John F. Romer
John F. Romer, 92 years old of Kenosha, Wisconsin, formerly of Antioch, IL. and Bristol, WI., passed away Sunday, August 19, 2001 at the Brookside Care Center, Kenosha, WI. He was born July 10, 1909 in Chicago, the son of the late Ludvig and Bertha (Frandsen) Romer. He graduated from New Trier High School in Chicago, Purdue University and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. John was a member of the United Methodist Church of Antioch and was a Lay leader, former member and officer of Antioch Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a former Antioch Lions Club member. He operated the Romer Insurance Agency in Antioch for several years and after his retirement worked as a greeter at the State Bank and in inventory control for the Formost Liquor Store in Antioch. On January 26, 1934 he married Dorothy Enchelmayer in Glencoe, IL., and she preceded him in death on August 29, 1996.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Judith (Bill) Nauman of Antioch, IL., and Susan (Jim) Simpson of Sylvania, OH., six grandchildren: Rob (Julie) Nauman, Ron (Janet) Nauman, Sue (Paul) Fries, Brad (Kelly) Nauman, Jeff (Judie) Simpson and Scott (Andrea) Simpson, and 7 great grandchildren: Bryan, Sara, Tyler, Emily, Cydney, Zoe and Benjamin.
Memorial Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 8, 2001 at the United Methodist Church of Antioch, 848 Main St., Antioch, IL. with the Rev. Gary L. Curl officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Church in his memory. Arrangements are entrusted to the STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH.

Buster Schumann
Buster Schumann, 72 years old, of Salem, WI passed away Monday, August 20, 2001 at his home.
He was born January 29, 1929 in Saginaw, MI, living most of his life in the Salem, WI and Antioch, IL area. Buster was a handyman and had worked for Bernie's Corner and other businesses in the area. He often performed as a clown for people in the area nursing homes.
Survivors are seven children, Pam (Pete) Blenkle and Sandra Burnett of Round Lake, IL, Dawn Smith of Charleston, IL, Wendy (Christopher) Ryan of Kenosha, WI, John (Sherrill) Schumann of Summerville, SC, Kathleen (Gary) Jannotte of North Cape Coral, FL and Crystal (Leonard) Clark of Antioch, IL; four brothers, Robert, Stan, Tom and Junior; two sisters, Peggy and Betty; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard, Jr., Pat and Larry.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00p.m., Thursday, August 23, 2001 at the STRANG FUNERAL HOME, 1055 Maine St.,(Rte. 83), Antioch, IL. Interment will be private. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4:00p.m. Thursday until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers donation may be made to a family memorial.

Ruth C. Sloman
Ruth C. Sloman, 93, of Lindenhurst, died Tuesday, August 21, 2001, at Victory Lakes Continuing Care Center. She was born April 15, 1908 in Ocanto, WI.
She was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church, the Waukegan Womens Club. Ruth also belonged to many Bridge Clubs.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary (Keith) Solko; four grandchildren, Tiffany Topcik, Terri (Scott) Hardin, Trisha (Terry) Musich, Tim Topcik; seven great grandchildren, T.J. , Travis and Tracie Musich, Ain and Alexis Hardin, Trevor and Tyler Topcik; one sister, Harriet Bishop; a nephew Bob Anderson, and niece Betty Brown and many other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Mary and John Cook; her husband Edgar C. Sloman
Memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, August 24, 2001 at the 1st United Methodist Church in Waukegan.
Burial will be private.

David Thomas Sloop
David Thomas Sloop, 33, of Waukegan died Tuesday, August 21, 2001 in Provena St. Therese Medical Center.
He was born March 9, 1968 in North Kingston, RI. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.
David was a plumber by trade having worked for Water Tight Plumbing in Beach Park. David was a free spirit who viewed life as a marvelous adventure. He found joy in hobbies and sports such as boxing, skateboarding, roller blading, snow boarding and motorcycling.
Survivors include his mother, Charron Sloop, Waukegan; father, David (Sharron) Sloop, Yadkinville, NC; two sisters, Cindy and Michelle Sloop; a nephew, Brandon; a niece, Miranda; and an aunt, Rene Davern.
Funeral Mass Friday, August 24, 2001 at 10 AM in Immaculate Conception Church. Interment, Ascension cemetery.
Visitation from 5 to 8 PM Thursday only at MARSH FUNERAL HOME OF WAUKEGAN, 1521 Washington St.
Memorials to the family would be appreciated.

