Nellie Hudspeth
Nellie Hudspeth, 76, of Zion, IL, died on Monday, October 4, 2004 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Waukegan, IL. Nellie was born August 16, 1928 in Vincennes, IN, to the late Sylvester and Pearl Carie.
Nellie came to Zion 52 years age, and was employed at Ammco Tools in North Chicago for 18 years. Nellie was a loving wife, mother, and friend, who will be dearly missed by all.
Survivors include her husband, Marvin; three children, Steven (Cara) Hudspeth of Everett, WA, Ronald Hudspeth of Lake Villa, IL, and Becky (George) Osorio of Zion; five grandchildren, Stacey, Tina, Dana and Bradley Hudspeth, and Kris Burt; and a sister, Juanita Wilbur of Vincennes, IN.
Nellie was preceded in death by two sisters, Francis Holmes and Mary Alice Griesmer; and three brothers, Leo, Roy, and Ray Carie.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 8, 2004 at 11:00 AM at CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion, with Pastor Jerry Harris of Church of the Nazarene of Waukegan, officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 7, 2004 from 5:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Donna L. Maciukevicius
Donna Loretta Maciukevicius, 42, of Dayton, OH and formerly of Waukegan, passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2004 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH.
Donna was born March 27, 1962 in Waukegan and attended Waukegan Schools. She was a graduate of the University of Illinois in Champaign, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. Donna was employed by the NCR Corporation in Dayton for 20 years as an IT Project Manager.She loved all sports, playing volleyball and softball for Waukegan Township High School and was a former member of St. Bartholomew Church and the church choir; she was an avid golfer, and belonged to the NCR Country Club, where she was a ladies club champion. Donna also held executive positions with the Bellbrook, OH sugar Maple Festival and was a member of the Lithuanian American Community, Inc.
Donna is survived by her loving father and mother, Anatolijus and Irena Maciukevicius; her dear, dear friend and companion, Denise Shew and her daughters, Sara and Stacey Shew; brother, Vitas (Sonia) Maciukevicius; godfather, Aleksas (Liolyda) Sukys; godmother, Rebecca Stanulis; and many uncles aunts both here and in Lithuania.
She is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Aleksas and Ona Sukys, her paternal grandparents, Juozas and Anele Maciukevicius, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 12 Noon Saturday, October 9, 2004 at the Peterson & Patch Funeral Home 408 N. Sheridan Rd. Waukegan. Interment will be at Ascension cemetery in Libertyville. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:30 am until the time of service on Saturday.

Frederick G. Modde
Frederick G. Modde, 89, of Hampshire died Sunday, October 3, 2004 at Provena St. Therese Hospital in Waukegan. He was born August 15, 1915 in St. Charles, the son of Gustav and Emilie Anna Modde. Fred was a 1932 graduate of St. Charles High School.
He married
Gladys Munch in June of 1938 in St. Charles and they were longtime residents of Hampshire. Mr Modde was a punch press operator for McGraw-Edison of Elgin for over 25 years and at Cornell Forge in Hampshire for over 10 years.
He was elected Hampshire Township Supervisor in 1968, a position he proudly served for 20 years. He was a World War II Marine Corp veteran and a member of the American Legion Post #680 of Hampshire. He had also been a Boy Scout Leader, after becoming one of the first Eagle Scouts in the St. Charles area. Fred was a "hail fellow, well met" and a proud and stubborn Belgian.
Surviving are six children, Michael (Deborah) Modde of Gurnee, Guy (Beth) Modde of Elgin, George Modde of Hampshire, Marsha (Danny) McMichael of West Hartford, CT, Philip Modde of Elgin, and Douglas Modde of Fayetteville, NC; nine grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys on September 16, 1969; granddaughter, Carrie McMichael; and three sisters, Rachel Geldmeyer, Delphine Mayotte, and Leona Polly.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at the FREDRICK FUNERAL HOME, 284 Park St., Hampshire. Burial will be in the Hampshire Center cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be directed to the Hampshire Lions Club or to the Hampshire American Legion.

