Mary Jean Mehaffey
Mary Jean Mehaffey, 67 years old of Naples, FL and Antioch, IL passed away Thursday, September 11, 2003 at Lake Forest Hospital, Lake Forest, IL. She was born February 3, 1936 in Lake Wales, FL, the daughter of the late Joseph and Crecy Elizabeth (Bellflower) Gaskins and has lived most of her life in Florida and Antioch. She attended the United Methodist Church and was a member of the P.E.O. Mary Jean was active in Newspaper Associations, was a member of the Women's Aglow, the Business and Professional Women of America and was honored in the Women in Business Who's Who Directory. On December 17, 1955 she married
John A. Mehaffey in Lake Wales, FL and has assisted him in business for many years.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Mark Allen (Elizabeth "Beth") Mehaffey of Antioch, Scott David Mehaffey of Aurora, IL and Chris Douglas (Teresa) Mehaffey of Antioch; three brothers, Rev. Morris (Marie) Gaskins of Brooksville, FL, Jack (Olive) Gaskins of Brooksville, FL and Jerry (Fay) Gaskins of Rainsville, AL and three grandsons Lance Allen, Justin Earl and Ryan Douglas Mehaffey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Gaskins.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 16, 2003 at the United Methodist Church, 848 Main St. (Rte. 83) Antioch, with Pastor Gary L. Curl, officiating. Interment will be in Hillside cemetery, Antioch. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 PM Monday at STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH, 1055 Main St. (Rte. 83) Antioch and from 9:00 AM Tuesday until the time of services at the Church. Those desiring may make contributions to the Antioch Rescue Squad in her memory.
Timothy Shields
Timothy Shields, 42, of Basset, WI, passed away Monday, September 8, 2003 at his home. He was born October 22, 1960 in Waukegan, and worked in construction and demolition.
Survivors include his daughter Crystal; brothers and sisters Carl, Debra (Mark "Ronnie") Fairbanks, Linda Poddock, Patricia Romero and James; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Dorothy, and a brother Leo, Jr.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 18, 2003 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Marsh Funeral Home of Waukegan, 1521 Washington St. with a Memorial Service being held at 8:00 p.m. Arrangements by National Cremation Service, 5601 N. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60659.
Rita N. Steffenhagen
Rita N. Steffenhagen, 92, of Fremont Township, passed away Thursday, September 11, 2003 at the home of her daughter in Wauconda. She was born September 28, 1910 in Chicago and moved to the Sylvan Lake area of Mundelein in 1973. She and her husband lived briefly in Lanark, IL, retired to Brooksville, FL in 1977 and have lived in Saddlebrook Farms in Grayslake for the past 7 years. She was a member of St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish in Fremont Center where she was a former member of the church choir. Rita had also been an operator for the Illinois Bell Telephone Co. and secretary to the administrator at Carmel High School.
Surviving are three children, William (Ann) Steffenhagen of Mundelein, Mary K. Geary of Sharon, WI and Margaret (John) Janiszewski of Wauconda; twelve grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Catherine Fleming, by her husband William on January 5, 2002, by her daughter Barbara Behm in 1991, by her sisters, Helen, Kitty and Mary and brothers, John and Bill.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 16 at St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church (new church) in Fremont Center. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Monday at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Ave. (Rt. 176) Libertyville and from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to the church building fund or masses would be appreciated.
Roberta Jane Tate
Roberta Jane Tate, 77, of Gurnee, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11, 2003 at St. Therese Medical Center. She was born December 17, 1925 in Virden, IL to John and Alice Wrench. She graduated Deland High School and moved to Peoria, IL where she met Virgil L. Tate. They married
in Monticello, IL on February 3, 1946 then moved to Waukegan in 1952. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper. She loved ceramics, crafts, camping, traveling, being with friends and country music. She was a devoted wife to her husband Virgil. They were like two peas in a pod.
Roberta is survived by her husband Virgil; two sons, Gary (Debbie) Tate of Wildwood, IL and Michael (Lois) Tate of Missoula, MT; six grandchildren, Lisa Tate of Kihei, Hawaii, Marcella Tate of Missoula, MT, Heather Peterson of Minnesota, Shawn Tate of California, Kim Benedict of Waukegan, and Scott Tate of Antioch; ten great grandchildren; and her brother John Wrench of Deland, IL. She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
Gary and Michael wish to express their appreciation to Dad, her hero, who cared for Mom 24/7 showing his love and devotion to her... Thanks Dad.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at MARSH FUNERAL HOME OF GURNEE, 305 cemetery Rd. Interment is at Millburn cemetery, Millburn, IL. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to a charity of your choice.
