ORVO A. HELANDER, 90
Local businessman had life-long love of music.
Orvo A. Helander, who combined his love of music and travel with the active life of a local businessman, died Tuesday, March 22, of complications from pneumonia.
Born in Waukegan in 1914, Mr. Helander's family owned a Lake Forest store which sold radios and records, and as a young man he often came home from school to mind the store while his father made sales calls and deliveries.
Learning to play the saxophone in grade school, Mr. Helander formed several local bands in high school and college, and played his way to Europe in the late 1930's.
He met his future wife, Thelma Kaski, at a dance concert in Waukegan, and they married in May of 1941. They made their home in Waukegan until he was drafted into the Service in 1942. He served in the Army Signal Corps in Belgium and France until the end of World War II.
Returning home in 1946, Mr. Helander rejoined the family business, and expanded it to include stationery and office supplies.
The Helanders moved to Lake Forest in 1960. Mr. Helander was active in community affairs, and served as president of the Lake Forest Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club. He was also a founder of the Deer Path Art League and the Community Music Association, and a member of the Lake Forest Hospital Board of Directors. He held leadership roles in various industry associations.
The Helanders enjoyed the vacations they took in the motor homes they owned over the years, driving everywhere from Alaska to Mexico, and coast to coast on annual excursion trips. They were able to travel all around the world, and were active travelers until the late 1990's.
Following his retirement to Florida in 1974, Mr. Helander pursued his life-long love of music, bringing back together some old musical friends to found the Second Time Around Dance Band in Palm Beach, Florida. He played baritone saxophone in this 18-piece orchestra which ultimately performed hundreds of free concerts around South Florida recreation centers and retirement communities until 1997.
In 2002 the Helanders moved to Victory Lakes in Lindenhurst to be closer to their family.
Along with his wife, Thelma, Mr. Helander is survived by sons Charles (Mary Lee) and Clifford (Lesley), and 2 grandchildren, Matthew and Casey.
