Born in Chicago, the son of Carl William and Elsie Marie (nee Laffin) Boyke, he passed away Saturday, August 14, 2004 at his home. Burial will be in Ascension cemetery.
Mr. Boyke was raised in Zion. His mother became a widow in 1933 and by herself, raised Bruce and his five siblings during the hard Depression years. She gave her children wisdom and encouragement and taught them how to work hard, their belief in God, love of family and country and the belief that they were as good as everyone else and they could do and be whoever they wanted to be.
During high school, Bruce was the football halfback no one could catch or tackle. He left Zion Benton High School and entered the Army at the age of 16. He was recalled back to the service during the Korean War. Bruce was married
to his first wife, Kathleen McManaman, from September 16, 1950 until December 9, 1982, when Kathleen passed away after a long illness. He and Kathleen were the proud parents of five children. On March 26, 1991, he married
again, to his devoted, caring, lovely wife, Renee Peterson Boyke.
Bruce was the owner of Bruce Concrete Construction Company. "Quality Unsurpassed" was his motto that was used by him in business in Lake County for the past 47 years. He started out with a truck, shovel, wheelbarrow and by age 30, with a labor of love and hard work, became renown by many who admired him for his greatness in his ability to create a work of architecture. He built Bruce Boyke's Imperial Manor and Imperial Towers on Baldwin and Grand Ave. in Waukegan, until he sold them when he built and owned the beautiful Ramada Grand Court Inn motel in Mundelein.
Bruce served on term as Waukegan precinct committeeman in 1952. He also served one term as mayor of the Village of Green Oaks.
He loved his family, his beautiful lawns and gardens, fishing and traveling all over the world with his wife, Renee. He loved people, politics, the outdoors with trees, birds, squirrels and sun upon his face.
Charitably, Mr. Boyke gave much from a good, kind and giving heart to strangers and the catholic church. He was never selfish. He loved God, Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the saints, his wives, children, sons-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He never acted like a "big shot" but was a noble and honorable man. He was handsome and his handshake was strong.
He will be loved and missed by his widow, Renee; children, Laura (George) Cleghorn, Karen Boyke, Bruce Bradley Boyke, Blair (Michael) Deer and Kerry (Berny) Schmidt; his grandchildren, Kathleen (william) Wright, Corey Bruce Cleghorn, Joseph Carl Deer, Amber Colleen Deer, Nicholas Kerber and a beloved granddaughter, April Kelly Boyke; great grandchildren, Aurora, Rianna and Billy Wright; his siblings, Bill (Frankie) Boyke of OR, Wayne Boyke of Kenosha and Bonnie Snouffer of Las Vegas; and many nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grandnieces.