Marie E. Hogarth
Marie E. Hogarth, 85, of Libertyville, IL passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at the ManorCare Health Services in Libertyville. She was born February 1, 1918 in Eisenbach, Germany and came to live in the United States as a child. Marie was a former resident of Arlington Heights and has lived in Libertyville for the past five years. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville and was an active resident at the Liberty Towers, especially enjoying playing cards with her friends.
Surviving are her daughter, Linda (Robert) Rohleder of Libertyville; five grandchildren, Allison Rohleder, Amy (Bill) Graves, Richard Hogarth, Melissa (Eric) Johnson and Heather Hogarth; two great grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law, Linda Hogarth of Barrington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, August and Katherine Kaiser; by her husband, Fred Hogarth in 1987; and by her son, Fred Hogarth, Jr.. in 2002.
Funeral Services will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, August 23 at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Ave. (Rt. 176), Libertyville. Interment will follow at St. Michael's cemetery in Palatine. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 AM until time of services on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in her memory.

Florence Irene Jordan
Florence Irene Jordan, 96, of Zion, affectionately known as "Fiji", went home to be with her Lord on Monday, August 18, 2003 at Sheridan Health Care Center in Zion.
Fiji was born June 29, 1907 in Redfield, Kansas. Her father brought his family to Zion in 1917 when he became an Elder in the Christian Catholic Church. After graduating from high school, Fiji went to work for the Zion Industries, retiring in 1972.
She leaves to celebrate her life and her passing into glory her sister-in-law, Dorothy Jordan of Prescott, Arizona; two nieces, Jeanne (Charles) Roth of Prescott, Arizona and Genevra Ower of Zion; two great nephews, Douglas (Diane) Ower of Zion and Dwight (Suzanne) Ower of Beach Park; and a great niece, Lynette (Jeff) Yarbrough of Beach Park. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Laura Jordan; brothers, Clarence, Ralph, Wilfred, Harold and Glenn; a sister, Louise (the late Roy) Ower; and a nephew, Donald Ower.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 10:30 AM at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion with Pastor Jon Wiziarde of Christ Community Church of Zion officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion. Visitation will be Saturday, August 23, 2003 from 10 AM until time of services at the funeral home. Dennis E. Murphy
Dennis E. Murphy, 28, of Waukegan, formerly of North Chicago, passed away on Friday, August 15, as a result of injuries from a motorcycle accident in Beach Park.
Dennis was born on February 20, 1975 in Yokosuka, Japan. He graduated from North Chicago High School in 1993 and married his wife Amy on February 14, 1997 in Gurnee. Dennis worked for Pepsi-Cola in Gurnee as a truck driver and enjoyed playing guitar in the band "Dead Switch". He was an animal lover, enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, riding his motorcycle, fishing, camping and making people laugh.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Amy, a son Christopher Isiah, and a daughter, Jordan Renee, his father and mother John and Yoshiko Murphy of North Chicago, brothers and sisters John (Keiafia) Murphy Jr. of Zion, Philip Murphy of Gurnee, and Atsushi and Makoto Murphy of North Chicago. Also surviving are his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Randy and Gayle Lybrook of Beach Park and brother-in-law Christopher Lybrook of Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Katsu Mori. He will greatly be missed by many close friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 4:00 P.M. at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, (746-1234). The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the Murphy's Children Trust Fund.

William K. Philipp
William K. Philipp, 76, of Waukegan, IL, passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at Victory Memorial Hospital in the company of his loving family. He was born March 14, 1927 in Waukegan Township, IL and remained a life long resident. He was retired from Abbott Laboratories after 37 years of service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Waukegan, Masonic Lodge, Anchor and Ark Lodge #1027 of Waukegan. William was an avid Packer fan and was looking forward to the White Sox winning the World Series. He especially enjoyed playing golf and being with his family. He was an Army Veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his loving children, Gary (Adonna) of Lake Villa, Gail (Mark) Dufresne of Beach Park, Greg (Pat) of Lakewood, WA, Gay (Don) Rome of Zion and Grant (Linda) of Salem, WI; 14 grandchildren, Laural, Heather, Bryan, Mark Jr., Kyle, Scott, David, Dalene, Melonie, Todd, Andrea, Jennifer, Allen, Alex and one great granddaughter, Ashleyn. Also a brother, Lawrence (Jean) Philipp of Waukegan and a sister, Ruth Ann (Al) Bratzke of Gurnee and his fiancee, Carol Farr.
William was preceded in death by his wife Betty (nee Hill) in 1978, a brother Donald Philipp, two sisters Gloria Mathis and Diana Hansen and a granddaughter, Debra Ann Philipp.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 22 at the SALATA GURNEE FUNERAL HOME, 4190 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee, IL with services to be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 23 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Warren cemetery in Gurnee.

