Lula Mae Sanders
Lula Mae Sanders passed away on August 17, 2004. She was born June 23, 1936 to Eddie and Martha Harris in Jackson, MS. Lula confessed Christ and was baptized at an early age at the Pine Grove M.B. Church, in MS.
She completed her secondary education at Lanier High School in Jackson, MS. Lula moved to Chicago in the early 60's where she met her present husband Aubrey (Ricky) Sanders.
While in Illinois, Lula worked at Aimee Dress Shop (Lake Forest) for 28 years and 23 years at Service Merchandise. Lula united with St. John Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Usher Board. Later she joined the Christian Love Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Norman Taylor where she was a member of the adult choir.
Lula was a loving and giving person and will be missed by the many friends and family members who loved and cherished her. She is survived by her husband, Aubrey (Ricky) Sanders of Waukegan, IL; her sister, Dorothy (Leroy) Daniel Cage of Waukegan, IL; her brothers, Frank Harris of Chicago, IL; Robert (Doreen) Harris of Huntsville, AL; Alvester (Addie B) Kelly of Jackson, MS; and William Harris of Los Angeles, CA. Six step children, William (Melba) Holmes, Patricia (Anthony) Quinn, Hester (Ernest) Abbott, Danny (Gayle) Sanders, Rose Peters and Margie (John)Taylor). A special Godchild, Brook Collins and her special niece and nephew, Margaret Taylor and Spencer N. Harris. A host of other nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Lula is preceded in death by her first husband Robert Sweeney, her son Larry, her parents Eddie and Martha, sister Jessie George, brothers Eddie Lee, Jonny, and Spencer Harris.
Local visitation service will be held Saturday, August 21, 2004 at the Christian Love Baptist Church, 2203 Lewis Ave. in Zion, IL 60099 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Rev. Norman Taylor, Pastor officiating. Funeral services will be held in Jackson, MS on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at Pine Grove Baptist Church.

Grace E. Ullrich
Grace E. Ullrich, 87, of Antioch, IL passed away Thursday, August 19, 2004 at her home. She was born December 1, 1916 in Chicago, the daughter of the late Edward and Anna (Sommers) Thompson. She grew up in Chicago and spent summers in Long Lake. On June 24, 1939, she married Robert Ullrich in Chicago and then spent summers in Antioch before moving there permanently in 1970. Grace was a member of the Lutheran Church of All Saints of Fox Lake, the Women of the Moose Chapter #735 of Antioch and the AARP.
Survivors include two daughters, Darlene (John) Clauson of Antioch and Barbra (Ken) Grzewskowiak of Fox Lake, IL; and three grandchildren, Jennifer, David and Wendy (Richard). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert on April 13, 1993; and her brother, Roger Thompson.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Monday, August 23, 2004 at STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH, 1055 Main St. (Rte. 83) with Rev. Nathan Anderson of the Lutheran Church of All Saints of Fox Lake officiating. Interment will be in Millburn cemetery, Old Mill Creek, IL. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 PM until 5 PM. Those desiring may make donations to the Lutheran Church of All Saints, Fox Lake in her memory.

Jessie B. Bernardi
Jessie B. Bernardi, nee Belmonte, age 72 of Highwood, IL passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2002 at her home. Born October 24, 1929 in Highland Park, IL she has been a lifelong resident of Highwood. She was a retired Budget Annalysist with the Civil Service at Ft. Sheridan. She was a member of St. James Church, The Italian Women's Prosperity Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Survivors include three children, Louis "Skip" Bernardi of Gurnee, Leo (Nancy Zettler) Bernardi of Algonquin, Lorri Bernardi-Shaw (Harry Shaw) of Buffalo Grove; three grandchildren, Brien Shaw and Riley and Isabel Bernardi. She is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Annunziata Belmonte; a brother, Salvatore Belmonte and a sister Gilda Stella.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 23, 2002 at 10:00 AM at St. James Church, 134 North Avenue, Highwood. Entombment will follow at Ascension cemetery, Libertyville. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 9 PM at the Seguin & Symonds Funeral Home 858 Sheridan Rd., Highwood. Contributions to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Richard L. "Dick" Blanchard
Richard L. "Dick" Blanchard, 77, of Beach Park, died on Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at the V.A. Hospital, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Dick was born December 11, 1924 in Waukegan and had lived in this area all of his life. He was a member of Yorkhouse United Methodist Church and he retired from Johns-Manville in Waukegan. He was also a member of Lake County Shrine, the Gurnee American Legion, the Waukegan Masonic Lodge A.F. and A.M., the Winthrop Harbor V.F.W., the Zion Civil Defense, the Johns-Manville Quarter Century Club and Winthrop Harbor, Beach Park and Zion Fire and Rescue. He was also a Veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict and was the recipient of both the Purple Heart and the Silver Star.
Survivors include his children: Sandra (Sam) Hicks of Murray, Kentucky, Gail Stueck of Kenosha, Wisconson , Peggy Sams of Murray, Kentucky and Lynda (Frank) Orr of Beach Park; grandchildren: Jeffrey, Wendi, Jeanne, Shaun, Brian, Shelle, Scott, Megan, Hailee and Abby; thirteen great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Gladys Glander and Joan Klinefelter, both of Beach Park.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris "Kay" Blanchard; by one son-in-law, Bill Sams; and by his father and mother, Lawrence and Ethel (nee Bowen) Blanchard.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2002 at 7:00PM at the Gurnee American Legion Hall, 749 Milwaukee Avenue, Gurnee with the family greeting friends from 6:00PM until time of services at the Hall.

