William Boma
MORRIS -- William J. Boma, 80, of Morris, formerly of Piper City, died June 20, 2003, at his home. A funeral Mass was celebrated June 24 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morris, where he was a member and Eucharistic Minister. Rev. Robert Hoffenkamp officiated. Burial, with military rites by the Morris VFW Post 6049 and the Morris American Legion Post 294, was in Mt. Carmel cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Grundy Community Hospice or to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Building Fund. Mr. Boma owned his own tax service in Piper City until 1955 when he went to work for the Natural Gas Pipeline Company in Herscher. He moved to Morris when he was transferred to the Joliet office in 1969, retiring from the gas company in 1986. He was born Oct. 12, 1922, in Piper City, the son of John and Gladys Baline Boma. July 2, 1955, of Morris; three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Kim Boma of Scottsdale, Ariz., James and Barbara Boma of Morris, John and Susan Boma of Eden Prairie, Minn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Anthony Bruce of Savoy, Barbara and David Williams of Palatine; seven grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Robert Stecher of Ottawa; four sisters-in-law, Christine Boma, Margaret Boma, Mary Jo Boma, Eloise Baima; one brother-in-law, John Steinchen; and several nieces and nephews. Seven brothers, Theron, Donald, Richard, John, James, Francis and Theodore Boma, are deceased. He was a graduate of Piper City High School and the Walton School of Commerce with a degree in accounting. Mr. Boma served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and was a member of the Morris American Legion and the Morris VFW. He was active in the Morris Rotary Club where he served many years as treasurer. He was a volunteer and board member of the We Care Program.

Jacob Ryan Byrd, infant son of K. Byrd of Frankfort and B. Beck of Kankakee, died at birth Sunday (June 29, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center. Private services will be held.
Theresa Downing
Theresa M. Downing, 97, of Kankakee, formerly of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Coal City, died Monday (July 1, 2003). Graveside services were held July 5 at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Wilmington. Rev. Frank Vitus officiated. Arrangements were by Reeves Funeral Home in Wilmington. Ms. Downing was born Dec. 30, 1905, the daughter of John and Helen Flynn Downing. Surviving are one sister, Marian Kehrt of Bourbonnais; and several nieces and nephews.

Frank Charles Evans, 84, of Bradley, died Friday (July 4, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. today at the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes, where services will be at 11 a.m. Monday. Rev. Richard Sagarsee will officiate. Aug. 24, 1991 at Central Christian Church, of Bradley; one stepson, Tom and Alice McVey of Kankakee; one stepdaughter, Sue and Mike Nickles of Bourbonnais; one brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Carol Evans of Orland Park; four step grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Evans retired from Ford Motor Co. in 1982, after 25 plus years of service as a dye maker at the Stamping plant in Chicago Heights. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Central Christian Church in Bourbonnais, and enjoyed golfing and bowling and all sports, especially the Chicago Cubs.

PEOTONE -- Sophie Janas, 100, of Peotone, formerly of North Judson, Ind., died Saturday (July 5, 2003) at Anchorage of Beecher. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Monday at Fedde-Helfrich Chapel in Peotone. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, where she was a member. Rev. Michael Ginter will officiate. Burial will be in St. Jacobs Catholic cemetery in North Judson, Ind. Mrs. Janas was born March 6, 1903 in Chicago, the daughter of Stanley and Mary Nawracaj Dziedzik. Her husband, Charles Janas, is deceased. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Arnold Szudarski of Peotone; one stepdaughter, Jackie Metelak of Chicago; and one brother, Jan Dziedzic of Poland. Three brothers, Alex, Walter and Andrew, are deceased.

CHATSWORTH -- Floyd "Pete" Kurtenbach, 88, of rural Chatsworth, died Wednesday (July 2, 2003) at Greenbriar Terrace in Piper City. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Hager Memorial Home in Chatsworth with a 3:45 p.m. rosary. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Chatsworth, where he was a member. Rev. Richard Brunkskill will officiate. Burial will be in St. Patrick cemetery in Chatsworth. Memorials may be made to Knights of Columbus. Mr. Kurtenbach was born Dec. 17, 1914 in rural Chatsworth, the son of Owen and Margaret Carney Kurtenbach. June 17, 1944 in Dwight, died Dec. 13, 1998. Surviving are two daughters and three sons-in-law, Dorothy and Bernie Deany of Bloomington, Joan and Cliff Brady of Oak Park, and Jim Koehler; four sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Joni Kurtenbach of Chicago, Ken and Kathy Kurtenbach of Chatsworth, Jerry and Susan Kurtenbach of Oak Park, Richard and Deb Kurtenbach of Littleton, Colo.; 21 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren One daughter, Ellen Koehler; two brothers, Clarence and Vern; and two sisters, Catherine and Rita, are deceased. Mr. Kurtenbach worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation from 1960-68, and retired from farming in 1980. He was a 4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus since 1934, a Grand Knight for four years, a member of the Lions Club, Moose Club, and formerly served on the Chatsworth Board of Education. He was a member of the library board and a lifetime member of Illinois Farm Bureau. Mr. Floyd was awarded the 1983 Illinois Department of Conservation Farm Family of the Year Award and the Noble Pearson Distinguished Citizens Award. He attended Chatsworth High School and enjoyed playing cards, reading and attending ball games.

