LaVerne Rintoul
LaVerne Rintoul, 84, of Mundelein, IL passed away Monday, September 13, 2004 at her home. She was born February 6, 1920 in Wevaco, WV and had been a resident of Mundelein for the past 43 years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Carlisle, PA, also the Libertyville American Legion Auxiliary and volunteered at the VA Medical Center in North Chicago for 30 years.
Surviving are three children, Wayne (Sandra) Rintoul of Pleasant Prairie, WI, Agnes (Michael) Kerwin of Cary, IL and Martha Rintoul of Mundelein; six grandchildren, Karry (Eric) Reynolds, John Kerwin, Dan Rieck, Becky (John) Fleming and Ryan and Reba Rintoul; two great grandchildren, Taylor and Jordan Reynolds; and a brother, Willis Kinder of Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm Rintoul on March 1, 1997.
Private services are being held from the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME in Libertyville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 4709 Golf Rd., #1015, Skokie, IL, 60076. Info: 847-356-3009.

Martin F. Berklan
Martin F. Berklan, 73, died unexpectedly September 12, 2001, at his home in Waukegan. Born Martin Brkljacic on March 11, 1928, on the South Side of Chicago, Mr. Berklan was a long-time school teacher and principal in the Waukegan Public Schools system. After graduating from Bowen High School in South Chicago, he eventually played football at Compton (California) Junior College and the College of Idaho, in Caldwell. He completed his undergraduate teaching degree at Illinois State University and later earned a master's degree in school administration from Loyola University in Chicago.
He taught junior high school in Markham from 1955 to 1957 and then taught for two years at Webster Junior High School and seven years at Glen Flora Elementary School, both in Waukegan. He was principal of Whittier Elementary School in Waukegan from 1966 until retiring in 1984. An avid golfer, he later worked at Bonnie Brook Golf Club in Waukegan.
He was a long-time member of the American Croatian Waukegan Tamburitzans, with whom he played the brac and bass and sang. As a younger man he was a highly coveted 16-inch softball player when he moved to Lake County. He played for several notable area teams, including the Bally Muck Schlitzers, Schwery's and St. Anastasia in the Church League. Later, he developed an interest in thoroughbred horses, racing the winner Incarnation, and breeding and racing the winner Incadar.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Helen; a daughter, Lynn (David) Surico of Mt. Prospect; a son, Jim (Sandy) of Libertyville; a brother, Michael (Patricia) of Meridian, Idaho; and grandchildren, Nicole and Zachary Surico; and Matthew and Nicholas Berklan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Manda and Mate Brkljacic, and a brother, George, all formerly of South Chicago.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday and 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Peterson & Patch Funeral Home, 408 N. Sheridan Road, Waukegan. A funeral mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anastasia Roman Catholic Church, 624 Douglas, Waukegan, with interment at North Shore Garden of Memories, 14th Street and Green Bay Road, North Chicago, following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Waukegan Fire Department Rescue Squad unit or your favorite charity.

Jean D. Drozek
Jean D. Drozek 62 of Beloit, WI, since 1994, formerly of Ingleside, passed away Monday, Sept. 10, 2001 at the Beloit Hospital in Beloit. She was born on April 19, 1939 in Chicago, the daughter of George and Flora (nee: Schopfer) Smith.
Survivors include: four daughters: Debra (Travis) Jones of Janesville, WI, Denese (Charles) Costello of Springhill, FL, Cheryl (Dave) Kiander of Tampa, FL., Susie (Brian) Marion of Island Lake, IL; two sons: Anthony Drozek of Camp Lake, WI. and Michael Drozek of Burbank, IL.; her father George Smith of Burbank, IL., 14 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and Yvonne (Frank) Torrez of Millburn, IL.
She was preceded in death by her mother Flora and one son Arthur in 1959.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, September 14, 2001 at St. Gilbert Catholic Church, 301 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030 with Rev. Fr. Robert Beaven as celebrant. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park cemetery, Libertyville, IL. Visitation 4-8 p.m., Thursday, September 13, 2001 at the Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Ltd., 410 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030.

