Lorraine M. Larsen
Lorraine M. Larsen passed peacefully after an extended illness with her family surrounding her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard (Dick) in 1986. Lorraine and Dick met through the gentle urging of his good friend and golf partner,her brother, Carl Mathes. They became high school sweethearts and married at Christ Episcopal Church on September 10, 1939. For 46 years they enjoyed an active social life supported by their strong circle of friends from the mills and bowling alleys of Lake County, who joined them on their many travels, golf outings and regular card games and dinner.
Mrs. Larsen is survived by her children, Penny (John) Petitclair of Gurnee, David (Dian) Larsen of Escondido, CA and Richard (Judi) Larsen of Waukegan; her grandchildren, are Deborah (Ron) Koth, Ann (Kevin) Grebner, Kristin Larsen, Eric Larsen and Brian Larsen. She will be sorely missed by her great-grandchildren Ron and Kyle Koth.
Lorraine exemplified the meaning of mother, friend, neighbor, consummate volunteer and active citizen of Waukegan. She contributed countless hours to the pursuit of her children's education, sports interests, and appreciation of the arts. The community will be forever grateful for her tireless efforts to her many causes, including: The C.O.O.L. Food Pantry, as a founder and volunteer; as a Director for the Waukegan Historical Society, where she spear headed efforts to computerize and professionally catalogue the collections and archives and also as a chairwoman for the Annual Tour of Historic Homes; as a Grade School Band Parent, and as a volunteer to Friends of the Waukegan Library.
Mrs. Larsen was a charter member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where she cheerfully served on many committees, boards and outreach activities, including the PADS program. Her professional career included secretarial work for local businesses plus a 15 year career with Abbott Laboratories where she served as Executive Secretary in the Abbott International Division.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at Peterson & Patch Funeral Home, 408 N. Sheridan Rd. Her funeral service will be conducted at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 824 N. Lewis Ave., Waukegan on Wednesday at 10 AM. There will be a visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Her interment will follow at the North Shore garden of Memories. Lorraine's family will appreciate that any memorial contributions be mad to the C.O.O.L. Food Pantry at 127 W. Water St., Waukegan.

Helen S. Brink
Helen S. Brink, 85, of Waukegan, IL passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at the Pavilion of Waukegan. She was born March 23, 1918 in Crosby, MN. Helen was retired from the Lake County Courthouse, Voters Registration Division after 12 years of service.
She is survived by her son Lawrence Brink of Gurnee and twins, Barbara (Robert) May of Arkdale, WI and Bruce (Mary) Brink of Arizona, nine grandchildren, Laurie (Greg) Crowley, Vicki (Carl) Johann, Robert (Nelida) Brink, Natalie (Jeff) Mihovilovich, Kathy (John) Cleven, Michelle (Bo) Roberts, Greg (Kellie) May, Tracy (Vince) Lomeo and John (Amber) Brink and 18 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Brink in 1971 and by four sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2003 with Rev. William L. Genda officiating at the SALATA GURNEE FUNERAL HOME, 4190 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee with interment to follow at Warren cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Saturday.

Jose Carrera
Jose Carrera, 45, of Waukegan, passed away March 22, 2003 in Phoenix, AZ. He was born May 25, 1957 in Mexico and was a member of Holy Family Parish.
Survivors include his wife Blanca; his three daughters Evelyn, Jennifer and Anel; his mother Bernarda; his brothers and sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at Holy Family Parish, 450 Keller Ave., Waukegan with Father Gary Graf officiating. Burial will be at Ascension cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2003 and from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Arrangements entrusted to MARSH FUNERAL HOME (847) 336-0127.

Natalie M. deVries
Natalie M. deVries, 91, passed away Friday, April 4, 2003 at Pebblebrook Nursing Home in Lake Bluff, IL. Formerly of Round Lake Park for over 60 years, she relocated to Grayslake where she lived for over 15 years. Natalie was a member of Lake Region Bible Church where she loved to teach Sunday School. She was active in Women's Bible studies and a prayer warrior. Natalie also worked for Gefco Manufacturing for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Henry) Olson of Grayslake; eight grandsons; a granddaughter; 12 great grandchildren, Clarence Williams, her "ninth grandson"; and a son-in-law, William Hamm of Indiana.
Natalie was preceded in death by her husband, Walter deVries in 1961; her daughter, Ruth Hamm in 1996; her sister, Dorothy Huston in 2000; and her brother, Edward Fenska in 2001.
A funeral service will be held at 4 PM on Monday, April 7, 2003 at STRANG FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM, LTD, 410 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL, 60030 with Clarence Williams of Lake Region Bible Church officiating. Interment will be held privately at Highland Memorial Park in Libertyville, IL.