Everett Y. Bowie
Everett Y. Bowie entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, August 17, 2002 at his home in Zion.
Everett was born on June 17, 1928 in Belmont, North Carolina to the late Rev. William and Shirley Bowie.
He attended public schools there. In 1947, he enrolled in God's Bible School in Cincinnati, Ohio where he met and began courting the young lady who was later to become his wife, the love of his life and companion for the past 52 years. Everett attended Vennard College in Oskaloosa, Iowa from 1951-1953, where he furthered his studies in Bible and music. On July 28, 1950, he married Jean Hoffman in the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Morgantown, West Virginia. The Lord blessed their marriage with two daughters, Ruth Ann and Martha Jean. In later years, after raising their girls, Everett and Jean opened their home to four young foster boys, Jim and John Hogan and Brian and Chad Evans. Everett will lovingly be remembered as "Grandpa" by these young men. Everett served in the U. S. Army from 1954-1956 and was stationed in Japan. He retired from Allis Chalmers where he worked as an arc welder. After retirement, he enjoyed golfing, reading, sports, gospel music, frequent Taco Bell lunches with his wife and the companionship of their two Schnauzers, Sugar and Sweetie. From 1963-2000, Everett and Jean were active members of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Zion where Everett served as Elder and songleader. He was happy to be the "Jack-of-all-trades" guy - buffing floors and taking care of any other jobs that needed attention. During the past two years, he and Jean have been faithful attenders at Lakeview Church in Zion. Everett will be remembered for his sweet smile, love of people, strong faith and the valiant fight he so vividly demonstrated from the first day of his diagnosis until the day God called him home.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, "Jeannie"; daughters, Ruth Ann Smiley and Martha Jean (Bob) Tackett; five grandchildren, Andrea Joy, Rochelle Jean and Janelle Ruth Tackett, David Everett and Jonathan Loren Smiley; foster sons and their children, Jim (Grace) Hogan, John (Debbie) Hogan, and Brian and Chad Evans; also surviving are two sisters, Jean Briggs and Marilyn (Chester) Babcock; three brothers, Bill (Mel) Bowie, John (Nelda) Bowie and Steve (Betsy) Bowie; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Maurice.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2002 at 11 AM at Lakeview Church, 19th and Sheridan Road, Zion with Rev. Les Martin and Rev. Marty Reynhout officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion Visitation will be Wednesday, August 21, 2002 from 5 to 8 PM at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorials to S.T.A.R. Hospice, Vista Health, 2615 Washington Street, Waukegan, 60085 for their kind and compassionate care; the Great Commission Fund of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, P.O. Box 35000, Colorado Springs, CO, 80935-3500 or Missions to Lakeview Church, Zion, Illinois.

Daniel J. Charles
Daniel J. Charles, 51, of Round Lake Beach passed away Monday, August 19, 2002 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Born April 20, 1951 in Chicago. The son of the late Robert D. Charles and Evelyn D. Sax. An Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Member of the American Legion Post #1170 of Round Lake.
He leaves his wife Lynn L. (nee Johnson) Charles; son David Joseph Charles; sisters Patricia (Kenneth) Schroeder, Linda Renda, Carol (Kirby) Church. Brothers Robert D. (Anne) Charles II, James Charles, Thomas (Kathy) Charles, John Charles, David (Rochelle) Charles. Many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at the STRANG FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM, 410 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake, IL 60030 with Fr. Alfredo Salera from St. Joseph Catholic Church of Round Lake officiating. Interment will be privately held at Queen of Heaven cemetery in Hillside. Friends of the family may visit at the Funeral Chapel on Wednesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Memorials may be made to the family in memory of Daniel.

Rosamond A. Duncan
Rosamond A. Duncan, 81, of Waukegan, IL passed away Monday, August 19, 2002 at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan. She was born August 5, 1921 in Highwood, IL and had been a Waukegan resident for the past 40 years. She was a member of St. Dismas Parish in Waukegan. Surviving are two children, Nancy Madsen of Avondale, MO and Donald Duncan of Waukegan; two grandchildren, Mark Madsen, Julie (Matthew) Alexander and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer W. Duncan and her sister Marian Werkman.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Friday, August 23 at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Ave (Rt. 176) Libertyville. Interment will follow at Ascension cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Friday. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association in her memory.