Philip J. Hanna
Philip J. Hanna, 55 of Lake Villa, passed away Thursday, September 13, 2001 at his home. He was born on March 22, 1946 in Beloit, WI, the son of the late Clyde H. and Jean H. (nee Ray) Hanna. On August 22, 1965 he married the former Arda R. Speiss in Sharon, WI.
Mr. Hanna worked in the air conditioning and heating business for 36 years, and for the past six years, he owned and operated the PJ Hanna Air Conditioning and Heating, Co., in Lake Villa. He was a member of the National Athletic Club in Fox Lake and a former member of the Lions Club of Libertyville. He was an avid fisherman and bird watcher.
Survivors include his wife, Arda Hanna of Lake Villa; six children, Matthew (Walisa Jeffries) Hanna of Round Lake; Amy (Michael) Amend; Janine Hanna; Barbara (Kenny Clark) Bischoffer; Melissa (Steven) Bryngelson all of Lake Villa; and Michael (Kelly) Hanna of Waukegan; 14 grandchildren with two on the way; brothers Michael Hanna in California and C. Timothy (Beth) Hanna in North Carolina; five sisters, Linda (Don) Shipman in North Carolina; Betty Jo (Dennis) Strom; Patricia (Richard) Boe; Kathleen Hanna all in Wisconsin; and Debra (Larry) Fiegan in Minnesota. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Hanna.
Funeral will be at 7 p.m., Saturday, September 15, 2001 at Strang Funeral Chapel and Crematorium, Ltd. 410 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030 with the Rev. Chris Fox officiating. James A. Nichols
James A. Nichols, 68, of Ingleside, Illinois passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at the Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry. He was born on August 3, 1933 in Chicago, the son of the late Harold and Elsie (nee Giese) Nichols.
Mr. Nichols was employed as a department manager at Ace Hardware in Gurnee. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed music, fishing and breeding German Shepherd dogs.
Survivors include his best friend and companion of 43 years: Wayne Koepple of Ingleside, one sister: Virginia (Dick) Neufeldt of Elk Grove Village; one brother: Jack (Joan) Nichols of Benson, AZ.; two sisters-in-law: Charlotte Nichols of Vernon Hills and Patricia (Ray) Ramirez of Naperville; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Harold II and Greg.
Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 15, 2001 at the STRANG FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATORIUM, LTD., 410 E. Beivldere Road, Grayslake, IL. 60030. Interment will follow at Mt. Emblem cemetery, Elmhurst. Visitation is from 5-9 P.M. Friday, September 14, 2001 at the funeral chapel.

Joseph B. Ogrin
Joseph B. Ogrin, 83, of Westminster, CO., formerly of Waukegan, Illinois, died Tuesday, September 11, 2001 in Denver, CO. He was born on August 5, 1918 in Waukegan, IL.
Joe was a member of American Legion, Northglenn, CO., Post 22 and past member of American Legion, Waukegan, Post 281. In 1998 Joe was inducted into the Lake Forest College Foresters Athletic Hall of Fame. Joe earned 3 varsity letters in football at Lake Forest College, he received All-Conference Honors and in his Senior year he was awarded the Clayton Mark Trophy recognizing him as the Most Valuable Player. He played on 2 undefeated teams in 1938 and 1940. After graduating in 1941, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as Amphibious Forces staff officer, seeing duty in the Pacific Theater on the USS Eldorado and participating in the battles of the Palau islands and Okinawa. After an honorable discharge, Joe accepted a position with Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, IL. He also worked for Grant/Jacob Advertising Agency, Chicago, IL., and retired from Westclox Division of General Time Corporation, LaSalle, IL. In 1976, Joe played an instrumental role in organizing fellow club members to purchase Deer Park Golf Club in Oglesby, IL. where he served as president for many years.
Joe is survived by 1 son, Douglas M. (Joyce) Orgin and 1 grandson Joseph D., all of Westminster, CO., 1 sister Rosette Vaicys of North Chicago, IL., and 1 nephew Bruce Grampo of Green Lake, WI. He was preceded in death by his wife Jean (nee Daley) and 1 son Brent.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 18, 2001 at 10:00 A.M. at BRADLEY FUNERAL HOME, 313 Tenth Street, North Chicago, IL. 60064. Interment will be in Ascension cemetery, Libertyville, IL. Visitation will be on Monday September 17, 2001.

