Dewaine Nelson
ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. - Dewaine E. "Beano" Nelson, 70, a resident of Etowah County the past 15 years, and a former area resident, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2000).
Services were held Feb. 25 at the Faith Church, Attalla, Ala. Brother Blair Self officiated.
Burial was in Mt. Pisgah cemetery, Altoona, Ala. Pallbearers were family and friends of the Hughes family.
His parents, Elmer and Ruth Nelson, are deceased.
Surviving are his children, Susan Offill of Gilman, Thomas Nelson of Piper City, Martin P. Nelson of Onarga, Jody Hughes of Altoona, Ala., Diana Nelson of Pomona, Calif., Dewaine E. Nelson Jr. of Temple City, Calif., and Tammy Goddard of Arcadia, Calif.; one brother, Wilber Nelson of Burbank, Calif.; 14 granchildren and two great-grandchildren; and two nieces.
Mr. Nelson ran the Martins Gas Station in Gilman for many years. He detailed cars.
He enjoyed golfing.
Deceased is one grandson, Marc Nelson; and one brother.

Pauline Berndt
Pauline W. "Polly" Berndt, 89, of Kankakee, formerly of Evanston, died Saturday (Feb. 26, 2000) at Provena Heritage Village, Bourbonnais.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. Tuesday until the 7 p.m. services at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, Kankakee, and from 11:30 a.m. Wednesday until the noon committal service at Memorial Park cemetery, Grosse Point Road, Skokie.
Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
She was born Jan. 28, 1911, in Cabery, the daughter of Frank and Geraldine Whalen Wagner.
Her husband, Edward A. Berndt, whom she married Oct. 15, 1938, in Cabery, died in May 1979.
Surviving are one sister, Kay Lambert of Bourbonnais; one sister-in- law, Betty Wagner of Rochester, Minn.; several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Deceased are one sister, Elizabeth Lovell; and one brother, Francis Wagner.
Mrs. Berndt was a former employee of Illinois Bell Telephone.
She was a member of the Commission on Aging in Evanston.
She was a former member of St. John United Church of Christ, Kankakee, and of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Skokie.

Patricia Swisher
BRADLEY - Visitation for Patricia Ann Swisher, 58, of Bradley, will be from 1 p.m. Tuesday until the 3 p.m. services at the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes. Pastor Norm Weiss will officiate.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Mrs. Swisher died Friday (Feb. 25, 2000) at Riverside Medical Center.
She was born April 17, 1942 in Chicago, the daughter of Thomas and Catherine Bruen. Her father is deceased.
Surviving are her husband, Ralph D. Swisher, whom she married Feb. 5, 1972 in Chicago; four sons, John Lyons of Bradley, Mark and Donald Swisher, both of Bradley, and Michael Swisher of Texas; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sally and Kevin Hayes of N.Y., Michelle Swisher of Colo., and Alice and Darrow Green of Bradley; her mother of Bourbonnais; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Nancy and Joe Haug, and Marie Bruen, all of Bourbonnais, Helen and Danny Hardy of Matteson, and Mary and Steve Ricci of Bradley; five brothers and sisters- in-law, Michael and Alice Bruen of Flossmoor, John and Betty Bruen of Park Forest, James and Kathy Bruen, and Joseph and Jodi Bruen, all of Tenn., and Francis and Theresa Bruen of Kankakee; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Deceased is one nephew, Joey Haug.
Mrs. Swisher was a member of the Living Waters Church in Bradley.

Albert Brinkman, Jr.
GILMAN - Albert S. Brinkman Jr., 71, of Gilman, formerly of Ashkum, died Saturday (Feb. 26, 2000) at Miller Healthcare Center, Kankakee.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Knapp Funeral Home, Clifton, and from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the 10 a.m. services at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashkum, where he was a member. The Rev. Paul Uhl will officiate.
Burial will be in the Ashkum cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
He was born Dec. 30, 1928, in Ashkum, the son of Albert S. Sr. and Anna Marie Neeland Brinkman.
Surviving is one sister, Marie E. Klemit of Kankakee.
Deceased is one sister.
Mr. Brinkman was a retired farmer.