Morris Shapiro "Mel"
Morris "Moe" Shapiro, 84, of Libertyville, IL, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2004 at the VA Medical Center in North Chicago. He was born February 1, 1920 in Norwalk, CT, was a resident of Fairfield, CT for most of his life, moving to Libertyville in 1999. He was a US Army Veteran, having served in the European Theatre during WW II and later enjoyed the many years that he spent as a wholesale florist.
Moe never met a person he didn't like, was always surrounded by his many friends and his life was also enriched by the family pets. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends and was a member of the Mill River Country Club in CT and the Hillcrest Country Club in Long Grove, IL.
Surviving are his sons, Michael (Shelley) Shapiro of Fairfield, CT and Neil Shapiro of Libertyville; four Grandchildren, Jennifer (Tim), Joanna, Stephen and Elizabeth; two Great Grandchildren, Steven and Matthew; two Sisters, Betty and Lily Shapiro of Norwalk; a niece Judy (Harry) Andrew and nephews, David (Naomi) Pockell and Leslie (Noriko) Pockell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna Shapiro, by his wife Carolyn in 1994, by a brother Leonard and sisters, Ruth & Mildred.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday October 8 at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Ave., (Rt. 176) Libertyville. Services will also be held in Connecticut. For those who wish to make a contribution, can do so to the charity of your choice in his memory.
Ernest W. Haataja
Ernest W. Haataja, 84, of Waukegan, passed away October 4, 2003 at St. Therese Medical Center. He was born August 25, 1919 in Copper City, MI. He served in World War II in the Army Air Force. He loved fishing and wood crafts.
Survived by his wife of 35 years, Una Haataja, one son, Michael Haataja of Winthrop Harbor.

Dr. William I. Metzger
Dr. William I. Metzger, 87, of Libertyville, IL passed away Thursday, October 2, 2003 at the Lake Forest Hospital. He was born October 29, 1915 in Peekskill, New York, received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Science from Purdue University and a doctorate degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 1946. Dr. Metzger retired from Cook County Hospital in 1982, where he was the Director of Clinical Microbiology since 1954.
He was a long time member of the American and Illinois Society for Microbiology; Fellow of the American Public Health Association, past member of Sigma Xi, the New York Academy of Science and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was certified by the American Board of Medical Microbiology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. He was also an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology for several years, and a member of St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville.
Dr. Metzger was the author of 50 scientific papers on original research published in the National Laboratory and Medical Journals. Those studies related to clinical procedures with infectious diseases, including their treatment with chemotherapeutic agents. He participated in the development of the first Tetracycline Antibiotic, Aureomycin, prior to coming to Illinois. While at Cook County Hospital, he was instrumental in the development of a Pneumococcol vaccine.
Surviving are his beloved wife of many years, Trudy Metzger; a daughter, Annette (Tim) Hagerty; a son, Dr. Dennis (Colleen) Metzger; grandfather of Luke, Quincy, Lindsey, Jacquline, Christina, Caroline, Natalie and Gregory; and great grandfather of Jacob; dear brother, Kenneth (Agnes) Metzger.
Prayers will begin at 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Ave (Rt. 176), Libertyville and services will continue to St. Joseph Church for Funeral Mass at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Ascension cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Monday at the funeral home.