Thomas A. Olsen
Thomas A. Olsen, 60 years old of Antioch, passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at home with his family. He was born May 23, 1941 in Chicago, the son of Thomas and Elaine (Schroeder) Olsen and had lived in Hoffman Estates before moving to the home he built in Antioch in 1979. He was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church of Antioch, the Monday Night Men's Bowling League and the Pleides Masonic Lodge of Westchester. Tom enjoyed boating, golfing, fishing, cooking, traveling and took great pride in his woodworking; building cabinets, planters, boats wheelbarrows and furniture.
Before his retirement in 1989, he worked as the manager of long distance line service with AT &T.; He also served in the US Army from 1963 until 1966. On October 13, 1968 he married Jean Heidenson in Chicago.
Survivors include his wife, Jean; his mother, Elaine Olsen of Antiock; a sister, Carole (Andrew) Burkhart, a sister-in-law, Eleanore Karnack, two nephews, Andrew (Dee Dee) and Michael Burkhart; a niece, DeAnn (Kris) Kauth all of Antioch and two great nephews, Andrew and Carter and a great niece, Kayla. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 15, 2001 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Antioch with Pastor Roger Black, officiating. Interment will be private. Friends may call at the STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH, 1055 Main St. (Rte 83) from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday and at the church from 10:00 a.m. Saturday until time of services. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the American Cancer Society, St. Stephen Lutheran Church or VITAS Hospice, 580 Waters Edge Suite 100 Lombard, IL 60148 in his memory.

Daniel L. Parks
Daniel L. Parks, 55, of Lake Villa passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at Provena St. Therese Medical Center in Waukegan. Born November 19, 1945 in Kenosha, WI.
A resident of Lake Villa the past 10 years formerly of Wildwood. Daniel worked as a driver for trucking companies and had worked for Maneval Construction Company in Grayslake. Daniel was also an avid car buff.
He leaves his mother, Marguerite (nee Walldan) of Wildwood.
He is preceded in death by his father, Lee P. Parks in 1962 and a brother, John Parks in 1965.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Sunday, September 16, 2001 at the STRANG FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM, LTD., 410 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake, IL 60030 with the Pastor Joe Mitchell of the Salem United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be privately held.

Betty Jo Paszkiewicz
Betty Jo Paszkiewicz, age 73, of Waukegan, IL died September 12, 2001 at Victory Memorial Hospital. She was born January 29, 1928 in Venus, TX. She was a member of St. Dismas Church in Waukegan. She was an assembler at Square Cogswell.
She is survived by five children, Patricia Grounds of TX, Sharon Harwood of Zion, Susan Byra of Racine, WI, Stephen Paszkiewicz of CA and Michele Gioe; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and my her mother, Lessie Turner of TX.
Time of service will be 11 a.m Friday at the MARSH FUNERAL HOME in Waukegan, 1521 Washington St. Visitation Friday at the funeral home from 10-11 a.m.. Place of burial will be Fort Sheridan cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society in her name.

Bernice C. Popiolek
Bernice C. Popiolek, 99, of Libertyville, Illinois passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at the Winchester House in Libertyville. She was born August 30, 1902 in Poland and came to live in the United States as a child. She was an Evanston resident for most of her life, living in Libertyville for the past 20 years. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville, the Polish National Alliance and the Polish Women's Alliance.
Surviving are 4 children: Jean Thommes of Arlington Heights, Stanley (Fran) Popiolek of Casa Grande, AZ., Ted (Joyce) Popiolek of Henderson, NV., and Joseph (Judy) Popiolek of Libertyville; 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, her brother Steve Paniak of San Francisco, CA., and sister Helen Lipski of Manitowoc, WI.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Mary Szcepaniak, by her husband Stanley Popiolek in 1959, by her daughter Helen Nemmers and brothers Bill and Joe and a sister, Cecelia.
Prayers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2001 at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Ave. (Rt. 176) Libertyville and services will continue to St. Joseph Church for funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Adalbert cemetery in Niles. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Winchester House in her memory.