May 4, 1974 in Peoria; her parents of Peoria; one sister and two brothers-in-law, Barbara and David Masters of Peoria, Bill and Melody LaRocque of Kankakee; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Charles Thurman of Palm Coast, Fla., Kathy and Jim Regnier of Bourbonnais, Mary Margaret Cunningham of St. Pete Beach, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and her mother-in-law, Audrey LaRocque of Kankakee. Mrs. LaRocque was a second-grade teacher at Shabonna Grade School. She received her B.S. from Illinois State University and her M.S. from Olivet Nazarene University. She mentored for the Masters Program at ONU in curriculum. She enjoyed traveling, cycling and walking.

Jan. 29, 1950 in Potomac; four children, Debbie and Conrad Stynchula of Jamesville, Wis., Robby L. and Kathi Moore of Chebanse, Brenda and Robert Zum Mallen of Camdenton, Mo., Tammy and Danny Duncan of Rossville; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Two sisters and two brothers are deceased. Mrs. Moore was a graduate of Potomac High School and also attended Eureka College in Bloomington. She and her husband farmed in the Sheldon area before moving to Rossville. She was a Sunday school teacher at her church, and a 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed collecting ceramic pigs and flea marketing.
Nathan Sargeant

CHATSWORTH -- Nathan Sargeant, 9, formerly of Chatsworth, died June 21, 2003, in a house fire in St. Elmo, where he was living since the death of his mother, Rose Sargeant, on April 7, 2003. A memorial service was held June 24 at the First Assembly of God Church in Vandalia. His ashes will be buried at the Mona Township cemetery in Kempton at a later date. He was born Jan. 2, 1994. Surviving are two brothers, Jim Sargeant of Champaign, Tom Sargeant of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Cindy Sargeant of Decatur, Becky Sargeant of Moline, Amy Sargeant of Kankakee; and one uncle and aunt, Lee and Connie Roberson of Bourbonnais. His maternal grandparents, Harvey and Ruby Roberson, are deceased.

LOCKPORT -- Edward L. Shelton, 66, of Lockport, relative of area residents, died Wednesday (July 2, 2003) at Silver Cross Hospital. Services were held July 5 at First Apostolic Church in Lockport, where he was a member. Pastors W.C. Willis and Eddie Hodge co-officiated. Interment was in Lockport City cemetery. Mr. Shelton was employed at Fisher Body in Willow Springs for 33 years, retiring in 1989. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957, part of which was in Germany.

He was born Oct. 16, 1934 in Anna, the son of Roy and Thelma Bloodsworth Smith. His parents are deceased. One sister, Evelyn Jackson; and two brothers, Roy and Gordon Smith, are deceased. Mr. Smith was a retired steelworker, and the former vice-president of the local union. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Exline Sportsmans Club, enjoyed fishing, hunting, birdwatching, gardening and cooking.

in 1943 in Chicago; one daughter, Cathy Skoglund of Beecher; one sister, Effie Durkin of South Holland; three grandchildren, April Norris, Kristin and Jerry Radats, all of Sauk Village, Raymond Skoglund of Steger; and seven great-grandchildren. Ten brothers and sisters are deceased. Mr. Stratinsky was a foreman at International Harvester, retiring in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army, Harvester Battalion, in England. He was active with Junior Achievement through International Harvester, was an active member of United Church of Christ in South Holland and enjoyed golf.

A funeral Mass for Genevieve F. Steinhart Plante, 80, of Kankakee, was celebrated July 2 at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Kankakee. Rev. Richard Pighini officiated. Mrs. Plante died June 28, 2003. Burial was in Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery in Aroma Township. Pallbearers were Scott and Mike Dilday, Ricky Baud, Erik Holtz, Brent Laird and Bryan Farmer.

ASHKUM -- Services for Joshua W. "Josh" Kohler, 21, of Crescent City, formerly of Ashkum, were held July 3 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Crescent City. Josh died June 30, 2003. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery in Chebanse. Pallbearers were A.J. Dixon, Travis Kohler, Tim Jamar, Scott Ducat, Andy Kitchens and Andrew Kellogg.
