Emma Carley

CRESCENT CITY -- Visitation for Emma Helene Carley, 88, of Crescent City, will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the Segur-Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka, and from 10 a.m. Friday until the 11 a.m. services at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Crescent City. Revs. Harold Grafe and Ray Barclay will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peters Lutheran Cemetery in Crescent City. Memorials may be made to the Prairieview Lutheran Home in Danforth or to the American Lutheran Church Building Fund in Kankakee. Mrs. Carley died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at Prairieview Lutheran Home in Danforth. She was born July 15, 1915, in Ash Grove Township, the daughter of Carson and Anna Rothfuss Duis. Her husband, LaVern H. Carley, whom she married Nov. 25, 1937, in Schwer, died March 27, 1984. Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Joanne L. and Norman Jerome of LaCrosse, Wis., Carol A. Carley of Kansas City, Kan., Sarah L. Carley-Niziolek and Stan Niziolek of Justice; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Richard D. and Dorothy Carley of Bourbonnais, Harvey A. Carley of Rantoul; one sister, Helena Breymeyer of Watseka; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Three brothers and three sisters are deceased. Mrs. Carley was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Kankakee.

Marcella Downs

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. -- Marcella M. Downs, 80, a former area resident, died July 7, 2003 at Mease Countryside Hospital in Tarpon Springs, Fla., surrounded by her family. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. Aug. 9 until the 11:30 a.m. memorial service at the Lake View Funeral Home in Fairview Heights, Ill., followed by visitation at the Clinton Hills Country Club in Belleville, Ill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Aroma Park, to Roy and Grace Haigh. Her husband, James L. Downs, whom she married April 25, 1942, died in 1990. In 1958 she moved with her husband and children to Belleville, Ill., where she made her home until 1990, when she moved to O'Fallon, Ill. Surviving are her children, Brian (Vicki) Downs of Ada, Mich., Rodney (Jane) Downs of Belleville, Lori (Greg) Bast of Safety Harbor, Fla.; five grandchildren, David, Kristin and Matthew Downs, all of Michigan, Joshua Sumner of Florida, Jeffrey Downs of Wisconsin; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn DeLuca of Kankakee and Amelia Herbst of Arizona; as well as many nieces and nephews. One sister, Dollie Stewart; one brother, Franklin Haigh; and two brothers-in-law, Willard Stewart and Joseph DeLuca, are deceased. She graduated from Chebanse High School. Mrs. Downs was employed by Amberg File and Index Company in Kankakee and the Aroma Park School system. Marcella was a talented homemaker and active in her children's school activities, scouting and volunteer work. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, bowling, golf, and participated in Ladies Golf Leagues at Clinton Hill and Tamarack Country Clubs. Mrs. Downs was a member of the United Methodist Church of Kankakee. Marcella loved and adored her family. She would always go that extra mile for her family and friends. Her thoughtfulness touched the lives of too many to list.

Ellen Edwards

Ellen Lela Edwards, 91, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Hopkins Park, died Monday (July 14, 2003) at Sylvia's Hospice House in Ocala, Fla. Services will be held at noon Saturday at Lax Mortuary in Kankakee. Rev. Hezekiah Brady Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens cemetery in Kankakee. Mrs. Edwards and her husband had resided in Hopkins Park, where they were active in the community and served as foster parents for more than 40 children. They were honored as "Master Foster Parents." She was born July 22, 1911, in Greenville, S.C., the daughter of John and Hattie Westfield. Her husband, Ozzie Edwards Sr., died in 1987. Surviving are two sons, Frank Edwards of Ocala, Fla., Michael Edwards of Lawrenceville, Ga.; one daughter, Judge Sandra Edwards-Stephens of Ocala, Fla.; one sister, Ann Hall of Calumet City; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and great-nephew, Larry and Bea Nolan of Kankakee. Three sons, Charles Robert Edwards, Kenneth Smith Edwards and Ozzie Lee Edwards; and nine brothers and sisters, are deceased. She was a member of St. Paul AME Church.

Wilhelmina Elliott

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- Wilhelmina Meyer Elliott, 95, of Southern Pines, N.C., formerly of Kankakee, died June 9, 2003 at the FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. A memorial service was held June 12 at Immanuel Episcopal Church, where she was a member. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines, N.C. Mrs. Elliott was a retired dietitian from Harlee Hospital in Flint, Mich. She was born Dec. 13, 1907, in Kankakee, the daughter of Louis and Margaret Radeke Meyer. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" and Ken Richardson of White Lake Township, Mich.; one son, John Elliott of Southern Pines, N.C.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of Kankakee High School and the University of Illinois.