Mabel Schmitz
Mabel Schmitz, 79, of Heather Ridge, Gurnee, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2001 in Lake Bluff. She was born January 13, 1922 in England and came to live in the United States as a child. She was a resident of Lake Forest for most of her life, living at Heather Ridge the past 11 years.
Surviving are 2 sons, Keith (Susan) Schmitz of Addison, IL., and B. Scott (Sally) Schmitz of Lake Bluff; 5 grandchildren: Alison, Amy, Larry, Michael and Troy; 2 sisters, Dolly (Dick) Curran of Barrington and Barbara (Ed) Bell of Chagrin Falls, Ohio and her brother Jim (Sharon) Badenoch of Amelia Island, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Martha Badenoch and by her husband Arthur E. Schmitz on September 3, 1998.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 15 at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Ave. (Rt. 176) Libertyville. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until time of services on Saturday. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Assn. in her memory.

William F. Storm
William F. Storm, 73, of Libertyville, Illinois died September 13 , 2001 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He was born August 13, 1928 in Freeport, IL., and had been a Libertyville resident since 1966. Mr. Storm had retired as an electrical engineer for Cherry Electric after 29 years of service. During the Korean Conflict, he had served as Fire Control Officer aboard the U.S.S. Preston. His military decorations included: The National Defense, United Nations, Navy Occupation, and Korean Service Medals. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois and was a 35 year member of St. Joseph Parish, Libertyville.
He is survived by his wife Rosalie M. (nee Amodeo), his daughters Judith-Ann Kuzma of Woodstock, and Leigh-Ann (Roberto) Rosas of Libertyville, his grandchildren: Jenna-Claire (Linas) Lisauskas, Ryan J. Miller, Aaron W. Miller and Cody R. Setser. He was preceded in death by his daughter Claire-Ann Storm Lenczuk and his son William "Billy" Storm II.
Funeral services at 11:30 A.M. Monday, September 17, 2001 at McMURROUGH CHAPEL, 101 Park Place, Libertyville. Interment will be at Ascension cemetery. Visitation on Sunday 4-8 P.M. at the funeral home.

Reino "Ray" Wicklund
Reino "Ray" Wicklund, age 85, of Mercer, WI, died Wednesday, September 12, 2001 in Waukegan, IL. He was born January 24, 1916 in Hurley, WI son of the late Iver and Alma (Maki) Wicklund. He graduated form the Lincoln High School in Hurley. On January 20, 1940 he was married to the former Olive May Pemble in Gile, WI. She preceded him in death on May 13, 1990.
In 1942 Ray and his wife moved to Waukegan, IL area. Ray retired from Johnson Motors, Waukegan in 1970 where he was employed working on aviation tacometers in the early years and later supervising the Die/Cast Outboard Motor Department. For several years he was owner/operator of the Heart of the North Bar in Mercer. Ray was a skilled carpenter, enjoyed gardening, and seeing his grandchildren always put a smile on his face.
He is survived by his daughters, Barbara (Patrick) Kennedy of Beach Park, IL, Beverly (Jon) Warren of Madison, WI and Susan Wicklund of Beach Park, IL; his sister Lila (Leonard) Coleman of Zion, IL; brother in law Adriane Mitchell of Bridgeport, CT., eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Larry, Allan, Mauri, and Arne Wicklund; sister, Aune (Adriane) Mitchell; grandsons, Robert and Brian Kennedy and granddaughter Carla Wicklund.
He will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held at the Engstrom Funeral Home, Hurley, WI on Monday September 17, 2001 at 2 p.m. Rev. Jean B. Rencontre of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Ironwood, MI will officiate. Ray's family will receive relatives and friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral on Monday. Burial will be in the Mercer cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Finnish American Festival, Inc. Route 1, Hurley, WI 54534.
