Betty J. Hyde
Elizabeth J. Hyde, known by her friends as Betty, died on Thursday, October 30, 2003 at the Pavilion of Waukegan Nursing Home after a series of strokes. Betty is survived by four sisters, Alice Nance, Gertrude Paul, Isabel Gavagan and Jeanette Long; her three sons, Charles R. Hyde of Garland, Texas, Thomas C. Hyde of Phoeniz, AZ, and David A. Hyde of Katy, Texas; four grandsons; two granddaughters; and one great grandson.
Born as the last of six children to Louise and Clinton Spoor, Betty grew up in the house immediately behind the old Academy Theater. She and her siblings had free admittance to the theater because of their Uncle George's benevolent influence. Betty excelled in her studies and graduated valedictorian in 1942 from Waukegan High School. During her high school years she met Raymond C. Hyde whom she married
in May 1944. She worked for many years as an employee of the Waukegan School District serving as a secretary at Lyon Elementary and later at Thomas Jefferson Jr. High.
Betty instilled in her children the importance of an education and the importance of building a strong spiritual faith. As a member of the First Congregational Church of Waukegan Betty sang in the choir, and gave generously of her time and talents. Betty also demonstrated her stewardship to family and community with several years of volunteer work at Victory Memorial Hospital, being a den mother when her sons were in Cub Scouts, volunteering in the Waukegan Grade School Band Parents Association and providing leadership in the American Field Service. It was through the APS that Betty and her husband hosted a high school exchanged student from New Zealand, Peter Lindsay, even after their sons had graduated high school.
Betty did not remain idle as her life turned to retirement. She was able to turn to some of her favorite pastimes and hobbies. You could not have asked for a better seamstress or a more passionate maker of needlepoint, cross stitch, knitting, quility, crocheting and every other conceivable manner of craft. Her children, grandchildren and friends are the recipients of many heirloom quality works.
Betty will be missed by all she touched in her life. "Ever since I spent a week-end with Betty's family as an exchange student from Switzerland to Lake Forest some 35 years ago, I kept in close contact with her. I came back with friends, with my wife and finally with my own kids and always found Betty with her typical cheerful broad smile on her face. And this even in times when life had played a rough game on her. We kept in touch with each other through good and bad times. We last visited her when she had broken her ankle and was bound to her apartment. She used this misfortune at her considerable age to learn to deal with her computer and the internet which I found remarkable!" This account is from Dr. Urs Gerhard of Basil, Switzerland, a close friend.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 9, 2:00 p.m., at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, located at 320 Grand Ave., Waukegan. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the memorial service.