Mary Buckley
WATSEKA - Mary M. Buckley, 52, of Watseka, died Saturday (Feb. 26, 2000) at R.P. Roberts Friendship Home, Watseka.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the 10 a.m. services at the Segur-Knapp Funeral Home, Watseka. The Rev. Ron Ziemer will officiate.
Burial will be in the Sheldon cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the R.P. Roberts Friendship Home or to the Iroquois Memorial Hospice.
She was born Sept. 15, 1947, in Watseka, the daughter of Edgar A. and Dorothy Dean Drake Buckley.
Surviving are one brother, Alan Buckley of Crescent City; one brother-in-law, James Ewing of Roscoe; one nephew, Michael Buckley; one niece, Sheryl Hansen; and one great nephew and one great-niece.
Deceased are two sisters, Margery Ann Buckley and Linda Ewing.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sheldon where she served as an aide with the childrens Sunday School program.
Since 1973 she has resided at the R.P. Roberts Friendship Home except from 1990-1997 where she resided at the Paul Keller House in Sheldon.
She was employed in the dietary department at the A.R.C of Iroquois County for 20 years.
She was a member of the Resident Council at the Friendship Home and she volunteered over 300 hours at the Iroquois Memorial Hospital.
She enjoyed music, walking and collecting Elvis Presley memorabilia.

Esther Topliff
Visitation for Esther Christina "Toppie" Topliff, 96, formerly of Bradley, who died recently in Nebraska, will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bradley Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church.

Ezell Lee Sr.
Ezell Lee Sr., 77, of Otto Township, died today (Feb. 28, 2000) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital.
Arrangements are pending at the Jones Funeral Home, Kankakee.

Ernest Brown
Ernest Brown, 57, of Kankakee, died Friday (Feb. 25, 2000) at his home.
Arrangements are pending at the Jones Funeral Home.

Norma Regas
FREEMONT, Calif. - Norma Regas, 75, of Freemont, Calif., formerly of Kankakee, died Saturday (May 6, 2000) at her home.
Burial will be in California.
She was born June 18, 1924, in Kankakee, the daughter of Leo and Marie Beland.
Surviving are her husband, George Regas; one daughter and son- in-law, Julie and Terry Keller; one sister and brother- in-law, Marilyn and George Goodknecht of Limestone Township; two grandsons; and nieces and nephews.
Deceased are one sister and brother-in-law, Margery and Peter Palermo; and one nephew, Michael Palermo.
Mrs. Regas enjoyed cooking and reading.

Martha Turner
Services for Martha E. Turner, 81, of Kankakee, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where she was a member. The Rev. Charles Wheeler will officiate.
Burial will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are by the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes.
Mrs. Turner died Tuesday (May 2, 2000).
She was born Oct. 25, 1918, in Kankakee, the daughter of John Mitchell and Eva Victoria Spangler Allie.
Her husband, John ?Jub? Turner, whom she married in 1947 in Kankakee, is deceased.
Surviving are two brothers and one sister-in-law, Gerald and Geraldine Allie of Florida, Raymond Allie of New Mexico; one sister, Eva Wischnowski of Bourbonnais; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are six brothers, Clarence, Kenny, Jack, Bob, Gene and Herbert Allie; and one set of sibling twins, Gerald and Geraldine Allie.
Mrs. Turner was a past member of the Pigeon Club of Kankakee.
She loved gardening and crafts.

Nowlan Rathbun
formerly owned Rathbun Tap
FAIRBURY - Nowlan J. Rathbun, 73, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Chenoa and Fairbury, died Sunday (May 7, 2000) in Tucson after a long illness.
There will be no visitation or services.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Family Care, the ABATE program, Toys for Tots, or to a charity of the donor?s choice.
He and his wife were owners of Rathbun Tap in Fairbury from 1967- 1990 at which time they retired and sold the business to their son, Herb. Mr. Rathbun moved to Tucson in 1996 and continued to do light maintenance work on equipment for Sun Valley Masonry.
He was born Jan. 29, 1927, in Chenoa, the son of Herbert Joseph and Mary Loretta Kelso Rathbun.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mattie Lee Grove, whom he married May 6, 1948; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Herbert Joseph Rathbun of Fairbury, John Nowland Rathbun of Peoria, Terry Lee and Phyllis Rathbun of Tucson; one sister, Betty J. Rathbun of Alameda, Calif.; three grandchildren and one step-grandson.
He attended schools at Chenoa and Fairbury and also attended Gallagher?s Business School in Kankakee.
Mr. Rathbun was employed as a millwright at the Alameda Naval Shipyards in Alameda for three years; at E. Moser Garage in Fairbury for five years, and Honegger?s and Co. in Fairbury for 16 years. He also worked several years in construction. He was a charter member of the union negotiating team while employed at Honegger?s.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the American Legion.
He was a veteran of World War II serving three years with the Navy Air Corps.
He enjoyed playing cards and fishing.