Peter Jeffrey "PJ" Ferree, III
Peter Jeffrey "PJ" Ferree, III, was born January 6, 2003 and became an angel on earth to all he came in contact with. The son of Tiffany Lynn (Scott) Ferree, US Navy, Oak Harbor, WA and Lance Corporal Peter J. Ferree, Jr. of the US Marine Corp currently deployed in the Mideast Conflict.
His birth at the Madigan Medical Center at Fort Lewis, WA left a void for all of his family so far away but fulfilled the lives of his parents.
In addition to his parents, his loss is shared by his maternal grandparents, Cindy and Ron Scott of Pleasant Prairie, WI; his aunt, Susie Scott; his great grandparents, Bonnie Jean Roth of Kenosha, WI, Thomas and Leola Scott of Zion, IL and Bill and Lorraine Lowe of Lindenhurst, IL; his great grandmother, Lucille Kelly of Kenosha; his great aunt, Sue (Tim) Stoodt and Amy of Gurnee and uncle,Michael (Barbara) Lowe of West St. Paul, MN and Jennifer Lowe of Ingleside, IL; his great uncles, Michael Scott of Gurnee and Shannon and Tim Powell of Kenosha, WI; his paternal grandparents, Peter J. Ferree, SR and Julie (John) Ayres of Battle Creek, MI and several great aunts, uncles and cousins; his great grandmother, Barbara I. Ferree of Clearwater, FL; and great grandparents, James and Emmie Dillon of Marshall, MI.
He will be missed by his loving caregivers, Michael and May Cherry and their son, Theo of Oak Harbor, WA who have been so supportive of "PJ" before and after his birth and have traveled here to be with him through his passage home to heaven.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Monday, April 7, 2003 at STRANG FUNERAL HOME, 1055 Main St. (Rt. 83), Antioch, IL. Interment will be in Millburn cemetery, Millburn, IL. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 PM Sunday.

Elbert Lamont Garland
Elbert Lamont Garland of Waldorf, Maryland, formerly of North Chicago, Illinois passed away at the Southern Maryland Hospital Center, Clinton, Maryland on Tuesday, April 1, 2003.
Elbert was born February 12, 1936 in Tollette, Arkansas to Alton and Myrtle Garland White. He attended Waukegan Public Schools and graduated from Waukegan Township High School, Class of 53. He served in the U.S. Army, in the Special Services, Winged Victory/Red Diamond Chorus. After discharge from the Army, he later formed the "El Garland Combo". Elbert appreciated all types of music, was an avid sports fan and loved war and military history.
He united with the First Corinthians M.B. Church in 1968, under Rev. Peter Goudeaux Jr., Pastor and served on the Trustee Board. He was a former member of the Rufus Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 107 and Western Consistory No. 28. He was a Civilian Personnel Representative at the U S N Electronics Supply Office, the U S N Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois and the Shipp's Parts Control Center, Mechanicsburg, PA. He also worked at the Naval Ordinance Station, Indian Head, MD. He retired from the Pentagon Joint Chief of Staff Division with 42 years of civil service and many meritorious awards/commendations.
Mr. Garland is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Viola Glover Garland; sons, Darryl and Devon Lamont Garland of Waldorf; five grandchildren, Gregory Lamont, Byran Darryl, Erika Janelle, Brittani Lynn all of Prince George County, MD, and Marissa Javonne of Washington, DC; sisters, Mildred Garland, Waukegan, Illinois, Marilyn (Terry) Smith of Kansas City, Kansas; brothers, Glen Roland and Raymond White of Waukegan; aunt Inez Walker of Kansas City, Kansas; great aunt Vercenia Tollette of Tollette, Arkansas; uncle John C. Garland, Kansas City, Kansas; goddaughter Hottraa Cystrunk; special nephew Minister Bobby Lester Garland; many cousins, nephews, friends and special friend Angelina Ball.
In addition to his parents, Elbert was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine McAlister, brothers, Bernard, Gerald and Adele White, known as Ronny Garland.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Corinthians M.B. Church, 1529 Elizabeth Ave., North Chicago, Illinois. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park cemetery, Zion, Illinois. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. until time of service at the church. James "Jim" W. Kern, Jr.
Jim Kern, 59, died Sunday, March 30, 2003 at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. He was born August 20, 1943 in Evanston, IL, and lived the majority of his life in the Midwest.
After six years of teaching, he continued his education at the University of Iowa in which he achieved an MBA in finance. Thereafter, he worked many years as an accountant for various companies. He resided in Salinas, CA after a move from Clinton, IA 14 years ago.
Mr. Kern enjoyed gardening, traveling and model railroading. He also spent time at the family business, Sandpiper Framing. He was a caring person who touched many hearts.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Kern of Salinas; two daughters, Katie Kern of San Francisco and Kendra Kern of Salinas; and his father, James Kern Sr. of Grayslake, IL.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 12 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Crossroads in Carmel.
Arrangements were made by the Struve and Laporte Chapel.

