Martha Osenga

Visitation for Martha Marie "Muffy" Osenga, 76, of Kankakee, will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hertz-Thoma Funeral Chapel, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. Rev. Tom Wilber will officiate. Burial will be in Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley. Martha died Sunday (July 13, 2003) at her home She was born May 27, 1927, in Fisk, Mo., the daughter of Andrew W. Gillihan and Mary J. Gillihan-Leach. Surviving are four sons and two daughters-in-law, Vernon "Sonny" and Jackie Osenga, Larry and Connie Osenga and Bruce Osenga, all of Kankakee and Roger Osenga of Rialto, Calif.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Connie Perry, Jackie and Dave Coulman, Sharon and Bill Callaway, all of Kankakee; one sister, Linnie Williams of Satellite Beach, Fla.; 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, A.W. Gillihan and M.J. Gillihan-Leach, Mrs. Osenga was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Osenga; sisters, Mary Hankes, Minnie Battin, Polly Green; brothers, Millard Gillihan, James Gillihan, Melvin Gillihan; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; three nieces, two nephews; and one great-niece. Martha worked several years as a technician at Shapiro Developmental Center and as a CNA at Kankakee Terrace. She enjoyed country and spiritual music and her pets. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. A friend to all, anyone that knew Martha will miss her deeply.

Helen Schmalz
owned florist shop

Helen Schmalz, 92, of Kankakee, died Saturday (July 12, 2003) at Provena Our Lady of Victory Nursing Home in Bourbonnais. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery. Rev. Tom Wilber will officiate. Mrs. Schmalz was the owner of Schmalz Variety and Florist Shop in Bradley from 1954-1981. Prior to that she was an office manager at Stewart Warner in Chicago from 1929-1954. She was born Aug. 30, 1910 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Her husband, Milton Schmalz, is deceased. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Larry Lucas of Kalamazoo, Mich.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three stepgrandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Schmalz was the founder of the East Court Village Musicians. She had been involved with volunteer work for several years, particularly with veterans, American Legion, the Spice of Life and the Merry Music Makers. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Bradley and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. During World War II she was active in the Women's Ordnance Workers.

Patricia Lindgren

Services for Patricia A. Robards Lindgren, 56, of Bradley, were held July 12 at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais. Rev. Eleanor Ditrick officiated. Mrs. Lindgren died July 9, 2003. Burial was in All Saints cemetery in Bourbonnais. Pallbearers were Don and Kevin Robards, Sam Ashmore, Scott O'Brien, Rick and Brad Dunbar and Karl Guiney.

S. Ray Blake

ST. ANNE -- Services for S. Ray Blake, 64, of St. Anne, were held July 12 at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais. Rev. Adam Moore officiated. Mr. Blake died July 8, 2003. Burial was in Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery in Aroma Township. Pallbearers were Joe Clark, Roger Blake, Josh Webb, Karl Jenkins, Mark Senesac, Mark Senesac Jr., Tom Webb and Shane Blake.

Elsie Harms

CULLOM -- Services for Elsie M. Harms, 94, of Cullom, were held July 14 at the Cullom United Methodist Church. Rev. Herb Thompson officiated. Mrs. Harms died July 11, 2003. Burial was in West Lawn cemetery in Cullom. Pallbearers were Tom Harms, Dale Gragson, Mike Toohill, Lynn Frantz, Dick Gassler and Merle Jehle.

