Maxine L. Ward, 73, of Bradley, died today (July 24, 2002) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital, Kankakee.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Senesac Kankakee Funeral Home with services on Friday morning.
Survivors include two sons, Terry Ward and Wes Ward, both of Kankakee.
Clifford Marlett
CISSNA PARK -- Services for Clifford "Huly" L. Marlett, 80, of Cissna Park, formerly of Gilman and rural Martinton, were held July 22 at the Redenius Funeral Home, Gilman. Rev. Gary L. Fairchild officiated.
Mr. Marlett died July 19, 2002.
Burial was in Wenger cemetery, Gilman. Pallbearers were R.E. Courtright, C. Koerner, K. Massey, B. Sledge, D. Verkler and R.E. Williams, all Illinois State Police.
Juanita Gilbert
Services for Juanita Jean Gilbert, 73, of Bradley, were held July 23 at Hertz-Thoma Funeral Chapel, Kankakee. Rev. Kathy Sweet officiated.
Mrs. Gilbert died July 18, 2002.
Burial was in Mound Grove Gardens cemetery.
Vernon Kurtenbach
Services for Vernon J. "Jack" Kurtenbach, 90, of Kankakee, were held July 22 at the Hertz-Thoma Funeral Chapel. Rev. Charles Wheeler officiated.
Mr. Kurtenbach died July 19, 2002.

Marguerite Johnson
Services for Marguerite C. Johnson, 87, of Kankakee, were held July 23 at Asbury United Methodist Church. Revs. Don Long and Edwin Wilcox officiated.
Mrs. Johnson died July 19, 2002.
Burial was in Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery. Pallbearers were Glenn, David and Bob Johnson, Mark Wilcox, Greg Johnson and Jeff Stoltz.
LaMarra Clasberry-Harris
LaMarra Katrice "Treece" Clasberry-Harris, 29, of Atlanta, Ga., and the daughter of Kankakee residents, died Friday (July 19, 2002) of a heart attack.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Jones Funeral Home, Kankakee, and from 9 a.m. Saturday until the 9:30 a.m. services at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, St. Anne. Rev. Alex T. Bond will officiate.
Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the family.
She was born Nov. 3, 1972 in Chicago.
Surviving are her parents, Hozie Clasberry and Mary Anne Toliver, both of Kankakee; two sons, Eldredge Toliver and Patrick Toliver, both of Kankakee; one daughter, Jamiliah Harris of Kankakee; eight sisters, EiNara Yates of Atlanta, Ga., LaWanda Schumpert of Chicago, Toyanna Clasberry of Milwaukee, Wis., Lynette Schumpert of Las Vegas, Nev., LaToya Clasberry of Milwaukee, Wis., Breanna Clasberry and Tiara Clasberry, both of Chicago, Chynnah Clasberry of Kankakee; seven brothers and two sisters-in-law, Theo and LaShelle Welch of Norfolk, Va., Eldredge and Tracey Clasberry of Champaign, LaMarr Clasberry of Birmingham, Ala., Adrian Clasberry of Indianapolis, Ind., Jamal Clasberry of Danville, Darell Schumpert of Las Vegas, Nev. and Brandon Clasberry of Chicago.
Her grandfather, George Lee Toliver; and great-grandfather, Willie Clasberry, are deceased.
She was a member of the Brown Ave. Baptist Church.

CHERRY VALLEY, Calif. -- Russell "Bud" Cross, 82, of Cherry Valley, Calif., former Aroma Park resident who lived in the area for 40 years, died Tuesday (July 23, 2002) at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital, Banning, Calif.
Graveside services will be held at 1:15 p.m. Friday at the Riverside National cemetery, Riverside, Calif.

Weaver Mortuary, Beaumont, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cross worked as a machine operator for 15 years for the U.S. Post Office in Palm Springs, Calif. He also worked as a salesman for Bard Distributing Co. in San Bernardino, Calif. and Yucca Valley, Calif.
He was born Aug. 19, 1919 in Aroma Park.
His first wife, Stella Cross, is deceased.
Surviving are his wife, Eileen H. Cross of Cherry Valley; one daughter, Julie Cross of Morongo Valley, Calif.; three sons, Bud Cross of Solvang, Calif., Gerald Cross of Yucca Valley, Calif., Anthony Cross of Phoenix, Ariz.; one stepdaughter, Carol Morales of Highland, Calif.; four stepsons, Gary Wasetis of Elwood, James Wasetis of Eureka, Calif., Jeffrey Wasetis of San Antonio, Texas, Robert Wasetis of Cedar Glen, Calif.; one sister, Betty LaGesse of Bourbonnais; one brother, Robert Cross of Kankakee; five grandchildren, 12 stepgrandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Evangeline Cross, is deceased.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II where he received the Purple Heart.
Mr. Cross was a member of the Elks Lodge 836 in San Bernardino and the Highland Springs Golf Club.

