak Forest; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Ireland was a member and administrator of the Chorale Choir Group in Champaign.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Fedde-Helfrich Chapel in Peotone, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Michael Ginter will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in Evergreen Park. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross or to the Peotone Paramedics. Mrs. Lamphear was a retired Illinois Bell information operator. She was born Oct. 6, 1918, in Harvey, the daughter of Richard and Mary Scholem Zaideman. Her husband, Robert L. Lamphear, died in 1982. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Harvey Goodwine of Peotone; one daughter-in-law, Jeanette Lamphear Fuller of Blue Island; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Goodwine and David Goodwine, both of Manteno, Sandi Lamphear and Jim Lamphear, both of St. Anne; and one brother, Fred Zaideman of Tucumcari, N.M. One son, Robert Lamphear; and one brother, Richard Zaideman, are deceased. She was a member of the Illinois Bell Telephone Pioneers.

Mr. Lanie was a former manager at Taco John's in Bourbonnais, Old Country Buffet and Bonanza Restaurant. He was born April 23, 1960, in Kankakee, the son of Ronald and Nancy Schweizer Lanie. Surviving are two daughters, Taylor Lanie and Lauren Lanie, both of Bourbonnais; his mother of Bradley; father and stepmother, Ronald and Robin Lanie of Elkhart, Ind.; one sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Michael Williams of Bradley; two brothers, Ronald Lanie Jr. of Bradley, Mark Lanie of Bloomington, Ind.; former wife, Cindy Wagner of Bourbonnais; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He enjoyed golf, stock car races and playing cards.

Memorials may be made to the trauma center at Olympia Fields Hospital or to the Grant Park United Methodist Church. Mrs. Pike died Sunday (Aug. 3, 2003) at St. James Hospital Olympia Fields campus. She was born April 9, 1901, in Taylor County, Ky., the daughter of Levi Duvalt and America Elizabeth Burge Keen. Her husband, Robert J. Pike, whom she married
April 21, 1919, in Jeffersonville, Ind., died April 12, 1985. Surviving are three daughters and four sons-in-law, Ruth and John Gericke of Matteson, Patricia and Ernest Meyer of Austin, Texas, Joan and Dean Preston of Huntsville, Ala., Peter Rasmussen of Pewaukie, Wis.; two daughters-in-law, Audrey Pike of Austin, Texas, Eleanor Pike of Alexandria, Va.; 15 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Three daughters, Josephine Rasmussen, Mary Magdalene Pike and Sylvia Kretz; three sons, Pvt. Willard E. Pike, who died in World War II, Command Sgt. Major Victor M. Pike and Garnett H. Pike; four sisters, Bessie, Martha, Mattie and Julia; and five brothers, Richard, Luther, Johnny, Jessie and David Keen, are deceased. Mrs. Pike was affiliated with the Grant Park United Methodist Church and a member of the Gold Star Mothers at the Grant Park American Legion Star Post 295.

CARBONDALE -- Clinton Vaught, 88, of Carbondale, formerly of Joliet and Manhattan, and a relative of area residents, died Sunday (Aug. 3, 2003) at his home. In accordance with his wishes, his body has been donated to medical science. A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Carbondale, where he was a member. Rev. K. Stephen Combs and Charles Massberger officiated. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 302 W. Mr. Vaught retired after 30 years as superintendent of the sheet metal industry at Stateville Penitentiary in Joliet. He then retired after seven years from Folger Adams in Joliet as fabrication shop supervisor. He was born July 31, 1915, in Enfield, the son of Thomas and Pearl Austin Vaught. His first wife, the former Selma Fulkerson, died May 7, 1985. Surviving are his wife, the former Georgia Joanne Robinson; one daughter and son-in-law, Simone and John Lovell Jr. of Morris; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law; three grandchildren and seven stepgrandchildren, including Amy Hibbard and Kevin Lovell, both of Coal City and Jennifer Markle of Braidwood; three great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Four brothers and one sister are deceased. Mr. Vaught was a member of the Masonic Fraternity of Lockport Lodge 538.

MORRIS -- Thomas E. West, 92, of Morris, the former publisher of the Morris Daily Herald for 25 years, died Monday (Aug. 4, 2003) at the River Shores Nursing Home in Marseilles. "In the 30 years that I knew him, his character never wavered. He was always a gentleman, as both an employer and as a friend," said Jon Ringer, the newspaper's advertising manager and assistant publisher. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the Reeves Funeral Home in Morris. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morris. Rev. Robert Hoffenkamp will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Carmel cemetery in Morris. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception School Endowment Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice. He was born Feb. 17, 1911, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of William and Mae Donahue West. He began his career in the newspaper business at the age of 10, delivering papers for the Clinton Herald. After 19 years with the Clinton Herald, West moved on to the B.F. Shaw Printing Co., publishers of the Dixon Evening Telegraph. When B.F. Shaw Printing purchased the Morris Daily Herald in 1953 from L.B. Sackett, West was named publisher. When West retired in 1977, he was replaced by his son Tim, who still serves as publisher of the newspaper. Doug Harrington, the newspaper's press foreman, said West would often stop by on Saturday to see how operations were going. "If we were having a rough day, he would buy us lunch," Harrington said. "If he knew we were running late, or knew we were short handed, he would take off his suit jacket and work alongside us." His wife, the former Janet Wolf, whom he married

Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in Glasco, Kan. Mrs. Charbonneau taught a short time in a Cloud County school and later was employed by Kroehler Furniture Co. in Kankakee. April 7, 1948, in Bradley, died Sept. 27, 2000. Surviving are two daughters, Germaine Schwerman of Jamestown, Kan., Mary Bennett of Jackson, Mich.; six grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews. One sister, Evelyn LaRocque; and one brother, Edwin LaRocque, are deceased. She lived most of her life in the Concordia area. Mrs. Charbonneau was a member of the Altar Society at her church.