George Barr
39-year ComEd employee

WILTON CENTER -- Visitation for George W. Barr, 85, of Wilton Center, will be from 3-8 p.m. today at the Forsythe Funeral Home in Manhattan, and from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until the 10 a.m. services at the Wilton Federated Church in Wilton Center. Rev. Richard Wagner will officiate. Burial will be in the Wilton cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wilton Federated Church or to the Manhattan paramedics. He died Friday (July 11, 2003) at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet. Mr. Barr retired from Commonwealth Edison after 39 years of service. He served as president of the Peotone School Board and was a Wilton Township Trustee for several terms. He was born June 10, 1918 the son of Charles and Isabel Mackender Barr. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, the former Mary Cann; one daughter, Barbara Palmer of Wilton Center; one son and daughter-in-law, George Jr. and Susan Barr of Spring Green, Wis.; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; special nephew, Dale Drew; and special caretaker, Ivan Atanassov. One sister, Vera Drew; one brother, Howard Barr; and one great-granddaughter, Kaylee Anderson, are deceased. He was a lifelong resident of Wilton Township and a graduate of Joliet Township High School. He attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. Mr. Barr served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the Manhattan American Legion Post 935. He served as chairman and treasurer of the Wilton Federated Church executive board, and was a member of the Wilton cemetery Board of Trustees.

William Barton

WILMINGTON -- William R. Barton Sr., 77, of Cicero and Wilmington, died Saturday (July 12, 2003) at his home. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the 11 a.m. services at the Freitag Funeral Home in Wilmington. His nephew, Rev. Danny Chrestman, will officiate. Burial, with full military rites by the U.S. Army, will be in Oakwood cemetery, Wilmington. Memorials may be made to the Mac Neal Hospice, 3249 South Oak Park Ave., 5 East, Berwyn, IL 60402. He was born March 1, 1926, in Chicago, the son of Frank and Katherine Cusack Barton. His wife, the former Doris Bever, died in 1990. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, William R. Jr. and Linda Barton of Romeoville; one daughter and son-in-law, Jolene and Neil Dubry of Aurora; two grandchildren and one great-grandson; one sister, Delores Banasik of Sebring, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Barton served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

MILFORD -- Visitation for Clyde Marvin Brasel, 80, of Milford, will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Knapp Funeral Home in Milford, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Revs. Pat Allin and Neil Larimore will officiate. Burial will be in Sugar Creek cemetery in Stockland. Memorials may be made to the Stockland Gym, Stockland Fire Department, Stockland Methodist Church or to Iroquois Memorial Hospice. He died Saturday (July 12, 2003) at his home. Mr. Brasel was a farmer in the Stockland and Milford area. He was born July 18, 1922, in Stockland, the son of Frank and Mary Holmes Brasel. His parents are deceased. Surviving are his wife, the former Georgia Handy, whom he married Aug. 23, 1945, in Fowler, Ind., of Milford; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Roger and Lenda Brasel and Dale Brasel, all of Milford, Tony and Kathy Brasel of Bourbonnais, John and Karen Brasel of Milford; one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Ora and Opal Handy of Milford and Dorine Handy of Oxford, Ind.; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Brasel of Milford, Courtney Brasel and Trey Brasel, both of Bourbonnais; four stepgranddaughters, Melisa and Jeff Cavitt of Milford, Theresa and Neil Schippert of Watseka, Jennifer and Chad Snare of Pennsylvania, Julie and Rick Ebert of Virginia; and five step-great-grandchildren, Rob and Katie Cavitt, Jacob and Taylor Schippert and Cole Snare. Two brothers and one sister are deceased. Mr. Brasel was a member of the Stockland Methodist Church and served on the Wellington School Board. He enjoyed sports, his grandchildren and farming.

WATSEKA -- Warren S. Buck, 79, of Watseka, died Saturday (July 12, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Baier Funeral Home in Watseka, and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the 11 a.m. services at Faith Lutheran Church in Watseka, where he was a member. Rev. Mel Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Dell cemetery in Iroquois. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Mr. Buck was a farmer. He was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Stone Lake, Wis., the son of Harold and Madge Sherrard Buck. Surviving are his wife, the former Rose Ann Kraft, whom he married Nov. 27, 1943, in Schwer, of Watseka; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan Jane and Charles Hacker of Maryland, Gloria Jean and George Kalhust of Lafayette, Ind.; one sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Ronald Ruprecht of Wisconsin; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. One daughter, Patricia Ann; and one brother, are deceased. Mr. Buck had been a member of the Pittwood School Board. He enjoyed traveling.

Everett Burling

GILMAN -- Everett W. Burling, 74, of Gilman, died Sunday (July 13, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. Arrangements are pending at the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton.

