Jasmine Alston, 13, of Kankakee, died Monday (July 28, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital, from injuries sustained in an auto accident July 23. Arrangements are pending at Lax Mortuary in Kankakee. Survivors include her mother, Gloria Fitch.
Barth Arseneau
LYNNWOOD, Wash. -- Barth joined his beloved wife of 48 years, Jeanette, when he lost his brief, courageous battle with cancer on Thursday (July 24, 2003), while surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 30, 1930, in Beaverville, the son of T.Y. and Theresa Arseneau. He served with the U.S. Army and was a 51-year member of the Donovan American Legion Post 0633. He lived the past 38 years in Lynnwood. He retired from GTE in 1986 and worked with Woltcom Inc. until 2002. Barth will be greatly missed by his brother, Aaron and wife, Eula of Beaverville; son, Mark and wife Maureen; granddaughters, Alicia and husband Luke Nicley, Kalen, Rachel and Melissa; daughter, Michelle and husband Jim McShane, grandchildren, James, Thomas, Kevin and Megan; daughter, Lori and husband Curtis Eggleston of Martinez, Calif.; great-granddaughter, Bayleigh Nicley; mother-in-law, Judith Witsoe; a large extended family and numerous friends. Barth impacted many lives with his loving and giving ways; he will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills cemetery, 409 Filbert Rd. in Lynnwood. In lieu of flowers and in hope of finding a cure, the family requests that donations be made to Puget Sound Tumor Institute, attn: Daniel Markowitz, 21605 76th Ave. West, Suite 200, Edmonds, WA 98206. The family would like to thank Dr. Markowitz and the staff at Puget Sound Tumor Institute as well as the nurses and staff on the 8th floor and ICU at Stevens Memorial Hospital.

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Mary Evelyn Bowen Barrett, 57, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., formerly of Kankakee, died July 21, 2003, at Three Rivers Hospital from lung cancer. Services were held July 24 at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Poplar Bluff. Burial was in Cochran cemetery in Harvell, Mo. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association; or to UCAN of Southeast Missouri Ms. Barrett was employed at the Missouri State Hospital. She was born Sept. 25, 1945, the daughter of Herschel and Ila Mae Burden Bowen. Her parents are deceased. She was a member of the Lions Club in Wappapello, Mo., the local AFCSME and the Ladies Altar Guild at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church. She attended Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Surviving are three daughters, Lynn Dill of Colorado, Lisa Shea of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Bridget Bavery of Savoie, Ill.; one brother, Tom Bowen of Redmond, Calif.; one sister, Bobbie Hill of Muskegon, Mich.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Deceased are one brother, Bill Bowen; and two grandchildren, infants Mary Sue Bavery and Alex Simpson.

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- Joe Earl Gilliam, 88, of Merrillville, Ind., and the father of a Grant Park resident, died Saturday (July 26, 2003). Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the Geisen Funeral Home, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville, Ind., where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, Ind. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Mr. Gilliam was a retired carpenter from Local 272 Chicago Heights. His wife, Mamie Gilliam, died in 1993. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Rabon and Marveta Gilliam of Dawsonville, Ga., Donnie and Charlotte Gilliam of Grant Park, Paul and Karie Gilliam of South Chicago Heights; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene Gilliam of Hollywood, Ala.; one sister, Sadie Gant of Chicago Heights; and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of East Lake Baptist Church.

DWIGHT -- Loraine Johnson, 79, of Heritage Manor, Dwight, died Sunday (July 27, 2003) at St. Mary's Hospital in Streator. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the Hager Memorial Home in Dwight. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Congregational Church, where she was a member. Pamela Gansch-Boythe will officiate. Burial will be in Union cemetery in Emington. Memorials may be made to the family. Mrs. Johnson was an EMT for Dwight Ambulance, a police dispatcher in Dwight and a school bus driver for UCC for many years. She served on the Dwight Village Board of Trustees. She was born May 16, 1924, in Emington, the daughter of Clarence and Rosa Brown Gray. Her husband, John L. Johnson, whom she married
Nov. 30, 1947, in Emington, died Feb. 26, 1996. Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Jean Johnson, Harry and Mary Johnson, Charles E. Johnson, all of Dwight; two sisters-in-law, Jannett Blundy of Forrest, Pearl Gray of Dwight; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Susan Gallagher of Glasgow, Scotland. One brother, James Gray, is deceased. She was a graduate of Saunemin High School Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Emington American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed collecting pens and pencils.