Eileen Ori
Eileen Ori, of Hollywood, Florida passed away Friday, March 28, 2003.
She was born August 31, 1935 in Chicago, IL.
Survived by her husband, Romano Ori; five children, Mona (Cy) Werda, Helen Ori, Carol Ori, Frank (Sheri) Ori and Theresa (Mike) Clendening; ten grandchildren, Cyranda, Tatum, Chadd, Melisa, Alicia, Ryan, Kelly, Bianca, Angelene, and Olivia.
preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Irene Lampert.
Memorial Services will be held at 11 AM Saturday, April 5, 2003 in the MARSH FUNERAL HOME, 1840 E. Grand Ave, Lindenhurst. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 AM Saturday in the funeral home. 847-336-0127.

Robert J. Steffens
Robert J. Steffens, 81, of Celebration, FL passed away Saturday, March 29, 2003 in Florida from complications of Emphysema. He was the son of the late Herman and Laura Steffens and was born in Claremore, Oklahoma where he was raised and attended high school. He graduated from the University of Illinois where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.
He served four years in the U.S. Navy and in 1947 was employed by U.S. Steel Corporation in Waukegan. When he retired 37 years later in Pittsburgh, he was the Managing Director of Manufactured Wire Products.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eleanor (Stratton) Steffens; a son, David of Pittsburgh, PA; a daughter, Laura (Raymond) Murray of Virginia Beach, VA; and their two sons, Raymond John and Robert.
He was preceded in death by a son, John in 1979.
Services will be held at The Holy Redeemer Church in Kissimmee, FL. Interment will bein East Fox Lake cemetery, Lake Villa, IL. Local arrangements by STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH. Info: 847-395-4000.

Harriet M. Van Hove
Harriet M. Van Hove, 84, of Waukegan passed away April 3, 2003 at Victory Lakes Continuing Care Center. She was born March 16, 1919 in Williamsburg, Iowa.
Her life passion was her family and friends, especially her children and grandchildren. She is survived by two children Sue (Michael) Grousd and Robert (Becky) Van Hove; five grandchildren Stacey (Tim) Mahoney, Nicole (Ed) Miller-Stevenson, Lauren Grousd, Michelle Van Hove, George Van Hove; three great-grandchildren Lily and Susie Mahoney and Nate Stevenson; one sister Darlene (Jim) Byers and a host of family and friends.
Her loving husband Leon Van Hove of 46 years of marriage precedes her in death.
Services will be private under the care of MARSH FUNERAL HOME, 305 cemetery Rd., Gurnee, IL 60085. (847) 336-0127.

Col. Phillip L. Vetrone, USA (Ret)
Colonel Phillip L. Vetrone, USA (Ret), 86, of Vernon Hills, formerly of North Chicago, died April 1, 2003 at Lake Forest Hospital.
Phil was born in New Haven, CT on August 27, 1916, the son of Luigi and Ida (Scarici) Vetrone. He graduated from the University of Maryland, entered the U.S. Army, was commissioned a 2nd LT and spent 33 months of World War II in the South Pacific area with the 43rd Infantry Division. Following the War, he served three years in the U. S. Army Recruiting Service in the Chicago land area. In 1945, he opened the Waukegan Recruiting Station, and then attended the Army Language School in California. From there he was assigned with the CIA until 1952 as an instructor and field operator. In July 1952, he was a Charter Member of the Special Forces as an instructor. Phil was selected in early 1953 to take a group of Green Berets to Korea, where he organized a guerilla regiment of over 1,000 Koreans. The U.S. Army team of 16 Green Berets all returned safely. The year of 1954 saw Phil attending the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS. Upon graduation, he was placed in command of the Special Forces School at Fort Bragg, NC.
In 1957, Phil was selected to attend the Italian War College and, upon graduation, was assigned to the Italian Army headquarters at Verona, Italy. Returning to the United States in 1960, his next assignment was at the Pentagon in charge of Special Warfare. Next was a tour in 1963 as Military Advisor to the Chinese Special Forces in Formosa, an assignment at Fort Knox, KY in 1964 and a 1967-1968 tour in Iran as Military Advisor to the First Imperial Iranian Army. The final stage of his military career was spent with the Fifth Army Inspector General's Office at Fort Sheridan where he retired as a Colonel in September, 1973.
Colonel Vetrone was awarded many decorations and service medals in his distinguished military career of 26 years, including the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, the Order of Chung Mu from the Korean Government, Army General Staff Badge and Master Parachutist Wings. Following his military service, Phil accepted a position as Business Development Officer for the newly formed New Century Bank in Mundelein, where he successfully built an impressive client base, resulting in a most successful banking career. He continued his community involvement with the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Sharvin Post (Post Commander) and as a parishioner of Queen of Peace Church.
Col. Vetrone was preceded in death by his dear wife of 55 years, Frances Burkich Vetrone and by his parents.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Mastrianno; the Tom Heffernan family; the Anthony Carrano family; the George Montano family and by many other close friends.
Visitation will take place at Queen of Peace Church, 910 14th Street, North Chicago on Tuesday, April 8, 2003 from 9 to 10:30 AM, followed by the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will take place at Ascension cemetery in Libertyville.
Arrangements are under the direction of PETERSON & PATCH FUNERAL HOME, 408 N. Sheridan Rd, Waukegan.