Donald Ditterline

Visitation for Donald Ditterline, 70, of Kankakee, will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. John Franklin will officiate. Burial will be in Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family wishes. He died Saturday (July 12, 2003) at his home. Mr. Ditterline was an operator engineer of heavy equipment for Local 150, retiring in 1994 after 45 years of service. He was a lifetime member of Local 150. He was born Feb. 26, 1933, in Renshaw, the son of Amy Ditterline Wright. His mother is deceased. Surviving are his wife, the former Charlotte Drazy, whom he married Nov. 11, 1954, in Vienna, of Kankakee; three sons and one daughter-in-law, David and Tammy Ditterline, Steven Ditterline and Darryl Ditterline, all of Kankakee; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Carol Sue and Lon Hemphill of Golconda, Patricia Ann Dennis of Florida, Marylin Elaine Verkamman of Cypress; three grandchildren; and his stepfather, W. Marion Wright. Mr. Ditterline was a member and on the board of directors for many years at the Bourbonnais Sportsman's Club, where he was co-founder of the wild game feed. He was also a member of the Chicago Beagle Club for 50 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

John Giddings

UNIVERSITY PARK -- John H. Giddings, 61, of University Park, and a former area resident, died Saturday (July 12, 2003) at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights. Visitation is tentatively set for Wednesday evening with services on Thursday. Lax Mortuary in Kankakee is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Giddings.

Loretta Grzelak Visitation for Loretta "Lorry" M. Grzelak, 74, of Bourbonnais, will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Maternity BVM Catholic Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in Maternity cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family wishes. She died Friday (July 11, 2003) at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, after a short illness. Mrs. Grzelak had worked at Walgreen's in Kankakee. She was born June 10, 1929, in Chicago, the daughter of Frank and Sophie Molek Kulik. Her husband, Joseph Grzelak, whom she married June 12, 1948, at St. John of God Catholic Church, Chicago, died Aug. 15, 1992. Surviving are five sons and four daughters-in-law, Francis and Amy Grzelak of Phoenix, Ariz., Paul and Lori Ann Grzelak of Bourbonnais, Christopher and Martha Grzelak of Lake Havasu, Ariz., John Grzelak of Arrowsmith, Peter and Tammy Grzelak of Bradley; one sister, Virginia Przytula of Crestwood; one brother, Edward Kulik of Crestwood; and eight grandchildren. One son, Gerard Grzelak; one brother, Albert Kulik; and one daughter-in-law, Pam Grzelak, are deceased. Mrs. Grzelak was a member of the Council of Catholic Women at her church and a lifetime member of the Bourbonnais VFW Woman's Auxiliary Post 9961. She enjoyed crossword and wordsearch puzzles.

Edward M. Haduch, 67, of Kankakee, died Sunday (July 13, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bourbonnais Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bradley, where he was a member. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery in Justice. Memorials may be made to the family. Mr. Haduch was a printer for Playboy Magazine for 33 years, retiring in 1997. He was born Sept. 5, 1935, in Chicago, the son of Paul and Caroline Zuber Haduch. Surviving are his wife, the former Elizabeth Kewley, whom he married April 15, 1961, in Chicago, of Kankakee; two sons and one daughter-in-law, David Haduch of Kankakee, Daniel and Kimberly Haduch of Bourbonnais; seven sisters and three brothers-in-law, Helen Draus of Darien, Florence Jay of Orland Park, Pearl Gayeski of Lisle, Evelyn and Wayne Todd of Lisle, Lilian and Raymond Sliz of Plainfield, Stephanie Rodzon of Chicago, Jean and Michael Kolessar of Orland Park; one brother and sister-in-law, Milton and Evelyn Paduch of Palmdale, Calif.; and one grandchild. One sister, Marie Nakielny; two brothers, Walter and Stanley Haduch; and five brothers-in-law, Edward Nakielny, Joseph Draus, Edward Jay, Edward Gayeski and John Rodzon, are deceased. Mr. Haduch served in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed the Chicago Cubs, bowling and gardening.