Eevi (Hukkala) Palo
Eevi Palo, 83, of Columbia, MO and formerly of Waukegan, died September 29, 2003 at The Arbors, Bluff Creek, Columbia, MO.
Eevi was born August 26, 1920 in Alavus, Finland, to Edward and Maria Hukkala. The family emigrated to the United States when Eevi was approximately 6 years old.
Eevi was an employee of the Department of Public Aid in Waukegan, retiring from there after approximately 15 years of service. She was a life-long member of the Waukegan Historical Society She was married
to Edwin Palo in Waukegan on September 28, 1940. Eevi was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church and had been a member of the Women's Guild of the church.
Along with her husband, she was a member of the Waukegan Finnish Choir, and also appeared in Finnish plays at the Finnish Temperance Hall. They were also involved in a local Square Dance Club, as well as being members of the Swedish Glee Club.
In 1973, following a tragic automobile accident in which her husband was killed, Eevi moved to Columbia, MO to be near her son Nicholas. While in Columbia, she was a member of the Sunshine Senior Bowling League and the Bohemia Ragtime Society. She loved to travel, and with her friend Inez Schmidt, visited the European countries of Finland, Austria, Germany and Italy, plus Hawaii, and including trips within the United States.
Surviving are her sons Nicholas Palo and Timothy (Linda) Palo, grandson Christopher Edwin, great-granddaughter Kim, step-grandchildren Cody and Adrianne, plus numerous cousins in the United States and Finland. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Edwin.
Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the Chapel at North Shore Garden of Memories, 18th St. and Green Bay Road, North Chicago, IL, with Pastor Jeffrey Koth officiating. Interment will follow the services.

Gene Ray Burdette
Gene Ray Burdette, a Round Lake Beach resident, passed away Saturday, October 2, 2004 at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston at the age of 58.
Gene was born April 30, 1946 to Woodrow and Jeanetta (nee Hiseman) Burdette in Dayton, OH. Gene was employed for more than 10 years at Precision Chrome in Fox Lake.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Brenda (nee Feltner) Burdette, whom he wed on June 3, 1966 in Waukegan; his children, Jeanie (Bill) Havert of Lindenhurst, Vicki Villegas of Round Lake and Joe Burdette of Round Lake; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kelley, Amanda, Lisa, Morgan, Alex and Cassic; and his sisters, Jenny (Jim) Bennett of Blue Creek, OH and Loretta (Ron) Omer of Dayton, OH.
Gene's parents preceded him in death.
Friends of the family may visit on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 from 4 to 8 p.m. at STRANG FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATORIUM, 410 E. BELVIDERE ROAD, GRAYSLAKE, IL 60030. Larry Enis
Larry Enis, 44, of Marengo, IL, formerly of Waukegan, IL, passed away Tuesday, September 28, 2004. He was born February 18, 1960 in Milwaukee, WI.
He is survived by his wife, Sherrie; two sons, Larry Enis and Alexander Enis; three daughters, Erika (Charles) Collins, Katrina Enis and Sabrina Enis; a granddaughter, Zeniah Collins; his father, Forrest Enis; two brothers, Anthony (Diane) Enis and Greg Bowie; five sisters, Gwendolyn (Murrell) Porsche, Janis Enis, Debra (Alex) Mackiel, Joyce Rock and Janis Rock; a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and friends.
preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Enis; his mother, Sarah Enis; and his grandparents.

Patrick J. Matthews
Patrick J. Matthews, 80, formerly of Libertyville and a 1943 graduate of Libertyville High School died September 24, 2004 in Walnut Creek, CA.
He was a land supervisor with P.G.&E.; Land Management for 40 years, reitiring in October 1986. Patrick served in the U.S. Navy during W.W.II. He was a parishoner of St. Mary Church in Walnut Creek, and a member of the Alameda Elks Club as well as Pacific Service Employees Association. Patrick was also an avid golfer.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty J. Matthews of Walnut Creek; a son, Dennis J. Matthews of Los Gatos; a daughter, Linda J. Sullivan of Los Gatos; his mother-in-law, Bertha Liebers of Walnut Creek; sisters, Kathleen Mynor of IL and Eileen Larson of IL; a brother, Robert Matthews of IL; grandchildren; Meaghan, Patrick, Kate, Shaun, and Kyle; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Adams.
A Vigil was held at Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel, 1139 Saranap Ave., Walnut Creek on September 28, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church, 2039 Mt. Diablo Blvd., Walnut Creek on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 commencing at 10:00 a.m. Interment followed at Queen of Heaven cemetery, Lafayette.
