PEOTONE -- Louis Beno, 87, of Peotone, formerly of Harvey, died Tuesday (July 29, 2003) at HCR Manor Care of Kankakee. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Friday at the Fedde-Helfrich Chapel in Peotone, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the Peotone cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wendy Foss, Frank Dykstra, Bill Adams, Robert Foss, Jan Olsen and June Kincses. Memorials may be made to the Peotone United Methodist Church. Mr. Beno was a retired welder. He was born Nov. 16, 1915, in Hammond, Ind., the son of Peter and Frances Zelembra Beno. His wife, the former Lelah Brower, whom he married
Oct. 29, 1938, in Knox, Ind., died March 20, 1997. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and William Adams of Roland, Ark., Sandra and Robert Foss of Maumee, Ohio; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rosie Lawrence of Urbana. One grandson, Jeffrey S. Foss; seven brothers and four sisters, are deceased. Mr. Beno was a member of Local 472 and the Civilian Conservation Corps. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and woodworking. He was artistic, creative and could fix anything.

FAIRBURY -- Paige Yvonne Compton, infant daughter of Cory and Erica Mygatt Compton of Fairbury, and the granddaughter of Chatsworth residents, died Sunday (July 27, 2003) at OSF Saint James-John W. Albrecht Medical Center in Pontiac. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Forrest cemetery. Rev. Thomas Kreiger will officiate. Memorials may be made to the family. Hager Memorial Home in Forrest is in charge of arrangements. She was born July 27, 2003 in Pontiac. Surviving besides her parents are paternal grandparents, Donna Compton of Streator, Jim and Sue Starks of Chatsworth; maternal grandparents, John and Dawn Bradley of Forrest; great-grandparents, Wilma Starks of Sandwich, Oneta Haab and Orval and Ilse Mygatt, all of Forrest. Her paternal grandfather, Trever Mygatt; and maternal great-grandfather, Virgil Haab, are deceased. The family was affiliated with the Lutheran church.

WATSEKA -- Ronald Corke, 50, of Watseka, a local businessman, financial consultant and former city alderman, died Monday (July 28, 2003) at Carle Hospital in Urbana. Mr. Corke served as a Watseka alderman from 1999 until he resigned to operate his financial consulting business, Ron Corke & Associates of Watseka, in 2002. He served as finance chairman from 2001 until his resignation. Mr. Corke founded Community Rescue Ambulance Service in 1989. He sold the business to Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka in 1997 but remained its director. He also was an economic developer. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. Friday until the 11 a.m. services at the Baier Funeral Home in Watseka. Joe Scheets will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery in Watseka. Memorials may be made to the trust fund for his daughter Taylor or to the donor's choice. MARTINTON -- Chester W. Schreib, 84, of Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Martinton, died Saturday (July 26, 2003). He was born Feb. 8, 1919, to Charles F. and Georgia Bovie Schreib. He was the fourth of five children born and raised on the family-owned farm in Martinton. Chester and his family continued on to own and operate the farm for more than 40 years. He also worked for more than 15 years with the State of Illinois, Iroquois County Highway Department before retiring as a supervisor and moving to Zephyrhills in 1982. While in Illinois, memberships included the United Church of Christ in Papineau and the Moose Lodge in Kankakee. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Phyllis of Zephyrhills; daughter, Lonnie Hufham of Zephyrhills; son and daughter-in-law, Clark and Nancy Schreib of Warwick, R.I.; five grandchildren, Michael, Heather, Christopher, David and Timothy; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Crystal; sister, Arilla Hubert of Donovan; and brother, Charles Schreib Jr. of Edwardsville. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Friday until the 1 p.m. services at the Clancy-Gernon-Houk Funeral Home in St. Anne. Rev. Bruce Salter will officiate. Burial will be in Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery. He had lived in Monee, moved to Glen Allen, Mo., in 1965, returned to Beecher in 1984 and had lived in Dexter, Mo., for the past two years. Visitaton will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Fedde-Helfrich Chapel in Peotone. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Monee, where he was a member. Rev. Frank L. Hoss will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's United Church of Christ cemetery, Monee. Mr. Vehrs was a retired farmer and mechanic. He was born Oct. 1, 1918, in Monee, the son of Edward Henry and Minnie L. Lesnow Vehrs. Surviving are his wife, the former Verna Seggebruch, whom he married

Seabaugh of Dexter, Mo.; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Marguerite Batterman of Crete; and two brothers, Wayne Vehrs of Glen Flora, Wis. and Clemens Vehrs of Chicago Heights. Three brothers, Wallace, Herschel and Jerome Vehrs; five sisters, Gertrude Muehring, Mildred Kvasnicka, Imogene Parzygnot, Avanell Vehrs and Joann Bowen, are deceased. Mr. Wasmer retired in 1982 from Kelsey-Hayes (an automotive parts manufacturer) in Romulus, Mich., after 43 years of service. He was born Oct. 29, 1916, in Gilman. His first wife, Delores, is deceased. Surviving are his wife, Stella; one daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Donald Prochot of Wheaton, Ill.; one daughter-in-law, Bette Jane Wasmer of Portland, Ore.; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Mark and Lorrie Johnsen of Commerce Township, Mich.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One son, Bill, is deceased. He was a resident of Plymouth, Mich., for 32 years and a former resident of Detroit. Mr. Wasmer graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor of science degree in engineering. He was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and St. Kenneth Parish in Plymouth, Mich. He loved gardening, boating and his cottage on Lake St. Clair.

STOCK RIDGE, Ga. -- Melvin N. Williams, 64, of Stock Ridge, Ga., formerly of Sun River Terrace, died July 3, 2003. A memorial service wil be held 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Sun River Terrace, where he was a member. Rev. Alex T. Bond will officiate. Mr. Williams had worked at the Agar Meat Co. in Momence until its closing. He later worked at General Foods/Quaker Oats until his illness in 1993. Surviving are five children, Melva Williams, Berwyn Williams, Vanessa Jackson, Swift Alice Lester and Eliss Williams; four brothers, Alvin, Marvin, Kenneth and Sidney Williams; three sisters, Rev. Sylvia D. Smith, Ruby Williams and Barbara Williams; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. His parents, grandparents, four brothers, one sister, one niece and one nephew, are deceased. He enjoyed the Chicago Cubs and playing cards.

May 15, 1976, in Monticello; two sons, Nicholas L. and Benjamin C. Allen, both of Sullivan; one daughter, Jennifer M. Allen of Monticello; his father; three brothers, Steve Allen of Sherman, Stan Allen of Florida, Sid Allen of Milford; and one sister, Susan Swartz of Urbana. Mr. Allen was the scout master of Boy Scout Troop 39 of Sullivan and an Eagle Scout. He also obtained the Vigil Level in the Order of the Arrow. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 68 of Sullivan.