Mario Concepcion Avalos
Mario Concepcion Avalos, age 42, of Waukegan, formerly of CA and UT, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2004 at Condell Medical Center, Libertyville. He was born December 8, 1961 in Mexico, the son of Ezequiel and Maria (nee Mora) Avalos.
He was employed by Knaack, and for five years as a butcher at Reyes Grocery in Waukegan.
He took great pleasure in the volunteer work he did for the community. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, taking nature walks and camping. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his great sense of humor and playful nature.
Survivors include his five children, Abraham Avalos of Waukegan, Moises Avalos of Salt Lake City, UT, Evyesmeralda Avalos of Salt Lake City, Monica Avalos of Salt Lake City and Mario Avalos, Jr. of Salt Lake City; one grandchild, Moises Avalos, Jr.; his father, Ezequiel Avalos of Mexico; a sister, Maria Elena (Fernando) Gamez of Waukegan; six brothers, Benito Avalos of Mexico, Ignacio (Maria) Avalos of Waukegan, Antonio Avalos of Mexico, Sergio (Julia) Avalos of Salt Lake City, Alejandro (Linda) Avalos of Milwaukee, WI and Norverto (Maria Rebecca) Avalos of Waukegan; his former wife, Andrea Cuevas of Salt Lake City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Maria; and his niece, Monica.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 14, 2004, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at MARSH FUNERAL HOME of Waukegan, 1521 Washington St. The funeral service will be held at 10 AM today (Wednesday) at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 411 N. O'Plaine Rd., Gurnee.
Ernest G. Black
Ernest G. Black, the beloved son of Tom and Alice Black was born April 22, 1911 in Como, MS, one of nine children. He passed away on September 8, 2004 at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in North Chicago, IL.
He accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and joined the Mt. Level M.B. Church in Como, MS. He came to Waukegan, IL as a young man and joined the Trinity AME Church. He was an usher for many years and also served as a Trustee. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by a daughter, Alice (Roger) Hawkins of Batesville, MS; two sisters, Olivette Ellis of Sardis, MS and Marsha Orr of Como, MS; two nephews, Hartridge (Mary) Black of Sardis, MS and Walter (Mary) Taylor of Memphis, TN; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; a special friend, Betty Shellie; a godson, Victor Lang of Steger, IL; a goddaughter, Eugenia Lindsey of Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Friday, September 17, 2004 at the Trinity AME Church, 210 South Avenue, Waukegan, IL with Pastor Reginald Blount officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Margaret L. Course
Margaret L. Course, 93, of Round Lake passed away Saturday, September 11, 2004 at the Pleasant Lake Villa in Parma, Ohio. She was born August 24, 1911 in Chicago and had been a Round Lake resident since 1963. She was a member of the Women's Club, Garden Club and United Protestant Church, all in Grayslake.
Surviving are her son, Gary Course of Parma, Ohio; her granddaughter, Jennifer Course of Brattleboro, VT; a nephew, Michael Course; and nieces, Shirley Kohl, Lyn Westphal, Geri Course and Sharon Derrick.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gustaf and Selma Anderson; by her husband, Edward Course in 1975; and by her sister, Evelyn Westphal.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, September 16, 2004 at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Ave (Rt. 176), Libertyville. Interment will follow at Ridgewood cemetery in Des Plaines. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 8 PM on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Protestant Church in her memory.
George E. Doyle, III
George E. Doyle, III, 61 years old of DeLand, FL formerly of Gurnee, IL passed away Sunday, September 12, 2004 at his son's home. He was born August 27, 1943 in Waukegan, IL the son of the late George E. and Lucille (Irey) Doyle. In 1960, he moved to DeLand and later served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. After 25 years of service with the DeLand Police Department he retired as a commander in 1992. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting, golfing, cooking and the outdoors.
Survivors include two sons, George IV of Buford, SC and Robbie (Betty) of DeLand, FL; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Brittany; two sisters, Mary (Dieter) Schmidtke of Lindenhurst, IL and Analee (Gerald) Sosnoski of Wadsworth, IL; one brother, William (Carolyn) Doyle of Colorado Springs, CO; his aunt, Dorothy Schaufel of Gurnee; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 17, 2004 at Millburn cemetery, Old Mill Creek, IL. Visitation and funeral services were held in DeLand, FL. Local arrangements were handled by the STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH, IL.
