Allen E. Klinesmith, 51,of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, passed away August 14, 2001.
He was born December 3, 1949 in Waukegan and graduated from Warren Township H.S., Class of 1969. He was a Vietnam Veteran who served in the 196th Light Infantry Brigade from 1970 to 1971.
Allen worked at the North Chicago V.A. Hospital for more than 20 years. He was also a member of the Gurnee American Legion, Post #771 and was an avid hunter and golfer.
Allen is survived by his wife Nancy; his daughter Tammy, 2 step-daughters; Michelle (Mike) Miller and Lisa (Bill) Fairbanks, 6 loving grandchildren: Ashley, Austin, Alana, Matthew, Melissa and Jacob; his parents Lorraine and Ray Klinesmith, brothers Ray Jr. (Joanie), Tom (Sharon), Danny (Jeannie) and Jerry Klinesmith, a sister Debbie Golien, and his nieces and nephews: Kelly, Mike, Kevin, Jordan, Donny, Danny, Raymond, and Martin.
Visitation will be from 10:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 18, 2001. Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the GURNEE-SALATA FUNERAL HOME, 4190 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee. Mildred I. Mellen
Mildred I. Mellen, 95, of Rancho Santa Fe, California, formerly of Waukegan, Illinois, passed away August 13, 2001 at her home.
She was born July 30, 1906 in Mount Morris, Illinois and was a Waukegan resident from 1938 until 1975 before moving to California.
She was very active in volunteer work. She was a "grey lady" working with patients at Downey Hospital. She also volunteered at Barwell Settlement helping the under privileged and at Jackson School in Waukegan working with handicapped children. Once in California, she volunteered at Country Friends Store in Rancho Santa Fe which was a charitable store to help those in need. She loved animals and golf and was a member of the Lake County Art League. She also loved gardening and was a member of the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, in 1985. She is survived by her son Richard of Lake Forest.
Services will be private. If desired, memorials may be made in her memory to the Helen Woodward Animal Center, P.O. Box 64, Rancho Santa Fe, CA. 92067.
Violet L. Smith
Violet L. Smith, 97, of McHenry, Illinois, died August 16, 2001 at Alden Terrace Nursing Home. She was born May 22, 1904 in Waukegan, IL. She was retired from Neiser's Dime Store in Waukegan and later worked at Kelly Hardware on Glen Flora in Waukegan.
She is survived by her daughters Marceil Miller of Mundelein and Bernice Nickens of Waukegan, 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, 3 sisters Dorothy Russell of Tennessee, Rose Sacramento of Gurnee and Fern (Irvin) Quinn of Park City. She was preceded in death by her husband Vere Smith.
Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Saturday at KRISTAN FUNERAL HOME, 219 W. Maple (Rt. 176) Mundelein. Funeral Service is at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Ivanhoe cemetery. Info: (847) 566-8020.
Jack Tinker
Jack Tinker, 75, of Beach Park, Illinois passed away on August 14, 2001 at Victory Memorial Hospital. He was born in Kenosha, WI. Jack spend his childhood there and moved to Waukegan in 1951 to start his own business.
On September 6, 1947 he married
the love of his life Mildred (Millie) Ernst.
Jack went to work at the age of 10. As a young adult he was manager of Master Sprayers, an agricultural aerial spraying business. For 45 yeas he was self-employed in the Waukegan/North Chicago area as the owner of My Brothers Auto Mart and Economy Motors.
His greatest joy in life was going horseback riding with his family and taking vacations with them. He will always be remembered for his tremendous sense of humor, for the kindness and charity he showed to others.
Besides being a devoted loving husband to Millie, he was also a dedicated father to John (Barbara) Tinker and Jane (Randy) Ochoa. He was a wonderful grandfather (PawPaw) to Jaclyn Ochoa, Patrick Tinker, Stephen Ochoa and Sean Tinker. He is also survived by a step grandson, Chris Mandurano, 3 sisters, Mary Jane Steele, Katherine Bartlett and Helen Mae Conroy along with several nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents,Theresa and Todd Tinker, 3 brothers: Jimmy, Harold and Joe and w sisters, Loretta Moore and Juanita Tinker.
Jack, Dad, PawPaw, Happy trails to you (until we meet again). We love you so much.