Sandra Ann Pierce
Sandra Ann Pierce, 40, of Zion, passed away Sunday August 17, 2003 at Evanston Northwestern Medical Center. She was born January 23, 1963 in Salem County, NJ. She loved to garden and take care of her cats.
Survivors include her husband of 17 years, Terry; a son Terry, Jr. at home; a daughter Samantha, also at home; a step-daughter Melody of Florida; her parents, Walter and Alice Johnson of Lindenhurst; a sister Kathy (Jim) Gilliland of Lindenhurst; and two brothers Walter (Charmaine) Johnson of Gurnee and William "Bill" (Maria) Johnson of Round Lake Beach.
Funeral services will be held at 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2003 at MARSH FUNERAL HOME OF WAUKEGAN, 1521 Washington St., with Rev. Gehl Devore officiating. Interment will be private. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. For information call (847) 336-0127.

Marie Antionette Gatewood-Smith
Marie Antionette Gatewood-Smith, age 69, of Waukegan, IL passed away on Friday, August 15, 2003 at the St. Therese Medical Center, Waukegan, IL.
She was born in Waukegan, IL on June 16, 1934. She confessed a belief in Christ at an early age and was baptized at the First Baptist Church, North Chicago, IL. She later joined Trinity A.M.E. Church, Waukegan, IL.
Ann was a past member of the Les Amis Civic and Social Club, a past member of the Calendar Club and a current member of the American Business Women's Association. She volunteered as a tutor at Hyde Park Elementary School in Waukegan. She was also a volunteer for the Waukegan Township Park Place Senior Center.
"Annie" is survived by her husband, John C. Smith; a daughter, Antoine L. Smith; a son, John C. Smith, II; a stepdaughter, Wanda Smith of Greenville, AL; a sister, Loretta Mills; seven grandchildren, Shirelle Newbill of Tennessee, Antonio (Keisha) Carter, Nazlah Y. Smith, Ellis Smith, Jamarcus Smith, Convonta (Justin) Stone and Quinlan D. Smith; four nieces, Cheryl Ali of Detroit, MI, Juanita Porter of Washington, DC, Courtnee (Frederick) McCullough of Macon, GA and Kendall Mills; two great nieces, one great nephew and a host of other relatives and very dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Gatewood, a sister, Shirley Embree and her grandparents, Cora Carroll and Calvin Pollard.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2003 at the Trinity A.M.E. Church, 210 South Avenue, Waukegan, IL. Pastor Reginald Blount, officiating. Visitation will begin at the church at 10 a.m. Interment will be private. Arrangements by BRADSHAW & RANGE FUNERAL HOME, 2513 Dugdale Road, Waukegan, IL 847-662-3553.

Howard F. Vander Bloomen
Howard F. Vander Bloomen, age 81, passed away at his home Tuesday, August 19, 2003. U.S. Army Veteran of the Pacific Theater during World War II. Howard's interests included gardening, games and sports. He was known as a gifted athlete who enjoyed following the White Sox and Packers. He will be best remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Recently celebrated his 51st anniversary on March 15, 2003.
His loving wife Wallene survives to cherish his memory. Also surviving are three sons, Leonard (Colette), Darrell (Rhonda), and Greg (Carolyn) Vander Bloomen and one daughter Pamela (Gregg) Wallace, along with seven grandchildren. He also leaves his brother Claude Vander Bloomen, two sisters, Velma (Ed) Gembra and Vera Wilson.
Memorial service will be held at 2pm Sunday, August 24, 2003 at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 10 S. Lake St., Mundelein, IL 60060 (847) 566-8081.