Timothy Hamerlinck
PETERSBURG -- Timothy Kevin Hamerlinck, 34, of Petersburg, and the brother of a Bourbonnais resident, died Friday (July 19, 2002) at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, from injuries received in a fall.
Services were held July 22 at the Church of Christ, Petersburg, where he was a member. Rev. Eddie Bratton officiated.
Burial was in Oakland cemetery, Petersburg.

He was born Oct. 20, 1967, in Springfield, the son of Dallas and Gloria LeMar Hamerlinck. His father is deceased.

His paternal grandfather, George Hamerlinck, is deceased.
A graduate of Western Illinois University, he was an award-winning writer for the Western Illinois University Student Press.
Raymond Mathis,
active in Red Cross, community leader
Raymond Mathis, 73, longtime Red Cross volunteer and community leader, passed away Tuesday (July 23, 2002) after a bout with lung cancer.
Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Friday at the Bourbonnais Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. Revs. Howard and Eleanor Ditrick will officiate.
Burial will be in All Saints cemetery, Bourbonnais.
Memorials can be made to the local chapter of the American Red Cross.
He was employed at Illinois Bell Telephone, where he worked for over 38 years. In 1984, he was given the Alexander Graham Bell Award, from Illinois Bell, for outstanding community service.
After retirement, Mr. Mathis oversaw the communications systems at Olivet Nazarene University for five years.
Throughout his life, Ray stayed interested in the community. He served as the Kankakee County Red Cross water safety chairman for more than 25 years. He was active with the local chapter of Civil Defense, and in 1977 received a letter of commendation from the Illinois State Police for his part in saving stranded motorists on local highways during a major blizzard.
In 1990, he was awarded the "Volunteer of the Year" award from both Kankakee County and the State of Illinois chapters of the Red Cross for his role in the education of water safety throughout the area. In 1997, Mr. Mathis was presented the Clara Barton Award for outstanding service for the Red Cross.
He was an active blood donor, donating over 17 gallons, and was one of the first volunteers in the Red Cross pheresis program. He served on the Red Cross Board for 38 years and served as health and safety chairman and became the disaster relief chairman in 1999. Ray qualified for the National Disaster Team and spent three weeks at Ground Zero in New York City, providing service and support to all the brave people working there. He was awarded the American Red Cross National Disaster Services Award.
Mr. Mathis served as chairman of the Grinnell Drainage Commission for 10 years. He was active in the formation and development of Exline Sportsmen's Club and served as the lake director for several years. In 1974, he won Sportsman of the Year at Exline.
He was born June 1, 1929, in Centralia, to Harry C. and Ruth Henry Mathis.
He is survived by his wife of almost 48 years, Diane (Lindsay) Mathis; a son, Wade of Davenport, Iowa; two grandchildren, Cody and Meghan, also of Davenport, Iowa; a cousin, Pauline Raines of Centralia; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Mathis served as a sonarman in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, earning several medals for exemplary service.
Ray was a member of the Manteno Sportsmen's Club and the Telephone Company Pioneers. He was also a member of the Kankakee VFW and the American Legion.
Richard Read
CABERY -- Visitation for Richard L. Read, 67, of Cabery, will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Harris-Martin-Burke Funeral Home, Cullom.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cabery United Methodist Church. Rev. Robert Fear will officiate.
Burial will be in Pilot cemetery, Herscher.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to a charity of the donor's choice.
He died Tuesday (July 23, 2002) at his home.
Mr. Read was employed at the Pontiac Correctional Center and retired from the Illinois Department of Corrections in 1992.
He was born Nov. 1, 1934, in Watseka, the son of Donald L. and Margaret E. Nightingale Read. His parents are deceased.
Surviving are his wife, the former Ethel Irene Weaver, whom he married
April 3, 1960, in Dwight, of Cabery; one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Ken Peterson of Cabery; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Kathleen Read of Streator; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Dan and Linda Gash of Papineau; 10 grandchildren, including one grandson who was raised in the Read home, Lance and Ronda Kray of Dwight; eight great-grandchildren; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Rolland and Betty Read of Cullom, Doug and Carol Read of Morris and Dennis and Sandy Read of Pontiac.
One sister, Carolyn McCulloh; and one stepdaughter, Lonna Kray, are deceased.
Mr. Read was a 1952 graduate of Cullom High School and a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1957-59.
He was raised in the Cullom United Methodist Church.