Marian Lossman Atterbery
Marian Atterbery (nee Lossman), 86, died at Victory Lakes Continuing Care Center on August 13, 2001. She was born and lived most of her active, giving life in Waukegan.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Waukegan, where she married
Peyton Atterbery of the pioneer Atterbery Drug Store family on January 14 1989. They then began a happy married
life in Lake Forest.
Marian's career as a legal secretary began upon her graduation from high school in 1931 (age 17), when she began working for attorney Clarence Diver. She worked with the law firm of Snyder, Clarke and Dalziel for many years. She also spent a period of time on Civil Service, legal department, at 5th Army Headquarters in Chicago. Upon her retirement in 1988, she was secretary to Julian Johnson, attorney.
Marian served faithfully with many local civic organizations. She was recording secretary and board member to Lake County Community Concert Assoc., Secretary, Waukegan Historical Society, the Historic Millburn Community Assoc, Inc., Secretary for Friends of the Library, NTHS Lunch Bunch, 1931 Class Reunion Group, former member of Junior Business Woman's Club of YWCA and a volunteer of GSO at Belvidere USO.
She is survived by her husband Peyton Atterbery of Lake Forest, a sister Eleanor (Robert) Brooks of Zion, and a niece Dr. Bonnie S. Brooks Whalen of El Paso, TX., a grand nephew Ross A. Brooks, son of niece Jill (the late Robert R.) S. Brooks of Millburn.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, August 18, 2001 at MARSH FUNERAL HOME OF GURNEE, 305 cemetery Rd., with Gehl DeVore officiating. Burial will be in Warren cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday and from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Historic Millburn Community Assoc. Tyrus Jackson. She worked at Deaconess Hospital in the Sterilizing Department. She was a member of Post 7816 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and several organizations. Her two sisters, Her one son, one daughter-in-law and two grandsons, grandmother and father all preceded her in death."

Mary Klapak
Mary Klapak (nee Sabath), 78, of Waukegan, Illinois died Monday, August 13, 2001 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Waukegan. She was born September 17, 1922 on board ship bound for the United States from Poland.
Mary worked at Fansteel Metallurgical and lived her happy life as a faithful wife, mother, and homemaker. She enjoyed bowling, gardening and family vacations. She was a faithful member of St. Dismas Catholic Church in Waukegan.
Mary is survived by her three children: Dianne Marie Anderson of Houston, TX., Mary Ann (Gerald) McKinney of Elgin, IL., and George (Shirley) Klapak of Salem, WI., 8 loving grandchildren: Carol Del0santos, Jerome "Nicky" and Darryl Anderson, Suzett McCullum, Barbi Harrison, Michelle McKinney, and Steven and Sarah Klapak, 4 great-grandchildren: Yvette Walters, Tim McKinney, Mikey Suerth and Christopher McCullum, 1 sister, Dolly (Willis) Curtis of Mystic, CT. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, George Klapak on July 30, 1988, a dear grandson, John Paul McKinney and her parents, Nicholas and Antoinette (nee Niemietz).

Ryan N. Kurgan
Ryan N. Kurgan, 20, a former resident of Lake Bluff, Illinois, passed away suddenly Monday, August 13, 2001 from injuries received in an automobile accident in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was born February 7, 1981 in Hoffman Estates and was a 1999 graduate of Lake Forest High School. Ryan participated on the high school cross country track team and was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville.
Surviving are his mother, Stella (Charles) George of Lake Bluff and his father William Kurgan of Phoenix, AZ.; 3 brothers, Peter (Patricia) Pena, Jr., and Daniel (Janey) Pena, both of Schaumburg and Michael George of Lake Bluff; his sister, Lisa Marie George of Garrettsville, Ohio; his grandparents, Jesus and Elida Palacios of McAllen, TX., and Mavis Mattioda of Streamwood, IL.; Godparents Ken and Shirley Kurgan of Schaumburg, his niece Kourtney Pena and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
Prayers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2001 at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Avenue (Rte. 176) Libertyville and services will continue to St. Joseph Church for funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Lakeside cemetery in Libertyville. Emil J. Sedik, Sr.
Emil J. Sedik, Sr., age 91, of Highwood passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at Highland Park Hospital. Born April 25, 1910 in Chicago Heights, Illinois and has been a resident of Highland Park and Highwood sine 1958.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a Staff Sargent in W..II and had worked on the Manhattan Project. He worked for the Civil Service at Fort Sheridan until his retirement. His favorite past-time was the Ham Radio, his call letters were W9NRN.
Survivors include four sons, E. Joseph (Stephanie) Sedik, Jr. of Highwood, Terrance Sedik of San Francisco, CA, Robert Sedik of Gurnee, Michael (Kathleen) Sedik of Portland, OR; one daughter, Shirley (Ray) Scanlon of Munster, IN; fourteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; one brother, Jerry Sedik of Rockford; one sister, Sally Diegnau of Bensonville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence on March 23, 1974; two sister, Ruthann and Irene; and one brother, Joseph.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, August 18, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at St. James Church, 134 North Avenue, Highwood. Private interment will be in Ascension cemetery, Libertyville.

