He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jacob and Matilda (Stoffel) his son-in-law, Ross G. Berry, a nieces Rosemarie Thelen Rose and a nephew, Franz Josef Aldenbrook III.
Vern was the founding father of Thelen Sand & Gravel, Inc. of Antioch, IL. When he was just 13 years old, he began selling sand and gravel that he hand shoveled from a corner of his father's farm property into a horse drawn wagon. He sold the materials to neighbors for their beachfront lots in the area now known as Pistakee Highlands. In 1947, he purchased his first gravel truck, and Thelen Sand & Gravel became a reality. The production and sales of ready-mixed concrete was added in 1961, and today, materials continue to be mined and sold from the main operation in Antioch, and concrete is produced at three area ready mix plants, in Antioch & Waukegan, IL, and in Wilmot, WI.
Vern was an avid golfer who excitedly bragged of "beating his age" 19 times this golf season. He delighted in taking every opportunity to get in a round of golf, and was even known to have completed 36 holes of golf in one day earlier this summer. He and his wife enjoyed many years of sightseeing and traveling across America, Canada and Mexico in their motor home, and were members of the Foretravel Motorcade Club. They made several trips with their grandchildren to show and share with them the many beautiful wonders of the United States. They also made numerous foreign trips, including a cruise through the Panama Canal to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, and more recently, a trip to the Scandinavian countries in 2002. Until just a few years ago, Vern enjoyed downhill snow skiing with his friends and family. He was very proud of the fact that he was able to continue skiing past the age of 70.
Vern was a member of the Rotary Club International, and he spearheaded the creation of both the Antioch and the Fox Lake Rotary Clubs. He had been the last remaining charter member of the Antioch Rotary Club. He served as president of the Antioch Club from 1977-1978, and was also involved in establishing the Antioch Rotary Club's Annual Pork Chop Dinner and Auction, which is still held every fall. He was honored in 1993 as the Antioch Rotary's Man of the Year. He was the recipient of the Self Above Service Awards in 1977 & 1978 and of the District 644 Governor's Award. He served on the board of directors of the Recreational Vehicle Fellowship of Rotarians for six years, and as President from 1987 to 1989. Vern was formally cited as a major donor to the International Rotary Foundation at a ceremony held in the year 2000. The Paul Harris Fellowship Award has been bestowed upon Vern, and as of 2002, he had sponsored a total of 38 additional members of his family as Paul Harris Fellows. Through the years, Vern and his family hosted Rotary exchange students from Iceland, France, Norway and Germany in their home, and entertained countless others. He served on the Antioch Club's Outward Bound Exchange Student Selection Committee. Vern also participated in the Antioch Rotary Club's Food for the Needy Thanksgiving Basket deliveries for several years. Local 4-H and Youth Group Members from Lake & McHenry Counties in Illinois and Kenosha & Racine Counties in Wisconsin were well aware of the generous contributions and participation by Vern in their activities and fair auctions.
Vern served on the Board of Directors of the Fox Lake State Bank for 29 years, and was a Lotus Elementary School Board Member for 15 years where he served as President for several terms. Vern's many business associations include serving as President and Board of Directors member of the Northern Illinois Ready Mixed Concrete Association, and membership in the Illinois Ready Mixed Concrete Association and Lake and McHenry County Contractors Groups.
In recent years, Vern took a keen interest in his family history, and he had compiled genealogy charts, maps and copies of an assortment of legal records, photographs and letters. He had traced his ancestors back to his great-great grandfather, who had arrived in New York in 1842, before moving his family to the Midwest, specifically, to the settlement of Johnsburg, IL. Vern was intrigued by the documentations that he was able to find, and was always stopping in the office or visiting with relatives or friends to share his information. In the summer of 2003, he, his brother, and a cousin arranged a family reunion in Elkhorn, WI, to allow some of the members of the younger generations of their extended families to peruse their photographs, letters, charts, and documents, and in many cases, meet each other for the first time.
Vern's integrity, love and, of course, his famous stories will be deeply missed by his family, and by his innumerable dear friends, golfing buddies, and business associates.
Funeral services with Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 2, 2003 at St. Peter Church, 2206 Main, Spring Grove, IL. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