WILMINGTON -- Frank H. Goodwin of rural Wilmington, died Wednesday (July 16, 2003) at his home. Arrangements are pending at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes.

Warren Hendrickson
Manteno Mental Health retiree

MANTENO -- Warren T. "Tracy" Hendrickson, 80, of Manteno, died Wednesday (July 16, 2003) at his home. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Brown Funeral Home in Manteno. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Manteno, where he was a member. Revs. Terry Anglea and Linda Burr Moxley will officiate. Burial, with military rites by the Aroma Park American Legion F-Troop, will be in Elmwood cemetery, Manteno. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund at First Presbyterian Church in Manteno. Mr. Hendrickson was retired from the Manteno Mental Health Center where he worked at the power plant. He was born June 20, 1923, in Manteno, the son of Daniel and Bessie Campton Hendrickson. Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy Spanhook, whom he married Jan. 5, 1946, at the First Presbyterian Church in Manteno; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Ellen Hendrickson of Manteno, Donnie and Pam Hendrickson of Troutdale, Ore.; one daughter, Donna Ceisel of Crystal Lake; one brother-in-law, Bernard Lesage of Manteno; four sisters-in-law, Ruth Hendrickson of Manteno, Phyllis Hendrickson of Atlantis, Fla., Jean Thompson and Wanda Lesage, both of Manteno; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Three brothers, Lester Hendrickson, Wilbur Hendrickson, Russell Hendrickson; and three sisters, Anna Kovell, Mildred Olson and Darlene Lesage, are deceased. Mr. Hendrickson served with the U.S. Marines during World War II and fought in the battle of Guam and Iwo Jima. He was a 53-year member of the Manteno American Legion Post 755. He was one of the original members of the first Color Guard in Manteno. He enjoyed fishing.

Anita Kwak

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Anita L. Kwak, 50, of Seattle, Wash., formerly of Momence, died Wednesday (July 9, 2003) at her home. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Momence. Memorials may be made in her name for Masses or to St. Patrick Academy in Momence. Ms. Kwak was employed at Swedish Providence Hospital in Seattle, Washington, specializing in hand therapy. She was born Jan. 21, 1953, the daughter of Joseph and Thecla Kwak. Surviving besides her parents of Momence are two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph A. and Denise Kwak of Bolingbrook, Thomas and Danielle Kwak of Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters and one brother-in-law, twin sister, Annette and Kevin Fitzpatrick and Francine Kwak, all of Seattle, Wash., Christine Kwak of Battle Creek, Mich.; two nieces and one nephew. Ms. Kwak graduated from St. Patrick Academy in Momence, Bishop McNamara High School in Kankakee and the University of Illinois in Champaign with a degree in occupational therapy. She enjoyed all outdoor sports, running, biking, canoeing and especially kayaking.

CULLOM -- Daniel Kyburz, 82, of Cullom, died Wednesday (July 16, 2003) in the emergency room of OSF Saint James-John W. Albrecht Medical Cetner, Pontiac, after a sudden illness. Arrangements are pending at the Harris-Martin-Burke Funeral Home in Cullom.

Gladys Poole

Gladys J. Poole, 68, of Bourbonnais, died Wednesday (July 16, 2003) at her home after a short illness. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Charles Wheeler will officiate. Burial will be in Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley. Mrs. Poole had worked at the Bear Brand, Fesco Plastics and Kankakee Industrial Supply. She was born Feb. 19, 1935, in Kankakee, the daughter of Adelore and Evelyn Saffer Raymond. Her parents are deceased. Her husband, William W. Poole, whom she married July 8, 1965, in Joliet, died Jan. 19, 1987. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Greg Glidewell of Bradley, Brenda and Lonnie Kolwelter of Bourbonnais; three stepsons and two stepdaughters-in-law, Bill and Kathie Poole of Kankakee, Joseph and Janet Poole of Gavney, S.C., Dennis Poole of Louisville, Ohio; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Carolyn and Jerry Crocer of Converse, S.C.; one sister and two brothers-in-law, Mary and Harlen Minor of Bourbonnais, Tony St. Louis of Kankakee; one brother, Lester Raymond of Bradley; one sister-in-law, Elinor Barber of Kankakee; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; special friend, Richard Hildebrand of Bourbonnais; and several nieces and nephews. One brother, Adelore "Bud" Raymond; and one sister, JoAnn St. Louis, are deceased. She enjoyed helping others.