Ilma Van Treeck
Ilma Van Treeck, age 92, of Homosassa, Florida, formerly of Waukegan, Illinois passed away August 11, 2001. She was born January 1, 1909 in Ironwood, Michigan. She spent most of her life in Waukegan until retiring to Florida. She was a former member of the Swedish Glee Club, the Moose Club in Crystal River, FL., and had retired from Abbott Labs.
Survivors include her 2 daughters, Dolores Abrams and June Mackey-Handler, 5 grandchildren: Van (Pam) Mathews, Dawn Mathews, Kathy (Bill) Dedek, Cindy (Marvin) Yates, Sheryl Mackey and husband Brian Hobbs, and 6 great grandchildren: Van, Adrienne, Amber Mathews, Haley Orr and Krystin Yates, great grandchild Christopher McCray and dear friend Fred Baker. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, William Van Treeck, her parents Mary and Michael Makinen, and 2 sisters Fannie Ball and Olive Rajtora.

Donald F. Doss, Sr., 67, of Milwaukee, WI, formerly of Waukegan, IL for many years, died on Thursday, August 14, 2003 at St. Michael's Hospital, Milwaukee, WI.

Irma Jean Handy
Irma Jean Handy was a loyal family member and friend. She was especially compassionate when taking care of the babies and little ones. Whenever someone in the family needed a caregiver, Irma Jean would always be there to lend a helping hand and volunteer her services.
Irma Jean was an extremely good and efficient cook. She exhibited these characteristics at Fat Charlie's Restaurant on 10th Street in North Chicago, Illinois and at the Handy-Spears Pre-Reunion fundraiser dinner in 1995.
Irma Jean Handy was born on May 27, 1937 in Luxora, Arkansas. She was the second born of fourteen children born to Ben and Bertha Handy. Irma Jean successfully attended Lincoln-McAllister school (now Carmen-Buckner Elementary) and Waukegan High School, graduating in the class of 1957. She was employed at Downey-Veteran's Administration Hospital for 31 years upon her retirement in 1995.

Howard Chandler Harlan, Jr.
Howard Chandler Harlan, Jr., 75, a lifelong resident of Mundelein who was born February 22, 1928 in Hopewell, Virginia, died Sunday, August 10th in Biloxi, Mississippi. Howard was a World War II Navy Veteran who served on the USS Vesole in the Pacific. He was the owner of Midwest Furnace Company in Waukegan until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the Lake County Contractors Association and the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 73 with over 50 years of service. He also was a long standing member of the Shriners, American Legion, V.F.W. and the Elks. Also being one of the founding members of the Diamond Lake Water Ski Club. Howard was known to all as a man who celebrated life and loved people.
Howard is survived by Margaret Harlan, his loving wife Gloria Harlan, dear sons Howard (Trish) Harlan, Randall Fisher, Michael (Claudia) Fisher, dear daughters Patricia (Richard) Parks, Vikki (Wayne) McElhose, Laura (Rick) Stoker, Angela Fisher, dear siblings Burtis (Jane) Harlan, Ruth Ann (Max Ward) Markle, Donald (Carole) Austin, Peggy (John) Gilles, fond grandchildren Julie Harlan, Shawn (Lynn) Harlan, Michael Sommer, Ethan and Harrison Fisher, Wyatt Stoker, Shannon McElhose, Ethan and Aiden Brandt, Hailee Parks, cherished great grandchildren Morgan Laurel Harlan and Nathan Chandler Harlan. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Laurel, dear sons Michael and James Fisher.
