Vernie H. Plotz
Vernie H. Plotz, 77 years old, of Grayslake, formerly of Antioch, IL passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at Victory Lakes Continuing Care Center, Lindenhurst, IL. He was born November 19, 1926 in Grayslake, the son of the late Carl and Sophie (DeGraff) Plotz.
Vernie graduated from Warren High School and then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Antioch and was a former President of the Antioch Little League. He retired on December 31, 1979, as a state trooper, after 30 years of service with the Illinois State Police, and then became the Chief of Police for Island Lake from 1980-1989. He then worked for the Lake Villa School District as a school bus driver. His special interests included camping, playing cards and he loved playing with his grandchildren.
On October 25, 1952, he married
Beverly Johnston in Millburn, IL. She preceded him in death on August 13, 2001.
Survivors include his children, Rick (Linda) Plotz of Antioch, Vicki (Todd) Stenstrom of Hampshire, IL, Cindy (Peter) McBrady of Lindenhurst and Kim (Ron) Martin of Spring Grove, IL; and his 11 grandchildren, Christina and R.J. Plotz, Melanee and Bryce Stenstrom, Christopher, Daniel and Becky McBrady and Emily, Elizabeth, Jake and Luke Martin.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers; his twin, Ernie, Carl and Harold.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, October 9, 2004 at STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH, 1055 Main St. (Rte 83), with Pastor Gary L. Curl of the United Methodist Church of Antioch, officiating. Interment will be in Angola cemetery, Lake Villa. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, from 4:00 until 8:00 PM, Friday.
Stephen Paul Snider
Stephen Paul Snider of Bradenton, FL died unexpectedly on October 4, 2004 with his nephew, Mark Snider of Palm Harbor, FL at his side. Mr. Snider was born September 15, 1946 in Waukegan, IL.
He was employed for many years at OMC Johnson in Waukegan. He transferred to Burnsville, NC in 1982 where he retired after 30 years of service.
He was a highly decorated veteran having served two tours in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. Steve was also a member of Anchor and Ark Masonic Lodge #1027, Scottish Rite Mason and Tebala Shrine Temple of Rockford, IL.
Mr. Snider was preceded in death by his father and mother, Everett and Edith Snider.
Survivors include daughter, Karen Lapell of Hampton, VA, former wife, Melanie Snider of Sarasota, FL, sister, Caryl Johnson of Wilmington, NC, two brothers, Jerrold (Charlene) Snider of Grayslake and Michael (Ann) Snider of Mundelein. Further survived by two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Howard A. Stried
Howard A. "Swede" Stried, 83, of Winthrop Harbor, husband of 63 years to Jeanette (nee Fagan) Stried, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 6, 2004.
Howard was a Veteran of World War II, serving on the Amphibian Landing Force on the USS Fayette and the USS Gages in the Pacific Theater. This service earned him life membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. After his return from the War, he became a career police officer. He served 30 years on the North Chicago Police Department, retiring as Assistant Chief of Police in 1976. He then served 14 years on the Lake County Sheriff's Department. He was a life member of the Illinois Police Association and the Policeman's Benevolent Association and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 66. He fought a life long battle against crime, but he was taken from us by Mesothelioma, a rare Cancer caused by asbestos exposure. While this terrible disease took him from us, it also allowed us to meet the most wonderful person, Dr. Hedy Kindler of the University of Chicago-Mesothelioma Research Hospital. Were it not for her wonderful care and great love shown to "Grandpa" as she called him, we would not have had these last three and one half years.
"Swede" was the doting father of Judy (John) Van Dien of Winthrop Harbor, their only child and the apple of his eye; two grandchildren, Johnette Dell Van Dien of Kenosha and John K. (Kathleen) Van Dien II of Lindenhurst; six great-grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Johnna-Marie Stried Van Dien, daughter of Johnette, and baby Madisyn Jeanette Van Dien, daughter of John and Kathleen; three other surviving great-grandchildren given to him by the marriage of John and Kathleen, Patricia Jane, Andrew Colin, and Ryan Wells Elliott; god-children, Jill (Harry) McKenzie of Waukegan and Laura Lee (Joseph) Herrington of Anniston, Alabama; he was affectionately known as "Grandpa GG" (God-father grandfather) to her three children, Mark Richard Herrington of Anniston, Alabama, Rev. Jody Lee Herrington of Brownsville Assembly of God Church in Pensacola, Florida, and Christopher Herrington and his daughter, Victoria of Baxley, Georgia; brothers, Charles (Cassey) Stried of Pensacola, Florida and his "kid brother" Jack Stried of Beach Park; one sister, Pearl Miller of Zion; and dozens of nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Clifford (Maryanne) Swanson of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, came to visit often as did Judy (Edward) Fojtik of Ingleside and Charles (Brenda) Fagan of Fox Lake who were present to comfort their aunt Jeanette at "Swede's" passing.
"Swede" was preceded in death by his parents, Beulah and Clarence Stried; his brothers, Vernon, Roy, and Clarence "Punch" Stried; his adored sister, Beulah Stried Swanson; and his great-grandson, Matthew Adams Elliott.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 10, 2004 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with interment following at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion. Bernadine Szempruch
Bernadine Szempruch, age 62, of Gurnee, formerly of Chicago, died Wednesday, October 7, 2004 in Gurnee. She was born September 20, 1942 in Chicago.
She was a member of St. Patrick Church in Wadsworth. She was employed by Harris Bank for 20 years and was Assistant Vice President and Assistant Branch Manager.
She is survived by her husband, Laurence Szempruch; a daughter, Laura Otter; son-in-law, Larry Otter; a son, Brian Szempruch and intended, Sharon King; sisters, Geraldine Marra and Mary Lou Gonshi; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lillian; and a brother, Joseph.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday October 9, 2004 at St. Patrick's Church, 15000 W. Wadsworth Rd., Wadsworth. Burial at Ascension cemetery in Libertyville.