Juanita Iola Howe
Juanita Iola Howe, passed away at the age of 95 years old, on Sunday, September 12, 2004, at Victory Memorial Hospital. Juanita was born in Fewsburg, NY, in 1909 the oldest of nine children of Rev. Hugh and Flora Atkins. Juanita was the wife of Rev. Gilbert L. Howe (deceased), former residents of Kenosha, WI. She lived in Kenosha and continued to be active in the ministry of her husband, then GIs for Christ. In the late seventies, she moved to North Chicago where she remained active in the continuing ministry of her late husband until she moved into the Terrace Nursing Home in Waukegan, IL.
A talented musician, she sang and played piano and vibraphone around the country and on radio during her husband's broadcasts during WWII and was a regular pianist at North Shore Baptist Church, North Chicago, IL. Juanita was known for her Bible knowledge and teaching and was an accomplished writer. Before her loss of sight during the last few years of her life, she managed to write a significant book of her husband's life.
She is survived by two brothers, Mr. Charles Atkins of Russell, PA, and Mr. Russell Atkins of Lebanon, PA; and her four children, Dr. G. LeRoy Howe of Corpus Christi, TX, Mrs. Carol Whiteside (wife of Rev. Douglas E. Whiteside) of Vineland, NJ, Rev. Joseph P. Howe of North Chicago, IL, and Mrs. Joy Baxter (wife of Rev. William Baxter) of Vallejo, CA, and their families.
Visitation 6 to 8 PM Thursday at MARSH FUNERAL HOME and from 9 to 10 AM Friday at North Shore Baptist Church, 1118 Sheridan Rd., North Chicago. Funeral Services will be held Friday at 10 AM North Shore Baptist Church. Burial Green Ridge cemetery, Kenosha, WI.
Bernice Kaufman
Bernice Kaufman, a long time Grayslake resident, passed away Monday, September 13, 2004 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, at the age of 89.
Bernice was a member of St. Gilbert Church in Grayslake for over 55 years, and an avid thrift store and garage sale patron.
She is survived by her son Larry (Jeanne) Kaufman of Winthrop Harbor, sister Valerie Trust of Michigan, niece Michelle (Bob) Ross of Michigan, great niece Jennifer Bell of Waukegan, and her wonderful neighbors Bob & Edna Bobenem, and Bob & Mary Higgins.
Her husband Ralph Kaufman, brothers Lawrence, Frank, and Williard Trust precede her in death.
Friends of the family may visit on Friday, September 17, 2004 from 10 to 11 a.m. at STRANG FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATORIUM, 410 E. BELVIDERE RD., GRAYSLAKE, IL 60030. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Friday, September 17, 2004 at St. Gilbert Catholic Church, 301 E. Laura J. Loveless
Laura J. Loveless, 72 years old of Casselberry, Florida, formerly of Antioch, IL passed away Saturday, September 11, 2004 at her home. She was born March 23, 1932 in Caruthersville, MO, the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Dovie J. (DeFries) Franks. She had lived in Antioch from 1964 until 1994, moving to San Diego, CA for ten years and recently to Florida.
On October 27, 1948 she married
Thomas A. Loveless in Manila, Arkansas and he preceded her in death in December of 1986.
Survivors include her son, Jeffrey (Rebecca) Loveless of Casselberry, Florida; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Betty (Maurice) Smith and Virginia Wagner.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Dale Loveless in 1989.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, September 16, 2004 with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. at STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH, 1055 Main St. (Rte. 83) Antioch. interment will be in Hillside cemetery, Antioch, IL.
James Joseph Paulley
James Joseph Paulley, age 80, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2004 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. James was born in Chicago on October 6, 1923 to William and Anne (nee Burn) Paulley. James was a Golden Gloves boxer prior to serving in World War II.
He is survived by his children, Jim (Buffy) Paulley of Grayslake and Val (Rick) Adler of Springhill, FL; grandchildren, Thomas Paulley and Joseph Paulley of Grayslake, Kevin Adler, Kenny Adler and Brian Adler all of Springhill, FL.
His wife, Clara Paulley; brother, William Paulley; and parents preceded him in death.