Leo J. Fox
Leo J. Fox, 91 years old, of Bristol, WI, formerly of Antioch, IL., passed away Monday, August 19, 2002, at Condell Medical Center, Libertyville, IL. He was born October 20, 1910, in Chicago, the son of the late Anton and Lucille (Hittel) Fox. He moved to Antioch permanently in 1946 after spending time at their summer home on East Loon Lake. Leo was a member of St. Peter Church and a former member of the Antioch Lions Club. His special interests included hunting, fishing, woodworking and he was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. On May 10, 1930, he married Ann S. Burkhart in Crown Point, IN. He and his wife owned and operated Leo J. Fox Trucking and Excavating in Antioch from 1947 until their retirement in 1969. She preceded him in death on September 26, 1999, after nearly seventy years of marriage.
Survivors include his daughter, Diana Buchta of Bristol, WI; one sister, Ella Knisley of Round Lake, IL.; six grandchildren, Laurence (Kyta) Buchta, Lance (Marie) Buchta, Leann (B.W.) Larson, Lorin (Allan) Jacobsen, Michael Leber and Audra Leber; 13 great grandchildren, Michael, Michelle, Kyle, Alicia, Chad, Melissa, Brittani, Leah, Bethani, Blake, Erin, Anthony and Timothy and two great great grandchildren, Brandon and Zachary. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Leber in 1976 and three brothers, Joseph, Adolph and Hubert.
Funeral services with Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, August 22, 2002, at St. Peter Church, 557 Lake St., Antioch. Interment will be in Home Oak cemetery, Antioch. Friends may call at the STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH, 1055 Main St. (Rte. 83) from 4 until 8 PM Wednesday.

Irja U. Mayala Heino
Irja Ulrikka Mayala Heino, 89, of Marshfield, WI, passed away at St. Joseph's Palliative care, Marshfield, on Monday, August 19, 2002 at 5:10 p.m. where she had been admitted on August 15, 2002.
She was born August 22, 1912 in Vaasa, Finland. Irja came to the USA as a young bride in 1930 and lived in Barron, Wisconsin. She moved to Waukegan, Illinois where she spent many years raising her family. She retired to Lantana, Florida. In 1999 she returned to Wisconsin to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was a musical actress in the Finnish Theatre and performed for many years in Waukegan, IL and Lantana, FL. She was a member of the Ladies of Kaleva. She was soloist in the Finnish National Choir and the Finnish Lutheran Church Choir of Lantana. She is a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir. She was lovingly known as "Aiti" to her family.
In 1929 she married Henry Mayala in Vaasa, Finland. He died in 1969. She later married Arvo Heino in 1979. He died in 1994. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Heikkie Pitka-Aho and Lempi Saari.
Survivors include a son Arne (Carol) Mayala of Stillwater, MN; 2 daughters Anita Isom of Jackson, WY and Rita (LeRoy) Hollingsworth of Marshfield, WI; 8 grandchildren Jennifer (Peter) Marutiak of Alburquerque, NM, Jim Hollingsworth of Waukegan, IL, Leslie (Bruce) Habjan of Loveland, OH, Mitch Hollingsworth of Key West, FL, Nina (David) Decker of Cohasselt, MN, Lisa (Dan) McMullen of Gurnee, IL, John (Joan) Dixon of Skokie, IL and Diana (Mike) Eden of Jackson, WY; 13 great grandchildren Peter LeRoy Marutiak, Jeffrey and Alex Habjan, Amanda, Nicole and Kristen Decker, Brandon and Brian Rouse, Elaine, Billy and Tommy Dixon, and Henry and Vivian Eden; and 2 sisters Hilka Koskinen and Helvi Alskook, both of Finland.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Marshfield (Nasonville-Town of Lincoln), with Rev. Daniel J. Behnke, Pastor officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated in her name to Grace Lutheran Child Care Center. REMBS/KUNDINGER FUNERAL HOME is assisting the family with arrangements.

Delbert Hofer

Delbert Hofer, 68, of Peoria, Arizona and formerly of Elgin and Waukegan, Illinois, left this world for everlasting life on Monday, August 19, 2002.

Katherine "Kay" Kovacek
Katherine "Kay" Kovacek, 80, of North Chicago, Illinois, died Tuesday, August 20, 2002 at Pinnacle Nursing Center in Waukegan, IL after a lengthy illness.
She was born July 6, 1922 in Waukegan, IL to the late Mike and Manda (nee Bandovich) Macinovich. She retired from the Personal Department at Naval Regional Medical Center, Great Lakes, IL after many years of service. Previous to that she worked at Cyclone Fence. She was a member of American Croation Waukegan Tamburitzan Club, Croatian Fraternal Lodge #75, North Chicago Senior Citizens, AARP Chapter 150, NARFE, North Chicago Women's club, Slovene Pensioners Club, and Steelworkers Retirees Club. She was a graduate of Waukegan Township High School and Lake County College of Commerce.
Kay is survived by her husband, Albert Kovacek; a son, Duane Kovacek and a granddaughter, Kristan Kovacek, both of Gurnee. Also, cousins Emil and Rudy Bandovichadn Mary Brooks. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 23, 2002 at Salata Funeral Home 729 14th St., North Chicago, IL. Burial will follow at North Shore Garden of Memories. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, at the Salata Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Kays's memory to the Croation Cultural Center.