Mary A. Blue
Mary A. Blue, 76, of Waukegan, passed away Thursday, October 3, 2002 at Pebblebrook Nursing Home in Lake Bluff. She was born April 18, 1926 in East St. Louis, IL. She was a member of Our Lady of Humility Church in Beach Park and the Women of the Moose. Mary retired from Oakland Grade School in Antioch after 29 years of service as a secretary.
Survivors include 2 daughters Jeanne Wisler of Fitchburg, Mass., and Mary Hoelters of Salem, Wisc.; 3 sons Charles Blue of Clifton Park, NY, Robert Blue and John Blue of Waukegan, Ill.; 2 grandchildren Laura and Paul Wisler; 1 sister Maxine Poell of Belleville, Ill.; 3 brothers Raymond Maxwell of Belleville, Ill., Carl Maxwell of Troy, Ill and Alfred Maxwell of O'Fallen, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at Our Lady of Humility Church, 10655 W. Wadsworth, Beach Park, IL. Burial will be in Ascension cemetery in Libertyville. Crystal Lyons Plummer
Crystal Lyons Plummer, 86, of Ingleside, passed away Friday, October 4, 2002 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Born December 24, 1915 in Richland Center, Wisconsin the daughter of the late Joseph Carl Lyons and Roberta Gore.
A graduate of Waukegan High School. Member of Delta Kappa Gama and graduate of Lake Forest College. Crystal served as a teacher and principal for 21 years at the Gavin School in Ingleside. A Sunday school teacher and lifelong member of the United Protestant Church in Grayslake. Among her interests were artistic design, pottery and pottery wheel work, needle-point work and tapestries.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, N. Kenneth Plummer, whom she married
on June 17, 1934; her children, Christine Taulbee of Ingleside and Norman Plummer, Jr. of Arlington Heights; her grandchildren, Willard Taulbee of Kentucky, Crystal Dean of Kentucky, Grethel Jones of Kentucky and eight great-grandchildren.
Crystal was preceded in death by her parents and brother.
Funeral services will be held at 1PM on Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at STRANG FUNERAL CHAPEL &CREMATORIUM;, LTD, 410 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake, Illinois 60030 with Pastor William Owen officiating. Interment will follow at Warren cemetery in Gurnee. Friends of the family may visit at the funeral chapel prior to the services on Wednesday from 10AM until 1PM.

Martha L. "Tooty" Seppala
Martha L. "Tooty" Seppala, 69, of Zion, IL passed away Thursday, October 3, 2002 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
She was born March 24, 1933 in Waukegan, IL, was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church of Waukegan and was retired.
Survivors include two sons, Gene (Joy) Seppala and William (Becky) Seppala; a daughter, Lynn Ruiz; seven grandchildren, Debra Seppala, Daniel Seppala, John Seppala, Amanda Ruiz, Danielle Ruiz, Sean Sullivan and Breanna La Due; and three great grandchildren, Anthony Seppala, Alyssa and Destinee Jones.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Seppala; her mother and father, Martha and Lloyd Beck; and a brother, Ralph Beck.
Memorial Services will be held at 3 PM Monday, October 7, 2002 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2720 McAree Rd, Waukegan, IL with Pastor Schumate officiating. Burial will be in Brookston, Minnesota.

Bonnie Dee Winfrey
Bonnie Dee Winfrey, 45, of Waukegan, Illinois, went to her eternal rest on October 4, 2002.
Bonnie attended Waukegan High School and worked several jobs including Baxter Healthcare all while taking care of her father, Mr. James S. Winfrey (deceased) and mother, Mrs. Marie Winfrey of Waukegan.
Bonnie grew up with her twin sister Connie Lee Winfrey and big brother, Albert S. Winfrey, both of Waukegan, Illinois.
Bonnie also leaves to cherish her memory, her mother, Mrs. Marie Winfrey; five sisters, Helen Funderburg and Miriam Quinn-Payne of Zion, Illinois, Penny (Tony) Brace and Pamela J. Quinn of San Diego, CA and Amy Quinn-McCullough of Milwaukee, WI; five brothers, Anthony (Patricia) Quinn and Lawrence "Larry" Quinn of Waukegan, Illinois, Phillip Jackson of Bayport, Minnesota, Donald (Candice) Quinn of Wadsworth, Illinois and Gary (Lorraine) Quinn of Huntsville, Alabama.
Bonnie had many nieces and nephews, each one was very special and unique to her. She also had a God-child, Kawanaia Holmes of Toledo, Ohio.
Bonnie is further survived by family and friends that were dear to her: Uncle Chimes Winfrey, Aunts: Eloise Turner and Alyet Sisson (IL), Emmaline Thomas (GA), Edna Schroeder (WI); Cousins: Marie Louise McNulty, Dean and Mel Dorsey, Ronnie Phillips (IL); Nieces: Sabrina (Ambrose) King, Kayla Blanchard and Tessy Quinn (IL); Nephews: Gary "Gar-Gar" Quinn (IL) and Corey Winfrey (AR); Friends: Diane Steele-Holmes (OH), Yvonne Dennis (AR), Mike Kuykendall, Velma Quinn, Willis Payne, Morris and Claudia Jarrett, Ray Johnson, Erving Murray and Shrone Oglesby (all of IL).
Bonnie was preceded in death by her father and Beulah Quinn.