WILMINGTON -- Richard J. Pulaski (Polaszewski), 78, of Wilmington, died Sunday (July 27, 2003) at his home. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. services at the Reeves Funeral Home in Wilmington. Rev. Frank Vitus and Deacon Donald Dyer will officiate. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Wilmington. Memorials in his name may be made to Kuzma Care Cottage or to Joliet Area Hospice. Mr. Pulaski was retired from Dur-O-Wall Wire, Inc. of Aurora, where he worked as a millwright. He was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Chicago, the son of Joseph and Anna Gorney Polaszewski (Pulaski). His parents are deceased. Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Jo Roth; one son, Daniel Pulaski of Reddick; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Joyce Koehler of Pontiac, Pamela and David Monson of Wilmington, Amy and Andy Jingst of Iroquois; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Leonard Mauge of Snellville, Ga., Alice and Robert Kuba of Lake Placid, Fla.; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. One grandson, David Lee, is deceased. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Pulaski was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church and the Malcomb J. Mayo VFW, both in Wilmington. He also was a former member of the volunteer fire department. He greatly enjoyed fishing and photography.

GILMAN -- Mark St. Aubin, 69, of Gilman, formerly of Bourbonnais, died Sunday (July 20, 2003) at his home. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Kankakee. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Abraham Lincoln National cemetery in Elwood. Fitzpatrick Funeral Directors, Kankakee, is in charge of arrangements. Mr. St. Aubin was an electrician by trade and had worked at Armour Pharmaceutical. He was born Oct. 18, 1933, in Chicago, the son of Delmar and Lulu Meinzer St. Aubin. His parents are deceased. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Kelly St. Aubin of Manteno; one daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Len Addison of Manteno; and three grandchildren, Zachary Brian, Hannah Rose and Chloe Lauren St. Aubin, all of Manteno. His aunt, Elizabeth Meinzer, is deceased. He was a graduate of Momence High School and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. Mr. St. Aubin served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the VFW. He enjoyed camping, fishing and dogs.

A funeral Mass for Gerald "Gerry" J. Bovie, 74, of Bourbonnais, was celebrated July 25, 2003, at Maternity BVM Catholic Church in Bourbonnais. Rev. John Linnan and Deacon Mush Marcotte co-officiated. Mr. Bovie died July 21, 2003. Burial was in St. Anne Catholic cemetery, St. Anne. Pallbearers were Ron Kloske, Roger Benjamin, Leonard Flock, Bob Bovie, Kenny Tunks and Ron Hoekstra. Honorary Pallbearers were Guy Beaupre and Nino Levecque.

MATTOON -- Mildred L. Ball, 92, of Mattoon, cousin of Kankakee residents, died Monday (July 21, 2003) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Services were held July 24 at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home in Mattoon. Rev. John Besore officiated. Interment was in Dodge Grove cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church. Ms. Ball was born Nov. 4, 1910, in Coles County, the daughter of Samuel Leroy and Laura Belle Strong Ball. Surviving are several cousins, including Richard Ball, Ted Ball and Nancy Johnson, all of Kankakee. An infant son, Ward Kent Campbell; a brother, Maurice Ball; and a special friend, Pete Deckard, are deceased. Ms. Ball was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She had assisted in her father's independent oil business and with A&B; Trucking in Mattoon. She had also served in the past as vice president of the Council of Mattoon Towers.

PAXTON -- Elma M. Braithwaite, 81, of Paxton, formerly of Onarga, died Wednesday (July 23, 2003) at Asta Care Health Center in Paxton. There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Onarga cemetery. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are by Ford-Baier Funeral Home, Paxton. Mrs. Braithwaite was born Sept. 30, 1921, in New York Mills, Minn., the daughter of Matthew and Josephine Kaukonen Wiitamaki. Her husband, Harold Braithwaite, M.D., whom she married
in Chicago, died in 1985. Surviving are one son, Robert L. Braithwaite of Escondido, Calif.; one granddaughter, Leah Lewis of Onarga; and several nieces and nephews. Two sisters and two brothers are deceased. Mrs. Braithwaite spent her early years in Minnesota where she attended school, lived in Chicago until 1953 and lived 40 years in Onarga before moving to Paxton in 1993. She enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles.

Surving are a son and a daughter-in-law, Dan and Lisa Briner of Dwight; a daughter and a son-in-law, Eugene and Vic Briner of Dwight; a son, Gary Briner of Danville; a sister Margaret Mehallic of Streator; a sister, Doris Chergoski of Streator; a brother, Charles Longnecker of Streator; a brother and a sister-in-law, Robert and Leila Longnecker of Streator; and 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One brother and five sisters are deceased. She enjoyed bowling, reading, playing cards and grandchildren.