Antonia R. Almanzo
Antonia R. Almanzo, 80, of Waukegan passed away on March 31, 2004 at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan surrounded by her family after a lengthy illness.
She was born May 31, 1923 in Clarksville, TX and had lived in Waukegan for the past 60 years. She retired from Abbott in 1985 after 39 years of service. Antonia was an avid Chicago White Sox fan and loved working in the garden. She was a member of Holy Family Parish.
She is survived by her sisters, Juanita (Rafael) Garcia, Mary (Bernabe) Lopez both of Whicita Falls, TX and Lupe Almanzo of Waukegan; brothers, Ausencio (Delores) and Jess (Karen) Almanzo both of Waukegan; nieces, Gloria (Robert) Hlousek of Waukegan, Kim (Bill) Borzick of Lindenhurst, Cynthia (Cloys) Patterson of Whicita Falls, TX, Jonya Almanzo of Waukegan, Jouita Almanzo of St. Peters, MO; nephews, David (Barbara) Almanzo of New Hope, MN, Thomas (Katharine) Almanzo of Mundelein Ramon (Jessica) Garcia of Zion, Roman Garcia of Whicita Falls, TX, Joseph Almanzo of Waukegan and Jesse Ray Almanzo of Waukegan; she is also survived by four great nieces and seven great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Reynaldo and Modesta Almanzo.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at Holy Family Church 450 Keller Ave. Waukegan with Fr. Gary Graff officiating.
Interment will be at Ascension cemetery in Libertyville. Friends may call at Peterson & Patch Funeral Home 408 N. Sheridan Rd. Waukegan from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 5, 2004.

Katarzyna "Kathy" Charowski
Katarzyna "Kathy" Charowski, 76, of Zion died Friday, April 2, 2004 at Rolling Hills Nursing Home in Zion.
She was born January 1, 1927 in Poland and after much moving around during World War II, eventually moved to this country over 50 years ago from England. She settled in Zion where she went to work at Warwick Electronics of Zion and later worked at Lambs Farm and at Abbott Labs before retiring from Whiteside Draperies in Zion in 1993. She was a member of Our Lady of Humility Church of Beach Park and she was an avid bowler, bowling on various teams and leagues over the years.
She is survived by several friends, including Halina and Jan Wisniewski of Zion, Anna of Waukegan, June of Zion, Earol of Zion, the Oraviec family of Winthrop Harbor; and several God children in the area. She was preceded in death by her father and mother; and a brother, who all died in captivity in World War II.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 6, 2004 from 5 until 8 PM at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, April 7th at 12 Noon at the Congdon Funeral Home with Interment following at Ascension cemetery, Libertyville. 847-746-1234.

Susan F. "Sue" Gornik
Susan F. "Sue" Gornik, 50, of Waukegan died on Friday, April 2, 2004 at Sheridan Health Care Center in Zion.
Sue was born November 16, 1953 in Waukegan, the daughter of the late John and Dorothy (nee Miller) McManaman. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School, Class of 1971 and was employed at Abbott Labs for 13 years. She enjoyed swimming at the YMCA, collecting porcelain dolls, raising Dachshund's and most of all spending time with her girls.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her very dear friend, Paul Miks of Waukegan; children Jennifer Gornik of Wadsworth, Jessica Gornik of Beach Park and Lisa Gornik of Zion; five very special brothers and sisters, Lynn Bohlman of Newcastle, Wyoming, Micharel McManaman of Beach Park, Mary (Gary) Hakala of Winthrop Harbor, Laura (Greg) Winiewicz of Henderson, Nevada and Timothy (Candy) McManaman of Salem, Wisconsin; and many dear nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Dorothy McManaman; as well as a very special brother-in-law, Razzle Corcoran.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 6, 2004 from 5 until 8 PM at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion. Services will be Wednesday, April 7, 2004 beginning at the funeral home at 9 AM and then going to Our Lady of Humility Church, 10655 W. Wadsworth Road, Beach Park for Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Ascension cemetery, Libertyville. 847-746-1234.
