JACK D. RIXIE
On August 22, 1929, Dallas and Callie Rixie of Brookport, Ill. were blessed with a newborn, Jack Devear Rixie.
The Rixies are a family of proud German heritage. Friedrich and Reakie Rixie arrived from Germany in 1851; having 10 sons and daughters. Son Frederick William Rixie married
Dennie Reynolds, and they had 10 sons and daughters. Son Dallas Rixie married
Callie Metcalf and they had 7 sons.
In Jacks youth and early adulthood, he found great solace in working the farm. He had an innate ability in horsemanship, growing farm crops, and reaching out and touching the animals of the wild. Much to his grin, he fed the birds and squirrels outside his home up through his last days. The peace found in that daily ritual was priceless. Though raised in the Metropolis, Illinois area. Over the course of Jack's life he served in the US Army, Jack was stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. He often touted the contributions his Unit made to building up the infrastructure of the last frontier. When Jack came to Waukegan, everyone who knew him found he was a man of many talents and interests. He spent many years around the Waukegan Speedway, driving cars for Miller & Son Auto Parts in Gurnee, and a lot of memories in that junk yard. Jack retired from Johnson Motors in Waukegan.
Jack's greatest gift was his selfless want to help his fellow man - a Good Samaritan. He had an ora about him which invited many opportunities for him to just listen to the woes of friends, and more often then not, he found himself extending a helping hand in some form or another, many of which were at the expense of himself and sometimes his family. It is that value of selflessness to the betterment of his fellow man that he left his children as a legacy to follow.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents Callie and Dallas Rixie; five brothers, Norvel, Amos, Buddie, Gene, and Ronnie; his son Jack (Skipper) Rixie and infant twins, Granddaughters Danielle and Christine Rixie and Great Grandson.
Jack is survived by a daughter, Nicole (Rixie) Weaver of Florida, and sons Dan and Kelly of Illinois, and Howard, Michael, and Dale Rixie of Alaska; first wife Diane Rixie, and second wife Sandy Rowley; and 21 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and brother Tom (Audry) Rixie.
In the last years of Jack's life he returned to the Metropolis area, where he passed away on his birthday, August 22, 2004, in Simpson, IL. True to Jack's simple way, his ashes were spread across the graves of his mother, father and children. Surviving loved ones will sorely miss him and have a great legacy to follow.