Alva Ritsema

Visitation for Alva Conn Ritsema, 88, of Kankakee, will be from 5-9 p.m. today at the Michigan Memorial Funeral Home in Flat Rock, Mich., where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Tom D. Jarrell will officiate. Burial will be in Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock. Local arrangements are being handled by the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes. Ms. Ritsema died Wednesday (July 16, 2003) at the Miller Center in Kankakee. She was born March 11, 1915, in Kentucky, the daughter of Green B. and Martha Boyd Conn. Her husband, Leonard Jarrell, whom she married in 1930 in Dana, Ky., died in 1969. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard Jr. and Barbara Jarrell of Ishpeming, Mich., Robert and Nancy Jarrell of Brownstown, Mich., Tom and Linda Jarrell of LaFollette, Ind.; one daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Don Baumgartner of Kankakee; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Eva Roberts of Hessel, Mich., Myrtle Hamilton of Jacksonville, Fla., Joanna and Terry Lykens of Honaker, Ky.; one brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Mary Alice Conn of Dana, Ky.; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. One son, Daniel Jarrell; one grandson, Robert Jarrell; one great-grandson, Daniel Baumgartner; two brothers, Woodrow and Aaron Conn; and one sister, Era Ratliff, are deceased. Ms. Ritsema was affiliated with the Aroma Park United Methodist Church. She enjoyed flower gardening.

MANHATTAN -- William "Bill" Robbins, 59, of Manhattan, died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at Palos Community Hospital. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at the Forsythe Funeral Home in Manhattan. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church in Manhattan. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph School Building Fund. Mr. Robbins was former owner and operator of K&R; Oil Co. He was most recently employed by Metra as a conductor. Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Bee Regan Robbins; one daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and Kevin Shea of Chicago; one son, Matthew Robbins of Manhattan; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Loisann Orlovich of Plainfield, Gayle and Robert Haley of Manhattan; several nieces and nephews; and a large extended family, especially Daniel (Judy) Robbins of Romeoville. His parents, Leo and Lillian Robbins; and one son, Joseph Robbins, are deceased. Mr. Robbins was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manhattan and served on its administrative board. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was active in sports as a young man and was a Sox fan. He enjoyed playing cards.

Korban Spangler

ROBERTS -- Korban Ezekiel Spangler, infant son of Rev. Russell Fred and Juanita Jo Hebert Spangler of Roberts, died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital, shortly after birth. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Living Word Church in Roberts, where he was a member. Douglas Lee will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery. Bourbonnais Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements. Surviving besides his parents are four sisters, Kaytlynd, Keirstyn, Karrissa and Konnaleigh; paternal grandparents, Robert and Anitra Spangler of Manteno; maternal grandparents, James and Jane Hebert of Manteno; and paternal great-grandmothers, Fran Spangler of Manteno and Mildred Hertz of Bourbonnais. Two paternal great-grandfathers, Russell Spangler and Chester Hertz; maternal great-grandparents, Daniel and Freida Shreffler and Frank and Mary Hebert, are deceased.

Alexandria Rousey

GILMAN -- Private graveside services for Alexandria Lee Rousey, 2, of Gilman, were held July 15 in the Gilman cemetery. Rev. Gary Fairchild officiated. Alexandria died July 11, 2003. Pallbearers were Cory Baxter, Joe Rousey and Tyler and Kyle Wilken.

Ronald Schoolman

ONARGA -- Services for Ronald Eugene Schoolman, 66, of rural Onarga, were held July 11 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Gilman. Rev. Gary Fairchild officiated. Mr. Schoolman died July 7, 2003. Burial was in Wenger cemetery, Gilman. Pallbearers were Ted Lavoie, Parr Schoolman, Harry Mogged, Dan Slack, Vic Monk and Rolland Zachgo. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Dubree, Glenn Mogged, Jack Monk, Roscoe Mason, Eugene Miller, Don Reitz and Rick and Delmar Schoolman.

Edward Haduch

A funeral Mass for Edward M. Haduch, 67, of Kankakee, was celebrated July 16 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bradley. Mr. Haduch died July 13, 2003. Burial was in Resurrection cemetery in Justice. Pallbearers were Michael Jay, Nancy Rodzon, David Glaeser, Michael Kujawa, Robert Daran and Raymond Sliz.
